Although Crash and Spyro definitely helped shape playstation, you can't deny the influence that characters such as Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchett and Clank have had in shaping sony fandom since the PS2. Or the influence Nathan Drake and Sackboy are having with the current generation.
Heck, I haven't really played most of these games and I recognize the characters. At least most of them, I'd say Radec is the only character I have no knowledge of.
If this game had come out a decade ago, then yea, Crash and Spyro and Snake and Lara would have been vital. But this here is a different generation. The only reason Nintendo has NES classics in the roster is because they are still relevant to games currently, plus ROB and Ice Climbers being classic fighters. And Nintendo doesn't have to strike deals with other companies to get their hands on their classic characters.
I'm also extremely sure they'll be pumping out extra stuff for this game. There's a reason the guy mentions this to be the Launch roster, these people clearly still want to be working and as a result will keep trying to add content later on. The real worry is how PS goes about giving us that content, I hope they don't go capcom on it.
Also, gameplay will also be a main selling point. We're talking about a game that looks to mimic the addictiveness of a Smash Bros. game and that actually has the staff constantly revising it to balance the characters. Plus, a decent online multiplayer, which is every smash bros. fan's dream. The amount of time you could potentially play this game is what gives it value.
