It's pretty funny and cute, I would recomemnd watching it.. Though if you dislike Kyoani's usual stuff you probably won't like it

http://blogsuki.com/archives/2012/10/11/6036/It's bad.
It's your typical hyper-saccharine loli-moe show, and it somehow manages to be even less substantive than K-ON!.
It's literally representative of everything that's happened in anime since Y2K, and everything that's been wrong with anime since Y2K.

…So you hate One Piece then? What do you prefer on your vegetarian diet of TV then? Kimba the White Lion?
-
Last I checked, One Piece began in 1997, and it's not a shallow voyeur documentary of "cute girls, doing cute things".

Not to disagree but hey we got in return danshi nichijou (well no friggin idea what the correct abbreviation is) which wouldn't be half as funny without the contrast of all those anime so… as far as I am concerned I'm fine :)
-

And you can simply ignore those Moe anime cartoons and watch stuff like JoJo and Magi instead. I just simply find Moe to be a relaxing break from gritty novels like Berserk.
-
Chuunibyou is pretty cute and fun. And as I said in a few pages back, the delusional action scene has a God tier animation it's not even funny. Check it out, Davy.
The only downside of the show is the annoying as fuck Dekomori.
-
I like Chuunibyou. True, it's not even remotely original, but the direction is pretty good, the jokes work more often than not, oh, and HOLY SHIT THAT ANIMATION-QUALITY. Seriously, even for KyoAni, this series looks absolutely gorgeous, especially during the "delusional battle-scenes" that All Fiction just mentioned.
…The opening is kinda crap though.
-
And you can simply ignore those Moe anime cartoons and watch stuff like JoJo and Magi instead.
There isn't anything wrong with moe. I watch Smile PreCure! every week and it's…not good, but worth 22 minutes of attention.
That doesn't change the fact that shows like Chuunibyou shouldn't exist.
I just simply find Moe to be a relaxing break from gritty novels like Berserk.
Bad imagery, man.
Bad imagery!
@Vegard:

I love the backgrounds, but the characters are rotoscoped, which is something Kyoto Animation has been doing to save cost since Haruhi. I don't think you can make an argument that rotoscoping is particularly skillful animation, and I've yet to be impressed by it.
-
That doesn't change the fact that shows like Chuunibyou shouldn't exist.
That's a bit extreme! If you don't like something don't watch it no need to wish it was phased out of existence
-

Yeah that's not nice, denying other people entertainement just because you don't like it, that's kind of selfish and messed up.
You still get other stuff you like maybe not as much anymore but I'm sure it's still there. -
I find Chuunibyou pretty okay since most of the humor involving Rikka is actually funny (the train joke is still my favorite) but the last 2 episodes were pretty bleh.Probably due to that 'normal' girl with the hair clip being a bitch all the time and Dekomori being so goddamn annoying_._
Still wish they'd done Little Busters instead of another moe show(K-ON was way better than this though) since JC Staff is doing a pretty mediocre job with it at the moment but oh well. There's always the visual novel. The show introduced itself with stereotypes, but promptly (2/3 into Episode 2) developed those stereotypes into characters. There were also some clever metaphors/parallels scatted throughout and offbeat humour as well. The overall quality is right up there with tsuritama and Mawaru Penguindrum, semi-elite anime in a sea of mostly mediocre-bad shows.
I'm very impressed, especially considering this is a JC Staff show. In fact, JC Staff kind of broke its formula for generic moe shows once before (with Toradora!) and this might be the second coming of that caliber show.
My only concern is the pacing might be a tad too fast given the episode count…scheduled for 24.
Seriously?I thought it was just another generic harem show(thought I kinda liked the main girl's character design).Guess I'll give it a try.
& watching Robotics;Notes and it's pretty meh so far (as expected)
The protagonist is really boring/plain but I like the girl's shonen-like spirit.
I found that part when they teased the glasses guy and forced him into their club hilarious as well but the rest just hasn't pulled me in.
I finished Steins;Gate recently (I'm way late to the party, I know) and I don't really expect Robotics to be of the same quality like others do.Right now I'd give it a 6/10, hopefully it turns out to be at least a 7-worthy show by the end.So far my favorite shows of the season are Tonari no Kaibutsu kun, Psycho Pass and Magi.Tonari is shoujo cliches done extremely well and in a refreshing way with two great leads and funny humor, Psycho pass is really cool and highly entertaining stuff and Magi is shonen goodness, actually I think it's the first time I've seen a long running shonen manga adapted with such great animation.I'd be watching Jormungaund S2 if I hadn't missed the first one while it was airing, really have to get around to doing that.
Also, can anyone who's seen it(if anyone has) tell me if Sukitte ii na yo is worth trying out or just another generic shoujo?

In case you haven't noticed, the anime world is as dominated by moe as the manga world is dominated by shounen. There's much more to anime than moe, just as Jump isn't the cat's meow of manga…in fact, most Jump manga are pretty freaking mediocre.
The problem is, moe sells, and unlike mere fanservice, moe warps the very plot fabric of any show it's jammed into. A lot of old anime fans have been driven away from anime because of shows like Chunibyou. And many of the fans who are left (who influence the next year's anime) are pretty repulsive individuals.
Kyoto Animation was a cool company when it tried to be Pixar: Japan and provide solid stories supplemented by top-quality art/animation. They even bragged about company benefits and flexible work hours (un-heard of in the anime industry). But the company long since sold out, first with Lucky Star and it got out of control with K-ON!. Chunibyou is more of the same, but lower than low.

lol, your opinion on moe anime really reminds me of a certain character from Oreimo:
!
But tbh I'm indifferent to the moe stuff, although there's some that are some really funny ones like Milky Holmes, Working!! and such. I think the moe stuff works really well with comedies imo.

Yes I agree the anime world is dominated by moe because it's the popular thing that sells at the moment. However this doesn't also mean that other types of shows aren't still being created and thriving too, just like with manga whilst shounen battle series are usually the most popular there are still plenty of other genres that are still present and thriving. We're living in a golden age where there are a large number of scanlators willing to scanlate many different manga, some may be scanlated much quicker than others but there is still something for everyone. Just because a series isn't selling like hotcakes likes One piece or K-on it doesn't mean it doesn't exist and cannot be enjoyed.

I really fail to see how moe warps the plot when most of the time it's just used for comedy. Also refusing to watch anime because there are some shows out there that you don't like is pretty pathetic, there are still plenty of shows out there that differ from Chunibyou, hell even in this season is plenty diversity. Like I said earlier there is plenty of stuff out there for everyone. If Chunibyou were the only show being broadcast I'd get it but since there's so much diversity out there this behavior just seems odd to me.

To be honest iIdon't really think Kyoani has changed that much over the years.
2003-2007 they produced anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy, FMP fumoffu, Haruhi, Kannon
2007-2010 they produced anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy, Lucky star, Clannad, K-on
2010-2012 they are still producing anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy. Nichijou, Hyouka, ChunibyouI don't think Kyoani have gone anywhere when it comes down to the quality of there work. they know their formula, they know what sells and they know how to tweak this formula so that every show still feels like a new experience. Hyouka is probably my favourite of there productions and that only came out a few months ago.
-
Also, can anyone who's seen it(if anyone has) tell me if Sukitte ii na yo is worth trying out or just another generic shoujo?
A classic shoujo about a playboy falling in love with the weird girl. It's kinda cute at times but don't expect to be blown away by the story. I particularly like the direction in this one, some scenes are really pleasant to watch. So watch it if you have some free time but you wouldn't miss much if you don't.
About Chuunibyou, I think it's a inoffensive anime, though I wish KyoAni would take more risks and try to innovate. i'm a bit fed up with High School slice of life. Anyway, my favorite moe show this season is obviously:
!
-
Also, can anyone who's seen it(if anyone has) tell me if Sukitte ii na yo is worth trying out or just another generic shoujo?
It's generic through and through. It's Kimi ni Todoke with a pushy guy (and kissing). Unless you enjoy having "doki doki" scenes shoved down your throat multiple times during every episode and a female protagonist who becomes a preachy know-it-all on subjects she's completely new to, then avoid it like the plague. The only reason I'm still watching it is to see the rival male character from the manga show up, who's pretty much the only likable character in the series.
Kaibutsu is also generic so far, and can't make up its mind on whether the main characters like each other mutually or not. I like the shy glasses girl and Natsume, though, but that won't hold me for long.
And finally, I'm glad I took up Kanojou, because it's a breath of fresh air. I hope the pushy, no-nonsense girl moves out of Sakurasou, though, because she's pretty annoying and killing the good vibes given off by Mashiro and Sorata. Also, Jin needs to stop being an idiot and get with Masaki…
-

Disclaimer, I'm not a "manga guy" so I don't know anything about manga. I can only draw parallels with anime.
Your're a bit off when you say this is a golden age of anything, though. Especially anime. Kyoto Animation might be the richest studio, but if we look across the ocean to America, can you say that Pixar (the leading animation studio in the US) has opened the way for more/better cartoons on Cartoon Network? If anything, demographics and appeal (which Pixar rebels against) has closed many doors to potential animators and artists and stifled creativity.
For example, OreImo was brought up by OrangeNinjaSucks. That was a light novel chosen to be published because of its sickening otaku pandering themes. Incest toward a tsundere supermodel sister and her "easy" otaku friends. Compare that to years ago when novels like Banner of the Stars were being written and animated, stories about growing up and finding one's place in the world.
If Kyoto Animation wasn't wasting money on the lowest common denominator of show, and setting an example other studios would want to follow, maybe you would be right. But creatively, the industry is in a bad place right now, with numerous blocks for really unique ideas from ever reaching the television screen.
Heck, if Obata didn't pull a bait-n-switch, Death Note might never have done what it did years ago.
I really fail to see how moe warps the plot when most of the time it's just used for comedy. I'm watching Chunibyou, but that doesn't mean I'm not disgusted by it. I feel obligated because other people are watching it although I find it pretty distasteful. It's like a parent watching Pokemon with his kids even if he doesn't know what the heck is going on.
Moe impacts the plot because it's tied to how the characters behave, and behaving takes screen time. You could take a shot of a girl's chest while preserving narration; that becomes fanservice, but the show's tempo isn't really impacted.
Spending moments to look at Rikka go auauauaua or something is the problem. Some might call it slice-of-life, but a big arse budget doesn't need to be spent on some anorexic girl whimpering like a baby.
2003-2007 they produced anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy, FMP fumoffu, Haruhi, Kannon
FMP/Fumoffu should be ignored, that was a commission work.
None of those shows (including Air) were adapted as pure otaku bait, all of them had legit plots and were built around those plots. The point of the show was to unravel the story, not watch the characters in isolation do things.
2007-2010 they produced anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy, Lucky star, Clannad, K-on
L*S and K-ON! are where the problems began, shameless otaku bait shows with no real plot. K-ON! had some nice music but that doesn't excuse it from having characters with face designs like highway roadkill.
2010-2012 they are still producing anime adaptions with high end animation, cute girls and a fair amount of comedy. Nichijou, Hyouka, Chunibyou
Hyouka had so much potential, it's un-freaking-believable how it pissed it all away. A mediocre show came out of what could have been something truly great, had KyoAni possessed the balls to write in actual character development instead of stunting the characters in a relationship quagmire.
-
In case you haven't noticed, the anime world is as dominated by moe as the manga world is dominated by shounen.
ONLY in context of otaku subculture… not at all in context of actual popularity and ratings.
What dominates anime world is, and has always been, family sit-coms and kids shows.
You just don't see that in the West.
-

Why? I do the same with books a lot, for example I've read all the twilight books and planning to read 50 shades. It's about knowing the medium you love so you read both good and bad so you can have a justified opinion on the matter. My movie buff friends does the same "surprise" with movies, he goes into every movie and in exchange knows his shit.

I have the exact same attitude as you. I just read 50 Shades purely because I'd heard from this forum how bad it was. I like to view media ranging from horribly bad (once in a while), to bad (even rarer than horribly bad), to decent, to good, pretty good, great, awesome, very awesome, etc. I don't just restrict myself to just "very awesome" and label everything else as horrible while ignoring things that will give me some modicum of enjoyment and be remembered, even if it's just one time in my entire life for a single second that I remember it.

To feel the need to watch something even though you feel disgusting by it just because other people watch it? That´s stupid in my book. Your friend does not even go into the same category because he does not know how the movie is before watching it, Terek says he watches it even though he knows it is disgusting, a difference.
-

What you have to understand is when you love a medium you don't necessarily only entertain yourself with it. Every game designer loves games and will also play bad games despite knowing they are bad. There's a lot to be learned from that.
My friend went into every twilight movie, he went and saw jack and jill despite knowing those would be bad experiences. If I've never read twilight I wouldn't have understood how smartly it's put together, example the extremely boring female protagonist devoid of any real personality, well that exactly makes it easy for the million of female readers to project themselves into it.
-

You're making zero sense. It's like you think blindly bashing something is better than watching it to make an informed criticism.
I have a small hope that Chunibyou turns into something substantial. The light novel material has already been used up, so everything from this episode onward is new. In fact, the pigtailed freak is also anime-original. Lightning could strike.
But it probably won't.

No, forming a negative opinion about it, namely finding it disgusting and then continuing to watch it because you feel compelled to since so many other people watch it is stupid.

No, forming a negative opinion about it, namely finding it disgusting and then continuing to watch it because you feel compelled to since so many other people watch it is stupid.
What part is stupid?
Are you saying negative opinions are stupid? If people hate criticism of Chunibyou, maybe that's because they're ashamed of watching it. Look at the riots over Sword Art Online and Guilty Crown. Fans got defensive when critics pointed out the obvious, clumsy flaws and stupid writing. People don't like being told they're wrong and get embarrassed when they realized they themselves were.
Clearly, I'm not watching Chunibyou for self-schadenfreude. I,
-like pointing out how stupid and shameless it is, because I don't like to watch TV with my brain off
-like pointing out how the writing speaks volumes about the 'creative' minds behind it
-want to dissuade people from supporting such shows, so the quality of anime has reason to improve
-have hope Chunibyou might turn out better than I'm condemning itObviously, that last one might not come true. Hyouka had ample opportunity to be a good romance story, but most of the development happened in the first two episodes and the rest of the series focused on some solo development for Oreki, mild for the supporting secondaries and zero for the moe-blob heroine. All in all, 22 episodes of massive waste over an otherwise mundane plot.
-
Nice way to misunderstand. Negative opinions are obviously not stupid, watching something deliberately after having built a negative opinion about it just because many people watch it or you like to rant about or, my favorite (i really had to laugh out loud), to start a self-righteous crusade against a manga on the internet where most people do not give a damn about your opinion but if it is fulfilling for you then please, be my guest and continue with it.
-
Nice way to misunderstand.
And I continue to, because I have no I have idea what the heck you just said.

Thanks for the info.I had a feeling it wasn't anything special and god, I hate those kinds of scenes.
Yeah, I don't like that aspect of Tonari no Kaibutsu kun too but besides that I really like the show.It doesn't strike me as generic, Shizuku for example is pretty different from you usual shoujo 'girl in love' stereotype and Haru actually feels like a real person, not a goal/prize like male leads in shoujo tend to feel like.Plus the humor is hilarious(though that depends on the person) and the animation is pretty nice too.I'll be trying Sakurasou when I get the time, I was going to watch it originally but I saw some guy hating on it and it turned me off.I should really stop going against my gut feelings when it comes to new airing anime, last time I picked up a show that looked like shit but everyone praised I got Sword Harem Online.I didn't get bad vibes from Sakurasou, so I'll be watching.
Also, wow this is quite the discussion going on here.I'd prefer a show with a story over a moe show anyday because there's more effort put into the former but I can enjoy funny moe shows once in a while too. They're a good change of pace, but I wouldn't want too many of them.
-
Well, I just finished episode 4 of Chunnibyou, and…..
Not really my style. Granted it's beautiful, but it's just about delusional kids with a fake sense of magic in the air. Like in real life, this Anime is just a phase that will be grown out soon enough. And nothing beats Nichijou in Moe.
Now where the hell is Shaft?
-
Shaft is busy with the Madoka movie. And hopefully Kizumonogatari.

Anybody else watching Zetsuen no tempest? Its actually a pretty awesome anime. The two protagonists are a delight to watch and they have layers to them that you don't normally see in anime. You have your smart, capable one who is suddenly thrown into a situation he would have thought impossible but instead of whining and crying and being incompetent, he is calm, rational and thinks things through, he tries to understand what the hell is happening and how its happening instead of waiting for someone to magically show up and tell him.
The fight scenes and general animation and art are awesome enough and the story line is looking to be a little bit more complex than you would think it is at first.

I only saw the first episode, and could not stand the fact other than the babe witch stranded on the island, the whole thing was full of nothing but pretentious mentals. Overdramatic pretentious mentals. SPEAK JAPANESE YOU PRICKS, stop quoting Shakespear like you're stuck in some permanent melodrama.
The overtly melodramatic BGM constantly playing in the background absolutely did not help, despite the tracks being gorgeous. It drove me up the walls, couldn't bear it more than an episode.
It felt like one of those late-chuunibyou patient highschool girl's puking poems scribbled in her notebook or one of those terrible keitai cellphone novels. If the series focused on the spunky, jazzy chick on the island instead, who unlike EVERYONE ELSE didn't speak like a poem nerd, I'd watched more.

I am not so eloquent in my English like Aohige but i have to agree with him/her (i don´t know), Zetsuen no Tempest is just pretentious, trying to seem sophisticated by quoting Shakespeare all the time while half of the time it does not even fit the occasion. The two metrosexual protagonists are supposed to resemble Romeo and Hamlet, i do not know if it was supposed to be a tribute to Shakespeare or just an attempt to seem "different" but to me it is more insulting than everything else.

I am suprised at myself, but I really enjoy Girls und Panzer.
They take a totally retarded concept and actually manage to make it not only interesting, but very entertainign as well. The story reminds me a bit of Saki and is fairly generic, but the tank battles are very engaging and I did not expect that from such a show.
