Yeah I agree, that's why Miyamoto is directing the ep, we will see the conclusions and will probably end with Luffy doing gattling.

Episode #565 is supervised by Yokoyama Kenji with key animation by him, Tanabe Yoshinori, and Yokoyama Miyuki. I'm not familiar with the latter two, but it doesn't seem very…impressive.
It was very very disappointing, I think Yokoyama did the key animation himself for the attack.
Since Yamashita Megumi is acting as the animation supervisor, I'd like to hope she could get Tate or Shimanuki to help out, assuming Hisada is off supervising an episode of his own, but that's probably too much to ask for. ~_~
That Red Hawk was such a let down. They didn't even use special animator for it… Good thing we're gonna get another one. Lets hope it will be awesome.

You just had your expectations way too high.
That's your opinion. I had my expectaions high(shida tier) but I was prepared for something smaller. Unfortunetly what I got was just… normal. Not bad - normal. There wasn't really much animation and punch moment was a stillshot with little animation added. It lacked a scene where luffy actually punches him.
No one is saying Red Hawk was bad, it was okay. But it was not what most people expected. Seeing how Toei brought some great animators for this arc like Shida, Tomita and Nakatsuru. Normally your hopes will go up for one of the main attacks, that's all.
Anyway, probably most of the great animators are busy with other stuff, like 566 and 567, Movie Z, and some animators like Kuroyanai, Urata and Hashimoto still did not come back since they might have finished their work late on the Nami Ep, since they were on the top of the key animation list they have done most of the key animation.
I can't help but get excited for next week, I'm expecting good pacing with good content, good directing, and some special animators since Miyamoto is directing.

He did the storyboard for an early episode of Saint Seiya Omega and then…vanished.
That was months ago, who knows what he's doing now.
Didn't Inoue do some key animation on one of the recent episodes, I think 557?

566 is actually the other half of 645 and all of 646.
567 is most likely just 647 though.
566 had some excellent animation.
Pacing wise, it was pretty slow, but they covered the 1.5 chapters, so whatever.
Next week we'll probably get the Whitebeard scene and 647.
Excellent animation for the Luffy parts, the rest sucked, IMO. Also, Directing was not the usual Miyamoto level. I am disappointed.
I lol when I saw Usopp's attack, it was so bad that it didn't look like a finisher.
Kudos to Kenji Kuroyangi for doing the Luffy finisher. Also I noticed Ito as well, I think he did the second part of the fight with Hody. But I'm not sure since the stream quality was not good.
The names I noticed in the credits were Ito, Ishizuka, Kuroyanagi, Hisada, and one other guy whose name looked real familiar but I couldn't place.
EDIT: Couldn't believe I didn't recognize Kawamura. Looks like I was mistaken on that other guy

Kawamura probably did the Sanji attack.
Edit: Hisada and Ishizuka probably did corrections than key animation. Ishizuka corrected the elephant gattling, while Kuroyangi key animated it.
Watching the finishers again, wow they are really bad, it was not even average animation, I bet Yokoyama would have done a better job.

Though the key animation was all over the place this week, I really have to hand it to Kuroyanagi. A while back I had him pegged as the ''utility'' guy - the animator who was good but not outstanding and usually did miscellaneous parts instead of the important stuff, but ever since the timeskip he's been making quite a name for himself.
Kuroyanagi is on the top of my favorite One Piece animators list, he developed his style nicely, it became more dynamic and fluid, and his effect animation is cool. I have to say I prefer his latest works over Tate's.
It's sad that this arc had many great animators returning, like Tate, Shida, Shintani, and Tomita but they only worked once. It's very obvious that the Ep of Nami special had an impact on the quality of the final quarter of the arc. This arc had some of the worst animated episodes, and many episodes had around 1-4 key animators per ep.
Now for the next two months, there won't be any action oriented chapter, so hopefully by the time the new movie is released, the quality of the show will be back to good.
I wish the ones that animated Naruto could take over One Piece. Naruto episodes never disappoint.

Pierrot put out some pretty lame stuff over the summer, but Toei rarely beats out Pierrot.
Pierrot animators seem to..well….animate.

On the bright side, Pierrot seems to care more about the pacing. They kept 10 chapter of the boring and non climatic fight between Itachi and Sasuke in like 3 episodes. I thought that Kushina's telling her past was brillantly done.
Pierrot is bland and the use computer animation too much. The tailed beast cloaks and Naruto's kyuubi cloak look lame in the anime. Only time I liked that was when Gaara was talking too 100.000 ninja. It really looked like 100.000 ninja instead of the 100.000 fishman at the plaza.

Just rewatched episode #196. Holy crap. Incredible direction, incredible backgrounds, and a brilliant storyboard and use of the characters' abilities. Imamura Takahiro really hit it out of the park with that one.
I always wonder if G8 had different writers and/or directors (I know Mamoru Hosoda directed 199) from the regular anime team, because the writing and humor felt a lot snappier and slick than usual. Certainly the gold standard for filler.
One of the eps from G8 I've always loved was #202 (like #196, it's a Koizumi-directed one). The animation and art seemed really on-point and the directing felt very cinematic for what could've easily been a lame filler episode trying to play up drama/humor but falling flat on it's face.

I think Hosoda was the only guest. I've always wondered how his style permeated visually, though. Maniwa (the animation supervisor) is a regular on the series and none of his other episodes looked like that.
Anyway, two more episodes in. Tate's work on #197 is getting a little closer to what he began to do in the HD episodes. While keeps everyone else on model his key animation is beginning to show his trademark fluidity and lower detail more. Episode #198 was fun, but not spectacular. Takaagi was animation supervisor and did a better job than he does nowadays, but that might just be because Koizumi's designs are better.
I have to say, the writing for G8 really is incredible Without a doubt these are the best episodes of the series. If only they did more of these arcs…

I would hope so. The anime seems to be slowly catching up given the lack of true filler episodes in so long (2010?), and the current likely won't be finished in the manga until 2013.
I theorize we'll be getting One Piece Film Z tie-in filler at some point, like that (godawful) Little East Blue arc.

I hope that they animate the post-timeskip cover stories. Like people from all over the world reading the newspaper etc. This should give them canon material for atleast 2-3 episodes.
They should do cover stories (3 eps), movie filler (3-4 eps), random filler at fishman island (like post w7 filler) (3-4 eps) and that will give them 20 episodes of manga material with 1.5 chap pacing for those less content packed chapters in next arc. Those 10 filler episodes would make WHOLE arc MUCH more enjoyable.
But who am i trying to fool :( no matter if they do filler or not, 1 chap pacing will be back for 90% of episodes. Fillers will just make up for all those breaks that Oda is taking.

I feel as if Toei would have a much better time with episode and arc pacing if they did something like this:
Long arcs (more than 30 chapters) = medium/fast pacing, 10 episode filler arc afterwards
Short arcs (less than 30 chapters) = slow/medium pacing, 3-5 episode filler arc afterwards
This way, people don't have to get bored when watching/marathoning a long arc.
I hope for some short filler like 3-7 episodes max, just enough so they would cover more than a chapter for the action oriented chapters. Need more like the Spa Island filler.
The problem is that Oda keeps taking breaks every once in a while, while the anime rarely does.
Isochi, perhaps? That Luffy looks like it _could_ be his.
Yeah, could be Isochi without Nakatani's usual staff or lower budget.

He was last an animation supervisor for #379. He has been a key animator about every ten or so episodes lately, though.
Looks like Shindou Mitsuo is in this episode, too. Man, does he only do a few frames an episode?
Watching the early Water 7 episodes dubbed on DVD and was wondering why, in Episode 228 (the final part of Aokiji fight, which is clearly a Tate episode) Inoue's animation style pops up during the last several minutes of the episode. Checking the OP Wiki I see that Inoue boarded that episode, but does the storyboarder really have that much influence over how the style can appear in a particular episode? If so, what about the giant portion of the episode that just looked like Tate's work?
