So, around 5 years ago I read part 1 through part 3, then my reading spree came to an halt due to Duwang's horrible scans; recently I've begun reading again and now I'm at part 6. I just wanted to share some thoughts and ask you guys a few things.
Phantom Blood: Love at (almost) first sight. The characters were cool and it definitely wasn't the same trite battle manga. The art was crazy and the poses as well; I just saw above how Araki was inspired by fashion magazines and it all makes sense now. It had some (interestingly) disturbing parts and it was just the right length: in fact I think that many of the later parts of JoJo would have been way better if shortened by 5-10 volumes; sometimes in the more recent parts the fight just drag on too much. Dio was a great villain and
! Jonathan dies! First and last time for a JoJo as far as I know… don't spoil me!
Battle Tendency: Joseph was a much better main character than Jonathan. He's funny but also serious and strong when the need arises. Despite the name, Battle Tendency follows on the footsteps of part 1 and it's a great merger of fights and adventure, it also has the most fleshed out story of all the parts I've read, lots of stuff is added to the JoJo lore, while many things like hamon are better explained; it's set in many different and interesting places and we have a whole bunch of new badass villains. Just as part 1, it has a perfect lenght.
Stardust Crusaders: Probably my favourite part. Jotaro is one of the biggest badasses in the history of manga and Dio is for sure in my top ten of villains. I loved the journey to Egypt and I loved stands. At this point something like stands was needed, the hamon stuff was getting stale and Araki couldn't possibly have just hamon and normal fights for the length of 16 volumes. Jotaro's sidekicks are also great, especially good old Joseph. Though here JoJo begins being a little too much formulaic for my tastes: Jotaro encounters stand user -> turns out to be a good guy x4 and then Jotaro encounters enemy with weird stand -> stand weakness found -> stand user defeated -> rinse and repeat. It's just one self concluded fight after another. Though the craziness and novelty of stands makes up for the repetitiveness. The final fight with Dio has to be in my top 5 moments in a manga ever. It's also great that stands didn't replace hamon to this point, both were still there together.
Up to part 3 in my opinion the manga was just getting better and better, while from part 4 and onwards some problems will arise. More to come later today…
