Chapter 680: "Captain of the Marine's G-5, Kichiku no Vergo"

Watching Luffy and Smoker teaming up is fun. But watching Luffy and Smoker decently ringing the bell to meet their enemies is just hilarius!!! I mean, whit their powers they surelly could just break down that door and go fastly for them…

But at the same time that doesn't have much sense, since current situation is hard to deal with. You may think that there is a connection between this and this scenes. I mean, in both of them you have Smoker ringing the bell. But the context is completely different. In the first one, you can take smoker attitude as a political way to begin an investigation; so you may have the time for politics, and politics could be convenient. But in the second one, they both have 2 hours to beat CC and Vergo; Smoker knows that for him it is not an easy task. So, what the f**** about ringing the bell there…. It would have much more sense to take that door down and go for them quickly… don't you think so?

I would be not Ok with it as much i´m not Ok with Sanji losing. They both already got their loss in this arc when they were knocked out by the Cool Brothers with their "drunk" gas. If Sanji were to lose now then Zoro´s "Get your shit together, this is the New World" thing would totally be ridiculed, Sanji also heard that.

@Binsquarr: The thing that surprises me a bit is that everyone seems to assume that Vergo is DoFlamingo´s "right hand man" or i even read "vice captain" or "first mate". Honestly, at this point we have no idea what kind of monsters Flamingo has gathered under him over the years. Of course Vergo would be and probably is very important to Flamingo, he managed to become a VA after all and spying on + using the G5 marines to hide his own doings is a very important job but my guess is that Flamingo really has gathered many powerful talents, he waited a long time for the "New Era" after all.

I am not sure what Zoro considers a "loss", but imo he already lost to Kuma on both occasions they ran into each other.

I mean… Let's just say Sanji WILL be fighting Vergo until conclusion, and of course, Luffy will more than likely fight CC to conclusion. What about the others? I mean...Punk Hazard has a rather large 'friendly party' going on, but I don't see enough opponents to push their skills properly. The only 'villains' I see on Punk Hazard are CC and Vergo.

I'm pretty sure Monet won't fight, instead fleeing back to Doflamingo or joining up with Law (or something).

I'd be okay with either of them losing as long as it's graceful.
Meaning that they took a lot of punishment but also dealt some damage.
That, despite losing, they were a threat.
The problem with Zoro losing is, as always, his promise back at Baratie. You can rationalize all of his "losses" up till now away…
Like I said, it would depend on how it's done.

I honestly thought about that, too. Punk Hazard will probably be concluded in the next 5-10 chapters which would bring it up to either 30 or 35 chapters. Correct me if´m wrong but we´ve never had a "stand alone" arc this short before, at least not if you consider Arlong Arc etc. belonging to East Blue Saga. What i´m really curious about though is whether we´ll get Wano (in order to bring Kinemon back) or like Law said, their plan starts immediately and we´ll get the Emperor (Big Mum) Arc or maybe even something else.

I think Sanji vs Vergo won't happen because of the gas, but it still is possible, and if it happens then it could be a great plot for the future development of Sanji:

Sanji defeats Vergo (even Zoro doesn't look that much worried that Sanji goes after that "strange aura that appeared behind them")
Vergo being Doflamingo subordinate, Dofla would certainly want to beat the guy that defeated Vergo, so finally Sanji could be the one to fight Dofla, and not Luffy or Zoro as everybody is supposing
Dofla would use his power to force Sanji to hit some woman, let's say Robin or Nami… how do you think Sanji would react ? Would his will he be able to overcome Dofla's power ? This I think would be the biggest possible development for Sanji...

well like most people i am glad that Sanji is getting to fight Vergo but even if that wasnt happening, Punk Hazard has been a solid and awesome arc for him. he brought Kinemon to their side while developing a manly bonding (remember Nami and the others were willing to leave him behind) and got to shine even in Nami's body. the vs Vergo is more like the icing on the cake

This chapter was all kinds of awesome! Sanji FTMFW! I've stuck by him during his best and "worst" times, and it's scenes like this that show how awesome he is…even if his motivation is "chessy". Y'know, I'm probably in the minority here, but I just don't care for Tashigi or Smoker. They're good characters, don't get me wrong, but their mentality of "The SH are pirates, i.e. they are evil, we must take them in" rubs me the wrong way. I mean, Smoker was saved by Luffy, saw that Alabasta was saved by Luffy, and has seen some of the WG corruption/lies, yet he still goes after him (to the point of having himself assigned to the NW). Tashigi is no better. Zoro was nice to her w/o her glasses in Loguetown and she was friendly with him until she found out who he was, then automatically, "You're evil and unworthy of your sword...I'm taking it!" Just...no. I hope Sanji's rescue can give her a wake-up call this time that not all pirates are bad...c'mon, she was "bitch smacked" upside her head by someone who was supposed to be a comrade, and her men were just decimated by gas and said comrade.

Either way, seeing her and/or Smoker getting humiliated gives me this kinda reaction:

I don't think either Smoker or Tashigi really believe the Strawhats are evil, but they are dangerous. From the position of law enforcement, they're more dangerous than your typical "steal-and-plunder" Pirate. Not only are they unafraid of attacking the government, but the way they act kind of legitimizes being an outlaw. Like… they could totally inspire people to become outlaws and that's why they have such a heavy bounty on their heads.

There is still a possibility of Doflamingo arc. Personally, Im sure its going to be Joker > Wano > Big mam.

My predictions for the upcoming chapter:

Zoro is going to tame the dragon (yea i believe he has CoC)
Caesar is going to use Smoker against Luffy

The Zoro "never lose again thing" I assume was only in relation to fighting swordsmen.

I'm sorta hoping that PH will become like the W7 arc where it intertwines with another arc to lead to Wano. I'm hopping the next chapter or two lead into where Kinnemon's son is. It'd be weird if he was actually off the island. It's strange enough that he's been separated from the other kids.

I have question about last line translation:

mangapanda: quick actions leads to victory
mangastream: ups… no translation
mangahelpers: The one who gets the first hit wins!!

There is a difference between those translations, since it is possible to win based on quick actions even in the case that you dont get the first hit. In other words, if the criteria for victory is to get the first hit, Luffy has won, period. But if the criteria is quick actions, the fight is no over yet. What would be the correct translation?

in literal sense, 先手必勝 means first hit, sure victory.
In the actual usage of the word, it means swift, initiative actions leads to victory by giving you the upper hand.

Neither of them are wrong, but generally go by the usage.
Literal sense is useless. Otherwise 必殺技, special move, would mean gurantee death. When's the last time THAT happened? lol.

Thanks a lot. I suppose that in some way the line could be related to the fact that Luffy has to win in the time he can hold his breath and, simultaneously, keep enought strength to hit… If Luffy comes to need a second breath he could lose.

Honestly, what topic about the current chapter is so interesting that we could go on and on about it without having it degenerate into a bitter argument between two disgruntled forum perusers? And then off-topic happens.

The fact is, the entire plot of the chapter can be summarized in a paragraph:
Strawhats ride Brownbeard through the hallway leading to Building B from Building A. The dragon attacks G5, but runs away at the sight of Velcro. The marines cheer, but are immediately slaughtered by Virgil. Tashigi fights back, but gets punched aside. Sanji flies in with a kick to Wargod's face in response to Tashigi's crying. Caesar wants to contain the intruders, but Luffy and Smoker have already busted into the control room. Luffy punches Caesar in the gut.

Plot aside, the dialogue is forgettable, except for that of Sanji, Kinemon, and Zoro, and the art is good as always.

The people who are saying that Sanji not being to beat a Vice Admiral means they can't beat a yonkou have no proof that a vice admiral would get stomped by any of the current yonkou.

These Vice Admirals are no weak people, yet I've seen people say how much stronger the 3 full admirals were. Well now that two of them admiral positions are open do you think that the VA who get promoted instantly become stronger?

Before the timeskip luffy could not even beat a "loguetown" smoker who was a captain, and we didn't hear complaints that a 300 million beri bounty pirate not being able to beat a marine captain would mean they would not beat a significantly stronger enemy like a warlord.

Better yet Ace drew with captain smoker was he unable to beat stronger enemies than a captain?

Sanji could totally defeat a Vice Admiral. It's not like rank determines strength :P And if you believe that, you're a marine.

If you believe bounty determines strength, you're a pirate.

If you think rank and bounties are stupid measures of strength, you are a mercenary/bounty-hunter.

It's hard to ignore, I agree, because you can't unsee things. But isn't that why we have mods we can contact? I find that if I want to swear at people, then it means I need to walk away. Especially in this setting.

Er and I guess to stay on topic. I'm looking forward to the next chapter, like I normally do. But to see more how this all plays out with Sanji and Vergo. My guess is that they fight for half the chapter and the focus goes back to the little dragon, the gas is released, everyone scrambles.

It's hardly off topic when it stems from the chapter itself.

The whole discussion has it's roots in whether or not Sanji's chivalry is over done. From there it spanned to various instances in the manga as a whole. Then it go more specific to the types of complaints.

If you can't handle having a mature discussion (at least it was last night when it really hit its head– it's seems to have devolved since then) maybe upi should just avoid the thread.

I think I finally understand why people who really enjoy this series like Hiroy, MK, and a loooot of people on these forums generally avoid the discussion forums. I get it now.
I think this is going to be my last time here for a long while. There are many, many other things in the world I would rather complain about than my favorite thing. There are many, many other things that deserve it more.

He just took a personal break like 5 chapters ago, and then that was immediately followed up by a Jump break. I think we should be good for the next 10 chapters or so (I hope.)
