When that's all you have to drink as a picky as hell kid, you lose any sort of liking for it.
I, too, was raised on Dr Thunder.
I guess I still like it since I haven't had it in a while but I can see where you're coming from since, I used to love Ramen noodles but now I can't stand them anymore. Was raised on that and took it as far as I can go.

I'm the opposite. I was raised on both but I still love ramen noodles as much as I did as a kid. The same cannot be said for Dr. Thunder. :T
You people and your strange words. "Soda", "Pop", "Dr Pepper", pfff.
Us Germans don't have anything like that. We call things by their names, not by strange collective terms.
If we wanna ask if you want something to drink, we ask "Want something to drink?" and be done with it.
We don't even have a word for "soft drink". Well, it has a translation, but it's not used by anyone.
Just drink water and water only. That's pretty easy, language wise.
… well, except trying to order carbonated water. I swear, every time I was in Italy people just didn't get it.
Don't people in Italy drink sparkling water?! The French and British understood, the Spanish got it, the Swiss had no problem with it … but Italians apparently just don't get the concept or something.
… sparkling water?
… sparkling water?
Yes, sparkling water.
I don't know why, but more often than not people didn't understand "carbonated water" for some reason, but they immediately knew what I wanted when I told them I want sparkling water.
I thought carbonated anything meant soft drink.
@Uncle:
I thought carbonated anything meant soft drink.
Same.
@Uncle:
I thought carbonated anything meant soft drink.
?!?
God, this is confusing.
I thought soft drinks contained some form of sweetener and or/flavoring agent.
/EDIT: Stop agreeing with Kenny! Wikipedia seems to be on my side!!
@Nia:

Soft drinks are usually carbonated?? Some of them have a sweetener along with the carbonation…
Ah, so through quick research I found that "sparkling water" is basically just water with fizz, if I understand this correctly. Carbonated water is used as the base for most soft drinks. The additives is what separates soft drinks from plain, carbonated water.

So your language not only sounds like a garbage compactor with a bad attitude but it's also boring as heck? Neat!

Yes, yes!
Thank you, I was starting to think that everything I know is a lie.
@Monkey:

Well, to be fair I should have been more specific and said "Us Bavarians" instead of "Us Germans".
Bavarian sounds awesome.

It sounds like normal German except the people are trying to talk half submerged in water.
Bavarian sounds like Barbarian~
@Monkey:

Nah, basically it's like regular German, only not as stiff and boring. It's more fluent and harmonic.
It's the good German.

There is nothing musical about any of it lol. That's what the medditerranean languages are for.
Japanese sounds more angry than German to me; asian dialects in general, really.
My mom used to live in Germany. She likes to describes German as 'someone caughing up a hairball while screaming and yelling angrily'
@Monkey:

Not gonna disagree there; I never said there was anything musical about it in the first place.
Just that it's sweet.

LOOL
Now, the important part would be which part of Germany she lived in XD
You guys are so mean to Nia.
All she wants to do is bring you joy and raise the banner of the Hattori master race.

Heidelberg, lol. I don't know where exactly that is, but that's where she lived.

Because I'm bored and all alone, I recorded myself talking a bit so you know what Bavarian sounds like :D
But I'm not hardcore Bavarian, so it's still fairly tame.

Heidelberg is fairly close to Bavaria, but I've never talked to anyone from there, so I don't know XD

Not quite as 'yell-y' and 'hairball-ish' as I expected. Kinda pretty, actually~

Oh well~
@Nia:
Exactly!
All Hail Hattori~
God I'm trying to find that Simpsons clip of those two German guys who sound like they're yelling at each other over playing Chess or Checkers or something but are saying just civil, peaceful conversation but I can't find it for the life of me.

I actually get the angry and yell-y impression your mother got, but the hairball part still confuses me XD
Haha, well, it's not the prettiest language (personally, I really love French), but it's the best version of German, is what I'm saying.

Wait, I think I know what you mean! In the German Simpsons version I think they spoke Russian XD

I think it's because my grandma (who was born in Germany) would always go "AGHK" when she was annoyed with anyone. lol
@Nia:

That's still oddly fitting. Not a bad interpretation~
I think it's because my grandma (who was born in Germany) would always go "AGHK" when she was annoyed with anyone. lol
Oooh, I do that, too!
The sound I always make is like a mix of an annoyed sigh and clicking my tounge AND saying "AGHK" in an annoyed/sighing way.
It's kinda hard to describe XD
Now that I think about it, my family and I use simple noises to "talk" a lot. You have to pay a lot of attention to how we emphasize everything. For example "hm" could mean we're agreeing, mocking, questioning, making a surprised kind of sound, using it as a substitute to nodding to encourage a person to go on with what they're saying (like "Yeah, I can follow you") … you know, that kind of thing. We also only say "hm" to say "bless you" and stuff like that.
... my God, we're way too lazy.
/EDIT: @Jay: I think the part you mentioned was in the episode "Lost our Lisa", when Lisa was lost because she got on the wrong bus and wanted to ask someone how she could get home.
@Nia:

Sometimes I do it, too. Not often, but if something annoys me I'll suddenly do that exact noise you described and suddenly all my friends start staring at me funny. lol
Don't worry, my family does too. For the longest time I used to say 'AIIEYAH' when I was annoyed or bored (something my entire family on my mom's side does) before realizing I did that. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if I still did that without noticing. Sometimes I just don't feel like talking so I stare at a person until they leave or stop speaking. Or I just go, "hmm."
ahahaha
I used to break out into Spanish cursing often as a child.
Sometimes, (to my utter embarrasment), I'll try to speak another language and forget specific phrases, and I'll automatically switch over to japanese. orz

Heh, well, almost everyone I know makes that noise to show annoyance, so no one would stare at you XD

Sometimes I forget how to say certain things in German, so I have to say it in English instead.
My sister has those moments too … it's kinda unsettling XD

I don't even speak japanese tho. Instead of 'gracias' I'll say 'arigatou' and all that stuff because I'm so used to watching and listening to japanese then I am any other language.
… that and I was a huge weeaboo when I first got on the internet.

Well, okay, that's pretty weird for the people you're talking to, but totally understandable.
I have to admit I was pretty weeabooish when I first got on the internet as well … I was 13 and the first anime I watched in Japanese was Inu Yasha and it was THE BEST THING EVER and everyone who didn't watch it in Japanese was just dumb and didn't get the show at all and didn't deserve to be called a fan.
Thank God the forum I used to frequent got deleted; I don't want to see the nonsense I wrote ever again XD

Aw, thanks! :D
And yes, that's my tumblr URL. XD
All this talk about talking and languages makes me want to have a thread where everyone can post clips of themselves talking in their own language…
By the way Nia, you have a very nice voice :) I usually am not fond of any German, but I admit it can be beautiful from certain people~
I used to bash German too, but now I've warmed up to it. I would love to learn it someday, as a matter of fact~ I'm on your side, Nia! (even if the only connection to the German language I have is listening to Rammstein songs. They're fun to try and sing along with even though I don't understand any of it.)
Also Nolus. I want to hear you speak in Hungarian.
Also Nolus. I want to hear you speak in Hungarian.
Well, it can be done easily, I just need something to read or speak about. Hm…

Haha, well, just talk about moustaches or what you've been doing all day or something like that XD
Or curses! Curse words are always a lot of fun.
Every time I am happy over the fact I haven't completely forgotten German language, I get to hear something like this:
@Nia:
http://hattoriisgod.tumblr.com/post/30139398652/ignore-this-this-is-just-me-talking-to-let
And understand, like, every fifth word… I know this isn't Hoch Deutsch, but still. I need to get myself together and study or something.
I confess that I hadn't heard about Maru the cat until about an hour back.
I confess that I hadn't heard about Maru the cat until I read your post.
I confess that I still don't know what that is
that's because you're all awful.
@Uncle:
Ew… You use the word "pop".
Yankee.
Oh shit. Now Kenny is going to shoot me. I mixed up the two, one that won't get me shot if I happen by Kenny's porch, and one that will. Fuck. Remind me never to go visit the south without a Kevlar vest.
@Sai-chan:
The Dr. Pepper rip off I hate the most is Dr. Thunder. D:
… Dr. Thunder kind of sounds like a ship name for Bruce Banner and Thor tbh. It also makes me think thunder thighs. and dancing.
@Nia:
That would be really cool! :D I'm really interested to hear you speak Hungarian.

Dunno, should I be proud or sad for being able to understand you perfectly? :s Although Bavarian is still better than Hessian (most of the time I have no idea what those guys are talking about. Or Saxon! Geez…).

Yaaaaay~
They all worked for me at least, so no problem there. It's slightly weird to hear Hungarian, because it sounds familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Glad you did this though! There actually was a thread for voice samples in another forum I went to and it got a lot of replies. Dunno how it would turn out here, but it might be worth a shot.
