I am presented with the unique opportunity of sharing anime with a large crowd of interested people. I would like to share One Piece with them, but I only get an episode to do it and it will likely define most of their opinions of the show. If you had only one episode to hook people in to OP, which would you choose and why?
You Get ONE Episode
-
-
Something recent.
I'd say luffy vs lucci
Or any of the sabaody fights.
-
It's a shame you have time for only one episode, because otherwise you could show your audience episodes 146-147 together. Jaya bar fight followed by Teach's declaration are just so amazing.
Oh well. You could try something like 180. Or 405. Although it's hard to seriously suggest anything past two hundred mark.
-
Episode 377 without a doubt
-
Hm, Luffy's fight with Enel on the Maxim, perhaps? A nice little mix of action, humor, and drama, though I fforget the episode number.
I kinda find it hard to recommend something like 405, 377, or even 312 since those are much more effective if you're a long-time viewer who's grown attached to the characters.
-
Luffy versus Arlong. In particular when Arlong is going up the side of the building with his blade. Was the first episode of the anime I saw, still very very early into my exposure, and it made me go "Oh crap, this is going to get intense later!" even without all the emotional resonance, it was still a good fight, even in raw japanese. And there weren't a whole lot of characters yet.
Of course, it might just be a two parter.
Luffy vs Lucchi is not a good idea, because as great as that fight is, the padding had hit the series by then, and its a looong fight. Its spread over the course of like 10 episodes with subplots running throughout, any given episode of that battle is 4 minutes recap and opening credits, 4 minutes fight, 10 minutes talking head, then end credits.
Alternatively, show the three shorts. Django's dance party and the soccer and baseball ones. Sanji kicking the ball around the world remains pretty memorable even 10 years later.
-
110? I think that's the escape from rain dinners & luffy's first fight with croc, so there should be equal parts comedy & serious fighting against one of OP's best antagonists.
-
A very tough question. 1 episode to hook a whole crowd. 404 is quite some fantastic action, and one thing you've gotta remember to watch out for with One Piece is the weird looking characters. Over the episodes/chapters we got used to how they looked 'cause Oda gradually added more into the mix, but if they see someone like Kokoro, they're gonna be weirded out/most likely turned off.
But when I recommend stuff I like to avoid huge spoilers. 404 would show them all the action of the combat between the Straw Hats + Silvers Rayleigh VS Admiral Kizaru + Sentoumaru + Pacifistas VS Bartholomew Kuma. It's a damn crazy episode, and doesn't have anyone that looks weird really except maybe the Pacifistas.
…but it's not exactly an upbeat episode. Hmmm. 155, where they ride up the Knockup Stream, could be good. It's quite positive. 110 would also be good, it's the fantastic fight between Luffy & Crocodile (first round) and ends on a huge cliffhanger.
Anyway, I'm kinda interested in what the opportunity is. I've always wanted one like that.

Leaving Loguetown episode. :ninja:
Or Luffy vs. Bellamy. :ninja:
Or Zoro vs Mihawk. :ninja:
Or Luffy vs the Admirals. That was really cool in the anime. :ninja:
-
Depends if you wanna show off action, drama, humour, or a mix of all three. Maybe the episode with Baroque Works where Luffy fights Zoro.
Also the crew vs Aokiji episode seems good in theory.
-
Whitebeard punching shit. Any episode with Whitebeard punching shit.
-
Whatever episode the first chapter of the manga with Luffy's flashback ended up being.
-
Ohgod you poor soul, presented with such a damn hard choice @ A @
so many epic episodes…
though I managed to get someone into One Piece because of Apoo vs Kizaru.
Supernovas seem to have a charm to them XD -
@RobbyBevard:
Whatever episode the first chapter of the manga with Luffy's flashback ended up being.
I agree.
Probably the best one to show someone without spoiling the show.
-
Easily something from the Jaya arc. That's like one of the definitive arcs of One Piece, even though it's a tad overlooked since it's sandwiched between the two longest arcs in the series. I agree with Silverblade for 146 or 147, though nearly every episode is really something. If not from that arc, then probably the episode they leave Loguetown.
Just about anything past G8 is too padded to get a lot of people into the series. Of you can just show them that episode where Zoro watches the fat woman's kids in Water 7 and convince them it's a so-bad-it's-good series.
-
Yep. Episode Four, Luffy and Shanks.
It's what hooked me. And doesn't require all the backstory that makes some of the later moments so good.
-
whats with the need to always get others to watch one piece, why would you care.
if they don't watch it , they don't watch it…. -
The walk to Arlong Park scene.
Or Zoro vs. Mihawk.
-
whats with the need to always get others to watch one piece, why would you care.
if they don't watch it , they don't watch it….Have you never tasted a premium stake that made you salivate at the mouth so much you felt the urge to recommend people to the restaurant? Never seen an underrated series that needed more recognition (OP is underrated in America by people who've only read Naruto/Bleach/if they're feeling adventurous Fairy Tail)?
We like to share things we love with other people, it's pretty simple.
-

if they don't watch it , they don't watch it….If you like something it's only natural you'd want to share it with other people unless you're some kind of hermit. Just because you wouldn't want to enjoy it with other people doesn't mean there's anything odd about the idea of people that do.

BROOK´S DEBUT
It completely worked with a friend, we both laughed like crazy and she didn´t even knew Luffy´s name -
If it's strictly only one episode i would go with episode 4. It's in one of my favorites episodes and has the We are opening which is a big plus and basically summarizes the series in a song. Also you don't have to worry about spoilers. It doesn't have a lot of action or fighting so if you are looking for that you shouldn't pick this episode.

Jaya. Enough said.
-
You need to talk them into doing two episodes and show them a Two-parter.
Ep 150 And 151.The Part where Luffy One Hit KOs Bellamy is godly.
-
-Bellamy's KO was a good one.
-That Celestial Dragon getting hit so hard the color flies off of him.
-I think episode 199…I know that's filler but I really liked G8.
-Zoro vs. Kuma.
-The episode where Sogeking saves Robin on the bridge. My list is getting long lol.
-
I also think it shouldn't be from too far into the series, for several reasons. It won't spoil them in case they want to start watching (I know I wouldn't want to be spoiled the war) and to avoid padding issues. Also, it'll be easier to pick one!
Whatever episode you pick should, in my opinion, show off the awesome world of One Piece. So I recommend 152 where they ride up the Knock-up Stream. There is just something way awesome about a vertical current, Luffy is very much his ridiculous self and there is some hint about what the crew has done in the past when Blackbeard shows off the new bounties ("I see… it's because of what we did in Alabasta.") Also, Nami shows her awesome skillz, too, after being initially so afraid. :D
-
Love how much people are suggesting Episode 4 or Jaya. If anything I'd suggest episode 4 - it ain't far in at all, won't spoil much, and it technically should have been the first episode anyhow (if you read the manga it starts with Roger's execution then onto Luffy's past with Shanks then onto him setting out and pwning that bitch then yeah chapter 2 starts with him getting sucked into a whirlpool.)
-
Luffy vs Kuro ?
That's what got me into OP tbh .
-
The episode where they beat Oars. To me, one of the best looking episodes in the whole series.
Then agian, If people expect more episodes like that, they'd be extremely disappointed. -
Frankly I just went from the beginning, and Luffy cracked me up so I kept watching. Have never been disappointed. So if I wanted to convince someone I'd probably just go from the beginning.
And by beginning I mean Luffy's past of course.

BROOK´S DEBUT
It completely worked with a friend, we both laughed like crazy and she didn´t even knew Luffy´s nameThis is the exact first episode that I showed to a friend of mine that made him curious about One Piece. He is now a big fan of the series.
It actually depends on the person you're showing it to though. The friend I showed that episode to loves comedy, which is why that episode won him over.

Ace's Death. I know it'd be a huge spoiler for them, but it's one of the most moving scenes in the Manga/Anime. Or the end of Luffy vs. Arlong.

Going Merry.
Nuff said. -

I'm not going to lie, Ace's death is what gave me that final push to get into the behemoth that is One Piece. It was unavoidable to see if you were on other fairly active forums at the time.
After I've given it time to sink in I've realized that Ace's death is more tragic than Merry's. Merry's = the death of innocence, a sheep (Thousand Sunny, the lion = them fiercely going into the sea ahead of them), Ace's = the death of Luffy's cool, rad brother who he always idolized and saw in a faraway distance as the "Pirate Summit". Amazing that our little hero recovered from that, and I'm glad he did. -
Is this still happening? If so, bar fight or Luffy vs Bellamy.
Both from Jaya.I really say not to show something like Ace's death.

Also Merry's voice was so sweet and it was sad that Merry just wanted to be with them! It's like the Tachikoma's in GITS lol. You know they are artificial but when one gets blown up it's so sad!

What makes Ace's death more tragic, for me at least, is that Merry knew that it was loved by everyone from the get go. We saw Kaya and Merry (the person, not the ship) caring for the ship, then Usopp caring for it, then even Franky doing what he could with it. Merry was a well cared for and loved ship, hence why it developed a Klabautterrman. Ace, for his entire life until meeting the Whitebeard Pirates, except for Luffy, was treated as an outcast and a villain simply because of his bloodline. Only the Whitebeard Pirates, Sabo, Luffy, and Whitebeard himself truly treated him with any love, and his last words really hit home. "Thank you for loving me." That cinched it. To be born without a mother or father, to be raised by Mountain Bandits, and going your entire life thinking that no one can love you… that's heartbreaking. That's why Ace's death is superior.

I'm fairly sure I want to show the defeat Bellamy/knock-up stream two-parter at the end of Jaya, but at the same time, I really only have one episode I'm able to show. The video editing software on my computer sucks, so I can't even show Luffy and Ace flashback because the opening and intro are so spoilerific (I want the crewmates to be a surprise if anyone picks up the show). Also, I can't find nice quality downloads of Jaya and I don't own the DVDs, so I'm kind of stuck still. Thanks for all the ideas everyone; I still have three days to brainstorm.
For the curious, the context is a summer screening at one of the largest anime clubs in the West Coast. Each officer gets a night over the summer when we're less worried about our content to show whatever they want, and this week is my turn. I'm also showing Kemonozume, Fist of the North Star, and Kino no Tabe.

I PM'd you with a super secret website where you can individually download those episodes you can't find. They're from Kaizoku-Fansubs.

I got into one piece through amvs mabye show them an amv aswell, if they like amvs ofcourse, this is a good one to show

There are a number of episodes that I greatly enjoy and have used to successfully get people interested in OP.
1.) Luffy vs. Crocodile finale (Dvorak…'nuff said) - Ep126
2.) Enel defeats everyone...after bringing himself back to life (Enel is BEAST) - Ep181
3.) The Thriller Bark fights set-up episode (don't really know why, but I love how this episode sets the stage for all the fights...plus it shows how dangerous Oars can really be) - Ep357
4.) SH Crew vs. Oars (epic episode showing how everyone knocks Oars down...plus, DOCKING!) - Ep365
5.) DBF Groggy Ring finale (Sanji and Zoro show ultimate teamwork) - Ep212
6.) Luffy vs. Foxy finale (A cool fight that shows Luffy will never go down unless he's dead...plus, that afro is so funky~!) - Ep219
7.) Gear 2nd Luffy vs. Blueno (the introduction of Gear 2nd...still one of the most epic OP moments) - Ep273
8.) Sanji vs. Wanze ("I thought I was gonna die." LOL) - Ep259
9.) Sanji vs. Jyabura (Diable Jambe...plus, only takes one episode) - Ep298
10.) Zoro vs. Kaku (Asura...same reason as above...kinda) - Ep299Not sure how good you may find my suggestions, but I do remember that most of these episodes have either proven naysayers wrong about OP (that it's too kiddy) or gets them excited for the next episode (the set up episodes/middle of fight episodes). Hope things go well when you show it. ^^
-
It's not fair to everyone envolved to show one episode. It would be better to show Music videos and compilations. There are some awsome music videos and several different ones showing various forms of comedy, and badass. 4 or 5 music videos for a total time of one episode would give a better representation of the entire show than just one episode.
-
I think I would show ep 4 too. It doesn't spoil too much yet it still has a complete story within it (:
-
I ended up showing episode 377 and it when over fairly well among people who already had a basic idea of what One Piece was but never gave it the time of day, though it didn't exactly inspire the people who had no concept of the series to begin with. I think it was a reasonable choice and people cheered at the end. Thanks for all of your help!
-
That was a good choice to show people. I'm surprised that people who had no concept of One Piece WEREN'T wow'ed by it, but I suppose fighting a gigantic bear-man would be weird.
Glad it went over well with the people who at least had a concept of it. A lot of people think of One Piece as sunshine, carebears, weird. It's only the last one. It's a dark story now with comedy within it, and it's always been that way. That episode shows them the dark side of OP that people who haven't seen/read it 99% of the time do not know exists.
