I think it's just Axel actually.
General Music Thread

That makes it worse. For a punk group like the Sex Pistols to say fuck you to being portrayed as an attraction is one thing, but for a selfish attention-craving twat like Axl to go against it is a different level of rejection for the hall.
-
resurrects two month old thread with news on one of the biggest stars of rock n' roll declining induction to Hall of Fame
replies are to Zona for his River City Extension sigforever alone :(
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a fucking horrible and irrelevant pile of Boomer bias dung, so I don't think this is big news. Sorry.
-
At least the thread is more active.
BTW Green Day will induct G N R lulz
-
No wonder Axl refused lollll
"Next up, Sonic Youth will be inducted by an honor guard of Bowling for Soup and Hot Chell Rae."
-
Goddammit and I was hoping for a mini-GNR reunion (or at least Axl and Slash getting into a fistfight on stage)
-
So am I to take it that pretty much every single honorary organization has become a total farce?
Anyway, Guns n' Roses. I like 'em. I actually haven't heard nearly enough of their music as I should.
Green Day. Their music's okay. I really like Basket Case.
Bowling for Soup. Hmm, well if they do induct anyone, maybe they could sing the Phineas and Ferb song.
-
I made a list on rym that i never published as to why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sucks (not now, always did).
6. The Illusion of Authority
They very obviously don't pull from a diverse and truly knowledegable pool of "experts", age or taste wise. And thanks to this they continue to contribute to a disgustingly tired narrative of classic rock supremacy and afterwards irrelevancy that plagues many people my age to this day.
5. Arbitrary Hatred
Look, I don't much like Kiss either. But you know what I also think The Eagles aren't shit either, or Paul McCartney's solo career, or many others. You can't put some of these bands in and than act like NO NO NO WE CAN'T PUT THE MONKEES INNN.
Please.
4. Non-Rock in the Rock List
Mostly you hear this complained about by Rock purists who don't want the foul slop of soul, funk, and rap in their gated community. But they're right about it being bullshit. Take it from a massive rap fan.
Look Hall of Fame, I know what you're doing. You don't want to look racist or whatever, and want to look hip and inclusive. But you have a Rock list. So put in all the Jimis, Berrys, Slys, Princes, and so forth you want (how about the Bad Brains? Oh right you hate punk). But don't fucking pander. Putting in extremely obviously outider choices that have no passion behind them at all is fucking insulting. Especially in a Hall of Fame about a different genre, perhaps suggesting Rock encompasses all.
Do their rap choices make sense for a hall of fame? So far yeah, but a real rap passion would warrant hella more choices than they'll ever make. We won't see Jungle Brothers with them, or Mobb Deep, or Main Source. So fuck you. Rap can and should have it's own list. Not be little obligatory guests to someone elses.
3. Obvious Narrow Voter Pool
The same limited tastes seen in it are seen in the awful "500 Best Albums" book Rolling Stone released. Hmm, how funny. Take the genre limitation I mentioned and than apply their obvious favoring of boomer rock, and clear lack of understanding of any importance or care for what came after it. By now more 80's bands would be in past the obvious entries like U2 and REM. Frankly I'd be surprised if we EVER see Joy Division, Husker Du, Smiths, or Sonic Youth in it.
2. Hella Americacentric
It has that ever amazing American condition of fellating the fuck out of 60's British rock and than forgetting anything overseas exists past roughly 1973 or so.
1. Genre Selectiveness
Hope you don't care for Prog, Glam, Punk, Post-Punk, or any form of Metal. Because apparently the "500 rock and roll experts" don't either.
Oh and if you think having two or so people from these counts you're pathetic.
-
One of the main guys on the voting board apparently hates prog, so that's why nothing like Genesis or King motherfucking Crimson are getting in any time soon.
-
Genesis got in recently, but probably for Invisible Touch lol.
And that's just what I mean, some asshole hates a genre of rock and boom it's not getting in.
That's why the whole illusion of them being some sort of relevant authority is ridiculous and infuriating to some degree. They hate music they think is too arty like Prog or Post-Punk, and they hate stuff they see as too fluffy like Kiss or The Monkees.
And they don't give any real shit about any music from younger generations than most of their ages, which of course is Baby Boomers.
So for anything not of their time you get either complete ignoring going on, or you get even worse, insulting pandering bullshit like having two bands from a huge sub-genre in while they manage to find the time to have every damn Beatle apart from Ringo in on a solo career.
Plus if you're from after 1975 and not American you don't exist apparently. -
I like how Madonna had to beg the voting board to even consider Iggy and the StoogesAlso where the fuck is Merle Travis
-
I think there's a limit on when you can be included. You have to have been around for 30 years or something like that before you can be considered. I've never really payed much attention to the hall of fame, not necessarily because of the reasons you posted, though they're good, it just doesn't really affect me in any way.
-
It's not 30 years, Guns N Roses came out in 1987.
-
To Wagomu, the topic of your Upperdeckers album came up and I was just wondering if you guys are recording/planning on recording any more music.
-
What kind of bizarre context did that come up in? Haha. We did the Upperdeckers as a one time thing. Plus, our guitarist graduated and our drummer is graduating. We had a few other song ideas kicking around at the end, though, so maybe we'll have a reunion sometime.
-
That's too bad. Well someone mentioned bashing Mother Teresa instead of someone we were talking about and I remembered one of the songs from the album .
-
Wish I had the time to be in a real band.. All I really need to learn is piano since I'm fairly decent on drums. I could be a one-man band and record shit, lol. Too much time and money would go into it, tho.
-
Burn it down from the new Linking Park album living things was just released today if any fans weren't aware.

River City extension concerts in Ohio are all 2+ hours away and I'm not sure how my parents would react to me going to a death metal concert (Opeth) .
-
I wish I could have made it to that Opeth show, but there have not been a lot of concerts around Albany lately. The last two I went to were in Philadelphia. Toxic Holocaust and a week later Andrew W.K. The Andrew W.K. show was my highlight of the year by far. I got to headbang side by side with the man himself when he played "Don't Stop Living in the Red." Life complete.
Coming up, all I know is that I'm seeing Baroness/Meshuggah/Decapitated on the 18th of May, once again in Philadelphia and Municipal Waste/3 Inches of Blood/Black Tusk up in Albany on the 24th of June.
-
My attention has recently been turned towards music like this.
Now i'm searching for more. Electroswing right?
Artist recommendations please. -
That shit's nice. downloads
I'm way too generous giving away downloads to everything I like but w/e.
-
@ MDL
I realy like the band you posted. Have you heard of Diablo Swing Orchestra? Check them out, theyre this crazy swing/ operatic metal band.
-
Oh great, another swing revival. Wonder how quick this one becomes dated and regretted.
-
Just got home from a 3 hour performance of Diknu Schneeberger; went there with the guitarist I play in a band with. Consider my mind blown.
-
Some stuff going around about Åkerfeldt from Opeth getting into a car accident after their last show. Not sure how serious it is right now, but I hope he's okay. I've only heard about him but it sounds weird that one guy from the band got in an accident and nobody else. Need to find some more coverage for this.
-
I haven't seen any news on that. I hope the dude's okay. He's still peaking now artistically and is a pretty cool dude to boot.

Been on an album spree the last few weeks, so I thought I'd slow down and share my thoughts.
B-52s - Cosmic Thing: I grew up with a lot of the songs on this album (Love Shack, Junebug, Channel Z, etc.) and I still love them as much as I did back then. I also enjoyed a lof of the songs I hadn't heard before or had forgotten about. Cosmic Thing, Deadbeat Club, and Topaz are great. Bushfire is the only one I don't really enjoy, but I'm willing to give that one a few more listens to see if it grows on me.
Nirvana - In Utero: Despite Nevermind being their most commercially successful album, a lot of people have said that this is album is really their best. I haven't listened to all of Nevermind yet, so I can't personally say, but this is a darn good album. I love Heart-Shaped Box (which, until recently, I didn't even know the name of or that it was sung by them), Rape Me, Serve the Servants, and All Apologies. I think I still some time to really get into the grunge feeling though, as most of the other songs don't do much for me. I mean, they're still good (or at least listenable) songs, but to me they sound kind of same-y and don't invoke any feeling out of me. Still, great album.
Rush - 2112: I never really did get into Rush, Fly by Night being pretty much the only song I know by them, but after seeing the PONY 2112 video (yeah, that's a thing) I just had to get this album. 2112 had already wow-ed me on the Pony video and now I'm looking deeper into it and understanding the story behind it, I like it even more. Passage to Bangkok and Twilight Zone are also really good, and I like Tears in that it shows that Rush is capable of doing a slow somber song and that Geddy Lee can tone down his high-pitched girl voice. The other two are kind of forgettable. So yeah, this was definitely good enough to convince me that Rush had some stuff that was really worth listening to, so….
Rush - Hemispheres: I got another Rush album! This was sort of an impulse buy and I had no idea it would follow the same format as 2112. I've only listened to this album about twice now, but I think all the songs on it are good (granted there only four of them). Hemispheres (the song) is a great rock ballad, but I think I prefer 2112 a little more. Circumstances and Trees are good (I like how the latter also provides some social commentary) and La Villa Strangiato...well, it's good, but I think I need a bit more time to fully appreciate it. Well, with me straight on the Rush train I'll probably be getting Moving Pictures and A Farewell to Kings some time in the near future.
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds: Just got this album yesterday, actually, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. Although, I should also say that this isn't my first time listening to the album, as I listened to it once a while back on Youtube. But anyway, an album that many consider to be one of the best all time? Does it deserve those accolades? Well, I think it's still too early for me to say as I still need some time to digest, but I really do enjoy a lot of the songs on here. Wouldn't it be Nice, You Still Believe in Me, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, and Caroline No are some of my favorites at the moment. I just love the joy and positivity of the album. Puts me in a good mood.
-
I love the song 2112. I think having a 20 minute song on an album followed by a few shorter songs that have no relation to the main song kind of makes it hard for me to appreiciate the entire album though, even if the shorter songs are good too. That's mostly what Rush does too.
-

I have a hard time picking between the two myself. I think Nevermind is more consistent, but I think the best moments on In Utero are better than the best moments on Nevermind. All Apologies might be their best song imo.
And dddduuuude you have to listen to the Pixies. They're like Nirvana if Nirvana played upbeat poppy wacky music, they're better, plus Kurt was way influenced by them. They have the same loud-soft dynamic, Nirvana learned it from them after all. They use surf guitar sounds to so there's a bit of Beach Boys in em even.
-
There is a huge list of bands I have going that Nirvana was influenced by that are better than Nirvana. Not that I don't like Nirvana, but if someone listens to Nirvana I like to think that I can at least get them onto the Pixies, the Meat Puppets and the Wipers.
Also, Bleach is my favorite. Most people disagree with me, but I think it's a great picture of grunge. Aggressive and angsty with a sense of humor.

This was my favorite album for a while in grade school, haha. It's a really fun album and does a great job painting the plastic new wave rainbow.

I don't really see how the Meat Puppets are similar to Nirvana even if I know Kurt was a huge fan. Meat Puppets are more like REM if anything (outside the hardcore punk moments).
Husker Du is a better example I'd say. But ddddaaaaamn do more people need to know about and get into the Wipers.
-
Nirvana have covered a couple Meat Puppets songs, so there's a very direct link between the two. But yes, Hüsker Dü's up there, too and also (assuming the fan in question could at least tolerate Bleach) the Melvins. From there, my list are mostly influences that Nirvana doesn't completely sound like (bunch of random metal and punk bands).

I mean sound wise, Meat Puppets don't sound anything like Nirvana. So like it's not really something to point someone toward if they like Nirvana.
But they're friggin awesome anyway so let's just suggest them in general.
-
I would argue that some Meat Puppets songs fit in in terms of the stoner melodies that populate Nirvana's softer songs, but then you managed to pick out my favorite Meat Puppets song there, so I'll shut up, haha.
While we're on the topic of Nirvana listen to the similarities between these songs:

and
The Slayer song came a bit later, too, though that sinister-sounding style had been there's before. Plus, if Nirvana weren't listening to Nirvana just before, then they must have been deaf, considering theat they were metalheads and Reign in Blood had about three years to settle by the time Bleach came out. Still I feel like there's some co-influence going on there. Maybe that's why Seasons in the Abyss focuses on that kind of sinister sound more than the typical thrash energy.

Wow really? I thought I was the only one who thought that song was awesome. Of course what ISN'T on II. One of the best 80's albums.

Oh there's no denying the Metal in Grunge, though I think it's less noticable in Nirvana than say Alice in Chains. But it's definitely there.
Grunge is kind of like the marriage between punk and metal really (and depression). -
I hear you loud and clear on II. That album is a masterpiece from beginning to end.
And no doubt grunge is the runt of metal and punk's litter. That Slayer thing is so uncanny, though. About as close as the Dead Kennedys' California Über Alles is to the Wipers' D-7.

http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/av/2012/05/album-stream-river-city-extension–-dont-let-the-s.html
River City Extension's new album is now out. Here's a stream of it. Not sure right now where it fits, I still think I like their first album the best. I'm leaning to this being my second favorite and then Unmistakable Man being third.
Edit: Although the last song is a little too simplistic for my taste. I think they'll have a hard time topping the ending to their first album.
-

You should check out Smiley Smile if you liked Pet Sounds. It may not be as consistent, but it has two of their greatest songs.. "Wind Chimes" and "Little Pad"
-
I actually like Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, and Surf's Up more than Pet Sounds
-
@The:
I actually like Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, and Surf's Up more than Pet Sounds
Nice, I'm not too into Surf's Up to be honest, but Wild Honey is awesome. Usually (in my experience at least) when someone's mentioned they just picked up/heard Pet Sounds recently, more often than not they hadn't heard Smiley Smile yet so I thought I'd mention it just in case, it's sweet you have!
Pet Sounds is good but I agree it's overly hyped a tad. It's still my third favourite of their albums though, and it's pretty cool that it influenced the Beatles a bunch. -
Well, like many others I'm sure, I just got Pet Sounds for its acclaim as being one of the greatest albums of all time. Really, up until then I'd only heard a few of the Beach Boys goofy fun pop songs (Kokomo, Surfin' USA, I Get Around), but I like what I heard in Pet Sounds, so I'd definitely like to hear more from me. It looks like they're now offering Smiley Smile and Wild Honey as a combo pack (and only a combo pack), so I'll probably pick that up at some point.
Before that though, I think I'd like to get some Pink Floyd action with Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
-

Pink Floyd is meh, Genesis is much more fun far as Prog Rock goes.
-
@Monkey:

Yeah, I love Genesis and I'll try to pick up their albums at some point. Still, I'd like to experience Pink Floyd for myself, maybe see why Dark Side of the Moon is one of the best-selling albums of all time.

I mean like Prog Genesis, like when Peter Gabriel was in charge. You heard that part of the band?
Actually speaking of which have you ever heard Peter Gabriel's third solo album, it's fookin great.
-
@Monkey:
I mean like Prog Genesis, like when Peter Gabriel was in charge. You heard that part of the band?
Nope, just the popular stuff, but I'll look into it.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to post Bus Stop's Kung Fu Fighting remix on the Forced Listening thread, because, you know, my taste in music.
-
Nope, just the popular stuff, but I'll look into it.
So you've heard Genesis, but you haven't heard Genesis. Really completely different.
-
Ah, Gabriel-Era Genesis, when a man could dress like a flower and prance across the stage whilst singing about Revelation and Phil Collins could still tear a drumset apart.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is probably their best beginning-to-end album. Selling England by the Pound and Nursery Cryme are both great. Trespass and Foxtrot are good to very good.
The eighteen versions of From Genesis to Revelation are worthless.
