I'm gonna go to my local shop tomorrow, get some plastic containers, and redo my display shelf. I only wish I had enough space in my room to fit one more detolf, that would solve all my problems. Quite unfortunate in a sense…

Watana blog published and interview of Kengo, the great sculptor that gave us SDX Ace, Brotherhood, MSP Luffy, and more.
Foolio was kind enough to translate the parts about One Piece figures.I was able to meet the figure maker Kengo after the Jump Festa figure sculting contest (blah blah).
Watanabe: Getting right to it, what kind of figures have you made thus far?
Kengo: I've made all kinds of them. I've made 12-inch figures for companies, even for theme parks. I made 12-inch figures exclusively to train and improve. For theme parks I've made small figures that go on the end of lights and sticks sold insde.
Watanabe: I didn't know you did that! The way I came to hear of you was because of the Super DX (MSP) Ace. I heard that this was a figure you yourself came to the manufacturers with the idea of making.
Kengo: That's true. I've worked as an apprentice with various sculptors and honed my skills until now. But now I don't just want to help with a part of a series, I want to start my own brand. I thought the best manufacturer to start this with would be Banpresto, so I went to one of them exhibitions and proposed the idea.
Watanabe: I see. I've got to say, that Ace is truly amazing. It's superb. It really is.
Kengo: Thank you.
Watanabe: The "Brotherhood" that came out in the spring was also amazing. Well done.
Kengo: That one was extremely difficult.
Kengo: I have to take a two-dimensional manga character and recreate him from an essentially impossible perspective. But I did my best to try to make it in the most faithful way possible. I had to consider such things as how short to make Luffy's hair, and I had to find the exact right way to make Luffy and Ace's hips to make it seem natural - At what angle, what height. I redid it time after time.
Watanabe: That kind of obsession really brings those figures to life. Also in my current favorite series, the Grandline Children. I really love those to death.
Kengo: You're too kind!
Watanabe: I got an Ace and Hancock. Ace's scult is truly perfect but I really wish he had the bandaid on his forehead. Sorry for being selfish.
Kengo: Oh, now that you mention it, I didn't put a bandaid, did I? I wonder why.
Watanabe: On the cover of volume 60, Luffy Sabo and Ace all have one.
Kengo: I started all three of those at the same time, and at first they didn't have the bandaids. They were added when I was already in the process of making them. The manufacturers never asked me to add them on the Ace so I left it how it was.
Watanabe: I see. Next is Lucci and Jabura, and after that Robin, Spandam, and Funkfried. I'm really looking forward to that.
Kengo: Lucci and Jabura are only really drawn in the SBSes, so based on those rough drawings I'm making them based on Luffy and Sabo's proportions.
Watanabe: Oh, I see. I though there would have been some more established drawings based on Toei's animation.
Kengo: Oda Sensei's drawings of the childhood body proportions are very different if you compare the current animation to the original ones. I'm basing my proportions on the current version, but right now it's making the characters' foreheads come out too big. Half of Spandam's face is his forehead right now (laughs).
Thanks, Foolio :)

So, his name is Kengo… I might do a very unfriendly visit to him some time. :)

Thanks Foolio for translating that awesome Kengo interview and Elisabeth for posting it. DX Brotherhood for me is definitely 2011 one piece figure of the year. Nice to know Kengo sculpts the whole GLC series. Long may it continue. And I'm looking forward to another epic ala "Brotherhood" figure in 2012 from Kengo-san.

Thank you for translating/posting, Foolio/ElisaHeart! That was a fun and interesting read!

Watana blog published and interview of Kengo, the non great sculptor who made MSP Luffy. So, his name is Kengo… I might do a very unfriendly visit to him some time. :)
Please refrain from bashing. It's fine to have an opinion, but can't you just agree to disagree? This goes for everyone, simply to just avoid flame wars and whatnot, keep our community civil. Let's try to avoid distastefully negative comments, character attacks, etc. They take up pages upon pages with arguments that would be better left for figure discussion and news (and can also be hurtful). Thanks!
Thanks for posting that article, it's very nice to read it (and thanks for translation, Foolio). I guess Kengo is really popular over there in Japan. It's really interesting that he went to them with a finished sculpt of Ace, and it turned out to be (arguably) one of the best things they've ever released, and started the whole MSP line, essentially. I wonder if he sculpted the Jojo ones and the Naruto one as well? The Jotaro MSP is certainly something to behold. I don't see Kengo being credited for more than just MSP Luffy on MFC, which is a shame.
I bet if more people came to Banpresto with amazing OP sculpts it would really change things around. Megahouse has a certain style they keep in line with, but many of us have been longing for OP figures that rival what Alter is putting out. -
Is the sculpt for MSP Ace any different tho? Maybe it's just my untrained eye but it looks pretty much the same as GLM Ace and the first POP sculpt. Personally it just seems that he came to them with that sculpt, they saw another Ace and money signs were in front of their eyes they went with it.
Personally I've yet to be really impressed by any of his. Brotherhood Ace looks anorexic, and thought the only advantage it has is the awesome base. MSP Luffy has a looong neck which kinda creeps me out. And GLC has yet to impress me. Even Robin doesn't look particularly impressive (maybe cus we've got two awesome P.O.Ps of her child version anyways.)
-
hmm… i guess put it this way. Does NEO Robin look just like SW robin to you? The face, the attitude? Does styling? Does snap girls? Attack motions (is there an attack motions keychain? I remember there was something ^_^)? FAZ?
The faces on the aces are totally different, the body type, and the flow of the pose (to me).
-
Anyone can see that Robin and SW Robin looks completely different by the clothes tho. Ace is nearly always in the same pose. Even Chopper in his numerous Brain Point figures usually has significantly different looks.
Although to be honest I did do a quick search and MSP and GLM have different arm pose. But compared to the POP one? Not so much of a difference. One has his mouth open and one closed.
I mean I'm not one to talk, I own pretty much every Cyberman figure released. Hell over the past year I bought a Cyberman with removable head, Cyberman with damaged body, Cyberman with damaged face and hunting for Cyberman with non-cybus chest piece. It's part of the collecting bug.
-
Err, that's about sculpt though, not pose Cyber ^_^;; It's not the clothes that makes it different. Maybe on the surface. It's HOW the clothes were sculpted. It's just like fanarts. Someone can draw Luffy in the same pose as Oda, but it doesn't look the same at all. Everyone has a different style. It's very apparent to me probably because I'm an artist myself, maybe?
In animation, for example, you have to stick to a very specific character design. One Piece doesn't have the best animators, so a lot of times you can tell the artist changes. For Megahouse, they have the sculptors keep to a similar style for musculature, fabric folds, etc. Kengo's Luffy is very different than Sailing Again. SA is angular in clothing, but his physical features rounded. Styling keeps to a certain sculpting style as well, so does half age. MBHs tends to be a little more all over the place, as well as WCFs (WCFs if more of a proportional sculpting difference). -
Like I said. Comparing POP and MSP Ace they look practically the same, only difference is the smile. I need to see something from him that looks completely different to what isn't already released.
I'm not trying to sound rude or anything. I'm sure the ones who collect the Aces can show off tons of differences, just like I can do with most of the Chopper figures everyone else complains about.
-
hmm… MSP ace and POP ace to me are like night and day, sculpt wise. I really think you're speaking more about pose than sculpt style?
and i do think chopper figures can be VERY different. Some are just wrong to me, in the eyes or features.
and LOL you don't sound rude XD
-
POP Neo Ace:
!
SDX Ace:
!
I can see a few significant differences. But I've seen those two in person (thanks again, maggie), so that may be it.
-
and i do think chopper figures can be VERY different. Some are just wrong to me, in the eyes or features.
Did you not see my end of year review? There's a few Chopper figures that are just wrong in general.
I think it's every new sculpter's job to create a Chopper figure at some point lol. I just wish they'd be a bit more creative with him, the potential for him is huge, and I think most OP fans would pay for a POP or GLM of his other forms.
-
Oops, maggie. My apologies. :( I didn't know you applied that sort of rule or read anything about it. I applied my sort of humour on Kengo because he sculpted Luffy MSP, a figure I don't like very much, but without bad intention.
-
The thing we have to remember tho with many many releases of Luffy, Chopper, Ace etc means the more they sell of those the more likely they'll branch into more obscure chars. Look at how well SW Robin or Nami sold in comparison to SW Brook or Franky for example.
Retailers want the chars they'll sell, so they think putting Luffy, Ace, Chopper, Nami or Robin in a set will sell it at the start.
-

LOL don't feel that bad KyonSmith (I know you didn't mean it to be an intentional dig at anyone but Kengo, but kind of badly placed as it was right after the interview post ^_^;). It's kind of an unwritten rule, I suppose? I'm just wanting to keep this place a little more positive and trying to avoid long arguments or flame wars, you know? No one really likes reading those epic 3-page arguments, and I really think it changes the mood on the forum after a while. I also think that opinions become more like statements sometimes, seeming to leave no room for opinion or argument.
I find the opinions on MSP Luffy very divisive, and I really do think it has to do with people's ideas of what Luffy should look like to them. I wasn't so sure about him until I got him, then I warmed up to him immediately. I think that Kengo, that particular sculptor, tries to stay true to the manga, not the anime? I pretty much consider that if you don't want to buy a figure, you're saving money for a different figure you do want! POPs are almost things you have to save up for now, it takes such a big chunk out of my paycheck @_@;;
Now, if I can just like more figures less, then I think I will be in a good spot! XD
Oh, and crease, thanks for posting those little capsule goods! More of the same Ace stuff that I will buy because it's Ace XD
Cyber: Isn't chopper like the mascot of Japan? I heard that from a Japanese friend somewhere, that the image of chopper is very popular. In that I am happy but also sad, because it means that when chopper does get a slot to become a figure, he is made in the 'popular' form (that appeals to everyone?), and not the other forms (I am personally a fan of his monster and heavy point). I am dyyyyinnnnnngggg for a heavy point chopper POP…
-
Is it worth getting the Banpresto DX Marines over the FZ Admirals? I was also curious in the size of Garp DX v. Admirals DX. Oh I so wish for a Sengoku and Garp GLM!! Admirals GLM!!

Bootleg pic of luffy sailing again POP as promised, he looks pretty good for a bootleg, just missing a toei sticker and the box art kinda printed light on it, not the full vibrant colours on it, but otherwise u can be fooled :-/

Finally bothered to open my POPs. Very happy about them both. I think they're the first POPs since….hmmmm... Bikini Hancock that's actually been really decent. (Sorry Perona, Rayleigh and Eneru. But your stupidly large boxes make it difficult to like you.)
-
Which ones? Or do you mean WCF in general? I thought you already collected them XD
WCF in general. And no. The first WCF I saw in boxes were the SW ones. My first thought was that they were small cheap figures, because I had gotten my first large POP (SW Luffy) on that same day, in that same shop. Then the prices skyrocketed and I went "wtf? Are they that sought after?" etc. But I decided not to collect them anyways. Mainly because of their size, and "inferiority" compared to the POPs. To each their own in that respect though.
-
Neither the pose nor the sculpt of POP Ace is similar to MSP/Super DX Ace. Like maggie said, they're like day and night. Even the 1.5 repainted POP Ace can't rival the great MSP Ace. And Kengo's figures become better when you see it in person, trust me. The same thing for POP CB Ace-Luffy-Sabo vs GLC Ace-Luffy-Sabo. The art style, color pick, pose, of Kengo figures are so Oda-ish IMHO. The interview was excellent in revealing that MSP line basically started by Kengo submitting his prototype to Banpresto. And with Banpresto inviting more great sculptors to sculpt OP figures (with the Figure tournament), we can be rest assured there would be many great big scaled OP figures. The quality of DB Scultures and Kuji (from the same tournament) have impressed me so far and I can see the same thing for OP Scultures. 2012 would be a great year for OP figures collectors. OMG I can't wait for Wiper, Jango, Dalton, Lucci from that line.
