Damn you all really want to reach a thousand pages don't you? Listen, unless something extreme abrupt happens Jinbe is in.
Last Two Nakamates (vol. 5)

OMG Cym just suggested that Jinbe was only created by Oda foreshadowed all that time & went through all of that with Luffy only to die SHIT JUST GOT FUNNIER!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
It's actually an established writing technique - I'm not saying Oda will do it George R. R. Martin style, or Yoda style. Probably more like Suikoden when Gremio is involved but even that doesn't suit it. Aeris from FF7 would probably be closest if she joined later rather then earlier.
-
@Superbear:
Damn you all really want to reach a thousand pages don't you? Listen, unless something extreme abrupt happens Jinbe is in.
That is possibly why Oda made us wait for his answer.
-
I'd hate for something like Aeris's death from FFVII. It was a pointless twist that served no function in story and was only there to tug on the player's emotions. And Oda's already said he hates killing off characters when the plot doesn't demand it because its a cheap way of pulling on people emotions

@The:
That is possibly why Oda made us wait for his answer.
Oda made us wait for his answer because of two reasons
1. it makes a good cliffhanger
2. We're only going to get Jinbe to join after some emotional flashback and reactions, so we'll only get the answer by the end of next chapter earliest -

I think one of the cooler parts of One Piece is how the characters develop in the crew. They really have profound effects on each other as the ineractions between different characters bring out new faces we hadn't seen before. Zoro's evolution from the straight man to one of the least sane is a good example. The new crew members and experiences brought out the silly side of his arrogance and strength. I thought the starting point of his character was pretty generic (let's face it, the strong arrogant serious character is a generic shonen staple), but he's grown a hell of a lot into one of my favorites. No matter what anyone may think of Jinbe now, he's going to evolve. Knowing Oda, it will probably be for the better.
I like Jinbe as he is now. I do see him as a bit generic, but I see further his potential to mix things up in the regular storytelling. He's diplomatically inclined and yet prone to solving his problems with violence. I'm sure that will be played out, among other things.
Also, I know that there is a lot to him that we have yet to see. We've really only seen him in serious situations (imprisoned in Impel Down, fighting in a war during Marineford, keeping Luffy from killing himself in the postwar, protecting his entire race from the threat of itself). He'll fit in much more naturally when he gets a chance to relax.
-
I don't really see Robin as a straight man. A lot of the Straw Hat's antics don't ever seem to phase her. I see Nami as more of a straight man than her. Though I kind of see the role itself being passed around between Zoro, Nami, and sometimes Sanji depending on the situation.
-

Exactly. I'd agree with this completely. And given some of Jinbe's reactions, he'd be a pretty great straight man as well. Also, Usopp is used as a straightman quite a bit as well
-
Everybody's a straightman!
Zoro
Nami
Usopp
Robin
SanjiMore than half the crew!
Who needs any more? Hahahaha!
-
Funny how Brook and Franky never are.
-
The thing is, many SHs act as ones to varying degrees, but we don't really have a dedicated one.

All chips on Bonney being the last crew member.
-
@Superbear:
All chips on Bonney being the last crew member.
Even if that is a joke, her ability is too linear. Zero room for growth.
-
Honestly though, I think Jinbe's gag should be taking everything way too seriously
imagine: I'll get this dance right even if it costs me my life!
-
@The:

We said he same thing about Brook back in 2010, look what happened. And we don't know what her ability truly is to begin with, so….... I don't see your point.
-

No one said that.

Oh dear, we're probably gonna hit 1000 pages long before next week at this rate. To save space, I'll only post now and then one more time; then I propose we at least wait until it's totally official before starting a new thread.
@Zik:
But some of you Jinbei supporters were right, seems he's joining.
Technically speaking, shouldn't all Jinbe supporters be right? Maybe some right for the wrong reasons, but still?
Well once it is all official - I suspect Jinbei is joining to be the SH that dies - the real one not another Merry style.
Jinbei seems to be more a sacrificial lamb personality - endearing enough that he will fit in but not so long standing that he he will shatter peoples souls when he bites it. I mean out of all the SH's the only one I suspected being acutally killed was going to be Brook or Franky. I'll wait till it is official though before I start thinking deeper into it.
Please, don't think deeper into it. I know you're sad about Hachi, but Jinbe joining just to die? To be frank, I kinda expected better of you…

Doesn't even have his Enel style facefault.
I can NOT believe I missed that! I was planning on making an update anyway, so that's the first thing I'll do.
-
@The:
No one said that.
You missed people saying when the time skip happened that Brook's abilities were only going to be rooted in his fencing and musical abilities and not with the Yomi yomi?
Everyone, everywhere was under the impression that the Yomi yomi just kept Brook "alive" and that was it.

2011 =/= 2010
-
@The:
2011 =/= 2010
People said the same thing when he first joined as well, no one excepted his abilities to incorporate Yomi Yomi and seeing as how there was nothing special about from the start (other than the obvious) people assumed that it was simply a "dead-end" Devil Fruit . Parameica fruits (especially with reoccurring characters) always have secondary functions and hidden potential.
-
Do we need more than one?
And even Robin had her moments. One chapter after she joined (and the first chapter in which we clearly saw her true self), and she was bribing Nami, helping Luffy impersonate Chopper and scarying Usopp.
Exactly. Jinbe isn't officially a nakama yet.
Give him a few chapters, have him interact with the crew outside of a battle and I'm sure he'll show more personality. Give him the benefit of the doubt. -
@The:
Even if that is a joke, her ability is too linear. Zero room for growth.
This. Anyone that thinks Bonney would join is gonna be in for a world of disappointment. Women with hack abilities cannot and will not join. Just ask Perona (and her ability to pacify an entire army), Hancock (her ability to petrify an entire army), and Shirahoshi (her ability to conquer the sea with Sea Kings). They're abilities are completely overpowered, but Bonney would be the worse. Do you honestly think Oda would have her join when all she has to do is change someone's age and the fight's over? GTHO if you do. She'll reappear for sure, but she will never, EVER be more than just a side character.

Robin would like to have a word with you. And people seem to forget that her magic age power didn't help her out too much when she fought Teach and his crew.
Predicted next post:
Robin wasn't hax! She was blah blah.
-
Jinbe joins. Caribou kills him before they set off.
That's how likely I think Bonney will join the crew.

If she joins, the crew will have two gluttons. Before they find One Piece, the rest will just die of hunger.

There was a bunch of room for growth in all of the character he mentioned. Robin was mad versatile from day one, as was Perona and Shirohoshi is a useless sushi.
Bonney's ability is linear. Age up/ Age down. Granted, we have no idea what else she can do or venhow the power works but as of now it does only two things.
Also, I hope this is just an argument for argument's sake because the notion of Bonney joining is completely retarded.

Hey guys, i find a post from a user at mangastream forum about next nakama.He say that he already knows who next nakama is because there is a leaked information from someone that enter ODA's office and take the picture
He say that the next nakama is Shirahoshi
here is his post
how Shirahoshi becomes Next Nakama~
Shirahoshi is told by the Sea Kings and her own father she is responsible for getting Noah repaired. The only way to repair it is with the wood from the Tree Of Adam. Which is found at the end of the world (the black market doesn't have the large amount needed that it obtained from the war from long, long, ago). Luffy suggest he could take her. The idea is considered impossible. But the King suggest a way to fix her inability to travel with them by using the tamatebako. Something her mother used long ago. But it turns out Caribou stole it (along with all the rest of the treasure in Ryugo Palace).
how Jinbe does not~
Jinbe agrees to join but leaves the crew after Luffy destroys fishman island after completely disregarding Jinbe's suggestion and doing what he wants. Jinbe actually becomes Luffies enemy after the incident.
I can't say much more then that without ruining the surprise of why Luffy destroys the island
What do you guys all think?

Yeah, because we knew nothing about her or how her abilities worked. Linear? For 300 chapters Luffy was linear, all he did was stretch.
P.S Perona could only do two things and Robin could only do one thing.

What else could he do from the start of the story to Water7 besides stretch? Tell me. Go on I'll wait. By the way at chapter 300 we're still in Skypiea.

The fact that he can stretch any part of his body is versatile enough, it covers a lot of combinations. Plus, he is resistant to many form of physical harm.

He could stretch every part of his body, variable lengths. The way in which he could use this power is as follows:
- He could blow himself up like a balloon to deflect projectiles
- His reach was extended allowing him to punch and kick "out of reach enemies"
- He was impervious to all forms of blunt damage.
- He could make his body go limp to dodge attacks.
Robin can create a legion of body parts.
- She could create things with them such as larger body parts
- She could create hands on the opponent to use submission techniques
- Eyes and ears could be created for Spying
- etc.
Perona can create ghosts as well as become one herself.
- Ghost of various sizes which could explode on command.
- Sends out ghost sentries which can relay information to her.
Bonney can change the ages of people
- Bonney can make people older/younger to make them possibly useless
- Bonney can change people's age for deception
- No seen combat purpose
-

But from what I understand from what The Last King stated is that versatility lies in the number of things you can do, not how you use one thing.
-
@Superbear:

You need to learn the definitions of versatile and linear.

The aspect of Jinbe Im looking forward to the most is the old campaigner a character trope I love that we have been missing in One Piece. Luffy has had several mentors along the way Garp, Shanks, Rayleigh but we needed one on the crew. sure Brook could fuffil that role but hes too off the wall usually. Give him a chance his interactions with Luffy pre-plaza battle cracked me up. The scene between him and luffy at the end of the last chapter was brilliant one of the better request scenes in my opinion Luffy looks so happy beside Jinbe

That's one of my problems with Jinbe actually. I don't like his mentor mentality.

I said all the things he could "do" not what he was immune to, but two of the things you mentioned relate back to stretching. Going limp is a very situational tactic that was only used for one portion of a fight, but I guess its enough to prove your point.
Every thing else proved nothing.
Robin sprouted limbs= one thing
Perona did two things, I said she could do two things.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
You need to read up on time powered based characters, because your ignorance is appalling.

well I mean we cant do much about that can we. Its a common trope and to be honest I am surprised it took this long for Oda to give us one. Trust in Oda. Thats all I can say. But just cause you dont like mentor characters does not make jinbe a good one. Thats like saying Tom Brady sucks just cause you dont like football or Quarterbacks.

It could be we don't know, but if a character has an ability that relates to time in any sort of way in a story, you need to sit up and pay attention because that character is going to be very important.

Nonono, you misunderstand me. Mentor characters are cool and all and I like Jinbe and Rayleigh as mentor characters. I just don't think they should follow the crew along and help them on their journey. Mentors teach and then let go.

Ok. But the problem with Bonney's ability is that she is very powerful if she can apply her hax to the guy she's fighting. But if it didn't work, it is hard to imagine if her ability can compliment her combat techniques to do more damage or be more effective. It is hard to be creative with her.
