First of, I'm not really that impressed with the title and must say that almost all the other movies have had better ones but I suppose it will work. Z really looks like he might have something to do with the marines but I hope they won't pull a Gasparde again. His robotic arm or whatever it will turn out to be kinda make me think of Hellboy but that's just because of the design.
Nice to see Masayuki Sato back as the Animation Director, though I was secretly kinda hoping they would let Noboru Koizumi do this one. And I'm hoping for some nice animation from Naoki Tate aswell. Eisaku Inoue would also have been acceptable. Hmm I wonder if they will "pull a Strong World" with the clothes or let them have their time skip outfits. All in all, I'm really looking forward to this movie.
-
His arm reminds me of Emperoro Zurg from Toy Story 2
-
I don't think Z will necessarily have anything to do with the marines. Whitebeard had a very similar coat, as well, and he was never in the marines.

Koizumi has had nothing to do with One Piece since Episode 295….There was never any chance whatsoever of him being involved with this in any way. And they'll likely have the timeskip outfits, since part of the draw for this is that it's the first post-timeskip film.

It's not just the coat, it's the JR. It's clearly meant to be some sort of callback to the Marine mark.
-
I don't mind the name, bad guy looks pretty cool too. New teaser, reminds me of the teasers movie 10 had before actual previews, its getting me really excited. I'm really loving the poster, am thinking of replacing my avatar with it.

That's why I was secretly hoping for an unannounced return to One Piece… And yeah they will hopefully have
the outfits but I suppose they could change into other clothes for whatever reason. I miss Koizumi... -

he have similarities and i dunno what Oda is plotting :)

For all we know Toei gave him the boot. It wouldn't make sense to randomly bring him back for a movie. Plus with him not drawing OP in all that time it's very likely he's gotten a lot worse at drawing the characters.

So here's Z's jolly roger in comparison to the Marine's one.
Z:!

If you rotate the marines symbol and take the skull with the sword from Z and stub the marine symbol you get:!
Which I think is pretty much Z's jolly roger.

Well it's more like a little more then 5 years since his last episode was in early 2007 but yeah I know it would be no chance of him returning, I just think it's a shame that he doesn't do any more One Piece since I think he was one of the better ones.

I hope this movie has a named enemy for each of the straw hats it's a movie not a filler episode so they have time to give them each a fight however they did not do this in strong world which is what i did not like about the movie!
-
^ I like this post because it implies the movies are something other than long filler episodes.

It'd be a bad idea for all of the Strawhats to get their own individual fights. If the movie's 90 minutes (like the big ones usually are), and everyone got equal screen time, that'd mean each fight would have to be 10 minutes (and that's if there was nothing but fights).
-
Actually the movies are closer to two hours now.
Forget about everyone getting a fight, I hope this one gives all the characters enough to do. That was one of Strong World's failings. Luffy and Nami obviously got the two biggest roles, Usopp and Chopper had an okay amount of screentime, but then Zoro and Sanji felt like they were just kinda there (the former more than the latter), while Robin, Franky, and Brook were barely even in the movie.

Brook got to show off vs the flesh eating ants because he got pissed off they did not go for him lol!

They don't need the exact same screen time some of the fighting can be done off screen just to show they get to fight a named person that's all for example we would still see luffy and Zoro fighting longer than the others in their fights because they're fighting stronger people.
This is a movie not a normal episode it goes for more than 4 times longer than a anime episode.

Indeed. Most of the movies in general leave out certain characters. It's sad.
Though if everyone had to work together to find some ~secret treasure~, that'd be even worse.

What's the point of having named villains if most of them are gonna get beaten off-screen?
It's one thing to have a fight like Usopp vs. Chew (which could take 5 minutes easy). But if all the villains get beaten so quickly, it says that they weren't much of a threat in the first place (which contradicts the whole "greatest villain yet" shpeal).
@Law:

So in about 4 episodes time, the plot's going to be introduced, everything in the movie happens, and then it's concluded. It's not a good amount of time to get stuff done.
The 9th movie was pretty good about it (as an example directly translated from the anime), but even then people got left out.
-
the thing with one piece movies is that since there's many main characters, you can't really focus on each of them equally, it's not like bleach or naruto who you know who's gonna appear more !
each one piece movie had a centerfic, there was a special chopper, a special zoro centered, the movie 7 gave to robin a nice time slot too, strong world was centered on luffy, nami, billy, of course even if there was each moment with each character they can't spend hours on them too or the movie will be better a new arc!
-
I wonder what a Sanji-centered movie would be like.
-
MELLORINE~ for 120 minutes? Maybe some Diable Jambe here and there…
-
And even that would be still better than movies 3 and 5 were.
..now that i think about it, maybe 5 would be better if it was 90 minutes of Zoro sleeping. -
character-centered movies were pretty bad. unless you count Strong World as a Nami movie. anyway episode 319 was an excellent Sanji filler related to All Blue. they could easily pull a great Sanji movie doing something similar.
-
I'm not sure what a Sanji-centered movie would revolve around (besides the obvious: All Blue, cooking, proving he can protect something, etc.), but it's been a long time coming considering his status on the crew. Hell, Chopper got 2 movies dedicated to him (albeit, Movie 3 was meh, but Movie 9 was still great)! I know that I would love to see a movie that centered around Sanji trying to get a "good" picture of himself for a Wanted Poster…going as far as running to Marine HQ and/or Marie Jois and stirring up trouble and posing for pictures and fighting against some strong marines, all while the SH crew is chasing after and trying to stop him and getting mixed up in his trouble (though this idea would probably only work for a 30 minute movie). XD I'd even take a Movie 9-ish version of the Baratie Arc with the current crew minus Sanji. I'd love to see how that arc would be if more original characters were added to Kreig's crew and were actually more dangerous...plus, the idea of a more up-to-date version of Sanji VS. Gin is awesome! I know it sounds stupid, but hey, people doubted Movie 9, and that one turned out to be one of the better movies...especially for a "What if?" story. ^^
-
I dunno, a Sanji-centric move could have the Big Bad trying to starve an island or something.
The thing is, some characters are easier to base films around than others. I'm sure it's no coincidence that Movies 9 and 10 (despite the latter being an abridgement of existing material) were better than 3 and 5 because it's easier to get more emotional mileage and angst out of Chopper's and Nami's characters than someone like Zoro.
Anyway, I hold that Movie 5 would've been much improved if the supernatural elements were toned down a bit and Zoro didn't act so blatantly out of character.
-
good news. looking forward to it

Yup, that was my main complaint regarding movie 5…

The first movie after the time skip and in the new world i hope that they do a good job with it!

isnt your sig kind of a spoiler for people who dont read the manga….?
In the regard that it reveals who joins the strawhats (if thats accurate, I don't read the manga)
-
HYPED .
Surpass Strong World, huh? Let's see.
Being honest, SW on a whole isn't that spectacular. The plot is very reminescet of the Arlong arc, while Shiki is an unlikeable jerkass not even remotely close to his personality in Chapter 0. It was mostly the buildup that made people anticipate it as much. Plus Shiki is the only real fight n the whoke thing, as his whole giant pirate aliance is absolutely pointless and nearly nonexistent in the movie.
Plus it spawned the Mariana trench of ideas that was Little East Blue and….that which shall not be named.
-

Can someone refresh my memory on the "Out of Character Zoro"?
My memory is really hazy on movie 5, besides they sort of screwed Zoro's past (if I recall correctly). Is there any date for when this movie will actually be released?

Story wise I would take Movie 4 (Dead End Adventure) over Strong World. Even though Movie 4 rehashed so many things from the series itself.

From what I've seen of it it seems to be perfect for a movie adaption.

Can someone refresh my memory on the "Out of Character Zoro"?
My memory is really hazy on movie 5, besides they sort of screwed Zoro's past (if I recall correctly).Basically Zoro briefly helps out an old friend from his bounty hunting and dojo days, Saga, whose now the instructor at a Navy dojo, find these three jewels. That alone isn't the problem. The problem is that Saga recovers these jewels by having the marines under his command ransack the local peaceful village. The problem is that not only does Zoro participate in this raid against unarmed, peaceful villagers, but he gets into a real fight with Sanji and (temporarily at least, this is One Piece after all) cuts up his arm. Zoro makes no effort to explain himself to the other Straw Hats at all, and aside from a throwaway comment by Sanji at the end of the movie, nothing comes of this altercation at all.
isnt your sig kind of a spoiler for people who dont read the manga….?
Really, Jimbei joined the crew? When was that?
-
My apologies, I should have made myself more clear. I don't read the manga so I don't know if that sig is accurate or not, that's why I was asking if it was a spoiler.
In retrospect I probably should have just sent a PM.
Again, sorry.
-
I'd like a Sanji-centric movie to be like the cooking channel.
-

Wow, a lot of that slipped my mind. I need to rewatch that.
Personally the movie can't be too bad as long as they don't do another rework of a previous arc (Drum). Only arc that might work like that is Enies Lobby,
but I would greatly prefer a new story (no matter how crappy) over a rework. -
cant wait cant wait cant wait ! does anybody have any update to info on the movie?

i thought the zoro centric film was number 6 and 5 was the one with ex-marine gummy bear
don't the movies go:
1: Bearman
2: Skeleton Pirate
3: House of cards
4: Chopper's animal land
5: Captain Gummy Bear
6: Zoro Saga
7: Robots
8: Alabasta again
9: Chopper (again)
10: Strong world

Bear King appears in movie 2, the skeleton pirate appears in the first TV special, I have no idea what you mean by "house of cards", Chopper's animal island is in movie 3, the rock candy Logia is in movie 4, the Zoro-centric film is movie 5, you skipped over the real movie 6, and the list is correct from then on.
-
No, you were counting the Ganzack OVA as a movie and then skipped movies 6 and 11. So your whole list is off.
Actually, it's more like…1: El Drago, KING OF GOLD
2: House of Cards
3: Chopper's animal land
4:Cheap Crocodile KnockoffCaptain Gummy Bear
5: Zoro going out of character Saga
6: Awesome Experimental very dark plot with great animation
7: Robots and Physics-defying breasts
8: Alabasta again, on fast forward and bad
9: Chopper again, with movie 6 level animation and win
10: Strong world
11: 3D CGI for no reason, Old man and Dog.
12: Z -
Well I just watched Movie 5 and I agree that was some really terrible stuff.
Personally I find it surprising how good some of the art was though, and the environments were really beautiful in some scenes. But still, I hate having all the religious/supernatural stuff, and that is the one thing I really liked about One Piece over other Manga/Animes.
Zoro acted in character right up till the moment where he woke up, and then it all went down the drain from there.
Zoro: "I give you my life." :wassat:Also, why the hell is something that is supposedly so powerful it could plummet the world into some horrific war, able to be one shotted by Zoro?
Really just crappy. Movie 4 still reigns as one of my favorites, despite ripping off good amounts from the actual series. -
No… This list is actually confusing.

He means the Trump Siblings, aka Movie 2. And I think by "Bearman" he might mean El Drago. I think.
-
It might be although I thought it was it's own movie. The baddie looks like a bear. I'll look it up.
I can't believe I forgot movie 6. The dark one. It's actually my fav after strongworld. I didn't count the 3D movie because I felt it was more like a special.
I meant the trump siblings. I only remembered that they were all based on cards (king, queen, jack and joker)
Edit: ok so the bearman was actually Bear King from the trump siblings and i had him mixed up with El Drago. My mistake
-
Also, why the hell is something that is supposedly so powerful it could plummet the world into some horrific war, able to be one shotted by Zoro?
In his defense, Luffy did just soften him up a lot.
You know, that was actually a pretty nice, lengthy fight now that I think back on it. Despite the character art being a little weaker than Movie 4's and the colors being a bit garish at times, the action was largely very well-animated. The whole supernatural darkness motif just didn't fit the series at all.

The first, what, 10-20 minutes are incredible. Pure style. The intro is just. . .WOW. Great.
The movie then moves onto really less spectacular stuff. The plot's nothing great, and that HUGE pirate army could've used some cool fights instead of the boring curbstomps that were Dr. Indigo vs. Zoro and Sanji vs. Giant Monkey.
Still, Shiki is cool. He gets really jerkass for jerksass's sake, that was weak, but the interactions with Indigo and Monkey were pretty funny, and his overall idioticness did make his character more likable.
The action was neat and the production values above average, so I thought overall it was pretty good.
-
At this point, the only reason I look forward to more OP movies is more soundtrack for the anime.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also, I did think the art-style at the end of SW where Luffy goes Gear Second through Gigant Axe was pretty nifty. But I could see how some would have the exact opposite reaction.

Wonder who'll appear in the movie other than Strawhats? Will we have cameos from other characters?

Dunno how much of this is new, but SI has a really good page with all the information and media for the movie in one place:
