I kinda hate to use foreign words when they are not necessary. I think the only thing I don't like translated are attack names (because they really sound silly anyway and sometimes use puns that can't be easily translated) or words that use foreign language even in the original (like Oda using french or italian in some attack names). I don't like to translate proper names, but titles/nicknames with meaning like "Shirohige" or "Mugiwara" should be translated.

I had mixed feelings for the official translation here in Brazil. They would usually do a good job, but I particularly hated them calling Whitebeard "Shirohige" instead of just calling him "Barba Branca". They also translated Kurohige to "Barba Negra" (Blackbeard), but kept calling the pirate crew as the "Kurohige pirates", which was weird.

IMO, a translated text should keep its meaning, not its original sounds.

Depends which term iam more used to.
Many german terms i use like never and so its way easier for me to use the english terms. Sometimes while discussing my friends may not know what i mean when i use the english term, but seeing that many read also the spoilers, theyre normally used to such more common terms like nakama, celestrial dragons, etc.

I usually translate the words myself and use them so much that my friends end up using them translated as well. No one here calls "Barba Branca" Whitebeard or Shirohige, but there are a lot of brazilians in forums using those untranslated terms.

I don't know where you download it from, but on pieceproject At least on the anime I do something like this.
First episode where a new character appears - Puts ephitet on japanese with translation note
Following episodes - Puts it in portuguese.
I guess the only term I leave on japanese is Akuma no Mi, cause I dislike the sound of "Fruta do Demônio" (Devil Fruit).
Oh, attacks I also always put in japanese with TN

Only Word I like is 'nakama' .I think it sounds better and is more meaningful then 'crew' or 'shipmates'….or how Viz translates it: 'underlings'

Also,I prefer the untranslated names of the devil fruits,like Gomu,bara,hito,etc.....

But you reminded me of something: the individual fruits names I prefer to hear in japanese ("Gomu Gomu" sound a loooooot better than "Borracha Borracha"; usually the portuguese names are too long and ruin the two-syllabe scheme of the Devil Fruits names)

I generally just use the English translation for everything but attack names, out of habit. When I was describing Rokushiki to my roommate recently I used Shigan, Rankyaku, Tekkai, etc., but I told him what they mean in English too.

I like to separate the "La" from "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" when I pronunciate it in front of a Spanish speaking person. :ninja:

The only ones I know the translation of Rokushiki is Geppo, Kamie and Rokougan. The rest I even have bad time trying to remember the Japanese name.

Yeah, these three I rarely translate also. Ok, I guess I never actually do LOL
There are a few times when I also use Shirohige instead of Barba Branca White Beard, du'h because people here are kinda used to it. Also, they seem to forget that his real name is Edward Newgate, so I guess his ephitet is really the best to be used even when only talking about. These four, at least here, dudes tend to forget real names. Sakazuki is the top forgotten one.

I actually disagree.

Those are not names, they're simply code names.
Just like Whitebeard, Straw Hats, Supernova, Axe-hand (Morgan), etc, they should have been popularized with translated names.

But oh well, it's too late now.

For me,the Admirals wouldn't be very menacing if they were called Red Dog, Yellow Monkey, and Blue Pheasant.
Especially for Borsalino and Kuzan.

Translation is supposed to translate the original context. That includes impressions.

I don't know what terms my country uses…

I know what I use sometimes: Devil fruit - Démongyümi (basically means demonfruitey. Yes, it's stupid.). Also some terms translated into my language can sound silly. Like "Hajóvágó" - Ship-cutter.
I can remember one really clever translation in the Hungarian subs: Chopper's rumble balls are called "turbógombóc" which is probably a pun to a tasty Hungarian (I'm not sure if it's Hungarian though) food "túrógombóc".

Otherwise, I'm completely clueless about the One Piece community here.

I understand what he's trying to convey in that as readers with English as a first language, such "codenames" seem to carry a more abstract tone than fully and immediately recognizing the meaning of the term/phrase. But I do agree that that is how translation should work, that if it's not a direct name but an epithet or title it should be translated to fully convey its meaning. Now as a translator though, would you have it be smushed together a la RedDog/Reddog or does the Japanese phrasing work differently and it should be separated upon translation a la Red Dog?

Germany used to have the Admirals translates, but since the war they were changed back to their original names. Also for the last two volumes they've started using things like
-San and -Chan (Unless you count Sadie. She had -Chan, too.. But no one else used it until 59). They also changed Monster Strike (…) back to Oni Gir. Devil Fruits are Teufelsfrüchte.

But if I'm not mistaken, the first time we heard of them, we didn't know that Aokiji, Kizaru and Akainu were only code names. It's only with robin's flashback that we've learnt Aokiji's real name : Kuzan.

The question is about the kind of Justice Kizaru follows, it's written on the wall. We already knew Aokiji's, "Lazy Justice". The others are: Akainu - Complete (Absolute?) Justice, Kizaru - Uncertain Justice, and Oda - I love Anpanman (seems to be an anime character).
Oda says Aokiji used to have "Blazing Justice" in the time of Robin's flashback, but it changed. He also says some big incident happened in the Marines, and he wants to draw it soon.

Interesting question about drawing characters speaking with the mouth closed, but you probably don't care too much.

Fifth page:

The reader found the Fishman Nami that Luffy drew.
Dumb joke. Better joke. Then someone asks what TD is. Oda says it's a Tone Dial. It's sold in pairs, and works like a CD. :P

Since you asked, I'm explaining a little better. Oda says it's a technology that was developed in these two years. It's the same shell from Sky Island that stored sound. They were successful in cultivating and improving it. Now it's sold in pairs and you can enjoy stereo music attaching it to headphones or record players.

Yes, the SBS this time was full of interesting info!

The Gyro question was a stupid one. The reader says he woke up one day with a crab hand and wants to boil it, whatever. The pics can be very misleading. :P
