Oh, Robby unleashed the beast. I was just ignoring that guy.
As to the anime: Yeah, the animation was great. Hope it stays at this level. I'll be watching for sure.

WOW just saw the episode, didn't even know it was coming out this early. Liking this soundtrack so far and the new voices are pretty spot on to me. I think I'm going to enjoy this, oh and the hisoka shots in the ending song, loved it.
Although the opening is weak, the new ending is magnificent.
Honestly I'm on middle ground between hating & accepting the chimera arc.
From one side; yes it was important to the plot, we got introduced to a new level of hunters, Netero died, Kaito died, we learned more about the world, we saw how the Ryudans fight, the consequences about Gon condition is yet to be revealed, Killua evolved both mentally & physically, he's now on his own mission to save Gon & who knows if he'll continue travelling with him afterwards and we got introduced to Jairo who will with no doubt play a major role in the series later on.
But from the other side; Even ignoring those painfully annoying hiatuses, the arc was incredibly long (more than 40% of the WHOLE SERIES for crying out loud), it strayed away from the established plot for Gon (finding his father) & that of the supporting cast (Kurapika X Ryudan, Leorio w/ his Doctor-ship, Hisoka X Churoro) needlessly for too long. Heck if we made a panel count I think the king will be the 3rd prominent character after Gon & Killua (& the fact that I personally didn't like him doesn't help me either).
Another thing annoys me (which I concur IS debatable) is how the power levels will go from now on. Will the king remain the "ultimate" fighter in HxH verse, or will we meet stronger fighters? Was Netero really one of the world's best, or just an old man who long passed his prime? If there is hunters out there at the king's level then why weren't they hired to dispose of him without any sacrifices? If not then "future" Gon (which Pitou described as on par with the king) was way overpowered.
All in all, to me calling this arc a total waste is an overstatement. But also calling it a masterpiece is an over exaggeration, considering how long it lasted and swayed away from the rest of the series.
Skipea comparison is totally irrelevant, SHs were simply doing there thing (go to new island & hit the big bad boss), Chimera arc is about Gon & kiluua suddenly finding themselves dragged into the middle of sh!t & "having" to fight their way through (oops, Kaito died so we have to try to bring him back).
But where's Kaito?
But where's Kaito?
Original Kaito or Baby Chimera Kaito?
Original Kaito is dead, his corpse is at he hunters (Gon & the gang) base in the city which I don't remember it's name.
Baby Chimera Kaito is raised by Reina's big brother.
The OP was ok, loved the ED though. They did a good job of making Hisoka look like the insane badass he is. Never saw the first anime so I'm personally looking forward to seeing the series animated.
@Bad:
But from the other side; Even ignoring those painfully annoying hiatuses, the arc was incredibly long (more than 40% of the WHOLE SERIES for crying out loud),
No. It's 40% of the series… currently. That's an important distinction. If Togashi ever gets on a real schedule againit won't retain that percentage for long.
Once upon a time at 9 volumes Skypiea was 34% of all of One Piece. Now its barely 13%, and shrinking with every chapter. Once upon a time at 11 volumes the Saiyan/Namek saga was 50% of all of Dragonball... now its only 20%... and even less if you count anime filler and GT and movies. Every single main arc in Negima is the length of the entire series prior to it. (Yes, Negima doubles in length with every major arc.)
Can't really judge how lengthy or overlong this arc was in the grand scheme of the series... until the series is done.
it strayed away from the established plot for Gon (finding his father)
While thats an end series goal for him and its a vague motivation to try something, its hardly what he spends every waking moment striving for. Greed Island could have taken him to his father, but that was only relevent for going there, and then the final chapter of the arc, the rest had nothing to do with that. The auction in York New and getting caught up in Kurapika's drama and fighting the spiders? That was just to try and get to Greed Island! Getting Killua from his house? Going to Battle Tower? Learning about pottery for a chapter? What did those have to do with finding his father, other than provide extreme situations and grounds for training?
This led to Ging's best friend, completely changed Gon, and has shaken up the Hunters organization, any of which could well bring Ging into play in some way. For all that the arc is done, we still haven't seen how it segues into the next. It'll ultimately have just as much to do with the final goal as anything else in the series… possibly more.
& that of the supporting cast (Kurapika X Ryudan, Leorio w/ his Doctor-ship, Hisoka X Churoro) needlessly for too long.
WIthout the hiatuses this would have been a 2 year arc. Lengthy, but not ridiculous. I like Knuckle more than Leorio anyway. Its only the long pauses that exaggerated its length out of proportion.
Heck if we made a panel count I think the king will be the 3rd prominent character after Gon & Killua (& the fact that I personally didn't like him doesn't help me either).
Fine by me, the King was a fascinating character. Kurapika's revenge quest is pretty typical, and Leorio still hasn't offered anything interesting to the table other than being in the series at the start of it. Leorio is a fun enough character, but if he had first appeared at the battle tower, (an early arc neither he nor Kurapika were in) or in York Shin instead of the Hunter Exams, no one would give him a second thought or consider him a main character at all.
Sheer strength means nothing compared to technique and strategies where Nen is concerned. This has been itterated over and over again, especially in this arc. Heck, if they'd stayed invisible and gotten potclean onto him… The king may well remain the strongest fighter in the world, but Togashi did the exact same thing in YuYuHakusho. Right after Toguro, how could there possibly be a stronger enemy? There wasn't, Yuuske started fighting tricky opponents instead.
And then later revealed that not only were there a bunch of demons as strong as Toguro, but that Toguro was only a B class compared to the much much stronger demons lurking around.
All in all, to me calling this arc a total waste is an overstatement. But also calling it a masterpiece is an over exaggeration, considering how long it lasted and swayed away from the rest of the series.
If Togashi hadn't hiatused it'd be fine, we'd have been out of this arc in 2006 and we'd be on nearly chapter 600 by now, and it would only be 1/6 of the series. Laziness is a different fault of the writer, but the storytelling itself isn't.
@RobbyBevard:
No. It's 40% of the series… currently. That's an important distinction. If Togashi ever gets on a real schedule againit won't retain that percentage for long.

Like I said, I had no problem with Skypiea being 34% of the series at the time because it was a typical One Piece adventure, so no need to complain. However if (for example) Marine Ford War arc came that early (around time of Gaya/skypiea arc) in the series and lasted for almost 3 years, "personally" I'd have been pissed b/c that would have been (relatively) too much time to spend away from the main cast.
Dragon Ball was only about the next strong fight, there was no plot (except just defeating the arc enemy) since they collected the dragon balls for the first time, I can't see how anyone can claim it deviated from the plot.
& I don't read Negima so I don't know if it works there or not.
Can't really judge how lengthy or overlong this arc was in the grand scheme of the series… until the series is done.
But we are still entitled to express how we feel towards it at the moment.
While thats an end series goal for him and its a vague motivation to try something, its hardly what he spends every waking moment striving for. Greed Island could have taken him to his father, but that was only relevent for going there, and then the final chapter of the arc, the rest had nothing to do with that. Learning about pottery for a chapter? What did those have to do with finding his father, other than provide extreme situations and grounds for training?
Finding his father was the reason he wanted to defeat the game. it was the sole purpose of the entire arc.
Kurapika's revenge is important b/c Togashi "made him" an important supporting character. Love it or hate it but it's now part of the story (just like how every SH dream is now part of the story).
Getting Killua was a stray from the main plot, but it didn't last for long, so it was hardly annoying. Same could be said about the pottery chapter (whatever that is :p)
I can't remember clearly, but I believe going to the tower was necessary because Gon realized how much weak he was through the hunters exam & how he needed to become stronger so that he'd be worthy of being a pro hunter & therefore find his father. Remember also that in the Tower we knew about nen abilities which easily makes the entire arc worth it. and again the arc was hardly long enough to be a pain for those who didn't like it (if any).
So I guess you agree that (until this happens) anyone can complain about the arc.
And honestly; I seriously doubt that Ging who didn't care about updating his star status or fighting the ants crisis will be anxious to attend the elections.
WIthout the hiatuses this would have been a 2 year arc. Lengthy, but not ridiculous. I like Knuckle more than Leorio anyway. Its only the long pauses that exaggerated its length out of proportion.
If he had the same no. of chapters per year as Oda it would have been 2.9 years, not 2.
Fine by me, the King was a fascinating character. Kurapika's revenge quest is pretty typical, and Leorio still hasn't offered anything interesting to the table other than being in the series at the start of it. I don't even like Leorio, but it wasn't me who made him a main cast from the beginning of the series, it was Togashi. Now, (either we like him or not) we can't deny his fans when they ask for more screen time for him. The same can't be said about the king who I don't think anyone can claim he's a main character for the series as a whole.
Sheer strength means nothing compared to technique and strategies where Nen is concerned.
That's (in part) why I said it's debatable. However I can still claim that sheer strength does matter (all Netero's "nen" tricks didn't help him against the almighty king).
but Togashi did the exact same thing in YuYuHakusho.
& this is precisely the moment the series completely dropped in my eyes. And it was getting just more ridiculous every time a stronger opponent pops up out of no where.
If Togashi hadn't hiatused it'd be fine, we'd have been out of this arc in 2006 and we'd be on nearly chapter 600 by now, and it would only be 1/6 of the series.
& may be the series would have been over at chapter 380, making it 35% of the entire series. And with the way YYH was ended don't till me that Togashi won't do it.
Laziness is a different fault of the writer
Hey; at least we agree on something.
@Bad:
Finding his father was the reason he wanted to defeat the game. it was the sole purpose of the entire arc.
It's what got him there. Its not what then filled the next 50 chapters or the resolution that came from it. In the long run, it, and thus York Shin before it, were 100% pointless in the quest to find his father.
"Getting stronger" has been a regular goal of Gon's in every arc, but "find my dad" and making any actual progress in it only really happened when he got the hunter license. Since then, every arc, including the ants, has been a dead end, and as a result, had no real bearing on that goal.
Exploring the world, having adventures, getting stronger, spending time with his best riend? Yes. Finding his father? No.
The ant arc was 100% about saving and restoring Kaito, is that any less significant?
Kurapika's revenge is important b/c Togashi "made him" an important supporting character. Love it or hate it but it's now part of the story (just like how every SH dream is now part of the story).
Except by then end Kurapika had realized that revenge wasn't everything, that the people he was tracking weren't all part of the group at the time, and that while they had done some bad things, they were also people and cared for one another. He let Hisoka go on a simple "Oh I was never actually part of this group" and he let the leader go due to circumstances. If we never saw him deal with the spiders again, we'd have the full emotional journey of his story. If we were told in narration that "over the next 15 years, one by one, each of the spiders died", that would suffice too.
More of his story can be shown, sure, but at the same time, it had a start, middle and an end. It didn't end with bloody violent death like Kurapika had hoped, but it still reached a conclusion all the same.
Leorio hasn't been in like, 270 chapters out of 318. He's a secondary character, not a lead. He barely had a role in York Shin, and he sat out all the other nen training arcs. Its like saying Yamcha is a main character in Dragonball just because he showed up in the first volume. He might have gotten screen time when the series started, but he's been phased out and made near useless over time. (Tho a wicked nen abilty could turn him around fast.)
That's (in part) why I said it's debatable. However I can still claim that sheer strength does matter (all Netero's "nen" tricks didn't help him against the almighty king).
Wasn't he using almost all physical power though? He wasn't trying to use tricks. He wasn't turning invisible or sending little insects or using gum or mind games of rock paper scissors or trying to deplete his his nen or blocking out his five senses or anything… he was just trying to punch him. With a giant monster statue thing, and incredibly fast, but still just trying to punch him.
And he had the backup plan of the rose bomb all along in any event.
@Bad:
Like I said, I had no problem with Skypiea being 34% of the series at the time because it was a typical One Piece adventure, so no need to complain. I think you contradict yourself a bit here. Skypiea was filled with new characters, and generally it didn't seem to be more than an independent adventure (at least till the middle part of it). Exactly like the Chimera arc. While the Marineford War arc has all the major players in it and affected the overall plot more directly, the way you suggest HxH should do (having Leorio, Kurapika, Hisoka and the Genei Ryodan play a more important role).
I know HxH began with every intention of having Gon, Kullua, Kurapika and Leorio as the quartet of protagonists, but the manga did take another direction, and obviously you don't like it. After the Hunter Examination arc, it was clear what every character's main goal was (except maybe Killua's). What should Togashi did? Tie everyone's goal into the same plot. At the Killua retrieval arc, Kurapika had already left the group for his own goal, while Leorio sticked along with Gon in order to repay him for his help at becoming a Hunter. At the York Shin arc, having everyone together worked exceptionally well.
But at this point, you did know that Leorio wanted to start reading in order to become a doctor, and Kurapika wanted to keep hunting the Ryodan.
I don't think their goals had anything to do with Gon and Killua anymore. And i don't really mind. Gon is the main character, while Kurapika isn't. Unfortunately you have to forget about the quartet that begun in this series and just enjoy it. After all, almost everyone in the Chimera Ant arc has a much more developed character compared because Togashi did a magnificent work at that.
@RobbyBevard:
So did Hisoka. And the Spiders. And Greed Island.
Except for all the ants that are still alive and spreading, including the incredibly charismatic and powerful ones.
From poison the chairman hit him with a dozen chapters ago.
-Killia has promised to leave Gon
-powerups abound, including Gon's current physical state
-Kaito
-chairman's death and impending rpelacement
-corruption of the government
-introduction of the rose bomb
-allies Gon has made
-Favors from Killua's family
-Spiders taking action against the ants
-the ants that survivedSkypeia is the most important arc in One Piece in terms of the overall plot of the entire series to date.
Just because Luffy wasn't fighting Marines doesn't make it irrelevant.
Its called "scope" and "showing the world is bigger than just the main character."
Yes.
A lack of memory is your own fault, not the story's.
Because it was crucial to the cycle growth and development of the entire arc, showing the ants had grown, changed, and that not everything was as horrible and hopeless as it first seemed 100 chapters ago, and that even some of the innocent victims were saved due to the actions of the heroes.
They weren't playing Go.
You're doing a pretty lousy job then. You're hating it quite expertly.
Most people consider Greed Island the weakest arc of the series. The ant saga was full of characterization and great interesting combat. It was only marred by the hiatuses.
We all do.
Oh. Only when its Sasuke? And not when its badly drawn, full of plot holes, retconning, lazy combat, dues ex machinas, abandoning its themes, and ignoring the entire secondary cast, including Hinata's love confession for over 110 chapters?
Oh, you're just in it for the fights. And you think Ulquiorra was a good one. Got it.
Your loss, most of the characters this arc were pretty awesome.
Yes.
You really have missed the entire point of the arc, haven't you. It wasn't about killing the ants. It was about them becoming more man than beast.
Why? They're Kurapika's enemies, not Gon's. This is Gon's adventure, why should he keep getting dragged back into that mess, when even Kurapika is no longer sure if wiping them out is the right thing to do?
Hisoka was introduced to be the ultimate rival, that's like saying Hiei and vegeta were unnecessary for dbz and yuyu hakusho
The Phantom Troupe have been established as one of the main antagonists and have featured in most of the arcs
Greed Island had an entire arc of build up where the characters tried to find out how to get there and then obtain it
none of them came out of nowhere like the queen randomly showing up out the ocean, a little bit of foreshadowing or something wouldn't have hurt.
I dont know who the powerful survivor ants are cause the king and 3 general dudes are all dead and no one came close to their level of power.
Welfin and the lobster dude are hardly interesting characters.
Knuckle is the good character to come out of this arc.
You ignored everything i said about how skypiea could still be an extremely important arc due to Poseidon and its possible connection to the void century.
I don't read HxH to see the scope of the world, i read it for the main cast of which 1/2 half been missing.
Ignoring Hinata's confession has been bugging for me ages and if we got a plot focusing on gaara, neji, lee or shikamaru i'd be very happy but every secondary arc is given to sasuke whom i hate. But his arcs still serve a purpose as he's being built up as hopefuly the primary antagonist and final fight of the series, we get any of the friendship bullshit that turn him good again and well i dunno how to answer that its just ridiculous to think sasuke could possibly be redeemed.
And the flashback to Naruto's birth had to be one of teh dumbest and worst flashbacks I've ever read, so many plot holes created you really get the impression that kishimoto is making this up as he goes.
Am I in a shonen series for the fights, well they are kinda one of the main points of shonen series but I still like other kind of battles. And I like most genre's such as sport or romance or horror. so I'm not in every manga for the fights.
The tactical and mind game battle between the good guys and the phantom troupe and the interesting card abilities garnted on greed island were a great deal more interesting than this arcs super ants that overwhelemed everything with brute strength.
No I never said Ichigo vs Ulquiorra was a good fight i said it was the only part of the arc i liked, the fight itself was disappointing and then ichigo won in a ridiculous fashion but it was still better than anything the other espada or aizen got.
I plan on re-reading the arc once i have all the volumes so hopefully I'll have a better scope of the arc overall and like it more than i did reading it with all the interruptions. But i still stand by the fact that the past 8 chapters could have been covered in about 5 and the 133 chapters was simply too long.
and after reading that someone was just ignoring me i say thank you for at least expressing your opinions and discussing this, because i can now look for the things you saw when i re-read the arc and maybe get a better enjoyment of the arc overall.
Oh, Robby unleashed the beast. I was just ignoring that guy.
As to the anime: Yeah, the animation was great. Hope it stays at this level. I'll be watching for sure.
Yeah pretty much. I was annoyed but I know those idiots are going to pop up every now and then so I decided to move on. Of course I'm glad that Robby got to be the one who thrashed him because few, very few can do a better job than him.
Let me just say that as someone who got to read the Chimera Ants arc in pretty much one go, it is an excellent experience. I have difficulty deciding if Yorknew was the better arc or not. Chock full of excellent moments, this is actually the arc that really got me attached to Gon and Killua more than anything. I always liked them before then but after this arc they really became human.
Bit of a shame all of the other seemingly prominent characters got tossed aside, but I think I've realized now that this isn't the Gon-Killua-Kurapika-Leorio story fighting Hisoka and the Ryodan like one would originally think, it's much more the story of this world Togashi has created that centers around Gon and Killua and features these characters as well as many, many more. And you know what. I've decided that I'm totally fine with that. This world and these various characters Togashi has created are very interesting and the adventures are almost always very exciting and I'd say that's all that really matters.
I'd still say I'd like a Leorio-centric arc though. Even a small one.
Wow loved the music in the new anime.
A great soundtrack.
Watched the anime and really liked it. I don't watch anime anymore, but I might watch this one from time to time.
I didn't like the first one because I thought it was too dark.
When I first read HxH it gave me a dragon ball vibe, not as dark as the anime made it be, so I wasn't thrilled about it. This one seems to have this light-hearted vibe I'm talking about.
@Bad:
Finding his father was the reason he wanted to defeat the game. it was the sole purpose of the entire arc.
The first thing he heard was in fact that the game wouldn't help him find his father and he just had to enjoy the game.
So if his one and only goal was to find his father he would've quited asap, instead his goal became: play the game and enjoy it.
People seem to confuse a goal of a character with overall plot of the story.
It's like me writing a story about a guy who wants to go to the mall. He leaves his house and says: "I want to go to the mall", he's walking to the mall and gets in all sorts of crazy, surrealistic situations and adventures.
Is this story still about the main character going to the mall or about something completely else?
Hunter x Hunter is not about Gon finding his father, this is maybe the most stupid and simplistic plot I've ever heard, but it's about hunters doing their thing in this crazy hunter world they're in.
@RobbyBevard:
It's what got him there. Its not what then filled the next 50 chapters or the resolution that came from it. In the long run, it, and thus York Shin before it, were 100% pointless in the quest to find his father.

Exploring the world, having adventures, getting stronger, spending time with his best riend? Yes. Finding his father? No.
I don't understand your logic here. Luffy wants to be the Pirate King by finding One Piece, so he's traveling from island to island in order to reach his goal. he doesn't "look" for One Piece on every island, he's just walking the path that is laid in front of him. Now how is that any different from Gon & his search for his father? He became a Hunter (like his father), used the hunter card to open the box that was left to him by his father, learned Nen & used it for the same end, started looking for the game for the same goal and played the game to win for the exact aim. Up to the Chimera arc he was literally walkng the path that was laid by his father like Luffy is walking on the path of Roger.
& guess when did he face a "dead end"? yeah, right in the CHIMERA ARC.
The ant arc was 100% about saving and restoring Kaito, is that any less significant?
yes. my proof? he failed and guess what, it doesn't really affect the story.
Except by then end Kurapika had realized that revenge wasn't everything, that the people he was tracking weren't all part of the group at the time, and that while they had done some bad things, they were also people and cared for one another. More of his story can be shown, sure, but at the same time, it had a start, middle and an end. It didn't end with bloody violent death like Kurapika had hoped, but it still reached a conclusion all the same.
You are speaking as if Kurapika abandoned his vengeance!. The way I remember it: he didn't. Leaving Hisoka b/c he was never a Spider only makes sense, and leaving Kuroro in order to save his friends also makes sense. But I remember NOTHING suggests he will stop pursuing them, or that they won't hunt him down (they too have right for vengeance against him). May be you want to deny this and conclude an ending on your own, but I don't want to, I wanna "see" what actually happened. & if he'll kill them one by one off panel then I'll be pissed. Why develop them if you'll kill them off panel?
Leorio hasn't been in like, 270 chapters out of 318. He's a secondary character, not a lead. He barely had a role in York Shin, and he sat out all the other nen training arcs. He might have gotten screen time when the series started, but he's been phased out and made near useless over time. (Tho a wicked nen abilty could turn him around fast.)
Yamacha? really! I don't know about you, but Yamacha seemed like a secondary character 2 chapters after his introduction, while Bulma, Kiririn & Roshi seemed FAR important. On the other hand Leorio was given a depth & focus worthy of an important supporting cast.
& to be honest I find a little bit hypocrisy in picking on Kishi for ignoring the K11 & letting Togashi go for the same.
Also I want to stress that "personally"I don't really care if we ever saw Leorio again. But I DO understand why those who like him complain about it.
Togashi didn't use nen tricks to dispose of the king, he used an atomic bomb. Developed Gon is comparable to the king, Now; Is "developed" Gon the strongest human in history who won't lose for anything but a bomb or there is stronger fighters out there (tricks or not) but for some vague reason they weren't hired? Both answers suck.
And he had the backup plan of the rose bomb all along in any event.
Yes, they didn't use a Nen user "with tricks", they used a bomb. Your point?
I think you contradict yourself a bit here. Skypiea was filled with new characters, and generally it didn't seem to be more than an independent adventure (at least till the middle part of it). Exactly like the Chimera arc. While the Marineford War arc has all the major players in it and affected the overall plot more directly, the way you suggest HxH should do (having Leorio, Kurapika, Hisoka and the Genei Ryodan play a more important role).
Can you first tell me: WHAT IS THE PLOT OF ONE PIECE? I always thought it was finding One Piece not saving Ace. & guess why they went to Skypiea?
And the progress of the plot is in no way related to the number of characters present in an arc.
So your answer for this is to completely remove them from the story for 3 years of material & even longer considering hiatuses without a single mention? Well, if it works for you then have a blast. But don't blame the people who are missing them.
The first thing he heard was in fact that the game wouldn't help him find his father and he just had to enjoy the game.
So if his one and only goal was to find his father he would've quited asap, instead his goal became: play the game and enjoy it.
I don't really remember that, but regardless; It's not like him leaving would have brought him closer to his end goal. & by the end of the arc it was utilized in a way that made him winning the game actually worth the trouble.
But for example: if this guy heard that the mall was closed he'll have to go back home, right?
& if he ended up in a diner we'll start asking: Then what about the mall?
My point is his actions has to have motive. You are enjoying the story for the adventure itself & the world which is great. But for me I like to feel that the characters are on track "most" of time.
I care about Luffy finding One Piece and that's why his adventure is exciting for me. If he'll just go for endless adventures, I'll be less interested.
I was kinda worried about the anime, but so far it's pretty nice, i enjoyed the entire episode.
And is it me or some voices are still the same ?
The plot of the manga has never been for Gon to just find his Dad. The plot has been for Gon to find his Dad and show him that he's become a good hunter. It's about Gon accepting challenges to improve himself both physically and mentally. In actuality, every arc has started thus far (except the Killua rescue arc/Tower arc) as a result of Gon searching for his Dad, but he does it in a very independent way, which is why if Gon did find his dad on Greed Island or using the card, he'd be satisfied. That's the reason why every time someone offers him a cheap and easy way to see his Dad, he vehemently refuses. Gon doesn't want to just go rush and find his Dad; the only way for that to ever occur is for there to be a bunch of side adventures that allow him to explore and train. The only reason why this arc may seem like it strayed a bit is because Gon got so emotionally wrapped up in this debacle when Kaito died. It started off as Gon, Kaito and Killua collecting bugs and later travelling to go investigate the Chimera Ant situation. From the beginning, Gon showed little intention to stay with Kaito for the eon that this arc lasted.
well… dumb arguments aside...
Only two more chapters until there might be a new hiatus. I'm usually braced for one by now, but what with the advent of the new anime, I'm feeling optimistic. And even if Togashi does decide to take another break, at least the Chimera Ant arc is over. It really sucked ass having to endure an excessive hiatus when the arc was like ~10 chapters away from its conclusion.
Also, I hope Viz releases Volume 28 and 29 sooner rather than later. We got Volume 27 1.5 years after its Japanese release, which was pretty lame.
The anime was cool :D
@Bad:
I mean, Luffy's dream took a detour when he went to go save Ace. That had nothing to do with becoming Pirate King–he wanted to save his brother. Gon is the same way--Kite was the person who first gave him a life goal, and told him that his father was alive. Kite saved Gon. So this arc had Gon trying to save Kite just like Luffy saving Ace.
@Bad:
yes. my proof? he failed and guess what, it doesn't really affect the story.
This arc saw Gon killing for the first time, remorselessly. After all that foreshadowing Togashi's done about the flaws in Gon's personality, it finally came to fruition in this arc. You should ask of yourself, "How will this affect Gon?" He failed in saving his friend, and probably lost Killua in the process. He's had his arm broken and even destroyed on multiple occasions and it's always been fixed, but he may have permanently hurt himself. Even though he killed Pitou, is brute strength the answer? Also, how can Gon face his dad when he thinks that it's his fault that Kite was killed?
@Bad:
The Phantom Troupe is waiting for Chrollo to be exorcised before they hunt down Kurapika. This arc, they decided on an interim leader (Feitan). Some of the Troupe could die off panel–I wouldn't put it past Togashi. It happened to Pouf and Youpi too.
Also, Kurapika stated after the events in Yorknew that the eyes of his brethren come first. Revenge is secondary to reclaiming those.
@Bad:
Yamacha?
Leorio's in Med School. He hasn't had a purpose in the story for a while because of that. Once they need his talents again, he'll come back. Plain and simple.
@Bad:
The Mini Rose is supposed to be political commentary. Even the strongest being in creation is no match for its inhumanity. This arc focused on what it meant to be human, and the danger in choosing violence over compassion. Gyro was introduced because he encompasses what the King abandoned. He'll probably be the central villain.
@Bad:
Can you first tell me: WHAT IS THE PLOT OF ONE PIECE? I always thought it was finding One Piece not saving Ace. & guess why they went to Skypiea?
And the progress of the plot is in no way related to the number of characters present in an arc.
To answer your first question, while finding the One Piece is important, the overarching plot is Luffy becoming the Pirate King.
@Bad:
So your answer for this is to completely remove them from the story for 3 years of material & even longer considering hiatuses without a single mention? Well, if it works for you then have a blast. But don't blame the people who are missing them.
The Chimera Ant arc literally took place over the course of a few months. Leorio is in med school and Kurapika's looking for his clan's eyes. They have their own goals that don't intersect with Gon or Killua's. I don't ever recall Kurapika or Leorio choosing to go with Gon to find his dad.
@Bad:
I don't really remember that, but regardless; It's not like him leaving would have brought him closer to his end goal. & by the end of the arc it was utilized in a way that made him winning the game actually worth the trouble.
Even if you don't remember it, it actually happened.
Volume 13 - Ging: "Welcome, Gon. This is the game I made with my friends. Well, go ahead and enjoy. If you thought there'd be a clue to help you find me…too bad. I just wanted to show off our game. Anyway, now you're stuck here until you can get the item that'll let you out. Go play your heart out."
@Bad:
Luffy wants to become the pirate king. But Ace is also important to him. So he spends the arc trying to go and save Ace.
Gon is trying to find his dad. But Kite is also important to him. So he spends the arc trying to go and save Kite.
Hisoka was introduced to be the ultimate rival, that's like saying Hiei and vegeta were unnecessary for dbz and yuyu hakusho
[hide]
They were actually. DBZ would overall have gone much smoother without Vegeta there to obnopxiously HELP the villains become stronger. Both the Cell and Buu arcs would have been over much quicker without him, and Goku was leagues beyond Vegeta during the Namek arc anyway, he was hardly a rival then.. tho he was good for stalling for time.
And Hiei… again, Yuuske so far outstripped him eventually that he didn't really contribute much.
The Phantom Troupe have been established as one of the main antagonists and have featured in most of the arcsGreed Island had an entire arc of build up where the characters tried to find out how to get there and then obtain it none of them came out of nowhere like the queen randomly showing up out the ocean, a little bit of foreshadowing or something wouldn't have hurt.
Hisoka and the bomber came out of nowhere too. Thats what new characters and plot situations DO.
I dont know who the powerful survivor ants are cause the king and 3 general dudes are all dead and no one came close to their level of power.
Jairo has been mentioned a LOT, he's going to be important later, possibly as a much bigger more important villain than anything else going on. As might be the king's little brother.
You ignored everything i said about how skypiea could still be an extremely important arc due to Poseidon and its possible connection to the void century.
Actually, my exact words were "Skypeia is the most important arc in One Piece in terms of the overall plot of the entire series to date."
I don't read HxH to see the scope of the world, i read it for the main cast of which 1/2 half been missing.
Then they aren't really the main cast, are they?
Ignoring Hinata's confession has been bugging for me ages and if we got a plot focusing on gaara, neji, lee or shikamaru i'd be very happy but every secondary arc is given to sasuke whom i hate. But his arcs still serve a purpose as he's being built up as hopefuly the primary antagonist and final fight of the series, we get any of the friendship bullshit that turn him good again and well i dunno how to answer that its just ridiculous to think sasuke could possibly be redeemed.
Brace yourself. He's absolutely going to be redeemed and forgiven for all his crimes. There is no other possible outcome, Kishimoto can't possibly go for the actual "tragic" ending. Togashi could, but Kishimoto can't.
Am I in a shonen series for the fights, well they are kinda one of the main points of shonen series
No they aren't. They're a big part of the draw, but if fighting was all that mattered One Piece wouldn't be the king by a mile in sales.
but I still like other kind of battles.
Yes, the main generals had crazy strength, but most of the smaller ants were trick based. And the King ws CONSTANTLY beaten by Komugi and by… strategy.
No I never said Ichigo vs Ulquiorra was a good fight i said it was the only part of the arc i liked, the fight itself was disappointing and then ichigo won in a ridiculous fashion but it was still better than anything the other espada or aizen got.
If it was a bad fight in a bad arc, why did you like it? You thought it was a highlight, so…?
I plan on re-reading the arc once i have all the volumes so hopefully I'll have a better scope of the arc overall and like it more than i did reading it with all the interruptions. But i still stand by the fact that the past 8 chapters could have been covered in about 5 and the 133 chapters was simply too long.
Well, that's a fair stance.
and after reading that someone was just ignoring me i say thank you for at least expressing your opinions and discussing this, because i can now look for the things you saw when i re-read the arc and maybe get a better enjoyment of the arc overall.
Everyone deserves the courtesy of debate at least once.[/hide]
@Bad:
Why develop them if you'll kill them off panel?
I was going to respond to all your points too, but Mr. Toto and Buchephalus kinda hit them first with what I was going to say.
As far as surprise killings off panel? Not like Togashi's never done that before… He's all about twisting expectations.
Yamacha? really! I don't know about you, but Yamacha seemed like a secondary character 2 chapters after his introduction, while Bulma, Kiririn & Roshi seemed FAR important. On the other hand Leorio was given a depth & focus worthy of an important supporting cast.
Okay. In that case, Master Roshi. Just because he was important for the first five volumes, doesn't mean he was a main character. He was phased out to secondary status by the time of Red Ribbon, got his last hurrah on Picollo Sr., and completely background filler by Vegeta.
& to be honest I find a little bit hypocrisy in picking on Kishi for ignoring the K11 & letting Togashi go for the same.
Different story structures. [hide] Naruto is surrounded by his friends and allies and every arc they all go into battle, and are then ignored and get to provide absolutely nothing while Naruto solos the villains, while they stand around watching. Or become shells of their former selves susceptible to first year traps and tricks. (Dur, Sakura, whats that smoke bomb you have in your hand? Surely not the same smoke bomb you tried using on us two chapters ago?)
Gon goes around the world on adventures and meets new friends constantly, while Leorio and Kurapika have clearly defined other goals they're working on, and we don't have much reason yet to doubt Togashi will get back to them, eventually. While Naruto has ignored its secondaries for hundreds of chapters, even with them right there by Naruto's side.
If Leorio and Kurapika had come along to Greed Island, and then to the Chimera ants, and then just sat back in lawn chairs and gone "Nah, this is too much for us, we'll let you guys handle it", then they'd absolutely have the same problem. As it is Togashi managed to drag Biscuit and the Spiders back into this arc, and there wasn't any real reason for either to be around.[/hide]
Can you first tell me: WHAT IS THE PLOT OF ONE PIECE?
To avenge the space aliens that were massacred by the corrupt World Government during the void century by toppling it and to ultimately make the world a better place.
I always thought it was finding One Piece
Unfortunately, its going to take 10 or 15 years to get there so there's no way for me to definitively prove this at moment, but finding One Piece is not going to be the end of the series. It hasn't been for a LONG time. It will launch the final arc, but it won't by any means be the end or final goal, even if the characters think it is right now. There's a much, much bigger story at this point than just finding a room of gold coins.
i don't like the ant arc either. it had epic moments (early invasion) but as a whole i rather than it had not happened. =/
Hisoka was introduced to be the ultimate rival, that's like saying Hiei and vegeta were unnecessary for dbz and yuyu hakusho
The Phantom Troupe have been established as one of the main antagonists and have featured in most of the arcs
/QUOTE]Hisoka isn't similar at all to vegeta and Hiei. Hisoka isn't exactly a rival, which would imply far more equality. He's had some rivalish characteristics, but also characteristics of a straight up villain, a mentor, and just that guy who isn't on anyone's side. Not to mention vegeta and Hiei weren't really neccesary in there series, especially Hiei who was always somewhat bland and didn't ever do much beyond fight. Hiei wasn't even really a rival. He was a villain who became an antihero, but not really a rival. Also, the phantom troupe are important characters, but I wouldn't really call them main antagonists, especially since the only reason Gon even cares about them is Kurapica. I'm sure they'll be important in the future, but even then they might not be big villains at that pointGreed Island had an entire arc of build up where the characters tried to find out how to get there and then obtain it. none of them came out of nowhere like the queen randomly showing up out the ocean, a little bit of foreshadowing or something wouldn't have hurt.
The queen randomly showed up in the ocean, but one could argue that was the foreshadowing as the arc didn't start just then, plus we might get more details on how this started later
I dont know who the powerful survivor ants are cause the king and 3 general dudes are all dead and no one came close to their level of power.
Welfin and the lobster dude are hardly interesting characters.
Knuckle is the good character to come out of this arc.The king of NGL became an ant has been foreshadowed to be very powerful. Plus, just because they aren't ungodly doesn't mean they aren't strong. Welfin and Lobster are probably never going to be important again. But Ant brother, Ant Kaito, and Jairo (the king of NGL) will. Also Morau, Shoot, and Palm were also good new characters beyond just knuckles
You ignored everything i said about how skypiea could still be an extremely important arc due to Poseidon and its possible connection to the void century.
Poseidon is far, far from the only important part of that arc, and important things taken from that arc have already been observed beyond just theories.
I don't read HxH to see the scope of the world, i read it for the main cast of which 1/2 half been missing.
Fair enough, except Leorio was never really a main character anyways as has been pointed out
Am I in a shonen series for the fights, well they are kinda one of the main points of shonen series but I still like other kind of battles. And I like most genre's such as sport or romance or horror. so I'm not in every manga for the fights.
The tactical and mind game battle between the good guys and the phantom troupe and the interesting card abilities garnted on greed island were a great deal more interesting than this arcs super ants that overwhelemed everything with brute strength.THere were plenty of great fights this arc, and they were almost all really tactical. The only "super ants" in this arc were the royal guard and the king, and aside from pitou's defeat which was mostly strength, and the king who was stated to be an absolute monster (and even then, they defeated the king with a trick because Netero caught him a trap that made it so the king would definitely die regardless of if he died as well), both the other royal guard members were almost beaten (Knuckle would have won if it had taken him just a few more seconds before he gave up, since Potclean would have gathered enough interest and activated leaving yupi defenseless, and Morau would have beaten pufu if he wasn't tricked into stopping his smoke prison
I see Welfin being somewhat important again. After all he is friends with Jairo and is currently looking for him.
@RobbyBevard:
To avenge the space aliens that were massacred by the corrupt World Government during the void century by toppling it and to ultimately make the world a better place.
loved that you outright said it lol , he'll have no idea what your talking about though, hell I missed so many of the hints (almost all of them)
Overall obtaining difficulty for "Greed Island" was G (easy).
Just watched the first episode of the new anime. It's pretty good, got some nice animation, especially the ship part was done well. I liked these moments, that didn't seem that interesting in the manga, but got fleshed out, like how gon actually catched the lord of the lake.
Only beef I really got is with leaving out the bear fox part with Kaito, but I guess that is bound to be shown at some point later (also, not showing the moment where Mito confessed that she took Gon from Gin).
The arc is officially and it seems like the next arc is going to be about the election for the new president… I wonder if it's just going to be a vote or if its going to be some sort of battle or test like the hunter exam
@RobbyBevard:
I was going to respond to all your points too, but Mr. Toto and Buchephalus kinda hit them first with what I was going to say.
Seriously!!! But their posts added nothing new to the argument, they even agreed with me on more than one occasion. I'm sure you can do leaps better.
What the heck… OK, I'll address them first, but I don't want anyone bitching about how long my post is. If you don't want to read the post then don't open the spoiler tag.
! @Bucephalus:
! > The plot of the manga has never been for Gon to just find his Dad. The plot has been for Gon to find his Dad and show him that he's become a good hunter.
! WOW, what a great revelation. Thank you for your meaningful post.

It started off as Gon, Kaito and Killua collecting bugs and later travelling to go investigate the Chimera Ant situation. Gon is the same way--Kite was the person who first gave him a life goal, and told him that his father was alive. Kite saved Gon. So this arc had Gon trying to save Kite just like Luffy saving Ace.
! So you agree with me then, good for you. But you have to add that the difference between The Marine Ford & THe Chimera is that Oda used his arc to portray characters who he had created through the entire series, while Togashi made a bunch of new ones whom we knew nothing about at first. oh & Oda didn't spend 40% of his series in the war.
! If you think that I'm saying "the chimera arc has no impact on the whole story" then you don't even know what we are discussing here.
! > Even though he killed Pitou, is brute strength the answer? Also, how can Gon face his dad when he thinks that it's his fault that Kite was killed?
! You make me laugh.
! > The Phantom Troupe is waiting for Chrollo to be exorcised before they hunt down Kurapika. This arc, they decided on an interim leader (Feitan). ! So you agree with me that Robby was wrong when he said that the whole dispute between Kurapika & the Ryodan is solved, and that we may just hear about it in narration 15 years later? Well, thank you… I guess.
! > Leorio's in Med School. He hasn't had a purpose in the story for a while because of that. Once they need his talents again, he'll come back. Plain and simple.
! Like hell I care if he'll come back or not. All what I'm saying is that if someone is disappointed that he didn't show up for the past X years, you don't get to tell them to shut up. They CAN complain about it if they will.
! > The Mini Rose is supposed to be political commentary. Even the strongest being in creation is no match for its inhumanity. This arc focused on what it meant to be human, and the danger in choosing violence over compassion. Gyro was introduced because he encompasses what the King abandoned. ! How in hell is this a reply to my post or anything we are discussing?
! > To answer your first question, while finding the One Piece is important, the overarching plot is Luffy becoming the Pirate King.

! You seriously keep missing the point. All this argument started b/c I said that this arc was too long for what it had to offer away from the main cast and over all plot. we keep going in circles and at the end you come to till me that Kura & Leo had no place in this arc!. Thank you for stating the obvious, but that doesn't mean that the arc wasn't damn long.
! > Even if you don't remember it, it actually happened.Volume 13 - Ging: "Welcome, Gon. This is the game I made with my friends. Well, go ahead and enjoy. If you thought there'd be a clue to help you find me…too bad. I just wanted to show off our game. Anyway, now you're stuck here until you can get the item that'll let you out. Go play your heart out."
! So Gon stayed & enjoyed the game b/c his father asked him to!. Thanks for proving my point.
! > Luffy wants to become the pirate king. But Ace is also important to him. So he spends the arc trying to go and save Ace.Gon is trying to find his dad. But Kite is also important to him. So he spends the arc trying to go and save Kite.
! Again, your point?
! Now back the serious stuff:
! @RobbyBevard:
! > As far as surprise killings off panel? Not like Togashi's never done that before… He's all about twisting expectations.
! That doesn't make killing developed characters off panel any less annoying.
! > Okay. In that case, Master Roshi. Just because he was important for the first five volumes, doesn't mean he was a main character. He was phased out to secondary status by the time of Red Ribbon, got his last hurrah on Picollo Sr., and completely background filler by Vegeta.
! The moment Master Roshi acknowledged that he was surpassed by Ten… & withdrew without a fight his rule as the master/trainer in the series was fulfilled. foddering him afterwards wasn't really an issue.
! > Different story structures. [hide] Naruto is surrounded by his friends and allies and every arc they all go into battle, and are then ignored and get to provide absolutely nothing while Naruto solos the villains, while they stand around watching. ! The series is still about Naruto not the K11, Naruto fans can even go as far as explaining who was where at any point and how it only made sense to focus on Naruto. Main point will remain that they both abandoned their supporting cast "FOR YEARS" with the hope of coming back to them at some point. The only question is when do you think the fans have the right to start complaining about it. You say 6 years & I say 2.
! And yes, you are right, the case IS much worth in Naruto.
! > To avenge the space aliens that were massacred by the corrupt World Government during the void century by toppling it and to ultimately make the world a better place.
! I read your theory once before, and either it was right or wrong, this is not the driving force behind Luffy's adventures at the moment, that may change at some point though.
! > Unfortunately, its going to take 10 or 15 years to get there so there's no way for me to definitively prove this at moment, but finding One Piece is not going to be the end of the series. ! This is un-debatable. The war WILL happen, but implying it has any relation to why Luffy is on his adventure is just silly.
! And to be honest; I feel insulted by you saying that you "need" to prove this point to me, while WB flat out said it. If you think I'm that dump or just trolling with you then this discussion is over.
Anyone Noticed the Chimera Ant's hunters in the anime ?

I spy the outlines of Knuckle, Moreau, and Bisquit.
Who's that between Netero and Bisquit? I recognize everyone else.

Lippo, the 3rd exam judge. And yay guys, i didn't even notice Morau and Knuckle! I hope that means we're having Chimera Ant arc animated for sure.
No, Satotsu is between Bisquit and Moreau.
I found who it was. It's Lippo [http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Lippo
H](http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Lippo)e looks kinda different in the manga, that's why I didn't recognize him. I thought he was smaller.
Edit: Ninja'd. Thanks anyway.:happy:
Did anyone notice the freaking Stone Mask from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in gold during the time the narrator was talking of Jewelry?
Yeah, there's even the red stone of asia in it.
Good first episode. Now I can enjoy the series all over again. Which is good since I forgot a lot of it.
Yeah, what was the JoJo mask doing there? Is there any connection with the animation studio or something?
A particularly perceptive poster at NF (michiru3050) has offered up a pretty good explanation for the black pages. I'm going to just directly quote what she says.
@michiru3050:
I guess the black pages have four meanings.
1. A drawing technique to emphasise the last scene.
2. The dying king has lost even his sight.
3. His mother named him Meruemu as "Light shining on everything". It's stated that "His en shined into the palace as if it's sunshine" and "He manipulated light particles to search Palm in a house" a while ago. He got a god-like light power at that moment. But black pages suggests that he doesn't have any light now.
4. This is a view that Komugi was seeing from the beginning. She couldn't see any light. To her, he was just Meruem.After all, those pages show us that he lost everything but gained what he trully wanted.
He didn't need any soldiers, palaces, countries, power, strength, even his sight(as Komugi). He just wanted to play Gungi with Komugi.This is the same to her too. She had nothing besides Gungi. Nobody loved her and couldn't play Gungi as well as she did. She was lonely Gungi King(Queen?). But she gained Meruem.
That's why she cryed when he counterattacked her new kokoriko. She once needed to create and kill tactics on Gungi by herself. But she gained the perfect opponent and can create tactics with him(I guess to create tactics suggests to create a baby as she said kokoriko is her baby.)The one "Light shines on everything" loved (and was loved by) was a blind girl. What a story!
They started a new(the last) game in darkness.
"1-5-1 king".
"9-5-1 king".
Then it was stopped. These two king pieces don't go anywhere anymore. Two kings (King of living things and Gungi King) are together forever.
I had completely forgotten the meaning of Meryem's name. Also, the move "Kokoriko" is tied directly to Meryem's existential crisis too.
Thx Mr. Toto, now I understand a little bit better why I liked those pages. :)
btw: its time to rejoice for everyone - it seems pretty clear that HxH wont end with the ant arc. :)
Eh I'm still going with the whole "Togashi was just lazy" theory. I mean, there are better ways to show that the King is losing/lost his sight than multiple black pages.
I miss Killuas skateboard. I bet he could do some pretty cool Nen moves with it.
So, if you guys didn't hear, Jump comes out a day earlier than usual this week.
I'm translating it now. Interesting stuff.
! Ging is indeed one of the 12 guys. His symbol is the boar.
Ging announces his candidacy for President.
