! Lucky him. And another 1800.
I'm gonna try to go to one in Albuquerque next month.
I just finished the Feast last night while away, and came back to the Dance on my kitchen table.
Woo…!
Finally finished last night, after taking my time with the book and moving through it at a nice snail's pace.
! Pacing-wise this book was LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than Feast. Though there were certainly some chapters that dragged and Martin still can't resist lavishly describing food, it was a much better and more engaging read, and I loved it - cliffhangers and all. I'm glad we got some answers from the last book. I came to like Theon a little more, which surprised me, and Davos lived, which elates me; but Jon Snow and Dany…! Guys were fucking up! And you saw it coming from miles and miles away. I'm with you dpara on their chapters being slightly boring / reactive though: such are the shackles of command, one supposes.
! In all though, I'm happy to see the changes this book brought; and eager to see what the Winds of Winter bring.
La la la la la, ignoring all spoilers~
Just finished reading Joff's wedding in SOS o.0 Didn't see that coming. Funny, this must be how it feels to be truely surprised with no spoilers! continues to ignore most of the above posts
Safe:
!
I just read that. I think they mean that they'll have to cut/rearrange/alter to fit it all in one season or add/change/alter to stretch it out into two seasons.
Or something.
Also, found a random nugget of interest:
! > Mr. Weiss and Mr. Benioff were quizzed about the parents of Jon Snow, a “Game of Thrones” character of mysterious lineage. (“We had a whole conversation about it,” Mr. Benioff said, “and George was pleased that we got the answer right.”)
! I was just watching episode 2 of the first season last night, and wondered whether or not the producers knew Jon's true lineage or not, especially after a couple of things I noticed. (Eddard looked on the verge of tears when telling Jon he'll talk of his lineage when next they meet, and Eddard telling Robert that he'd never meet Wylla or something.) This only makes me more convinced of the R+L theory…
I was waiting for the paper back to come out, but I broke down while I was at Borders today scoping out their liquidation sales. No good sales yet, but I bought ADWD anyway because I've already ran into some minor spoilers here on the net. It's unavoidable. I might as well read now before something big gets spoiled for me.
Gotta be careful with this series.
The fandom will spoil with RECKLESS ABANDON and not even think about it. Until I finished this one I stayed away from pretty much everywhere.
I'm about 1/3 through ADWD (been very good so far, still waiting for it to get great though) and I can't help but keep noticing something. It started in AFoC and has continued into this book were the chapter titles for none "main" characters are never the persons real name and are prone to change on a chapter by chapter basis. Has this been going on since before AFoC and I've missed it or is it new? If so why the change? I get labeling a character a "nickname" works if it's a twist at the end about who it actually is or if its just a one chapter person but why keep using different titles and changing them if it's an established multi-chapter character? I mean I guess it's cool but I remember getting incredibly confused with those title changes during the iron-born stuff in AFoC….

It started in AFFC, and I had just assumed it was a method for establishing one-off PoVs, but it seems they're all here to stay, seeing how most of the unnamed have more chapters than some of the named characters. :\
i chuckled mightily
! Why, I'd have a slice of that pie.
! Yes, indeed~
Ah fuck it, I couldn't wait any longer for the next season(s) and bought A Clash Of Kings, A Storm Of Swords and A Feast For Crows.
I'm only 8 pages away from finishing…but I've been staying up for more than 24 hours to try and reset my sleep schedule.
These pages are going by slow. @_@
I'm at 350 pages, turning in for the night. A little disappointed with some things glares at Tyrion, but the chapter I just read was particularly good.
I finished.
Yay.
I'm also too tired to give my opinion right now.
Boo.
I'll just leave with this:
! Are people implying Manderly's a cannibal? I didn't catch anything like that in the book.
That said, Manderly>>>>>Catelyn Stark. Seriously, Thoros had good intentions and still his Red God made things worse. It's still sad what happened to Vicatarion. He wasn't perfect, but at least he wasn't insane.
Oh, and now I know why we didn't see Varys in book 4. He was hiding.
Jon….man, poor guy.
Dragons should burn Harpies straight away because they can smell weakness.
EDIT: Reads online stuff about Manderly
! Oooooooooh, I get it now.
I thought he was awesome before, but now….
Go get 'em!
sigh I'm getting closer. Just finished my copy of Storm Of Swords. Now to go into town and get FFC~
almost done, like 200 pages left. ha funny saying almost with that many
would have been done like a week ago but i seem to find that sometimes i get to a new chapter and like "DAMN, i don't feel like readinga bout them" these last two books have had way too many characters i don't like reading about. the chapters usually end up being decent, but when i reach them there just is no motivation to start them
Hey, Google Books is doing a Live broadcast of an interview with George R.R. Martin. He'll be answering fan questions here, so check it out!
For those like me who don't have sound to hear the interview Silence mentions, here is a link to the notes & manuscript.
Oh yeah, scroll down to near the bottom and then read up :3 It's a little confusing, but it's like a blog I guess.
EDIT: This is totally relevent since I found it on the above website :ninja:
!
HE mentions that there is a few POV's he needs to kill cause he has too many. hopefully that means he starts kiling the ones we DON"T like to read about and not the ones we love.
he has gotten his big drama effect from teh red wedding and eddards death, he showed he can kill big important people. now it feels like when he does it to others that he is doing it NOT for story reasons, but just for shock and awe, adn that is not good story writing

Yes, but having too many stories to constantly tie in and link back to can also be bad story writing. If the reader doesn't get enough of their favourite character then the books become tedious and dull. Aswell as this, Martin probably has other reasons for killing his charcaters, later in the interview he says there was a reason for each main charcater's death. I hardly think he'll kill them just for a short-lived reaction from his readers. He's got enough of that as it is.
Also, just started reading FFC, was shocked but happy to find out that I'm now a minor character in the prologue XD Shame I'll probably never see myself again carries on reading
There's some rumours floating around that Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond on Lost) is being approached to play Mance Rayder in season 2. I haven't read the second book yet, so I don't know the character, but Cusick is a fantastic actor and I hope he'll show up in this equally fantastic show.

i think it would be a good cast.
fyi mance rayder is a wildling, and he looks the part imo
It would be great if he joins the cast. I know that some fans were originally pushing to have him cast in the role of Davos, but the role has since been filled (by Liam Cunningham) and truthfully, I think Mance would be a better fit for Cusick, anyway. He has the rugged looks and charisma to pull off Mance's character.

All that grinding for nothing! It sounds good on paper, but this Game (of Thrones) kills off more characters than FFIV.
@Cuddles:
I
! It's still sad what happened to Vicatarion. He wasn't perfect, but at least he wasn't insane.
.
Aren't you mixing with someone else ? Because I don't recall anything bad happening to him @_@. (it's quite the opposite actually).
Oh and the friendship is coming thing is great XD.
@Monkey:

! Victarion started off as a kind of asshole brought about by Iron Islands culture but still had principles and honor. Now he's just an insane, religious zealot pretty much blasting away any good character traits he had and just turned him into another version of his religious brother.
Finally finished ADWD, paced myself this time around. Was a step up from AFOC but it suffered from the same weakness for the first quarter of the book. While my favorite PoVs were back, characters were still missing and it didn't feel like a complete book. But once timelines synced the book picked up great and ended fantastic as always.
Some quick thoughts:
! Funny how Jon, IMO, took a huge step foward in leadership (cost him though) while Dany took a big leap back. Usually one of my favorite characters she made and continues to make a ton of stupid decisions and I found her chapters surprisingly one of the harder ones to get through as she is usually the one I look foward to the most.
! Glad to see Davos back as short lived as that was and really enjoyed the "cameos" of Jaimie and Cersie in this book as they were the only ones who got me through the last one.
! Like the direction Theon went though I still find him hard to be viewed as sympathetic a character as he is being portrayed. Not enough Bran, as he was abscent from the last book and basically the majority of this one as well.
! Liking the new twist of a second Targeryen coming from no were to stir things up, a satisfying answer to the questions Ive had about Varys plans since the first book.
! Tyrion was awesome as usuall and while Arya's chapters kept throwing me completely out of the main story (it's like she's in a different world) but I liked her chapters all the same.
! I've always thought that their were 5 characters "safe" (at least until the end of the last book) in this series: Dany, Bran, and Jon have too much invested in their stories and are too important to die and I think Tyrion and Arya are too…"popular"..to die. I stand by the statement but it was quite a way to leave Jon's story at the end of the book.
All in all it was a great addition to a great book and I hope to god we don't have to wait another 5 years to get the next one.
i just finished with a feast for crows. I do have a question about dance with dragons. Does it just sync timeline with the other characters from feast of crows or does it also expand pass the end timeline of feast of crows?
I havent read dance with dragons yet, so keep the answer spoiler free if u can . lol
The dance expands pass the end timelime of FFC.
And I disagree Cuddle ^^;;.
! I find victarion more interesting here. And for now, he's on a winning vibe. Also he's not really a zealot, it's just that he maximize his chances of victory by taking the chances wherever they are. (and making sacrifices for two different gods isn't what I call zealot)

! Making sacrifices for ANY god is pretty much zealotry. Not only that, but he justified burning little girls as an offering because they'd be happier that way while killing innocent boys because they were 'unnatural' was completely assholish because it wasn't even their fault. The guys' nuts!

It goes beyond the Feast, but to compensate, several characters from the Feast reappear in the Dance for a chapter or two (or in one case three)

! He didn't say the girls would be happier, he said what he was doing to them was a great honor. I think you're applying too many modern standards to his actions but i also think you're right in a way. I don't think he's a religious zealot, he's just a very god fearing type of person. I mean you have a man who turns your arm into a smoking hunk of awesome and can predict where and when ships will show up. He's also promising you great victory with the capture/favor of the Queen of Dragons. This is after having his fleet worn down, being lost halfway across the world, trying to get a position that his wife bedding brother undeservedly has, all while having a dying arm. Victarion has always been a very serious man in everything he does. He's almost like Stannis in that regard. I just think now the way things have been going for him he feels like the Gods, both red and drowned, are aligning to grant him some great favor. He believes in himself now more than anything but still takes religion seriously. It's like how Davos thinks his fingers were his luck even though he didn't seem any luckier when he had them versus when he didn't, he still believed they brought him luck so he kept them around. Knock on wood. But really they were more a confidence booster than anything. Victarion is knocking on wood by sacrificing those girls and for a man who has probably killed hundreds of men, burned tens of ships and sailors alive, this act probably doesn't phase him in the slightest.
! So I finished the book a couple days ago and thinking back on the last chapter there's something I guess I've missed? So Dany is stranded in the middle of the plains and for the majority of the chapter I just assumed that she was either abondanded by Drogon or was too afraid to ride him. But at the end she was able to call and ride him pretty easily. If she was able to do this then 1) why can't she just fly back to Meeren 2) Even if she didnt know the way it couldn't hurt to fly around and try to find it or some civillization 3) If she wanted to avoid civilization because she was afraid of how out of control Drogon might get then why can't she at least use him to fly around and hunt for her food or at least find a better water source? Am I missing something?

! Yeah, except he's gone bonkers compared to how he previously was. This was the man who cried while he beat his own wife to death due to customs and it was obvious that even though he was extremely prejudiced he always at least some empathy or mercy to his enemies, as shown by his disgust at that party where he saw that lord's family humiliated. Now he's killing effeminate boys for being 'unnatural' despite it being no fault as his own, killing sailors who would dare 'lie about Dany being dead' even though they could've been mistaken and that burning the girls thing still seemed completely cruel and not something he would do before. He's like Melisandre except in this case he has a penis and two gods to worship. He's nuts, and I'd personally want to know what Maqorro did to him behind those doors to make him so batshit insane.
UGH I wanna talk about the book so bad… but I refuse to rush. I just got to the first chapter that has Victorian as POV character again. I immediately was like "time for a break."
It's good so far, though. REALLY good. I'm about half way through I believe and while I don't think it'll end up being my favorite of the 5 so far, it's better than Feast. But similiarlyy to Feast, I feel as though GRRM rambles a little too much - investing too much time in characters that really don't need it. For people who just want as much content as possible it's great. I find it taxing. Sometimes I realize by the end of a chapter the character hasn't basically moved the entire time. They're just thinking to themselves.
! So I finished the book a couple days ago and thinking back on the last chapter there's something I guess I've missed? ! Well, that's just it–Dany can't control Drogon reliably. It seems he obeys only when he wants to ("Neither words nor whips could turn Drogon if he did not wish to be turned"), or when he feels sufficiently threatened (as when Dany screamed and lashed him in the pits). After they had landed in the Dothraki sea, every time Dany flew out with Drogon on one of his hunts he would sometimes obey her directional commands, sometimes not, but in the end he always returned to the den he had made for himself. So I assume that she decided to strike out on her own because she had to get back to Meereen & likely figured Drogon was just going to keep returning to that same hill regardless of what she did, and his unreliability as a mount made him unsuitable to scout with due to her inability to consistently control the direction he flew in.
! Interestingly, it seems as though Dany had a considerably easier time controlling Drogon at the end when she had abandoned her whip and used only her feet and hands. I think that may tie in somewhat to the whip being a representation of slavery (at least in the cities along Slaver's Bay), and Dany's assertion to the Good Masters of Astapor in ASOS that "a dragon is no slave." Perhaps Drogon objected to the whip after he had been subdued; he is her "child" after all, not her servant or some dumb animal, and her usage of it just seemed to piss him off in her last chapter. His behavior is certainly a product of Dany's woeful neglect of her dragons for the duration of the book, so perhaps now that she is in a position where she must rely on him (especially given Khal Jhaqo's return), some of that trust can be rebuilt and she'll be in a better position to control his behavior. She'll certainly have to learn to control her dragons if she intends to conquer Westeros….which, after reading ADWD, I'm beginning to suspect she won't set foot in until ADoS. :\
I just finished book one, and loved it! Just tell me one thing, do the fantasy elements come more and more abundant as the story goes on? I'm fine with it either way, I was just wanting to know.
I'm about half way through "a storm of swords" and
! the betray of Frey and Bolton is so obvious that I hope there is a big suprise waiting

! To some extent, yes they do. Magic appears to be linked to the presence of dragons in the ASoIaF world, growing stronger since Dany's dragons have hatched.

! I guess the part at the end were she easily called and "controlled" him is what threw me off, plus plowing through the last 70 pages at 2 in the morning couldn't have helped.
! And yeah the deeper and deeper the plot gets and the longer and longer the series gets…I'm thinking it's going to take more books than the 7 GRRM has planned. Considering the shitstorm in Slavers Bay/Free Cities is going to have to be resolved, all the crap in the 7 Kingdoms has to sort out, Dany has to go forth and conquer, and finally the epic Humans+Dragons vs Others battle has to take place. Throw in all the mini storylines with the PoV people and underlying stories like the Old Gods vs The Seven vs R'hllor, The Children of the Forrest, the Doom of Valyria, the history of the Lysanna-Robert-Rheager story, ect....And considering the current pace...yeah finishing in 2 books seems an unlikely goal.

! I think it's really interesting that you can think he's gone so far out of character whereas I think he's just basically grown some kracken balls. I can see where you're coming from but I just don't see it like that. Firstly I don't believe it was stated anywhere that it was custom to beat your wife to death with your bare hands if you catch her cheating in the Iron Islands. I read that as how very serious Victarion is about everything and how personal he's willing to get. Balon was mad, Aeron was madder, and Euron is the maddest of them all. And while i'm sure the others have done some pretty awful things we've never heard of any of them doing something that brutal yet. So to me Victarion has always come off as someone who will leave a trail of bodies rather than prisoners and be proud to say he's done it. Not a guy you want to mess with. BUT he has always been in the shadows of his other brothers up till he's sent across the Narrow Sea. Now he's got some breathing room. He's stepping out from being a follower to being The Leader. He's going to get a dragon and a huge fleet and be the greatest king the Iron Islands ever made. At least thats what i think his mentality is.
! As for the boys. The ironborn don't seem the type to tolerate homosexuality and i read that as an Ironborn thing rather than a Victarion thing. Dorne seems like the only place in Westeros where homosexuality is tolerated. He could've put them to work but they weren't really made for oars work i'm sure and the Ironborn aren't slaver. So throw em overboard.
! Killing that guy who lied? I barely noticed that? We've seen people killed over less by men who think themselves better. It wasn't nice but hardly psychotic behavior in ASOIAF.
! He's always been a very religious man though. Even when he was on the Iron Islands he showed great respect for the Drowned God and practices of that religion. Even after all Moqorro did for him he still shows extreme loyalty to the Drowned God and warns him not to insult him the way he did. Now you're right, he's got two gods. And R'hollar is a very hungry, demanding god as we know. His sacrificing those girls shouldn't really come as a surprise. At least not in a way that would be read as out of character.

Still, I guess that's just how I saw things.
DwD was aweeesooome.
I think I'm gonna take a break - then maybe start up again on GoT.
I'm almost done. Should finish it today most likely!
Once I get done, I want to go back and read the story but only from one PoV at a time :)
Like all of Arya's chapters or all of Jon's.

Like all of Arya's chapters or all of Jon's.
Are you talking about like, doing that through all the books? (Not really spoiler at all.. def not to you, Kits):
! All Arya chapters through all 5 books, then all 5 books with Tyrion, then all… 4 (I think) with Cersei? I'm not sure if that would be too beneficial since you don't have other chapters to compare to it timeline wise.. plus certain details that would make a chapter make sense wouldn't be there since it was in the previous chapter (which was someone else's POV). But again, if you're whole idea is to "become" a character for the duration of the story so far, might be interesting, then power to ya.
! Well, obviously, PoVs get intertwined, and the only character it'd be easy to do that with is Daenerys. I have a resource that lists not only every chapter a character is PoV of, but also every chapter they appear in. I just think it'd be interesting to read the story with everything limited to a single character's point of view.~
