gotta speed, keed
General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)

gotta speed, keed
-
A big part of the problem is the design the levels like Sonic has to do 300 mph at all times.
When really 30 mph in the fast areas is more than enough.
And momentum, both building and losing it, gives them trouble.
Even though plenty of other 3-D games know how to make it work. (After running for a bit, you get a boost effect and start going faster… and then after doing that speed a little longer, you get another boost and hit top speed. As seen in diverse properties like Okami AND Sengoku Basara.)
Instead they set it up so Sonic goes from 0-300 in a couple of seconds... and runs into walls and over edges constantly. They design racing games... with enemies... and aren't willing to admit they're designing racing games.

And thus the Sonic Cycle begins anew.
-
Does original Sonic count as a NEW "friend"?
-
If they interact as different characters, then yes.
-
That's not his friend, stupid. That's his son.
-
Then who's the mother?
Oh god, Sega, what have you done?
-
SEGA…..I don't even know what to say.... I'm not mad, I'm not disappointed, I'm not happy, and I'm not excited. Just very, VERY confused.
In other news...

I guess I'm the only one who thinks classic Sonic looks cool and he should replace the modern one:ermm:?
I'm thinking this game will be like Sonic Colors. It seemed to get good reception and SEGA will try to keep it the same.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks classic Sonic looks cool and he should replace the modern one:ermm:?
I've never had an issue with skinny, green eyed Sonic, nor do I have any issue with this revival of Sonic's old look. My general issue is "Who gives a shit?".
Sonic is Sonic. If he's blue, fast, and looks remotely similar to how he did in the past, it's Sonic. Do I like classic Sonic? Yes, but I don't care either way.
What annoys me is that something as stupid as "Sonic doesn't look right" is the complaint SEGA takes to heart. Not "Your game plays like shit". Not "Your camera works like shit." Not "You need to stop making piece of shit storylines for your games". No! Sonic doesn't look like how he did in the past, so let's make a game based off of his old appearance.
Granted, this game could possibly have the best gameplay, camera, and story imaginable. Their reputation however causes serious doubt.
But it feels like the fans are what are ruining the Sonic series. And no, I'm not saying "It's the complaints that are ruining the game! They should just play and not complain." No, several Sonic games DESERVE complaint. But not horseshit complaints like Sonic's appearance/Sonic's friends being in the game/Sonic not running fast enough (seriously…)/Sonic not being edgy. This is the crap that kills Sonic.
The general complaint needs to be, "Make us a good game with a good camera and either a storyline that doesn't make us vomit or not storyline at all....POR FA-FUCKING-VOR"!
But now, we have a new gimmick created by a bullshit complaint. Whether this game is good or not, god only knows.
By the way, whatever happened to Sonic 4 Episode 2?
-
They apparently only started working on episode 2 fairly recently.
So add not understanding how episodic gaming works to sega's repertoire.
-
To be fair, Valve's been having trouble with that too.
This is a shot at Valve more than is it a defense for sega.
-
I've got to be honest the ONLY time I've EVER heard anyone bringing up the whole "Sega is listening to a couple of fans complain about Sonic's appearance" is here.
I've never heard that brought up anywhere. I wouldn't even have guessed people have said such things until I came here.
In fact, it seems to be brought up every other post here >_>
-
We must not be reading the same thread then.
-
Oh believe me. I WISH I were making up the complaints about his appearance.
-
The appearance complaints are only a symptom of all the other problems with the franchise. I guarantee that if sega were still knocking out good sonic games with the post SA sonic look, such complaints would be limited to the usual weirdos sonic seems to attract.
It mainly just gets added to a laundry list of things wrong with the franchise with other such superficial complaints that don't matter, such as wanting eggman to be called robotnik.
Rearranging deckchairs on the titanic is not going to help.
-
When I first saw the trailer I didn't even notice the difference between the Sonic. I just assumed it was a new gimmick where Sonic got cloned and ran alongside himself. I see it now tho.
Then I watched that video and laughed so much. Especially the bit where he says that all of his Sonic merch is gonna be worth loads now XD
-
I will say. I do like how they did 'classic' Sonic. It DOES look how he did in the past, which is pretty cool.
I don't think this game will be bad immediately (although, if it's entirely Kinnect, it will be), but I do have a hard time seeing the point in including Classic Sonic. I mean, if this were Megaman and we were getting a game with Classic Megaman, Megaman X, Megaman Volnutt, Megaman.EXE, I would totally understand, but neither of these Sonics have any real differences beside maybe Homing Attack.
And yes, I realized Megaman Universe COULD have had those guys, but it was cancelled.
Rearranging deckchairs on the titanic is not going to help.
HAHA!
Perfect analogy.
-
Well Sonic Colors convinced me Sega could do a good Sonic game again if they really put their minds to it. Everyone has their down periods, so I'm willing to forgive and hope they go two for two here.
-
Wake me up when this round of the cycle ends again.
-
I think the big problem with sonic games in the past decade is right in the fucking cinematic: Sonic speeds along, and then when it comes to the hops, he unrealistically slows down his pace in a split second, loses all his momentum, makes a few awkward hops, and then goes into another boring running section.
sega, JUST GOING FAST DOES NOT MAKE A GAME GOOD. I think Robby said something similar a few pages back, about how sonic does not need to be going at a billion miles and hour, and reach that top speed in a split second, because it feels incredibly unnatural and when you slow down for the platforming, it breaks up the flow something fierce. Slow the damn guy down, then maybe your game won't feel like whiplash every few minutes.
-
My thoughts on the teaser:
"Should 'Classic Sonic' really be a priority?"
That's all.
-
I'm excited about the new trailer, but of course, I always know it will all end up blowing up in my face when I get excited for something Sonic-related on a home console. Nothing can be said until we see actual gameplay footage.
-
-
I will LOL so hard if they hire Jaleel White to voice classic Sonic.
That said: it seems kind of odd that classic sonic is reserved for 2-d gameplay and modern Sonic has Adventure-style stages. Hope that ends up not being the case, but we'll see.
-
So… classic Sonic gets 2-D and modern Sonic gets auto-rails 3-D? In stages that look like they're... exactly like old stages? Only really really cluttered?
Can't really tell anything about the 2-D gameplay since the clips are so intentionally short. Physics look about right, but thats hard to judge from what they showed, as is actual level design. (And its the token green grass/checkerboard level at that.)
But the 3-D is very clearly long thin automated rail paths pretending to be a racing game again. Meh.
I will LOL so hard if they hire Jaleel White to voice classic Sonic.
That would instantly redeem any other flaws in the game for me.
-
Kotaku just put a bit up about their impressions
http://kotaku.com/#!5793017/sonic-generationes-is-like-a-dream-sonic-game-except-its-real
I'll be honest that footage is more impressive than I thought it would be.
Still… fucking hate classic Sonic's design in this.
-
Robby… really? ...really?
-
Thrill as you can choose between 2 dimensional paths or the same 3D auto rails in the last couple of sonic games!
God this is gonna suck. But I agree with Robby, if they get Steve Urkel to do classic sonic's voice I may give this one a fair chance.
-
What? Jaleel White was great as Sonic. He's the character voice in my head. And SATam is pretty much the pinancle for Sonic story and characterwise, and it was a very distinctive voice.
Its not like he was doing the Urkel character.
Mostly it would be Sega genuinely showing their roots and acknowledging their past… akin to blaring the classic "Seeeeegaaa" sound at startup (which they never should have gotten rid of to begin with).
But it'll never happen.
-
I'm talking about the avatar dude…
I'm okay with Urkel voicing classic Sonic again.
-
Jaleel White is great, but you can hear Roger Craig Smith's voice from classic Sonic at 19 seconds.
I will LOL so hard if they hire Jaleel White to voice classic Sonic.

No, he doesn't. He has Unleashed style levels. I just hope they slow them down to Colors speed and add some platforming.

Game will suck, franchise will limp on, sympathyx will embarrass himself making excuses, sky is blue.
-
God this is gonna suck. But I agree with Robby, if they get Steve Urkel to do classic sonic's voice I may give this one a fair chance.
My main gripe with this so far is that it feels like they're desperately pandering and trying to please everybody.
Holy shit Steve Urkel voiced Sonic?
You learn something new everyday.
-
The 2d looks way too visually cluttered, 2d should keep it simple.
-

Is it time for Alex Kidd to take back his throne as Sega's mascot?
-
@RobbyBevard:
Chrissie, Holy Hell and Satsuki made me do it.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Loved Alex Kidd good memories right there.

Nah. I think PSYCHO FOX is due a triumphant return.

0/10.
I think you might be losing your edge.

Haha I loved when everyone was bumming the Sonic Fan Remix despite possibly being the most cluttered 2D platformer ever made.
Seriously, try and pick a fight for just one thread man. I didn't really think that the initial trailer for this looked that good and I'm still pretty on the fence about this one.
-

I almost typed "unleashed", but thought otherwise to avoid "BUT THERRS NO WHEREHOG STRETCHY ARRMS THERR!!!1". Damned if you do, damned if you don't I guess ^_^;;;

This is pretty much my thoughts too.
I think around the development of Sonic Colors, Sonic Team's thick heads were finally penetrated with the realization that they genuinely had no idea what they were doing anymore and now they are just trying anything and seeing what'll stick.
The problem is just because they realized that their last games were horrible does not mean they know how to make a good game next time. If they cannot realize what they are doing wrong, any game from now on will be the same mediocre auto rail bullshit we've dealt with for awhile.
And really, how low on ideas must Sonic Team be when the big selling point for Generations is that you can play as new or classic Sonic?
-

You mean that remake that was made by two people and managed to have almost perfect physics compared to sega's laughable attempt with sonic four.
Even if the artistic direction wasn't all there, which I said at the time, it's a freebie project by two guys that outshone the work of the company that made it, which is….kind of embarrassing for sega.

You really must have lost it then.

Yep. Gameplay was alright but the art direction was fucking all over the place.
-
Which was noted at the time so I don't see the point you're driving at.

I love the quote notification function, it's like an instant angry-goofball rant button lol.
Quote a guy and mock his favorite dumb thing, and you'll get a gift-wrapped spittle tinged rant!Watch.

Many times when Sega tries a new idea it leads to something this.
