I get coupons and stuff, so my volumes are always $7-8.
I know lots of people bash coupons, but they can really help.
This is true
With my coupons, I save at least $4-5 bucks :ninja:

So this is Shueisha's fault then? Did they even know what volume they were approving or did they just skim through it?
To be honest, I call bullshit.
I reckon it's just a stock Viz response. The Facebook rep doesn't seem to have much of a clue tbh.

Why would it be? VIZ is partially owned by Shueisha.
Why did I predict that that our current "Impel Down" related upset would give the typical thread-crashers(the dans, specially the one that does not support ANY release and not only Viz) the opportunity to dig up old bones and repeat this whole cycle of fighting again? Good thing this got old pages ago and pages before that.
I could care less about the Zolos and Tweet Tweet Fruits. It's the little things that should never have made it past the proofreaders that annoy me. Changing the title of "The Second", calling Vivi by her last name for an entire volume, the Kuma/Rayleigh convo and now the Impel Down title on a Marineford volume.
And I don't see why those things aren't worth discussing. This is the Viz thread, not the Buy English One Piece Or Shut The Hell Up thread.

I'm surprised there isn't a thread for that. There oughtta be.
I'm surprised there isn't a thread for that. There oughtta be.
Because that's called forcing an opinion on someone.
If you guys like it, be my fucking guest. But this is the "Viz" thread, and we're allowed to discuss their shortcomings.
Deal. With. It.
And I'm with Kaiolino, it's the little things that really do add up. That's my opinion. That's what I think.
Sometimes I do wonder what's the point of discussing the same thing over and over again without a change in view, stance, or participants. But whatever. It's not like I'm telling you guys to stop. Just sayin it as it is.

It's nice to see theres atleast some voice of reason in here
@Badass:
Their translations are fine, mostly.
In fact, their translations cleared up (to me) what Crocodile meant in Impel Down when he talked about the "Silver Medalists" (as scanlators referred to them as). Because of that translation, some people assumed them to be a group like the "Shichibukai" or "Yonkou" when really they were just "Second-rate pirates" (Second rate=Second Place=Silver Medal, as opposed to Gold for first place). So their translations are usually good and clear.
Things they have messed up on, however:
-"Kami" and all the god-censorship in Skypiea. Completely unnecessary censorship.
-On Impel Down's "baptism" ritual, they said that the prisoner's clothes were dropped into the boiling water…and then went on to say that some prisoner's went through this without batting an eye...which is kinda odd, because if it was just their clothes, then why would they bat an eye? I'm gonna chalk that up to an error, though, because they did say that some of the prisoner's withstood it and there was a line directly after it that said something about their clothes, so maybe that messed them up?
-Dialogue between Rayleigh and Kuma. They used "You expect me to believe you're the real Kuma?" instead of something like "You expect me to believe you're for real, Kuma?"
Though that "the real Kuma" thing could make sense. Consider this. When a person you know starts acting oddly, some people would use the expression "Who are you and what have you done with my brother/my aunt/etc." Perhaps this is what they were trying to convey with that. Something like "The real Kuma would never do something like that/this."
You missed just a couple of things:
1: They outright lie to you in Alabasta about what the Kanji on Bon Kurei's jacket says. They leave the Kanji alone, and it says "Okama" (Transvestite) with a translation note in the margins. The Translation note, however, does not say "Transvestite", it says "Oh Come My Way". They also outright change every instance of "Okama" to "Oh Come My Way" to the point that "Okama Kenpo" becomes "Oh Come My Way Karate"
For some reason, censorship got less harsh in Impel Down, because they started using terms like "Drag Queen" there, but yeah, all of Alabasta is Censored.
2: The most obvious and cited example, If you know Zoro as "Zoro", he's "Zolo" in these volumes. It's not that big a deal to some, but if you're used to his actual real name (Zoro) then seeing the wrong name is jarring to some people.
But these books translate almost all of the words, including "Nakama", "Shichibukai", "Ossan", and "Baka", so they're already 100x better than the fan translations.
Plus, you don't have Oars saying "Oh my Fucking God! I fucking have a fucking cockpit in my fucking stomach! It's fucking like I'm a fucking Robot!", so that's good.
Not so sure that Zolo should even be mentioned at this point.
@dirt:
Not so sure that Zolo should even be mentioned at this point.
I know, but he was actually making a "List" of the things the manga had wrong with it, Just felt incomplete.
But yeah, everyone knows they got his name wrong at this point, so it really is kinda moot.

Ah, you're right. I completely forgot about Bon Clay's Censorship.

And I guess "Zoro/Zolo" should be added to the list.
So the [revised] list of things Viz has done wrong:
1-God Censorship in Skypiea
2-Lying about Bon Clay's jacket and censorship of him in Alabasta.
3-Zoro/Zolo and Tweet-Tweet (both 4kids terms)
4-Impel Down Prisoners and their clean clothes
5-"The real Kuma"
Overall, not a very long list, but some of the things have weight, like the entire censorship of skypiea and bon clay.
Oh, and on an unrelated note, I flipped through the March Shonen Jump at a store today and it had chapters 579 to 581 (Ending with Doflamingo taking out Moria due to orders from people Higher than Sengoku). That means Luffy's flashback starts in the next issue. Also, Cross Epoch will be published in the next issue.

Elaborate on 4 and 5?
I think I've missed something here

And they were both mistakes, not censorship….all in all fan translators make just as many mistakes or alterations to dialogue. Like Binktopia's use of cursing...I think anywhere you see f*** used it's pretty much the scanlators taking liberties.
I mean, like Whitebeard's final speech...I noticed some confusion on various OP boards because Binktopia originally had Whitebeard say to Blackbeard "You're not one of them." which almost made it sound like he was claiming BB wasn't a real D. in the context of the previous page. However, Viz made it a bit more clear: "You're not him. You're not the one Roger is waiting for." This more effectively conveys the meaning of that line.
Just to show that while there are examples of mistakes by Viz that are off, there are a bunch made by Scanlators that are off as well.
Also, yeah glad we don't have a lot of "Ouka Shichibukai" and "Yonkou" and "Nakama" terms flying around.
Anyone else find it strange that they're calling Whitebeard's arc IMPEL DOWN?
Anyone else find it strange that they're calling Whitebeard's arc IMPEL DOWN?
Whoa, Deja Vu.
We all do. It makes me wonder if they are copping out on Paramount War. I would message them on Twitter about it, but they stopped being active since the speed-up ended.
That's certainly bothersome. I don't like how they started listing the arcs on covers in the first place. For them to get it wrong would just be idiotic.
Sorry for repeating something someone's already said. I didn't quite feel up to going through 447 pages to see if it was mentioned.
Anyone else find it strange that they're calling Whitebeard's arc IMPEL DOWN?
Yes. yes we all are. very much so.

Boy, are we slow today.

Also for censoring don't forget about the Merry Go but they had to go with 4kids dub to avoid confusion and even now they have to continue with it.
That was a Viz term actually, they used it first, before the 4Kids dub even got to the Kuro arc.
I think they probably just thought that "Merry Go" was more proper grammatically than "Going Merry"
to me…it's like "Gear Second" vs. "Second Gear"....it really doesn't matter and to be honest you would never say the phrase "Gear Second" in English.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:

Merry Go is not more grammatically correct, it was just a case of 4Kids terminology.
Uh…Viz had One Piece before 4Kids got the anime.

I too think "Gear Second" to "Second Gear" isn't a big deal, but just to say, "Gear Second" IS Proper English.
Just think of it like this "Gear: Second"
Like, he's calling out the "Gears" he's shifting into. Like you would number the FUNi DVDs. "Season 1: Second Voyage"
So do Viz use 'Sunny-Go' instead of 'Thousand Sunny' as well?
No, they use Thousand Sunny.
That was a wonderful question.
@Badass:
What I said in my last post:
Thanks a lot, Sorry I missed that one.

I've been dogging them as much as I can on their facebook pretty relentlessly the last two weeks or so.
They seem pretty active on that, although they take the best part of forever to reply.
If your going to complain at them, do it there.
@Yuugi's:

After 4Kids got "One Piece" things changed. VIZ used to use Zoro, and 4Kids got to certain points in the storyline before VIZ, so that's why they were using Merry Go and Rougetown, cuz that's what 4Kids used before VIZ got to those points in the story.

My first printing of Volume 5 is from October 2004 and has "Merry Go" in it.
Looking at the listings, 4kid's kuro arc ran from November 04' to January '05. Unless toei did something odd again, the first time we should have heard merry go/going merry would be in a January ep, so the viz one would have a three month head start on it, not to mention that it would probably have been translated even earlier.
I wonder if Viz will change Hoe's name.

I also left a message on Viz's Facebook page Sympathy, right above your follow-up message as a matter of fact. It does seem like they do respond to messages left on their Facebook wall, so I think the more people we can get from here to politely explain our reasons for why the cover for Volume 57 should be changed, that is the best chance of seeing any feedback.
Merry Go is as bad as calling Son Goku, Goku San for an entire series.
I wonder if Viz will change Hoe's name.
If someone in the staff isn't aware of what gardening tools are, then probably.
I wonder if Viz will change Hoe's name.
Didn't aohige or someone say that the name Hoe was incorrect? And that it should have been something like "Whae"? I remember reading that in one of the chapter threads when people started giggling over the name "Hoe".

Merry Go was a term originally used by Viz, as people have been trying to point out to you. They used Merry Go even before they changed to Zolo.
In theory, it should be Whoe.
Oda disagrees.
@Badass:
Didn't aohige or someone say that the name Hoe was incorrect? And that it should have been something like "Whae"?
If he did he's wrong.
Its ホエ (Hoe), it would be pronounced 'Ho eh'.
It's romanized as "Hoe" in the manga, so I guess that's his right name.
Well, Oda does make mistakes sometimes. Like the whole Big Mam, Big Mom thing.
If he did he's wrong.

Yeah I looked up Aohige's posts in that thread and he was corrected, as it was romanized as Hoe, but apparently the name comes from the Japanese spelling of the english word "Whale".
Also. A bit after I logged onto AP today, I received a certain private message.
Here's some of that private message:
@Alexis:
Hey:
I'm the One Piece editor at Viz and your translation issue posts were very helpful. Thanks for listing stuff and I'll make sure to fix the errors I can in reprints.(#s 4~5)
If you ever notice similar stuff, please email me at #########@viz.com and I'll do my best to fix things up.
PS-The printed Volume 57 cover will say Paramount War on it. The current one on websites is the preliminary one before Shueisha approved the new subtitle.
I PMed her again, and she said it was okay for me to pass along the stuff she's said so far. I decided to block out the e-mail address she gave me (bar the "@viz.com"), considering this website is accessed by hundreds of people each day and I wouldn't want her to receive 120 e-mails from random lurker #95.
So, apparently you guys don't have to worry about the "Impel Down" On volume 57. It's going to be titled "Paramount War".
See? They listen.
