Tried the demo and I liked it quite a bit. I'll definately pick this up some time.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

Beat it. I had a bit of the ending spoiled for me prior, if that hadn't happened I'd be totally floored right now. People who say modern storytelling is incapable of delivering surprises and twists anymore should bite their tongue.
! But can we seriously expect them to release a sequel which involves us running around fucking things up as Dracula in a Tokyo-esque city? I can't honestly expect to see that, people were giving them enough beef for calling this game a Castlevania, how the bloody hell do you expect them to call a sequel like that a Castlevania? They should have just made this an original IP, people would promptly call it a God of War AND Castlevania ripoff if they did, but least it'd open more doors for future installments.
-
What and how many Sub-weapons are their.

What and how many Sub-weapons are their.
Depends on what kind of weapons you're talking about. You acquire a gauntlet, but it's not so much a sub-weapon as it's something you can make certain combos with. Your only other weapons are merely limited items, like holy water, faries, daggers, and a demon you can summon. Otherwise it's your holy cross all the way. There isn't any other weapons you can wield and fight with like their is in the God of War games.

The fact that the game has silenced most of the fanboys who have a high aversion to the term "3D Castlevania" and is gaining favorable feedback means it's going to open doors for future installments anyway.
-
Yes, but it'll still be called "Castlevania", thus why I think following that ending isn't likely.
! I think if they do decide to follow LoS's story instead of starting a brand new story with a different Belmont, it'll still take place during the Dark Ages. Someone on GameFAQs thought up a really good idea to follow the game, with Gabriel returning to the Brotherhood, revealing that the founders created the Lords of Shadow and with his slaying of them, also slaying the founders, and the Brotherhood proceeding to label him a heretic and orders his death. This is a really good idea, and has plenty of possibilites, and the events would surely only push Gabriel further towards the darkside to which he ultimately succumbs.
! My own prediction is that Laura is who turned Gabriel. I could see a faithless Gabriel returning to the Vampires' Castle to be a sort of father to her in an attempt at redemption. -

You pretty much answered my question. But i wasn't thinking in the context of God of War. I was thinking within the context of 2D side scroller Castlevania. By Symphonia of the Night most of the castlevanias to follow had a surplus of spells, skills, weapons, as well as the trademark sub weapons (with potential specials linked to each sub weapon) making it fun to experiment different approaches to a boss.
But I have been noticing a lot of comparisons to God of War so I'm not so sure if I care to buy this game. Seems like its another rip off game rather then having the soul of the original Castlevania series.
-
It is not a ripoff. If more "copies" implemented them as well as LoS, no one would be bitching about games not being "original" cause they'll be too busy playing awesome games. Here's the gameplay elements LoS borrows from other games:
Light and Heavy attacks, being able to be chained together for combos.
Gems to collect that increases your health and magic.
Gigantic bosses you must climb and attack the weak points of.People need to stop calling games like this "ripoffs". It's called "innovation". Games borrowed elements from games back in the day, and they too were called "ripoffs", but those borrowed elements today are now standard. Games would have stayed fixated in time if they didn't acknowledge the great ideas other developers had made. In another 5-10 years, all action games will play like GoW most likely, and no one will be complaining then. One recent example includes Resident Evil 4, which featured the over-the-shoulder shooting mechanic, which is now standard in every game involving third person shooting.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. It takes great achievements made in gaming to make a great game, they didn't choose these elements to be lazy.
If you pass this game up cause you think it's "too similar" to other games, or because it's not a carbon copy of outdated 2D sidescrollers, than you're a fool. Not calling you one, Mingo, I'm just talking in general.
-
This game is a God of War clone.
FUCK!
More of a gamestyle I love and wish they would do more of!
Goddamn you Konami! Fuck you and your children's children for giving me more of shit I like!!!!!!
-
You need to play this ASAP, Greg. I have a feeling you're gonna love it. You going to import, or are you waiting for the Japanese release? I imagine the Japanese release is going to be censored, I think the game would be rated Z if released there as it was here. Or maybe not, I'm not sure. There's no dismemberment, but there's blood and nudity.
-
I'm gonna import. It's part of my Christmas present along with Dead Space 2.
It's the simple things.
-
Alright, but don't go trying to Plat this thing in a single day. It's a solid 15 hours on the easiest difficulty just to beat it. BHK3 platinum'd it in like, 3 days… which is insane with the amount of ground to cover in this game.
-
I'll play it on the hardest difficulty first. That's what I've been doing as of late.
-
You can't really do that, as you gotta beat the game first to unlock the hardest difficulty. So this is a minimum of 2-playthroughs for a platinum. But after that it's more or less smooth sailing. Just gotta get use to using L2+Left analog stick to dodge. The right analog stick for whatever reason is… not used in the game at all.
-
I'll play it on the hardest difficulty first. That's what I've been doing as of late.
Greg knows how to play a video game.
Lately, I've been doing the same.
-
You can't really do that
Well, I meant hardest mode 'available'.
That way you don't get comfy with an easier mode.
When I did it with GoW3 it was mostly a breeze through the hardest difficulty…
EXCEPT FOR HADES, LABYRINTH & MOLTEN CERBERUS OH MY FUCKING GOD
-
Trying to think up some trouble spots for this game, but can't really think of any.
-
If you want to plat it, check my GUIDE out ;)
-
well,it's probably the worst castlevania since the nintendo 64 castlevania but it is still amazing
-

Which 64 Castlevania?
-
People need to stop ragging on this being a "bad Castlevania" simply cause it's "not Castlevania". Get over the fact it has oustanding names and terms connected to it, and accept the fact it's a really good game.
I wonder if they chose to not name this a Castlevania game if people would call it a "God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, AND Castlevania ripoff".
I just don't give a damn anymore, if the game is good, it's good.
-
People need to stop ragging on this being a "bad Castlevania" simply cause it's "not Castlevania".
I was of the mindset people ragged on it more simply because it's 3&D as opposed to being a sidescroller like 10 of like 13 or so of the games prior to it.
-
I rag on it because it's a snoozefest.
I don't really care about the branding, I just didn't find it to be that fun a game, and stopped playing it after a couple of worlds. Had a hell of a lot more fun with Darksiders.
-
still stuck at death's level in the rondo of blood… i cn finish off all bosses whitout taking a hit exept death,he way to overpowered in this game although his level isn't to hard
my favourite castlevania is still symphony of the night,it's an easy one(although galamoth was pretty much impossible on the normal way) but it is almost neverending
it has been in the ps3 store but i was 12 days to late to buy it:sad:
some people can still buy it but i dont have tht luck:getlost: -

Well, didn't see that coming. I KNEW that there was gonna be more to do with Laura, she just seemed like a loose end. It'll be interesting to see what the second DLC, which deals with the epilogue, is gonna be like.
-
The first DLC was known but not the second.
I just wish the wait wasn't so long.
BTW, did you get a new computer yet?
-
Nope. Same old timer.
-
I know I'm pretty much the only person who plays this, but I feel this needs mention because this is fucking awesome.
This game has been updated INSANELY!
Awesome, but not the biggest and most awesome update:
! DLC Characters:
-Julius Belmont (plays similarly to Jonathan, but can swing from orbs)
-Yoko Belnades (plays like a super powered Charlotte with less spells)
-Richter Belmont
-Maria Renard (holy shit, she's good)
-ONE MORE MENTIONED IN THE BOTTOM SPOILERS
! DLC Stages:
-Pyramid (you fight Ashtarte, lame)
-SOTN Arena/Underwater area (you fight Legion, awesome with multiple players)
-SOTN Castle Dracula entrace (you fight Beelzebub, awesome)
-ONE MORE MENTIONED IN THE BOTTOM SPOILERSEven if you don't intend to play this game, READ THIS:
! I can't find you a decent spoiler or image, but I'll tell you this.
! The final playable character is Simon Belmont. However, he's in his NES form. Why?
! The final stage allows you to play through ALL of Castlevania NES. Seriously. The entire thing! Everything is there. Every boss battle (from the giant bat, Medusa, the two mummies, the creature, and Death) prevent you from advancing unless you kill them.
! The only thing that kind of sucks is that the path to the Creature boss battle is inverted to keep the stage in one map.
! NES Dracula is, of course, the final boss. Let me tell you… I've been playing this game since September. I have a pretty mean Charlotte, and Charlottes can generally manage on their own if they are good.
! Dracula butchered me. I was playing Normal mode, the easiest of difficulties, and Dracula HORRIBLY KILLED ME. Seriously, the amped up the difficulty to remind you that this is NES Castlevania.
! Funniest thing, the stage and Simon are the cheapest DLC of this entire game. The second I find an image or a video of that stage, I'll let you know.

Do you know when that DLC will be released?

Do you know when that DLC will be released?
They are all available right now.
Not in a pack unfortunately. Each individually.

Wow…I just caught up on the levels I was missing this weekend...Alright thanks for the heads up.

Wow…I just caught up on the levels I was missing this weekend...Alright thanks for the heads up.
I have a feeling Origins (the NES map) was released today, because I bought The One That Is Many and Lord of the Flies yesterday.
Freaky…
-
Most likely. It's the first thing on the list in the "Add On" section of the marketplace.
-

That's what is stopping me from getting them, too much nickel and diming for just a few characters and two stages. I enjoy the game with a friend but with others it's just a grind fest of the fittest, sucks all the fun out. If they offer a package at a reduced price, I'll bite.
-
If anyone is interested I'm willing to play. I'm a good castlevania player, I just haven't spent as much time with the game as others you would play with online.

I somewhat understand. I hate DLC, but considering how much the game and DLC costs, it's not that bad. I mean, everything in total costs maybe $25-30 dollars. That's still half the cost of any standard disc game, and the usual cost of PSP or DS games. Not a bad price for a great online game.
I hate grind fests, myself. If people want to play the hardest stages, I'll run in with Charlotte or Yoko. But I'm perfectly happy picking one of my unused characters to play Normal.
The game is more fun when you take a break from playing the same stage on the hardest difficulty over and over. Plus, I have a habit of playing pranks on people in this game when playing on Normal mode.
If anyone is interested I'm willing to play. I'm a good castlevania player, I just haven't spent as much time with the game as others you would play with online.
Feel free to add me: Insider2OOO (capital 'o's, not zeroes).
If I'm not playing HoD, I'll be playing Resident Evil 5.

Harmony of Despair is finally coming to PSN later this summer. I haven't heard good things, but it's nice to see more XBLA exclusives coming to PSN.
Also, dove into Lords of Shadow: Resurrection a few weeks back, and that DLC is just one huge cluster-fuck of deaths. Instead of making the DLC longer by adding more content, they just took two short platforming segments and 2 boss fights and stretched it by having you die, and die, and die. Did I mention die? I thought Reverie was an "alright" DLC, not worth the price tag, but alright. But it looks like a fantastic DLC release compared to Resurrection. I still gotta beat Resurrection, I believe I'm on the second (and last) boss fight. This guy is way tougher than any boss in the main game, and I'm on the easiest difficulty setting…
-
Harmony of Despair is very good if you like multiplayer and replaying stages. Playing with friends who are actually willingly to play a variety of characters (seriously, I've had games where I played Charlotte and everyone else was Soma). DLC wise, Yoko, Maria, Trevor, and Fuma are all very good. There is no 'wrong' character to play as. I will say that Alucard is very boring, and Shanoa seems like the most useless character when she's actually really good….if you get her best weapons and master her spells.
Charlotte was probably my favorite.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be getting it for PSN. If you guys DO get it and want someone to join in, I MIGHT but I won't be getting DLC beyond the stages you guys want to play. Otherwise, I'll just play as Charlotte or Shanoa. Although, mastering Charlotte spells such as Heal or Hellfire all over again.....that sounds very...very painful.
I wish they'd just come out with a new HoD style game with new sprites, new backgrounds, and majorly supported online play that doesn't work like crap sometimes.

Yeah, you aren't kidding, it took me 2 hours to beat him. They probably figure "Oh, well 2 hours is the length of a movie and a movie is 10 bucks so it's reasonable!".
Also, I'm not convinced that they planned this DLC as the ending doesn't look like it fits the epilogue.
-
Before either DLC was released I had originally hoped Resurrection would occure AFTER the epilogue, but nope. Wonder if they plan to make a sequel from that… I wonder how that'd even work? Surely they wouldn't have it take place where the epilogue does.

Lords of Shadow 2 is apparently happening: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-22-castlevania-lords-of-shadow-2-to-launch-on-wii-u-ps3-vita-and-xbox-360
-
Eh maybe it'll be better this time?
I'd prefer another game in the standard Castlevania timeline though but this isn't bad news by any means.
-
Lords of Shadow might actually have been my favorite game of that year. It accomplished all the goals it set out to do, had great production values, only a few annoying parts, a somewhat sympathetic lead, and was fun (at least in my eyes). It was about the least groundbreaking game I've played in a while, but I loved it.
-
I thought Lords of Shadow was a substandard GOW clone with a banal plot, boring combat & a poor fixed camera. Will probably be giving both of these a miss if they're being made by mercurysteam again.

I agree it was great for what it was, i enjoyed it much more than i anticipated and the atmosphere was top notch too. I do wish for a return to japanese made classic castlevania, since i want to see where they take it (and i just like the overall feeling of those games a bit more and probably always will), but for now ill enjoy what they bring to the table. At this point with konami anything is better than nothing because they have been far too quiet lately and its a bit worrisome

And in two posts, we've given the full range of reviews. Nice!

This. Except my fav 2010 game was Red Dead Redemption… also this game shouldn't have had giant spiders.
Fuck.

Like a lot of people here I also enjoyed castlevania LOS but the only thing I really didn't like about it was it's titan boss(Like that giant rock golem lady and the snow giant) they were really disapointing to me. Also the dlc is too short for ten dollars.

The DLC was pretty terrible. Was a weird collection of the parts of the game that didn't work (platforming lava rocks and overly-complex bossfights) along with some new parts that also didn't work (vampire princess minigames!).
On the other hand, the main game was great value. That was a solid 10-15 hours of game, and they didn't cut corners on it, either.
Also, the soundtrack:
