Villain? Singlular? As in end-all sharingan wanker moon plan conjuring storytelling third rate Aizen Madara?
Narutos' occasionally given the villains nifty abilities (water shark missiles, endless puppets, saliva-arrow spider archer etc), but in terms of character Orochimaru, Zabuza, Deidara and Kisame are really the only ones worth mentioning…and only one had a decent death.

Back on topic, at this point, I can think of something FUNimation can do to help give the series more popularity.
I think most of us can agree it was the Arlong Park arc that cemented our love for the series, right? I know it was the case for me. Most people who rag on the show, once they finally watch that far, tend to become hooked.
So FUNimation should pack the entirety of Season 1 into a box set, for as cheap as possible, then advertise the hell out of it. Put it everywhere, do whatever it takes. Pair those ads up with all this acclaim the series is supposedly getting, it needs to be put back into the public consciousness. I mean, chances are box sets will come eventually, but we're already into Season 3 now with no sign of it. I'm not sure what they have planned for the series in the long term, but doing this would go a long way to gaining a lot of fans.
The point is if we can get skeptics to watch at least through Arlong Park, that would be all it would take. So making Season 1 as cheap as possible would help facilitate that. People aren't likely to spend over $100-200 for 4 DVD sets on something they may not even like, but a box set for less than half of that? Much better chances.
-
I think Funi should put it back on TV where it left off in skypiea; sorta where we left off in the US, Then dub a good portion of Water 7/ E.L., and put that on; People would love that arc. Also, down the line they could always air the first two seasons with a "See where it all began- 5 nights a week!" type thing.
wishful thinking

@JERK:
I don't know man, people exageratte things in fandoms:getlost:
Like when you say armadillo penis, it could actually just be an armadillo penis rather then an armadillo penis.
But due to your complete lack of self control and hatred sigh, you make out this armadillo penis to be an armadillo penis.Unlike rational me of course who wants to see this armadillo penis myself before I call it an armadillo penis.
Armadillo penis? Really, that's worth complaining about? That sounds like exaggerating to me.

It's all about economics. FUNimation has to wait to make enough profit on the original sets before releasing cheaper ones. Plus releasing full season boxsets too quickly teaches consumers to wait for later releases instead of buying the initial product as well as cannibalizes sales with the original boxsets. Until you can show people the whole first season for free on Hulu. Actually is it still there?

I dunno, it's been a long time since "One Piece" was on T.V. "One Piece" is really something you have to know what happens in previous arcs to get what's going on. I don't think new fans would want to walk in to it without seeing the beginning.

I actually agree with this. I was hooked by the Baratie arc, so if they pack Arlong with it that would do wonders.
Also…
I genuinely do enjoy Naruto, no joke.
-

So did I, I mean, I did enjoy the first half, Kakashi gaiden, and even the first parts post time skip when it was still all "Holy crap look at how everyone changed and stuff! :D" But now its just…meh.
I'm trying to enjoy it these days...trying so hard, but to no avail. After reading OP each week I often forget a chapter of Naruto came out as well, and when I do read it it's mostly just skimming/ glancing at the pictures.

Well I was a Narutard until around this time last year when a friend suggested that I start watching One Piece. Started at the beginning and loved it. Got to the end and started keeping up with the Manga and now it's my all time favorite. But, I don't hate Naruto now, although some stuff annoys me at times. Although the arc right now is really really meh.
One thing I've found though is that most of my friends who like anime and Naruto will warm up to One Piece, but with a lot of coaxing. One friend started liking it after watching Strong World, another after I showed him a couple episodes. Now they're hooked. But I don't think it's for everyone.
Some people don't like the art style, and that's fine. That's the same reason why I can't watch the cartoons Flapjack and Chowder, they're just visually unappealing. Even though One Piece is clearly gorgeous, some of my friends haven't been able to get past the art style.
Also, Armadillo penis' ftw.

ok clearly im missing the joke here on this. WTH is this? ^^^^^^

A unfunny joke by Kishimoto that has been blown out of proportions by the users of this forum
You know how there are stupid shit in scary movies we find funny, and then we get even more annoying than the stupid shit by constantly mocking it?
That's us, we're "Vampires Suck", we're "Scary Movie 3", we're "Meet the Spartans" -
you can't exaggerate an armadillo penis
it's impossible

That's us, we're "Vampires Suck", we're "Scary Movie 3", we're "Meet the Spartans"Hey, leave Scary Movie 3 (and 4) alone. It was not as bad as "Vampires Suck" or "Meet the Spartans". At least SM3+4 had some truly funny moments, unlike the other diatribes we've been assaulted with in the form of "parody" films.
But yeah, that "joke" was just…"Really?! We're still on that?!":wassat: And I've been doing my best at being patient with both Naruto and Bleach...but no matter what, each chapter feels like a chore. Such a shame.
-
Naruto has reached a point where I'm honestly losing track of what made it slightly better than Bleach in my mind.
It's first 16 books.
Also it's just terrible, not terrible and skullnumbingly boring.@friarcrotch:
Armadillo penis? Really, that's worth complaining about? That sounds like exaggerating to me.
Oh for crying out loud shut up already.

It's like bat-nipples.
Its a shorthand symptom of the whole, not an isolated abnormality.

Wow, geez, Armadillo Penis is not that unfunny and forced
-
See also "nuke the fridge". Its not that its the ONLY thing wrong with the property, but its an easy way to sum up all thats gone horribly wrong in a short simple pair of words.
-
That joke wasn't a big deal, it just was something that didn't make me chuckle or put a smile on my face. It wasn't anything terrible, pretty much everything I've seen has insignificant jokes like that.

Actually, I think it just really demonstrates the point. The fact that you can say "Yeah, there's an armadillo penis in Naruto" and have the reaction "That's not a big deal or all that stupid, it's just part of the series like usual", just really demonstrates how far the series has fallen, thats its such a case of just one problem among many.
Had the same thing happened in volume 10 right before the Rock Lee fight, I think a lot more people would have dropped the series on the spot.
wow, this cant be unseen
and to think i was about a chapter away from reading that…......WTH?
Don't worry, it shows up in the following chapter too.
-
It wasn't even the armadillo penis, is was the whole incredibly unfunny, awkward, spiritless joke that it just happened to be the punchline of.
-
Well yeah, that too.
-
Why was Naruto curious about an animal's gender anyway? It's not like young Goku's naive view on gender.
-
Because Kishi is a terrible writer.
-
that was a joke?
-
@RobbyBevard:
That's the ONLY reason I still read it.
And only at odd intervals at that.
But hey, Naruto has good points! Like the lead character having seizures upon finding out his friend is evil! The main female character promising to be a character's girlfriend in order to go kill her former boyfriend! Resolving the main point of the series and character dream off camera! Elite ninjas falling for tricks they know are coming! 600 billion exploding paper bombs! On camera armadillo penises appearing two weeks in a row!, and ignoring your confessed love interest for 88+ chapters/2+ years of real time is… pretty terrible.
...Geez I'm not even exaggerating about a single one of those things.
You reminded me all the reasons why I hate narutard.
-
@JERK:
Who the fuck are you to tell me what I do or don't do with shitty mangas.
I never gave you any advice. You must be seeing things.
There's a ton of ways something is shitty and reasons people have for putting up with shit past point of sanity.
Yeah. Just like there are people who eat shit. Still, it is a minority. That’s what happens with bad (shit) mangas. Few are the people that read them. Not the case here.
Bleach and Naruto are shit.
I congratulate you for eating shit.
ahaha no there isn't.
DBZ was at the same time as stuff like Slam Dunk. The only real modern shonen competition OP has is Hunter X Hunter.
Nothing else comes remotely close in terms of quality.I’m also a fan of HxH and I have all of its volumes, but HxH shouldn’t even enter in the equation. Normally, only one volume is released per year and only 310 chapters have been released, with many not being that good. Most of the Greed Island arc was bad. Easily much worse than anything Bleach ever produced.
Naruto and Bleach are shit..
Congratulations for eating shit.
Also I can't believe you pay for Bleach.
Yes, I pay for it. When you read the volumes in one go, they are actually better than reading one chapter at a time. And I have respect for the people who produce something that I like, reason why I buy the volumes.
Why don't you just scribble stick figures and have them fight, it would be the same value.
In 310 chapters Bleach produced less shit than HxH in the same amount of chapters and yet you think HxH is a fair contender to the best shounen title. Compare the first and the second bleach arc with the first OP arcs and most people will tell you Bleach’s were better. Personally, I’m not of that opinion. But I know that many OP fans didn’t like the first OP arcs while at the same time people recognize the Soul Society arc as one of the best shounen arcs of this generation. So no, Bleach isn't shit. I could agree that lately there's no plot and other things, but as a whole, Bleach isn't shit.
If you have terrible taste this makes sense.
I’m not the one who eats shit. If something is shit, I try to stay away from it.
-
HxH actually is OP's only 'competition' so far as the hearts of fans are considered at this point. Which is to say, OP has no real competition.
HxH has incredibly devoted fans.
It's too bad the author is a lazy waste of a human.
-
I still can't believe we keep going with the "One Piece art is ugly and doesn't help it's lack of popularity in the west". If you see some of Oda's spreads and still say his art is ugly and Kishimoto's abslutely bland, plain, cliched, overused and BORING drawing is "very cool", then I'm sorry, but something is wrong, VERY wrong with the world.
One Piece's strenghts should be praised, and one of them is definitely it's fearlessness in it's characters designs (like the so much hated Time Skip Franky).
Naruto's villains aren't THAT cool. I'll admit Kishi was quite good at the begining, and thus we got Zabuza, Orochimaru, and side characters with completely unique traits like Kiba, Shikamaru or Rock Lee. But now? Just look at the fucking kage's bodyguards. All of them. Or Team Hawk. Or Sai. For Fuck's sake, those are beyond shitty character designs.
Anyway, enough with the Naruto bashing. One Piece has to be popular because of it's strengths, not hiding them. "Don't look at the art, jut enjoy the story!", no way. Enjioy the story AND the art, because it's incredibly imaginative, wild and, yes, rich.
And really, the guy that got me into One Piece told me the other day "Skypiea is complete garbage. Like Thriller Bark."
Really, wtf. Thriller Bark is good, and Skypiea is far beyond good, is awesome. Bashing them because "they're not relevant", and not enjoying some of the most imaginative and crazy arcs Oda has made is absurd.Soooo, if you want your friends to get into One Piece, just tell them to like for what it's worth. If someone has to go through endless sessions of "get over the art", "get over some arcs that are boring" just so they can enjoy One Piece, then it's not worth the effort at all.
-

Could Fairy Tail be counted as one of the decent contenders with OP? I'll be honest, I haven't seen that much of it, but my friend (who loves OP as well) says that Fairy Tail is pretty damn good and reminds him of One Piece. As for HxH…yeah, that's another title I've been meaning to check out (just because it was made by the same guy who made YYH and some of the fight sequences I've seen in some vids looked sweet).

Fairy Tail is incredibly mediocre.

It would be like comparing a match to the sun.
-
For all the flack "One Piece" gets for its art-style, I have to wonder what some people are looking for in an anime, because "One Piece" has some of the most amazing drawings I've ever seen. I think most of the people that don't like the art-style are looking for a pre-conceived concept of what an action-adventure cartoon should look like, not necessarily good art in and of itself. Which is why many of them gravitate toward "Naruto" and "Bleach". I don't necessarily think "Naruto" art is bad, but it's certainly less dynamic and original.
It kind of surprised me how people are turned off by the art-style because it's so similar to "Dragonball", which was a big hit in America. Well it's obvious people liked "DBZ" because of the bad-ass looking characters, but there was still plenty of wacky an colorful designs in it. And of course the pre-Z stuff wasn't as popular
-
@Freddy:
Fairy Tail is incredibly mediocre.

Huh…guess I've got some procrastination to attend to whenever it comes time to check out Fairy Tail. Man, I had a good laugh when I saw your short but sweet analogy Greg.
-
I get what anti's saying people can get turned off by something because of annoying fans, but if that applied to everybody no one would bother checking out anything.
Yeah yeah I've heard it all before about "Naruto", doesn't stop me from thinking a lot of APers are exaggerating, I can't help but think that way and when a lot of them spend so much energy hating on a series I don't get why they'd be paying attention to if they disliked it so much. I mean if it was really, really that horrible I don't see how so many fans still stick around with it, I'm not the type of person that just assumes a bunch of people have bad taste. Last chapter I've read of "Bleach" months ago I didn't like so I'm not checking out the rest, but as for "Naruto" everything I've seen for myself I didn't mind, so if I get around to checking it out and I start disliking it I don't think it would've been a waste if I at least find out myself whether I like "Naruto" or not.
a lot of people - the majority of people, actually- seriously DO have bad taste, firecrouch. i actually recommend giving bleach and naruto a try to friends of mine who watch one piece and are shonen-action junkies. i don't have the same tolerance for repetitiveness and buckets of story and character cliches, but i realize others might.
still, most naruto and bleach fans sticking with the series that i talk to ADMIT IT'S PRETTY BAD, but continue reading/watching as a guilty pleasure thing. some of them just assume it's as good as a shonen series can get - i try to urge those people to try one piece out. others even just read it out of habit without enjoying it simply to have a weekly comic to read.
but yeah, naruto is literally twilight with ninja - same archetypes, story cliches, etc. some people can get into that sort of thing and enjoy it, knowing that it's not a brilliant work of literature or anything. other fans - the minority, i hope - see it through fan-goggles as a brilliant and epic character web; it's the same for the naruto fanbase.
-
Huh…guess I've got some procrastination to attend to whenever it comes time to check out Fairy Tail. Man, I had a good laugh when I saw your short but sweet analogy Greg.
FT is not the worst thing ever. In fact, parts of it are quite enjoyable. It's just not extraordinary in any level. It hasn't reached any HIGH point.
It has, on the other hand, reached terribly low points. Twice in a row. Rock bottom. Fake Karakura Town level of bad. Well, maybe not that much…
-
@Ao:
a lot of people - the majority of people, actually- seriously DO have bad taste, firecrouch.
I hear that a lot, but I just don't see it that way. Now I'm not saying that a series that's loved by millions can't be bad, but really what it all comes down to is that opinions vary among each person, everyone has their reasons for liking or disliking something and many times there's a pattern among fans. I thought "Fellowship of the Ring" was a really dull movie, yet everyone else liked it. Does that mean they all had bad taste? No, because my friends who liked it also like many things I enjoy too.
-

Well, I do have a high tolerance for bad anime/manga. I guess I'll watch/read it and make my own judgments on it…eventually.
-
I never gave you any advice. You must be seeing things.
No you were pathetically dictating the way people ingest stuff they don't like.
Yeah. Just like there are people who eat shit. Still, it is a minority. That’s what happens with bad (shit) mangas. Few are the people that read them. Not the case here.
No sorry, a lot of awful shit becomes popular, Naruto and Bleach for example.
I congratulate you for eating shit.
HAW HAW, YOU READ A BAD COMIC, AND IM TOO RETARDED TO UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE GET META JOY FROM DOING THIS
I’m also a fan of HxH and I have all of its volumes, but HxH shouldn’t even enter in the equation. Normally, only one volume is released per year and only 310 chapters have been released, with many not being that good. Most of the Greed Island arc was bad. Hey funny thing is it's release schedule doesn't change that it stomps the fuck out of anything Naruto and Bleach have done for roughly half a decade.
Such as Greed Island which was half boring half fun, and all better then Bleach at any point other then the start.
Congratulations for eating shit.
YOU SECRETELY LIKE IT LOL, IM DUMB AS HECK YO
Yes, I pay for it.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
When you read the volumes in one go,
Yeah yeah let me cut you off here.
I read the entire Soul Society arc, yes the inexplainably beloved "golden age" of the series, in one go and it was bland as fuck generic shonen that left me intensely let down.Bleach is terrible.
Also I love how you think peoples perception of bland mindless cliche bullshit will change because the pacing will improve.
It's the difference from a quick bowl of oatmeal and a long drawn out bowl of oatmeal.
It's still a bowl of fucking oatmeal.
In 310 chapters Bleach produced less shit than HxH in the same amount of chapters
That's because Bleach doesn't produce anything whatsoever.
It's Shonen on autopilot. Nothing ever happens, nothing ever surprises, nothing is ever going on.
It's just a laundry list of vague shonen events happening in a white space void as drawn by an overrated artist.
Even Hunter X Hunter's worst mistakes have more zest and appeal then anything that's happened in Bleach ever.
and yet you think HxH is a fair contender to the best shounen title.
You BUY Bleach. You literally exchange currency for a corporate executives sales pitch version of a 12 year old's power fantasies written on manila folder in mayonnaise.
Compare the first and the second bleach arc with the first OP arcs and most people will tell you Bleach’s were better.
Those people are complete morons.
Bleach's second arc is boring garbage. Not as bad as the recent stuff granted. But still completely boring shallow garbage.
Personally, I’m not of that opinion. But I know that many OP fans didn’t like the first OP arcs while at the same time people recognize the Soul Society arc as one of the best shounen arcs of this generation.
The Soul Society arc is complete phoned in trash that like Bleach will be forgotten in a generation.
So no, Bleach isn't shit. I could agree that lately there's no plot and other things, but as a whole, Bleach isn't shit.
No it's shit.
I’m not the one who eats shit. If something is shit, I try to stay away from it.
This metaphor is cute and all but you have lost literal cash paying for terrible awful comic books loll, check this guy out.
-
I appreciate I might get shit for this but I honestly think that Negima is a strong competitor against One Piece in terms of story, characterisation, art, combat etc.
If you can get past the terrible beginning and not care about fan-service.
The two series do have contrasting styles at telling a story though.
But this is a moot point since they're in different magazines and you'll never see them directly compete.
-
well i think fairytail is better than naruto
i only read/watch naruto for the action and weapons because the story don't go anywhere same with bleach i also only watch that for the fights/special abilitys just like naruto bleachs story goes no wherei watch and read naruto and bleach each week so stfu if your a fan of them they have no story really
they havent even beaten the first fking bad guy aizen in bleach yet they just sealed him away so he comes back again…now one piece and fairy tail actually have a story that goes somewhere
i would not come to this site if i was not interested in one pieces story line i would just wait for it to come out like i do with bleach/naruto

Well, and I certainly would have said then "good riddance" -
Honestly, Bleach used to be really good until Soul Society.
Don't get me wrong, Soul Society sucked and it was definitely the point where the series jumped the shark. But it was at least bearable until the Kenpachi fight.
I don't even get why people would even compare Bleach or Naruto to One Piece. They're not even on the same level. As Greg said, the only thing even comparable is Hunter X Hunter.
Speaking of which, does anyone really know the public opinion of HxH? Since One Piece is actually getting more popular here, I'm curious how one of my other favorite series is viewed.
-
So many fucking opinions in this thread. I hate you all.

What? Are we not allowed to critize bad series now?
Because Naruto and Bleach certainly fit the bill of bad series.
-
Honestly, does anyone hear an acceptable complain from people who think Naruto and Bleach are better than One Piece? I always hear stuff like One Piece is too confusing, or Luffy is too bland of a main character. I never got that.

I think that was sarcasm.

I think that was sarcasm.
Given that he seems to think Naruto is a legitimately good manga, I doubt that.
Unless that was sarcasm too and I'm just missing it completely.
