I am not sure if this was mentioned, but during Zoro's fight with Mihawk, Zoro was obviously cast as Luffy's right hand man. And I think Oda has done a good job painting Zoro in that role since the beginning. Admittedly, Zoro isn't the first mate in the traditional sense, but then again neither is Luffy the traditional captain or the Strawhats the traditional crew.

well..i'm in the grtoup that is certain zoro is first mate. luffy trusts zoro to no end (cept for certain joke moments). zoro's serious statements are taken as official commands by the entire crew (such as the usopp thing at water 7). and Zoro has displayed as the saviour of the SH , when he chose to sacrifice himself to Kuma in exchange of luffy's life. Sure, u can say Sanji did the same thing so why isn't he first mate, but Zoro knocked sanji out, showing that he is responsible for the safety of his entire crew; the job of the first mate.

Robin & Franky are older than him but the more obvious one is Brook. Zoro is not the oldest member but he has been with Luffy the longest.

Oda said Zoro is the swordsman of the crew. He never said JUST the swordsman (as though it was his only role) so this has absolutely no relevance to him being the first mate. Something everyone knows and has been portrayed over and over again.
People that can't see it must have shit in their eyes or are so accustomed to Naruto that they can't read between the lines and need everything spelled out like little babies. It has no use to argue about if Zoro is or isn't the first mate because he just is. Arguments are not even necessary.

I noticed this last chapter. Oda may have changed the scar on Zoro so Sanji and him can get head to head panels while both of them have an open eye (just trying to distract people and guide them away from the first mate talk...)

Interestingly according to the chapter 600 cover page, they are gone.
Unless it was just a drawing mistake.

We have many examples of Oda forgetting Zoros scar on the chest.
I guess here happened the same, or over two years those scars finally dissappeared..
I thought they were cool and a keeper, because they showed how far he would go to even cut off his own limp.(Hope Oda didn`t decide otherwise)
