@imustang: episodes are very sketchy for canon, I would consider them non-canon but I can be a manga purist, mainly because of dub errors. Dende never says that in the manga.

FUNimationRules, why would you link that video? It's so painful to watch.
Watch? Are you talking about the commentary video of those two guys? Because I don't know if you still make videos, but your commentary tended to be equally as painful.

@Cyan:
Too bad it was all downhill for Yamcha from there.
I didn't like how Toriyama trolled him.
-
Thinking about it, I think Yamcha's biggest problem is just the whole aspect of "progression" in a shonen. Sure he was in the story from the beginning, but as new characters appear and take popularity away, it becomes harder for the mangaka to keep them relevant. Yamcha just got the worst brunt of it to the point he was defeated first by "an ordinary human" (sure it was Kami but…) and then by a random Saibaman. And then the last straw was just Toriyama needing someone to be Trunks mom...and realizing Bulma was his last major female he still had who didn't have a child...and that he needed someone to be trolled by the Androids...yeah, that was it for Yamcha.
-
poor yamcha. got his girl stolen by an alien monkey.

Curiously, in the beggining Yamcha was seen as a threat, like "Yamcha can appear at any time to steal the DB". I guess after that aspect of him vanished, as did his fear of woman, Toriyama lost interest in him. . .
I guess it would have been much better for him if he never appeared again. To make his tournament performances as pitiful as they were, just leave him as a forgotten half-villain.
Tenshinhan's fight was the ONLY time in DB history that Toriyama let him have an honorable fight, to the point of people going "WOW" at his Kamehame-Ha. Even Mutten Roshi and Goku shitted bricks at that. But both BEFORE and AFTER Tenshinhan's fight, Yamcha was fodderized to death.Jackie Chun defeated him with a gust of wind.
Mummy man destroyed him.
Shen basically said that "not even training for 100 years you could defeat me".
Gero fist-f*cked him.
… -
Shen basically said that "not even training for 100 years you could defeat me".
Actually, after their fight he said "with a little more training, you'll surpass me."
In any event, it was Yamcha's role to be the whipping boy and fail. That's why he's my favorite, cause he kept trying ANYWAY.

Oh well, I allways remembered it as "you're strong, if you train you'll get far. . .but you'll never defeat me".
I think in the spanish manga translation it was something like this. Anyway. Believe or not, Yamsha is also my favourite. I have a soft spot for the underdogs.

Namekian is part of the Dravidian language family. It's mutually intelligible with Tamil.

@Tokoro: I agree with you about your point on why Yamcha was less used in the series as time progressed. This is very common in shounen, characters lose impact over time, especially if you are a secondary character. Examples include: Iruka in Naruto, the list is too long for Bleach, arguably Leorio in Hunter X Hunter (for he is part of the core 4 man Togashi style group but he hasn't been shown in a good while), this sort of happened with Raki in Claymore and so on.
@Kouch: I don't know if it was Tori losing interest in Yamcha, more that he wouldn't have much to do with him as the power levels grew, although curiously enough Tenshinhan was weak by the standards of the Z Senshi anyway, yet he comes back at 2 points relatively late in the series and has badass moments. I know in manga this can be dictated by popularity. By the way I still love Yamcha's Raga Fu Fu Ken (Fist of the wolf fang gale) attack, in fact it's one of my favorites whenever I play the first Tenkaichi game.
-
Based off of the subtitles on my DVD, this is what was said about Yamucha and Shen…
Yamucha: What the hell?! You're practically dealing with me like I'm a baby…
Shen: No, no, you are indeed quite strong! I can tell this from the way you move. Unfortunately, I am simply much stronger than you are. Go train some more. You can still catch up to me yet!And of course Bulma and Puar have this little convo after his loss:
Bulma: How come Yamucha always has to fight strong guys like that? He never has any luck!
Puar: He never does! I feel so bad for Yamucha-sama!Oh if they only knew the events that would later take place.
-
Yamcha and luck. It just doesn't add up.
@Friend of Luffy and Gon: It's just that Yamcha got the worst treatment out of the secondary characters. Krillin got constant exposition in all the arcs, even when he did no longer act as a fighter. Hell, he got married to A-18. That's recieving the best treatment ever!
Yamcha got sidelined to absurd points. there's one particular moment during the Cell saga that is particularly painfull. When Piccolo and A-17 are fighting and Imperfect Cell arrives, from the Kame House we see Yamcha, Ten Shin Han, Krillin, Mutenroshi and Chi-Chi. Next scene, they decide to act: Krillin goes flying to search for Bulma's remote control thing; Ten Shin Han goes to help Piccolo; Mutenroshi damns himself for not being able to help; Chi chi looks at him with a worried face; Yamcha. . .Yamcha. . .WTF, YAMCHA DISAPEARED! He simply vanishes from the scene. Again: Even after showing reactions from Kame Sennin and Chi Chi, Yamcha is. . .vanished.So, yes; Toriyama got REALY TIRED of Yamcha. Or hated him. Or wathever.

^that was in Kai.. I think the animators just forgot he was there. snicker
Yamcha's also retarded though. When he found the androids… he LOOKED AWAY FROM THEM to call for help.
Idiot.
However, Goku's a douchebag for knowing about the room of time and space (or whatever), and not saying a thing about it.
Vegeta and Nappa wouldn't have stood a chance. Frieza.. wouldn't have stood a chance if he had came to earth. NO ONE would've stood a chance if he just said something earlier.
-
do you think they'll ever do a complete re-animation of a saga in this series as a movie you know like the one piece 8 movie, I'd love to see the freeza arc redone

How do you figure? The room can only be used by any one person for 2 days in their entire life, the equivilent of 2 years, during which they actually age. (And its deathly boring) Its not like someone could go in there and train for 100 relative years.
Would 2 years really have made that much difference against Vegeta? Nonstop training MIGHT have gotten the side characters up to Nappa level, especially since they all surpassed what God could teach them, but Vegeta? Never.
And Vegeta didn't even know achieving Super Saiyin was possible for a second person until he saw Trunks do it… so, he would have had no point in training pre-Freeza, and he was the only one that could have offered a fight.
-
Goddamn it just hit me while watching Kai today that Guldo is voiced by the same guy who does Satori and Wanze in One Piece.
That poor guy really gets typecast as freaky slightly annoying dudes, doesn't he?
-
I hate Wanze, I hate Satori and I hate Ghurd.
I must hate this voice actor now too.
-
Dragon Ball Kai's Ghurd is seperate from Dragon Ball Z's Ghurd, by the way. Kôzô Shioya voiced him originally but was replaced (along with all of the other Ginyû). Luckily he still plays all of the Majin Boo forms…at least as far as the current games go.
-
I never liked Fat Buu's Japanese voice. Not as bad as FUNi's Fat Buu, but still very annoying. The other Buus were done much better.
-
Hi there all =D
Was about to create a DBZ thread, luckily I saw this first. I'll post what I have to say anyhow:Sooo, I watched Dragonball Z as a kid after school on our craptacular canadian cartoon channel - YTV. Needless to say it was in english. I loved it. So much in fact that I remember the shocked faces of the boys in my fourth grade class when I participated in DBZ conversations.
Anyhow, I never actually finished the show because the fillers got to me, and I actually thought the show started to suck so I stopped watching. Now, many years later I've finally stumbled upon the awesomeness that is Dragonball Kai and started to watch it in japanese. I know from friends that Goku was voiced by a woman, but so is Naruto and Luffy, I thought. But, I can't stand his voice. I thought i'd get used to it but 13 episodes later I'm still not. He sounds like a middle aged woman and doesn't give off the same manliness from the english dub. That's.. weird for me to say.
But, i'm pleased with all the other voices and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Luffy's voice coming out of Krillin/Kuririn/whatever, so I continued to watch instead of opting out for the manga. Also hearing Luffy's voice come out of other characters is extremely amusing and gets me every time.
Example:

Well Son Goku was never supposed to sound 'manly'. He's a slightly goofy moutain boy at heart.
But you always have the option of listening to the dub of Kai.
Apparantly Funimation have done a decent job this time, compared to their awful dub of DBZ. -
I'll always defend Masako Nozawa as Goku's voice. I fucking love it. Especially when she has to sound all angry.
I'm infinitely furious with what they did to the super saiyan transformation on Namek in Kai. The original always gives me goose bumps.
And I love the Kkgggkkgkkgk in DB, especially there, unlike when Ace does it.
UeIKvcxWes0
HOW CAN YOU GET SICK OF WATCHING THAT?
Sean Schemmel did this transformation great, as well.
-
Apparantly Funimation have done a decent job this time, compared to their awful dub of DBZ.
Decent at best. There's still a ton of shit stains all over it, since they didn't dare annoy the dubbie fans by being too true to the original. Kaiou saying stuff that's reasonably close to what he originally said doesn't help that much when he still has that horrendously miscast and ear-raping voice from way back.
The Kai dub is quite overrated, really. People are too busy noticing how much better it is than the old shit they don't notice that it's still below par, and lacking a lot of stuff that would've been taken for granted in any other modern dub. "Holy shit, the dialogue is actually relatively similar to the original dialogue" isn't something that should be celebrated as a huge plus, it's a bare minimum for being anything but a complete joke of a dub.
-
The Kai dub is quite overrated.
I agree that the dub will never match up to the original.
But when you are going against Wakamoto as Cell, its really a foregone conclusionBut I will give them points for finally giving Freeza a decent dub voice.
His original dub voice was a crime against humanity. -

5 people each as strong as Nappa….. in 2 days...
They have a whole "year" (Saiyans came early) to train. I believe it was 2 months earlier correct?
avg of 30 days a month.... 60 days... so that's 365 minus about 62 days...
that leaves them 303 days to train, and make even more techniques. Even if they only trained for One year in there, and then came out.. they would've still been better off.
The problem is... they weren't even given the option to decide. I'm quite sure they would've taken the offer.
-
Piccolo's battle power rose up to 3,500 in one year, so a little extra time might've helped him out (being that he is from a already pretty powerful race). The humans…not quite so much. Kuririn rose to 13,000 against Reacoom and that was only after having his hidden potential unlocked. Six months with Kaiô-sama only strengthened Gokû (one of the gifted warrior race) to a battle power of 8,000 (with the ability to barely multiply his power four times). One hundred thirty days for Yamcha and two hundred sixty for Tenshinhan and Chaozu probably isn't going to shove them very far. Certainly not enough to ever make a difference against the foes that appeared after the Saiyans (like the Ginyû Special Squad who had battle powers ranging over thirty thousand).
-
Considering they were training with Kami, and KAMI IS THE ONE THAT KNEW THE ROOM OF SPIRIT AND TIME WAS THERE TO BEGIN WITH, I'm guessing they DID have the option, or Kami thought it wouldn't help any. Goku not mentioning is a whatever… if freaking Kami didn't mention it. They surely had the option. (Or you know, Toriyama invented 5 years later when he needed a cheap power up for the android saga and it didn't actually exist at that point.)
But. that aside. Okay fine. So they train for the extra two years get their powers up to 3,000 each, Piccollo up to 6,000 or 7,000. Then what? They clobber the saibamen easily, and then with a group effort, by a hair... defeat Nappa. Maybe Piccollo is even stronger than Nappa and beats him after a rough battle.
Vegeta then goes wide eyed and kills them all in the next thirty seconds after discovering he should take them seriously, instead of toying around with them and waiting hours and hours for Goku to arrive.
-
Well at least their Raditz was stronger than the Saiyan's Raditz.
-
Well, it the Daimaô himself was at six or seven thousand he probably could beat Nappa by himself. Nappa was at four thousand, after all.
As for the Room of Spirit and Time…when Gokû trained there his battle power was 260 (or higher). He could hardly survive a month in there at the time so I suspect the gang wouldn't have been able to either, even if they were in th higher hundreds or early thousands. The conditions are just too brutal to be constantly exposed to.
-
Well Son Goku was never supposed to sound 'manly'. He's a slightly goofy moutain boy at heart.
But you always have the option of listening to the dub of Kai.
Apparantly Funimation have done a decent job this time, compared to their awful dub of DBZ.True. Well I think i've been ruined forever because I Started watching DB/DBZ in english, so when I think of Goku, I hear the eng dub voice. I didn't realize how much "voice" plays a part in a character's personality. The eng dub of Goku and the original Goku seem like two different people. Same with Piccolo. In the eng dub Piccolo sounds like some gangsta bastard, in the original, it's much easier to connect to his char and see his "human personality" because of his normal voice. Although I must say I was a fan of dub Vegeta's voice. There's just something about it.
I took a look at one ep of the Kai dub but I can't do it, I wanna experience the show uncensored for the first time lol.
But I will give them points for finally giving Freeza a decent dub voice. His original dub voice was a crime against humanity.
Seconded.

His original dub voice was a crime against humanity.Wakamoto's Cell is pretty bad in Kai right now. I mean, listen to his voice and observe Cell's actions:
They don't really match up that well compared to how he did in Z. He especially sounds off during the whole Shin Kikoho scene. And it's not like age has anything to do with it, either. Masako Nozawa still rips out heavy screams at her age and Mr. Wakamoto's played Nobunaga Oda in Sengoku Basara, where we can hear his screaming and acting is still top notch:
-
I was 12 when I heard Goku's Japanese voice for the first time. My reaction was cool, he sounds like Luffy's Japanese voice. Though, I thought the complaints for that dub was like the complaints for the Naruto dub. That was until I read some of the complaints like changing the dialogue. As for the edits, it all depends on what dub you're talking about. I wouldn't categorize FUNimation's first dub of the 67 episodes (now 53 episodes) with the one done by their inhouse voices. Just like I wouldn't categorize their first dub of the 13 episodes of Dragonall with the one done by their inhouse voices.

Wakamoto's Cell is pretty bad in Kai right now.
Really? I though Wakamoto was knocking it out of the park.
Particularly with his first form voice. It had a lot more creepiness than his earlier portrayal. -
Listen to his second form. It sounds REALLY lackluster. Like there's no real emotion put towards it. Watch his reaction to Tenshinhan using the Shin Kikoho on him in Z and Kai. It's like he's barely pissed at all in Kai. o_o;
-
I wonder why he's worse…. I mean... with acting, the more you do it the more you get better.
So... How do you go backwards when it comes to this? 0.o
-
He's phoning it in like he did in some of the games.
-
Wakamoto has voiced the same dialogue in the games every year for the best several years. The three 'Budokai' games, the three Sparking games, Infinite World, Burst Limit, TAG VS, the two Shin Budokai games, and now two Raging Blast games. I wouldn't blame him if he showed up to sessions drunk now.
It is also likely that Toei didn't hire the same voice director from the first three anime and hired a cheaper one. We kno Dragon Ball Kai's had some budget problems, considering the voice of the East Kaiôshin wasn't sure they could hire him back (he even offered to take a pay cut).

@Tamaki:
What do you guys think of Raging Blast 2?
It should have Evil Buu and Piccolo Buu.
-
I don't own any of the current generation consoles, but Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 looks pretty fun. I'm not the most hardcore gamer, though, so as long as the camera's good and the controls easy to pick up on, I'm good. I'm really liking the new characters they added to the games, specifically all of Coola's Armored Squad, Tarble, and Hatchihyakku. Graphically speaking I actually like the new look employed by the design team. The characters have this psuedo-glossy glass feel to them. Although I must say I still am not a big fan of the Super Saiyans' hair. It's far to stiff. I thought they had gotten right in Sparking METEOR!!
