Talking about phobias, I have a weird fear of some powerful light sources.
I cannot have a lamp pointed towards me, but overhead lighting and the Sun are OK with me. When a lamp is pointing towards me, I either freeze with fear and have to hold back tears, or I just outright scream and throw myself out of its direction.
Just last week, a friend found out and turned on my lamp and pointed it towards the door for the next time I went in… let's just say he'll never ever do it again.

@ISBC: Thanks for the fun fact. Now I'm paranoid :getlost:
Hey, no thanks needed, man. I live to serve.
-
Oh crap, why did I look at those spider pictures, eeeew. I can't stand/I'm scared of any spider that's bigger than my finger nail. Even seeing close-up pictures of them on a screen is enough to give me the shivers.
Spiders are creatures straight outta your worst nightmares, I'm telling ya.
Though my ultimate phobia is emetophobia, the fear of vomiting.

I'm guessing you don't want to know how many spiders the average person swallows when asleep during thier whole life then…:ninja:

Fond memories of the 'naruto secondary character' debates came flooding back. I'd usually start besmirching his post history, but in fairness I did notice a vague improvement on his behalf, though I guess old habits die hard.
What thread/topic was it?

Ever been so scared you vomited?
Actually no, but there has been occasions where my anxiety level was so high that I was absolutely sure it would happen any minute, mostly during a panic attack. That in itself is scary and it sucks and I hate it.
-
Did we talking about Roachman VS Spiderman performance?
i also want to know! -

Thanks ISTBC.
Is their any way I could convince you to shorten your name?

It's out of my hands (long story, lol)
You aren't the first to decide it was too long–Sea, and even JD on one memorable occasion, have even honored me me by calling me "Mom," LOL, partially because of the name length issue, and partially the situation, though that was their decision, and is obviously not the thing for everyone.
So far my nicknames have included simply "Buster Call," and more recently "Buster Call Survivor," So if you prefer, you are welcome to use one of those, as the mood strikes you.

or you could request a name change :ninja:

Buster Call Survivor is great.

I could… but my IRL daughter gave me that name.
I dunno...
I'll give it some thought.
I edited my previous post. I was in the middle and got called away and it got posted for me, lol--I feel like it makes me sound like some sort of internet stalker looking to get kids to call me "Mom." (I didn't ask them to call me that--Sea started it and it was darned cute.) Funny it should matter so much since it's just a forum, right? And I think it's clear by now I'm not, but you guys are a great group of people and I'm proud ot call you friends, so I guess it does matter.
Gotta make dinner.

I thought your preferred name was Mama Whitebeard.
-
I could dig Mom. Makes the internet feel more homey. :)
-
You could make it OP relevant and change your name to 'Big Mom'.
Although I like your current one fine, I.s.t.B.C.
-
i vote for Mama Whitebeard.
but i think it's sweet that your daughter gave you your username! buster call survivor is fun to type anyhow.
@IrishLuigi: that is a terrifying phobia. i can't imagine how inconvenient and frightening that must be! i have another weird phobia, which is of flying objects like balls and shuttlecocks and stuff. so if i'm forced to play basketball or captain's ball etc., i spend the whole time running around trying to get as far away from the ball as possible.
i think it's because when i was in primary school, whenever we played captain's ball i would get hit right smack in the face by the sweaty and dirty basketball every single time. now if someone even tosses something toward me i flinch.

This.
I thought I was the only one with awkward phobias.
At least I got over it somewhat, by playing basketball in high school.
Somewhat.

glad i've found someone else with the same phobia. it's rather embarrassing, especially cause a lot of people don't really get it. someone suggested i force myself to play sports to get over it, but i'm not really sporty, and i don't think it'd work anyway.
-
I only have issues with bugs, specifically large ones and spiders.
I used to be petrified of the dark, but I've actually fought that fear pretty well. In fact, I used to be a HUGE scardy cat.
When I was a kid, I'd stay up late with my sisters, and they'd often watch horror movies. A lot of my memories of staying up late was either watching MTV or coving my face with a pillow to avoid watching a horror movie. But of course, I HEARD everything. I was so afraid of anything LISTED under the 'horror' genre, I refused to watch Scream, even when my same aged cousin watched it.
Now, I watch horror movies on a regular basis, and am a huge horror game fanatic.

As in the sticks that spark fire that people use during fireworks?
Ditto. The heat scares me, and I've always had the feeling they'd burn my hands off.

No, really now? I thought I was the only one in this world!:cwy:
It's not only the heat, I'm so far that I can't even stand their smell and the sounds they make. I can be in the same room with them, I can even hold one if I'm prepared. But jump at me with one unexpectedly and you got me.I have a sparkling fear of the retarded.
A Twilight reference? I've got your back, we are all afraid of that movie.

Due to Twilight, I cannot look at the words Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Bella, Swan and werewolves the same way again.

I'm terrified of babies.
Not themselves, they are cute.
Not the responsability, well it's scarry, but I'll handle it.
But the fact that they are so fragile, their skulls can change shape! they have almost double the bones in their undeveloped bodies! They can't say what's wrong with them! they are prone to accidents because they can't see them comming!
-
Babies also aren't born with kneecaps. They get them when their like, 2 or 3 years old.

GAH! How do they protect their precious little joints between the femur and the tibia and perone!!!
… Tell me that the 2th leg bone isn't caled "Perone" in english, please.

This might be an obvious question, but… have you played Silent Hill-games? I assume you have though, because I saw you mention Mary Elizabeth McGlynn in that context over at one of the matches in the tournament. And if you have, what do you think about SH? Sorry if this is creepy, I'm just curious because I love love loooove Silent Hill myself.
Right, back on topic. Um, fears, yes. Another thing that scares the shit outta me is going to the dentist. Honestly, as soon as I open the door to a dentist's office and smell that smell… I immediately feel extremely anxious. Once I'm in that tilted back chair and the operating begins I finally can't stop my tears. Bhhhhrrr, it's horrible.
Now fear of heights/darkness/narrow spaces are something I've never had. Well, the darkness thing depends, if it's my own room and apartment I don't mind moving around in pitch black darkness, I actually prefer it that way, but put me in a forest in the middle of the night and Imma shit my pants in a matter of seconds.
-
A cousin of mine is deathly afraid of corners, so he usually has his own "assigned" spots where he can sit that aren't in the danger of being pointed at by a corner.
-
Phobias, eh? Well, I've got a few. Let's see.
Like this irrational fear to vomit. Whenever I feel sick, I panic. A lot. I don't even dare to move most of the time until it's over/I fall asleep.
Also, I'm terribly afraid of everything bug-ish. That includes acutal bugs, spiders, flys (yes, flys) and especially the "dangerous" types such as bees, hornets or wasps. And mosquitos. Dear Dove, I absolutely cannot sleep whenever I know that there is one of those bastards in my room. The sound alone makes me run away. Basically, everything that is fast and small enough to crawl into my ear makes me cringe. It adds to the horror if it can fly.
I've overcome that phobia a bit in the last few years, but I'm still uneasy. I still absolutely can't stand bees, hornets, wasps and mosquitos.Ah, and I'm afraid of open, wide places, but only in the dark. I NEED something around me, anything. If I don't, I'll get really paranoid and need to lean against something solid because I always feel like something is behind me.
-
I don't really have a phobia but I have an obsession.
I don't think it's enough to be considered OCD but I have this obsession with my bed having to be clean. I absolutely can't stand sleeping in it without having showered before. Plus, I can't let people sit on my bed without cringing. It used to be so bad that I couldn't let anyone in my room without covering my bed with an extra blanket. It's especially bad with my pillow and under my covers. However, I've learned to deal with it better so it's not that severe anymore and I can make exceptions (like sleeping in my bed drunk or letting somebody else sleep in there), even if it's still uncomfortable when I think about it too much.
-
I need to aswer some older posts, so sorry to be OT, but I'll come back to phobias in a bit, k?
I thought your preferred name was Mama Whitebeard.
LOL yeah that was a joke I made at the time–could work I suppose.
I could dig Mom. Makes the internet feel more homey. :)
Awwww That's very sweet of you KI.
You could make it OP relevant and change your name to 'Big Mom'.
Although I like your current one fine, I.s.t.B.C.
I thought about Big Mom, but somehow it's too obvious, yk? And thanks, despite it's length, I like my current one too.
i vote for Mama Whitebeard.
but i think it's sweet that your daughter gave you your username! buster call survivor is fun to type anyhow.
Yeah, it was sweet of her to help me think up a good one. That's a good deal why I like it so much. She's a member here too, but posts very seldom, actually. But she hears all about you guys from me, so is still in the know about everything that I know.
But I talked to her and she's ok with a switch if I want. Momma Whitebeard does seem fun…
But enough about my silly nick stuff. I'll be back with a few phobia stories, if it manages to remain the topic while I'm gone, lol. In the meantime...
@Bobjr:That's why I plan to blow up the Moon…
But… It's been done. :ninja:

Change it to "I survived the buster call and all I got was this crappy t-shirt".
Oh right, shorter.
Yours is a good name that doesn't need changing anyway, distinctive and a change from the generic monkeyDacebeard we normally get around here.

LOL–Funny you should say that--that was the joke around here at our house for a bit, actually.
H'ok. I do like my nick, Darkstorm says its original, that's nice, and it has sentimental value for me, so I think I will keep it as is. Thanks for all the warm replies and comments (Random sappy moment---Aww, I love you guys!) Sorry for any inconvenience. Just use a short version if ya feel the need.
So, on to phobias. I have one. It's the most horrible, terrifying... Like some thing is... I dunno... It's like a nightmare--it's... (sigh) I can't look too long, so I'll put it in spoilers. Only look if you are very strong. I don't want to pass my phobia on to others. Try not to scream if you look. You have been warned.
! One Piece taking a break. It's harsh, but someone had to say it
Ok, now that that's out of the way, I can tell you that I feel nothing but sympathy for people with phobias. I bet we all have something that gives us the heeby jeebies, but real phobias are tough. My son suddenly developed, at the age of 5 or 6) a serious anxiety/phobia around fire in public places, especially theatres. (And no, he has never been in a fire anywhere at any time, nor does he know anyone who has) It stopped him from attending birthday parties if they were held at movie theatres, it made it really difficult for him to go shopping for a while, but we did a lot of stuff to work on it, and now, though he feels nervous when he first gets there before the movie starts, he can sit and enjoy a movie all the way through, so happy ending.
He had a phobia around flying too (nope–never had a problem while flying, nor knew anyone who did) We had to take field trips to the local airport for a while, in gradual increments--first we only got as far as the parking lot, then to the front of the building, then inside, then watched the planes taking off and landing. Finally he was able to take a flight and actually anjoy it.
Phobias can be a bitch, and I admire anyone who gets a handle on theirs.
-
I have a phobia of dark water.
You know, that water in oceans and lakes a couple hundred metres away from shore?
I can't stand diving in it, I always feel like I'll get my head bitten off by a shark when I do.Also, spiders. I don't mind those small spiders you'd normally find in homes but if I saw a big hairy one I'd flip out.

Wow, that's quite good of you to do that.
I don't know many parents who would go to such lengths.
If I ever expressed a phobio like that, my parents would simply say "Don't be ridiculous" and drag me on the plane straight away the next time we went on a trip.
