@JERK:
Dragonball had tons of filler and most of it was really horrible.

Dragon Ball 'Z' Kai?
Didn't know they were pulling that one.But I guess since It's best known over this side as 'Ball', 'Z' then 'GT' - You atleast have a
reason for why they did it. Still a little bit stupid, assuming their audience won't know what it is.
Kinda late on that one. FUNi had to do it and it's within good reason; to this day, there are STILL people who ask what "Dragon Ball Kai" is and assume it's an all new show.
LOL Goku and Piccolo go to driving school.
Dragon Ball, not Dragon Ball Z. And even that episode doesn't make up for the god awful filler in Z, like the Garlic Jr. arc.
Well at least they did a good job on translating the opening. Really like it
gkWdCU6m71A
This is the opening used for the DVDs/Blu-rays, whereas the one on TV is shortened and sung by Vic (video release is sung by Sean Schemmel).
I prefer Vic's tbh. It's nice to have Sean singing since it's sort of like Goku.
But he's not really a singer. And they've heavily modulated it.
Sean's version is terrible. The autotuning doesn't help either.
I'd love it if Vic could do the full Dragon Soul for the uncut version once it reaches the Cell arc.
LOL Goku and Piccolo go to driving school.
That filler was actually pretty fun.
Sure it had a contradiction with Piccolo eating, when its revealed Namekians don't eat but still pretty fun.
I think what he means is around the line of FAKE PLANET NAMEK.
Sean isn't a singer or a voice actor, in fact why does he have a mouth.

Plus, you know, Dragon Ball Kai only reworks the episodes of what was earlier known as "Dragon ball Z", nothing else. The name change makes sense.
Exactly.
And regarding the opening, there's a fan-made duet version between the two that turned out really well.

That was actually pretty good, should have been used on the DVD and Blu-ray
So, remember that one page I linked to earlier? Daizex's "There is No OVA!" page? It has now been rewritten. With exclusive looks into the production of Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans!! Whee, it's an animatic, Charlie Brown!

Dude lucked out by being friends of the incredibly low budget startup that was Funimation at the time.
Got 10+ years of continuous work badly voicing Goku for all the games and various redubs out of the deal.
I was saddened when I saw the first dubbed Kai episode yesterday morning. They really… haven't improved all that much in 10 years. They're more comfortable with their roles naturally, but... not improved or trying any harder for this run through.
^ Isnt' there some whole 'unspoken feud' or something between Sean and Funimation?
I recall that he would only voice act for them again for the role of Goku.
EDIT: It's spoken :
@Sean:
My experience in the early years at Funimation was miserable, because we were still using video tape and we had long breaks between takes, so I got cold between takes. Also, Funimation at the time (I think they have since changed) wasn't really interested in being terribly creative, as much as they were interested in getting it done. Cheap. Also, they didn't have a lot of room to be creative because the show had already been made in Japan so they had strict guidelines to follow. So I guess to answer the question, my fondest experience of working at Funimation was that it was the first place I really got to let out a lot of angst and work on the basic chops of voice acting technique, and Chris Sabat in particular put up with a lot from me to get what I needed to voice Goku. So for that I'm grateful. Goku will always be dearest to my heart. Animation Collective is a completely different ball of wax. Goku, was my start, but Animation Collective is where I really got to play. Sean Lahey (Voice Director) not only lets my imagination go wild, he encourages it. And one time I remember thanking Larry Schwartz for letting me do so many different characters for Animation Collective and he said "Are you kidding me? I write this stuff for you!" I was honored flattered and appreciated on a deep level. In fact, of all the companies I've worked for AC is the only company that expects me to come in and be creative, and supports it and they seem to value it. That's why I love working with them.
Ummmm….4Kids had nothing to do with that actually. Funi did that name change. The Funi dvds and Nicktoons broadcast use DBZKai too.
I didn't say they did.

That seems like a pretty ungrateful statement, since Funi wanting to do a cheap dub was the entire reason they hired "talent" like him in the first place.

lol
(sorry, but that WAS the only thing that entered my mind)

On the contrary, being someone who did not enjoy Z's dub at all over the years, I've found myself actually LIKING Kai's dub.
Burst Limit is really the first time where Sean sounds very close to Goku's true character, as opposed to what they had him do years ago and how he sounded. Piccolo's voice is also a noticeable change as before it used to sound so forced at being deep and harsh. Now it sounds like a sterner Zoro; which is close to Sabat's natural voice.
I can most definitely say the voices have GREATLY changed over the years. Compare Season 4 Z Vegeta to Dragon Ball Z Kai Vegeta. Season 4 was when Sabat started to give his own voice to Vegeta, rather than imitate Brian Drummond's take on Vegeta. While I will always prefer Ryo Horikawa's Vegeta, I will admit that Sabat's current Vegeta is at its best and far more tolerable than it was back in 1999 and a little after that.

So the actors started using their own natural voices for the characters.
They got more comfortable with them, as I said. Inevitable after 10 years and performing the same scenes a million times for all the redubs and games and such. And I'm used to them as the voices by now, naturally.
Doesn't mean they learned how to act or display range, subtly or nuance.
You lost some cool points, Robby. =/
Say what you want, but as good a Vegeta Sabat is, Drummond will always be my Vegeta. :ninja:
Scott McNeil can out-act anyone at Funimation, and do a wider variety of voices.
To say nothing of Ian Corlett and Brian Drummond, who only bring one voice to the table generally, but knows how to emote with it. (If you liked Drummond's Vegeta or not is entirely personal preference, but he's done dozens of other roles that aren't so over the top.)
I tend to not like either the Ocean or FUNimation casts in general. Sabat does far too many roles and McNeil (who also does far too many roles) tends to just ham it up. His screaming is pretty good, but that doesn't always make it worthwhile.
Beast Wars where McNeil did Waspinator, Ratrap, Dinobot and Silverbolt, and ofter had conversations between them, settled the matter. Man can act and put some subtlety in there.

That works there, where he literally crafts those characters, but within Dragon Ball's context (as I was speaking in my previous post) he rarely fits in well (or at the least, been given the chance to shine in an all-around capacity). Bare in my I hold a general disliking for McNeil in anime dubs, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 in particular.

Oh make no mistake, I though Scott and Ian were absolutely perfect for their roles. To this day, I still prefer Scott McNeil as Piccolo 100%.
But honestly, a good chunk of both sides of the fence have had massive weaknesses. Where FUNi had an awful voice for #19, #16 and Boo, the Ocean side had an awful voice for Tenshinhan, Kuririn and Freeza.
Actually, I can't think of a single voice from the original FUNi dub that I actually liked. Not necessarily because they weren't fitting, though that was the case for the most part, but mostly because they were all pretty terrible actors.
The Ocean cast had infinitely superior talent and even though some of the voices weren't appropriate for certain characters, at least they made it believable.
I'll take acting skill over a specific sound anyday.
Its like when hollywood cgi movies stunt cast celebrities to throw their name on their, and the celebs have no voice acting skill at all. Man I hate that.

I dunno. Listen to Seasons 4+ from Ocean. The voice direction was absolutely horrible and some of the actors were just plain bad. I think the fact that FUNi's crew has been gaining experience with other roles may have helped in a way.
Colleen's Gohan is fantastic and it may very well be owed to pretty much all the time she's spent playing as Luffy. Sonny's Kuririn sounds far less like a goofball and more like an actual person. His more serious roles in other anime may be what helped shape the right type of voice to use and how to go about it. If anything, his Kuririn sounds basically what Usopp if he weren't a chicken shit all the time.
But mind you, that's just me. I grew up hating the Dragon Ball franchise's dubs. Any DVD I owned was automatically set to Japanese audio, save for the original versions of the first three DBZ movies. I was hesitant about Dragon Ball Kai's dub and gave it a shot. This is the absolute first time I'm ever seeing the English dub and enjoying it completely, rather than small bits for various reasons.
Where as with the Ocean dub, I only approved of certain voices and the later dub I couldn't stand to watch it at all because of the incorrect/awful writing, the terrible music and some of the hokey acting. But Dragon Ball Kai has apparently managed to be more good than bad in English for me. It's actually pretty something to be actually watching an accurate representation of the series in English done in an enjoyable way.
well last night dbz kept me up late
was flipping channels while laying in bed and saw on nicktoons that it was like 2 hours straight of dbz kai. yet NO COMMERCIALS, thus each episode quickly fit into 15 minutes, thus meaning 8 episodes in 2 hours. was sweet
I never really liked the Ocean cast. I remember when I was watching as a kid I eventually noticed a voice change after a certain episode. I would always look forward to when the voices would change, around episode 53 I think. I always vastly prefered FUNi's voices. Ocean's just rubbed me the wrong way.
If I'm honest. I mean I was a kid at the time, so it was probably just oblivious stupidity on my part, but I never
really noticed a difference in some of the voices. I thought the Krillin and Goku's vocies sounded really similar.

Yeah, I'm aware that they improved a lot over the years, but my comment refers to the initial runs of both since the Ocean cast dub became an entirely different production after the first 53 episodes as well.
I'm actually pretty interested in watching FUNi's dub of Kai since what I've heard of Clinkenbeard's Gohan has been good and I wanted to see what they could do by finally trying to be faithful to the original material. I haven't really gotten the chance though and I'm always a little reluctant because I know that no matter how much better it is, it'll always kind of suck because Sean Schemmel is STILL voicing Gokuh. Call it a minor gripe, but I mean, he is the main character and my favorite character.
Come to think of it, I've never really had anything against Sonny Strait even though he was as horrible as anyone to begin with. He probably improved the most and no matter how bad he was, it was always kind of funny and genuine somehow(?) I dunno.
Really, Kai is the closest thing we will ever get to a perfect Dub of this story.
Granted, there are still a few things that hold it back from being perfect. Them ignoring Son's Family name (and after they used it in Burst Limit?…) "Tri-Beam", "Korin", "King Kai", "Tien Shinhan" etc really make it awkward, but the overall script, new actors, and matured (talent of the) voices of the returning actors REALLY make this dub shine.
It doesn't feel like they're trying to dumb it down for the poor stupid weak-minded American kiddies anymore. The material is treated with respect, and I've yet to have a moment where I just blatantly think "The fuck!? He'd NEVER say that!"
New Freeza ALONE is enough to make me want to find Chris Sabat and kiss him.
Yes, Ayres' Freeza is far-and-above easily the best thing about the new dub.

what's Korin supposed to be called? :wassat:
And dub Goku still doesn't talk how Goku is supposed to. He still sounds like a "super hero". It bugs me a lot honestly.
They've improved a lot. I'm impressed, but it's more of a "I'm impressed you guys didn't completely fuck this up" than a "I'm impressed! This is awesome!"
but I'm just picky anyway, I like my subs to generally match what the dub is saying. I don't know why, but when I see about 3 or 4 lines different in an episode, I feel absolutely betrayed.
(Granted I'm still getting Kai on DVD)
what's Korin supposed to be called? :wassat:
In the Manga he's called Karin. They changed it since Karin was a pun on a japanese food,
to Korin to pun on Corn. So to be fair to them, they're only trying to localise the joke.

Are you trying to suggest Funi had the slightest clue the names were supposed to be puns in the first place?
And how the hell is "Korin" a pun on corn? Where did you even get that from?

Dude are you serious? Say Korin fast. :wassat:
But we are talking about the same people who named "Blooma" Bulma, "Kurilin" "Krillin" which completely remove their Japanese puns.
I don't think they care.
Are you trying to suggest Funi had the slightest clue the names were supposed to be puns in the first place?
As professional anime translators and dubbers (who do this to earn a living) - Yes, I am.
To even suggest that after all the dubs, and re-dubs, and releases and re-releases that
FUNI haven't quite noticed that people in Dragonball are named after food a lot, is mad.
And how the hell is "Korin" a pun on corn? Where did you even get that from?
I dont get ANY sort of superhero vibe from Sean at all anymore. I just feel a sometimes forced manchild. Hes not Superman Goku anymore.
Is Burst Limit a good game? I never bought that one.
From Herms' Name Pun Round-up:
Karin-sama
Named for かりん糖/karintou, a deep-fried Japanese snack. “Tower” in Japanese is 塔/tou, and so the Karin Tower is カリン塔/Karin-tou, a homonym for the candy. Karin himself is then simply named after his tower.
Toriyama Explanation: “This was taken from the Karin Tower (from the karintou snack); since he’s the tower’s owner he’s named Karin. ” [DBF]
Source Spelling:: かりんとう (かりん糖; 花林糖)/karintou
Name Spelling: カリン/Karin
カリン塔/Karin-Tou
So yes, FUNimation still gets it wrong.
Why do people rag on the Buu saga so much?
Burst Limit is meh. Drama pieces are really nice cutscenes in the game but most of the time they are dumb and make no sense unless your in a main series fight like Goku vs Freeza.
Its Budokai 3 with HD graphics. Wait let me try again, it tries to be Budokai 3. Its not that good ill just put it like that.
@Yuugi's:
So yes, FUNimation still gets it wrong.
They didn't get it wrong. They simply localised the joke to a something we would understand
that still kept the fact it was a food-related pun. Japanese food-related pun. English food-related pun.
What do you think they should have called him instead?
Ok. I guess if I have some extra money I'll buy a used copy at my local store.
its pretty much $20.00 used, so if your just craving some DBZ badly, get it.
If you looking for a fun fighting game, meh its below average imo.

They changed his name and the pun behind it. That is 'getting it wrong'.

The pun is that he is named after a food. Suggest a better version that keeps the original pun, other than Korin/Corn.

Leaving his name alone, of course.
