I get the feeling everyone saying that was raised on Naruto and is under the delusion that the timeskip before the Saiyan arc somehow ruined Dragonball (imo Cell arc is where DB went bad, but Buu kinda fixed things).There're plenty of examples of good timeskips in comics and literature, it's just that everyone's so hung up on the bad ones done by crappy authors, but is Oda a crappy author? Do you really believe he'll screw things up?

I think it's b/c so many people have such a love for this manga that we have such a big fear. I say let us express our worries. and argh….dbz.................

Is the message in the tattoo? Because unless it was reported in the news report what it said, that photo angle is too cut off to be sure the crew will get the message. Rayleigh tells Luffy that they'd understand if they read the article, (Does Rayleigh know the reporter? Haki powers?) and sure enough the crew all seems to get it as they read. I'm guessing there's something from the article we haven't seen yet that will make sense when Oda reveals, but I can't for the life of me guess what it will be or what the timeskip length will be.

I do think, as I've seen others mention, that Luffy's message was really about Luffy, probably apologizing to the crew that he wasn't strong enough to protect them and would have to get stronger before he enters the New World (however long that's going to be?) After all, the whole Luffy arc started and ended with Luffy failing to protect those closest to him. Of course the crew, wanting to be strong for their captain, are inspired to take advantage of the powerup islands Kuma sent them to, and they wait for Luffy's needed time, or next signal, or whatever to meet up. Rayleigh likely knows that the crew were sent to powerup, but Luffy doesn't neccessarily need to know. Luffy will just be focused on getting stronger and believe in his crew to come back at the appropriate time.

So anyway, I see the next chapters going like this:
596 - 4 more crew members (Chopper and Sanji each got 4 pages)
597 - Last 2, Back to Luffy, message revealed…
598 - The world turns...

months/years later, the crew unites!

600 - To the New World!
601 - Fishman Island?!?

I think a lot of people, myself included, do not have a lot of variety in the usage of time skips in a graphic medium such as comic books. People have recommended some where they did a great job like Beserk and Akira as examples of it doing well. But a lot more of the current readership is familiar with Naruto or DB, which both frankly had less than stellar motives or results.

Regardless of what was done in the past Oda is a different writer than the others and we should judge his work on his own merits. Over the past few weeks he has gone to great lengths to set up the condition of the supernova's, the political climate of the WG, and a world of general disaray with the death of Whitebeard. If he uses a timeskip so we can basically skip a training arc, then I think it is more than fine, training arcs are kind of boring space fillers. All his work in telling the story in the past two chapters has helped me to realize that he if he does a timeskip (which it is extremely obvious at this point) then it will be for the best I suppose.

Not only is the message itself bang on target but the sneaky way its delivered makes it fit perfectly into why only the crew would understand. The multi layered approach to a simple message would make sense since its Ray who came up with it anyway.

I think most people on this forum have been wondering if the message was hidden in words and gestures but instead of looking at the whole picture people have been focusing on single aspects like the tatoo.

Heck in the end, it might be that the tattoo WAS the only important part, but till then your theory is the best explanation so far.

Well this whole tatoo ordeal is kind of a problem… It might make more sense if you think about it when they're saying "something Luffy wouldn't do" but I still think a tatoo shouldn't be a big deal, he could be doing the same thing Ace did in his and Sabo's honor... but eh if it is "3D2Y" I was completely wrong and I hope its not a permanent tatoo :/

Edit: Wait, the WG took the 16 bell rings as a declaration of war, (Yes I know about that whole old year/new year celebration but the point here is WG took that as a declaration of war) that is defenetly something Luffy wouldn't do: Start a war without a reason. Ray must of known about this and if the whole pun idea is correct it would make the number 16 is just an inconvenient coincidence... My brain is viciously spinning now.. NEED. ANSWER. WAITING. DB as JERK DISEASE points out, used time skips with motive, to show a completely different story arc. As you say every dragonball time skip completly changed the story. Every time the main characters multiplied thier power several times and rapidly gained parity with the bad guys who were twiddling thier thumbs i guess.

Would be a lot quicker, because zorro would never find the way to SA. & till HawkEye reached Zorro within days, it could be a week or two to collect em all. A year or the end of the year would be far to long.

Everyone should remember who writes this manga. Remember this is a man who for all intents and purposes has most if not all of the storyline ALREADY planned out. A man who foreshadows events and characters that take their place years later. To suggest that he doesn't have a wonderful plan for the story timeskip or not is ludicrous. Remember this is not something made necessary by outside influences like falling sales or whatever, its part of a larger plan. Whatever happens its going to be good.

I have complete faith in Oda's ability to handle the now obviously fast approaching time skip, and look forward to what he did–my feeling is purely selfish. I sort of came to think of the SHs as personal friends, and I care about them deeply, and I "don't wanna miss a day," even if it's boring. I know it's foolish and silly and not rational--that boring stuff would lose a ton of readers and not be good for the manga's future--and I am not fighting to time skip–just wish I were there with them, so to speak, instead of out here waiting for word--it's like waiting outside a hospital room while someone you care about undergoes some life saving procedure. It's agonizing, even though I am sure that we have the best Doctor on the planet for this condition, and it will be a happy outcome.

Now that you put it that way I can understand it easier, it reminds me back at alabasta arc when they had the double mark to distinguish themselves from the Mr.2. They didn't reveal until later flashback Zoro came up with that idea before hand. So yea they might just do something like this for the message.

The first significant time skip I recall was between Picollo and Picollo jr., then another one between Picollo jr. and Saiyin saga. It has been a year since I have read the manga so my memory may be shady. In my opinion though I felt the quality of the manga declined with the start of the picollo saga, and continued on after that. Just my opinion. I loved the original arc, training with Roshi, the first martial arts tournamnet, the Red ribbon army, the battle with Roshi's sister for information, the tourney with Tien etc. One of my favorite parts of any manga has to be when Goku climbed that tower up to the cat person to get stronger, it was a very cool scene and the revelation about the differences in his character and Roshi's was very cool (I mean it was obvious, but it helped to show us how "innocent" Goku was). The picollo sagas were fun sure, but they were a strong indication of what the remaining 60 percent of the story would entail. The saiyin saga brought us space monkeys and space lizards, and evil intergalatic empires that existed despite the fact that they seemed to have some sadistic pleasure in just murdering people. I will be honest to say my favorite parts of the manga after that dealt with the afterlife portions more than the actual batttles, but that is just me.

Anyways I am sure you will assume I have not actually read the manga since that is what you always seem to assume when someone dares to say that Dragonball was flawed, but I did in fact and it was a simple and flawed tale. Regardless of that it is not only the most popular manga of all time (to my knowledge) it is also the most popular anime of all time, I believe it opened up western markets to a whole slew of new material. It deserves its props as a franchise and an inspiration to manga creators today.

Oda definitely won't depict it as she want. That is why it is called time-skip. However that's very cute and honest of her, and appreciate the characters like real life human. She is still sane enough though. And that is the type of reader that I would want the most as a mangaka.

A reader that care so much about characterization, plot-devices, story-telling technique, and other professional stuff, instead of just enjoying the manga as an entertainment, but have no intention of becoming a story-teller, is what I would call a nerd.

Seeing the characters like real life human is great, and that's what every authors intend to create. But i think it went a little too far in I survived the Buster call's case.
My last post was a bit clumsy, and didn't reveal what I truly meant. Oda would never skip interesting part of the manga as some other author might do, because One Piece is above all a comics for children. What is not shown is irrelevant, and I think we shouldn't bother too much about that.

(Sigh) I just posted a "Yada!" post about the time skip, then added some stuff to give my completely unreasonable "yada" some context.

Of course I understand they are fictional characters–of course Sea is right (Sorry, Sea, to have put you to the trouble of having to defend my honor, lol!) It was meant to be partially in jest, as in the jest part was the part where it went too far--I was laughing at myself for being so silly and nervous about the time skip for no rational reason and taking it to extremes in my joke because it was so irrational. Oda is an excellent writer who has never given us reason to doubt his ability to pull the story along, but I'm still nervous about it–as are many of you, I thought. On the other side of said skip, all such stuff will dissipate like magic I'm sure.

To be absolutely clear, I do not sit in my room navel gazing and thinking about spending my time in Oda's fictional world with the SHs.

I suppose I should have explained myself more, since this is the internet and one never knows who the people here are, and I am relatively new here so you don't know me or my sense of humor, or lack or same, such as it is, and some things just do not translate well to writing.
