Funniest thing I've read all day. Although I'm only 1 hour through the day over here….

If it is so unlike luffy then why will Chopper yell "Luffy, Why Again?!!". I am not a japanese man, but that "unlike" can be "something different" or "weird" and is not necessarily characterwise but moment or looks.

Chopper was saying something that was more of a "What are you doing!?" type of thing but it could also mean "Why again?" but I don't remember exactly.(Damn me and my non-Japanese heritage!) But by going with the "Why again?" it means that he went back to Marineford not that he made a funeral for his brother which wouldn't even make sense anyway because there's no way that you would have a reaction like that. If he were to host a funeral and it were to be reported it probably wouldn't get a reaction like that, even from Chopper.

As inconvenient as it is, it might still come as effective in luffy's case. Actions are way too confusing and majority of luffy's crew are simpletons. If it is just the action, I might have get it by now. Words, in this case, symbols are more reliable.

Or we could all be in the Zoro mindset and just be completely oblivious to it (which I think we all are myself included). And I'm pretty sure that the message is somewhere in the actions done in their time in Marineford. It has to be in the article somewhere. It's just that the focus was all on the bells and the different interpretations of different sides. The tattoo looks like Luffy just paying his respect for Ace and that's it. If it were a message, what would be the point in getting the tattoo in the first place? Why not just bring something that would be more noticeable for the crew instead of there being a chance of it not even showing up in the first place?

To me, it is actually genius. Bad storytelling happens on Naruto not on One Piece. Do you honestly believe that all the strawhat crew cares about marine customs and ceremonies? The more obvious thing for them is the sudden tattoo, while the marines will be busy thinking about the ringing of the bell, the circling around marineford, etc, because they want to think deep. They don't know that they are dealing about luffy, who has no interest on symbolisms. They won't give a FF about the tattoo since almost everyone can get tattoo anyday they want to.

They gambled or Rayleigh is really a great tactical genius that he foresees many reporters there, the likelihood of Luffy getting his picture taken, and being posted with the tattoo. IRL, stories like this, especially when there are media presence will have many pictures inside with the subject seen on different angles.

If it were the tattoo why would he say this or anything similar to this?

As I said previously, "something quite unlike" might actually be "something different from" or "something weird" which is not necessarily characterwise but looks or moment.

Again, if it's a real tattoo, would it be dumb to see it STILL after they got back together? we will STILL see it while they are sailing in new world? generally we will still see it from now on until one piece ends? Oda is not dumb to put a real tattoo on his main character that will serve it's purpose for just a matter of time.

I think that luffy attacking marineford to do his ritual mourning Ace's death shows he's ok now and getting over it. Ray and Jimbei being with him also shows that he's in good care and waiting for them with rayleigh if they want to go. They were all in a hurry, prioritizing on going to help luffy but now the news paper shows he doesnt need help. The 16 bells means a new age I think, and that when they come back to be ready to kick some ass.

now the crew will take their time getting to luffy, like zoro (if he ever gets it) will train some more instead of just leaving, robin will see what the Rev Army wants and maybe meet dragon, etc etc..nami was mad coz she was all crying and worrying turns out he's fine and she got the town pissed at her for nothing xD

There's still more to it since Nami says he was being selfish, and Zoro isn't getting it, but yes. It accomplishes all of that. Good post.

You completely missed my point. I'm saying it's bad storytelling if the crew can look at the exact same picture that we're looking at and somehow make out the letters. If Oda wanted the message in there, he should have shown the tattoo clearly. Otherwise, I call bull on it. If the message really is in the tattoo, Chopper should be thinking it says "3D2Y" while Nami thinks it's "SA2W."

We were given a couple of different interpretations for the bells and ceremony. There's likely to be another meaning, more personal to the SHs (perhaps the number 16?) The bells don't necessarily have to have anything to do with the marine tradition. Since Oda went to the trouble of giving us two different interpretations, the message most likely has to do with the bells. Also, it's one thing that is guaranteed to be reported.

No. We nearly saw every important characters that are no strawhat. There are only Bonney, Drake, Apoo and probably Law left. We might also see Buggy again, but that's not enough to make a full chapter. So, of course we are goning to see the SH again in the next chapter.

As for the message what if Rayleigh was saying Luffy's uncharacteristic actions were "the key" to getting his crew's fullest attention? To tell them there was a deeper meaning than what was read in the paper? The crew reads the paper and say this isn't like Luffy. This is somebody else's plan. Maybe he's trying to tell us something. Maybe there's a hidden message. His uncharacteristic actions make the crew think deeper and look for something no one else would know about (this is what Zoro is doing).

In saying this, his uncharacteristic actions aren't the message. His uncharacteristic actions are just the signal flare to his crew to tell them "Hey there's something else, look deeper!" No one else would know Luffy wouldn't "normally" do this so they don't get that signal flare. Just a thought.

Guys, Raftel isn't just some island that anyone can sail to. Getting there is a puzzle, not a race. If it weren't, scores of pirates would have already made it there by now. Just look at Whitebeard. He had been patrolling the seas for decades, and even in his old age, he had no idea where Raftel was.

I'm not saying that the time skip will be for a period of time longer than 1 year (I think it will be even shorter), but I am saying that even if it were a long time skip, it wouldn't matter in the larger scheme of things; the other supernovas wouldn't be any closer to Raftel.

The fact that it's "at the end of the Grandline" doesn't mean you get there faster by racing there. There are a limitless number of pirates who sail the grand line and inhabit the New World. Many of them are pirates strong enough to sail without constant safety concerns (such as the yonkou). There is no doubt that Shanks, Whitebeard, or any other powerful pirate could have sailed to the end of the grandline if he/she wanted to, and most likely all of them probably have. That doesn't mean they found Raftel.

Yeah, but you think the strongest man in the world who has sailed the seas for decades wouldn't know where an island is? The fact that he "had no interest" in the island is because he was described as a pirate not interested in treasure. It doesn't change the fact that his ignorance of the island's location tells us he didn't know where it was.

Lol! Look at this thread. Oda did a great job. The fact is that none of us can be sure what the real deal is. Oda didn’t give us all the information to solve the problem. We can just speculate and create some theories.

Saying that the "tattoo"(I think is only temporary) isn’t part of the message is probably wrong. I say probably, because Luffy, Jimbei and Ray can’t be sure that the tattoo will be 100% in the picture. But they know there are a lot of photographers and the chances are really good that the tattoo will be in the picture. Yeah, we (the Strawhats too) can’t read it clearly, but what if this isn’t the only picture in the news? Again, “Oda didn’t give us all the information to solve the problem”, he will show us in the next chapter or when they reunite. But is wrong to say “I’m 100% sure that the tattoo doesn’t have anything to do with the message”. Another thing to think about, if the tattoo isn’t part of the message, why would Oda show us the tattoo now? Why not later? Like Nami. It would make more sense.

Saying that only the tattoo (and nothing else) is the message is also wrong. I agree that all the actions Luffy has done can be only a red herring. Well, actually I think it is, but is not only that. The whole action was too detailed. There is a lot of information there. At least Luffy trying to say “Don’t worry, I’m fine” or a tribute to Whitebeard and his crew.

Saying the message means “go to somewhere and we will meet there” is really dumb. They have the vivre card. It is a lot better. Such a code can be broken, the vivre card not. If they want to reunite somewhere else, they would send a message to the Fish Riders, not the crew.

The most important thing to do is to analyze what Luffy wants.

He wants to get stronger so he can protect the ones he loves and then reunite, he wants that the crew know he is ok. To get stronger he will need time. That is IMO the most important message he is trying to send. The place of the reunion is the Sunny (Ray’s VC), the crew need just to know when.

To a pirate, a lot of time alone is dangerous. Especially dangerous if you are the son of the most wanted man in the world and pissed the WG a lot of times. But the whole action shows the crew that he is not alone at the moment. Two really strong men are with him. They don’t need to worry. He is also “ok” with the lost of his brother. For me this is the most important information he is trying to send with the funeral thing.

And yes, my analyze lead to a time skip. It makes sense to put one at this point of the story. I don’t like it, but I don’t see another way.

And if we go that way, the “tattoo theory” that makes more sense at the moment is the one with 3D2Y. We need to remember that the crew wanted to separate before they met Sentomaru, Kizaru and Kuma. 3 days was the time they wanted to reunite originally. Because of the defeat this plan didn’t work. Now he wants to make another. Work good enough for me.

Again, I think we don’t have all the information we need to solve the problem. But with the information we have, this is the best answer in my opinion.

This page basically says that you need in depth knowledge of the poneglyphs and the ability to translate them in order to reach Raftel (Laveteru). Nico Robin is the only person that we know of in the entire One Piece universe still alive who knows how to read the ancient language (the "light of revolution" as the revolutionaries call her), and she happens to be a member of Luffy's crew.

So my point, which you ignored, is that it doesn't matter how much other pirates – be they other supernovas or whatever -- want one piece; even if they traverse farther down the grand line than the strawhats, that doesn't bring them any closer to Raftel.

Raftel can't be reached by a normal guy for sure, but as it lies at the end of Grand line, there is a race of some sort to reach it. Luffy would simply be too much behind his main rivals, if he stayed with Rayleigh for that long. Yonkou isn't a title. It's what you call the top four pirates.

Itt's ridiculous to say it would be bad storytelling when we've had 20 years of pirates going into New World and no one crossing any sort of finish line.

Atleast what WB did was just simply ensure that the local population would survive by ruling the area itself. Kaidou and BigMom might be different cases, but most likely they've run into some sort of trouble while trying to reach Raftel themselves, and thus have decided just to live in the New World, ruling few islands at the same time. Yonkou aren't just four strong pirate crews travelling on the seas of the New world. Otherwise Kaidou wouldn't have had so much interest in stopping Shanks and his crew. If he really tried to reach Raftel like the Supernova, Luffy and BB are trying, he would've just laughed that a strong competitor and an obstacle is doing something else.

We've had 20 years of pirates going into the New World without anyone reaching Raftel mainly because of the Yonkou, I believe, as the Yonkou have stopped any "new" pirates, intruding their own regions, thus stopping the progress of other pirates.

Yonkou means "Four Emperor", the name would be pointless if it was just the strongest pirate, they must rule over something (fleet, territories).

Why would the habitants of the islands act according to what they say if they wouldn't rule the areas and patrol them regularly. They could just live normal lives and put up an act, if one of the "Yonkou" would appear. And moreover, we assume that the ultimate goal of every pirate, including the Yonkou, is to reach Raftel and find One Piece. If that'd be the case, why on earth would Kaidou stop Shanks from going into the war. He would be glad that a major obstacle is gone and would certainly go for the prize, not try to stop one of his rivals from going into a war that could end this rival's life.

so unless brook found out every little detail of all of their adventures then it hard to imagine its something like "remember in skypiea when we danced with the wolves while drinking some alcoholic plant" Yea this tatto and bell ringing means that we need to ect.

its not going to be some insane connection that is like "OMG, amazing" The strawhats aren't all sherlok holmes and also don't all have same experiences.

so really shoudl be thinking of stuff post thriller bark, if i was to guess most likely some hidden meaning in the rayleigh talking after auction. They would have heard stuff there that no one else in the world would know but them.

Still not convinced the tattoo/armband is the message (my eariler post about the lack of logic for them to use the arm writing still stands as far as I'm concerned), but if it is, maybe the cross or "X" isn't meant to cross something out or negate something, but rather to stand for something, like the "X" in Alabasta did…
