Why did you just post examples of before Guts getting used to be around people? He clearly becomes attached to them as time goes on. After the Eclipse, it's pretty much stated that he travels alone because he doesn't want anyone to get involved in his mess.

I think its you who needs to read the arc more carefully. You take things too literally and accept what you see at face value; Berserk is deeper than that.
I agree. But I believe it's you who's taking things too literally. There's a reason why Guts surrounded himself with these people. They're his family, and he needs his family. To survive, to preserve his sanity and to have something worth fighting for, so he can surpass and defeat Griffith. Guts has his family, while Griffith has no one.
-
Why did you just post examples of before Guts getting used to be around people?
Only one of those examples is from right after he joined, actually. The one where he is on the hill is after he saves Casca and kills 100 guys, so very near the end of his stay; same for when he claims he is just a "temporary visitor."
After the Eclipse, it's pretty much stated that he travels alone because he doesn't want anyone to get involved in his mess.
Yeah, I agree. I never claimed he doesn't like other people or is cold-hearted; Guts is clearly a genuinely nice guy who has had some terrible shit happen to him. But his solution to the problem is isolation; a clear sign that at his core he is a loner.
-
@Green:

No man, I was only arguing that in the Golden Age, Guts was a loner, and that fundamentally he was isolationist. I completely agree with you here, excellent analysis. Guts has changed and is changing with the more recent volumes; Griffith will lose in the end because he chose to betray everyone. This is indeed the direction that manga is headed, and it's simply not one I like. Just a personal opinion.
-
I actually like the idea of guts going from being isolated to being surrounded with comrades
-
I guess its just that I don't really like the new characters. The witch girl is cool, but the obnoxious ex-church girl and her guard guy annoy me. And the little kid? Ugh.
They really aren't that bad, but Guts is just so much more awesome…
-
Even the most badass of men need help when going against Gods.
=\
Whats Kratos got to do with this?
-
I think its you who needs to read the arc more carefully.
Anyone who actually thinks Miura is going to conclude a story with I LIKE BE ALONE is straight retarded.
Maybe it gets your pussy wet at how surly and ruggedly self sufficient Gutts can be, but it's a shit character that actually works that way. Which Gutts is not.
You take things too literally and accept what you see at face value; Berserk is deeper than that.
lol at "Gutts being loner" being deep.
You aren't very smart are you.
Just because Guts is around people during the Golden Age arc doesn't mean that he isn't isolated. Guts clearly is uncomfortable being around so many people, detaching himself whenever he can. His natural state is one of isolation: an emotional and social isolation from those around him, that manifests itself in the form of physical isolation several times:
Stop trying to make NAW HE COOL AND BADASS AND NO HAVE ABILITY TO BE WITH PERSONS sound like a senior thesis paper.
Your arguement is utterly destroyed in Volume 12 or by any number of other scenes that BADARSE GAR junkies who don't want to acknowledge that Gutts is a 3 dimensional character try to ignore.
Bam.
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+12&page=34This is the ultimate conclusion of the Golden Age, and the fact that you didn't get it means the full tragedy of the Eclipse went straight over your head, which means the full tragedy of pretty much every chapter since has gone straight over your head.
And the entire concept of the black swordsman is put down in the chapters when Gutts is back at Godo's house right before the Holy Tower arc.
The REAL aberration occurs when Griffith forces Guts to join the band by besting him. Guts even describes himself as a "temporary visitor":
Yeah except this.
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+12&page=34And Griffith forcing Gutts into the Hawks is no more an abberation then a shy kid being made to go to his first party by his buddies, where he has fun and discovers new things about himself.
He charges out on his own in battle, and he prefers to fight on his own:
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+07&page=47
Gutts still charges out alone most of the time. But he was always still in the context of a team. What you're saying about how he fought with the Hawks is like saying Luffy is a loner because he always does the same.
But both are STILL within the armies/crews.In fact, he leaves the Band of the Hawk so he can stand on his own, without being in the shadow of Griffith's dream. He wants to shape his own destiny, with his own sword!
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+12&page=34
I can repost this page all day. We'll see how long it takes until you get it.
What I have a problem with in the newer story is the whole "Let's have Guts learn to trust and be around people" theme.
THATS EXACTLY WHAT THE GOLDEN AGE WAS ABOUT
I understand that it is in place so that the protagonist can get over Griffith's enormous betrayal, but it's not my cup of tea.
Why? Because you're a emotionally juvenile clown who thinks its NOT COOL OMG WHY CANT HE GRUNT AND GLARE IN DA SHADOWS AGAIN!!! MAMA THIS COMIC BOOK IS GAY!!!!! WAWWWWWWW
Don't ever even THINK of lecturing or talking down to me about subtext when you can't even follow this shit.

Looking back that those old chapters of Berserk really bought back memories. The art grows with you to a point you don't notice any difference until you look back. It's kinda like growing up with brothers or sisters.

Look, Jerk Disease, if you intend to insult and argue with a completely retarded and fabricated caricature of my post then clearly we have nothing to discuss. I think you make some good points, but I can't respect the way you randomly attack the person instead of his argument. Berserk is a great manga partially because it can spark interesting debate, not because it can insight insipid namecalling: that's what rags like Bleach are for.

I haven't changed a single word you wierdo.
then clearly we have nothing to discuss.
So you're making a 100% false accusation of me altering your awful post, so you can look not like a pussy for running away from the fire.
Yeah, did you actually think we wouldn't know exactly what you're doing?
I think you make some good points, but I can't respect the way you randomly attack the person instead of his argument.
I haven't done that at all you idiot.
Learn what an Ad Hominem actually is before you try to awkwardly use it.Berserk is a great manga partially because it can spark interesting debate, not because it can insight insipid namecalling: that's what rags like Bleach are for.
Make a real rebuttal or shut up, don't give me this dribble.

@JERK:
…so you can look not like a pussy for running away from the fire.
Your metaphor is lacking; allow me to fill you in on the situation. In this case I'm keeping a cool head and walking away from a hot-tempered, obnoxious child that prefers obscenities, hypocritical tirades and accusatory drivel to reason and understanding.
Good thing this forum has ignore lists, huh? Maybe I'll take you off my list one day to see if you have learned to argue like a big boy.

That wasn't a metaphor.
In this case I'm keeping a cool head and walking away from a hot-tempered, obnoxious child that prefers obscenities, hypocritical tirades and accusatory drivel to reason and understanding.
No actually I'm providing all the arguments you claim to be pining for and more, but your fragile babby sensibilities that apparently can't withstand wrestling videos and mean words is too busy blubbering like a fat woman at Titanic to see anything but what you wish.
Good thing this forum has ignore lists, huh? Maybe I'll take you off my list one day to see if you have learned to argue like a big boy.
The problem with the ignore list is everyone else will still be shitting on your posts. Too bad we don't live in a utopia where toddler ass shit posters like you can't protect every inch of text you put on from people trying to knock some sense into you're thick skulls.

You guys went berserk for a moment there…
The way I see it is that Gut's fate has always been decided, he is supposed to be a loner, he is cursed since childbirth and brings disaster wherever he comes... he realizes this.
However one of humans most important drives is that of acceptance, a feeling of belonging. After the eclipse he realizes that he was happy in the band of the hawks and that he gave it all up foolishly. Now that he has new companion he is not going make the same mistake. -
Hmmm… somehow JERK DISEASE's responses lacks the "soul factor" without his/her Top Cat avatar.
Who is that black guy in JERK D's ava btw?

I used to keep up with Berserk, but the story moved so slowly that the wait would be maddening. So in 2004 I made the decision to stop reading Berserk and give it time for the story to move. The last big plot point that I had read had been the discovery of Elfhelm and a potential cure for Casca. Over the weekend (over SIX YEARS LATER) I decided that it was time to catch up with Berserk. I thought "Surely the gang has made it to Elfhelm by now". To my surprise Guts and his group really aren't that far away from where I left them. Lots of things happened while at the same time almost nothing has happened.
Everyone thinks that Berserk takes a long time to come out because of the spectacular artwork, but in reality Miura has the art done in two days. The real reason it takes so long is because Miura is trying to find the best way to troll us.
And people complain about the wait for Fishman island…
-
You're about to get raped by Robby.
Also you're really dumb if you don't think Griffith becoming the hero of humanity and merging planes of existence were important.
-

The best current art in the business takes a tad longer than two days son.

@JERK:

I agree that you would have to be an absolute moron if you didn't find Griffith's arc to be of extreme importance.
I was only speaking about Guts and his crew, NOT the world altering megashitstorm Griffith laid down! Upon rereading my post I see that I was very vague.
Griffith's story has certainly moved forward exponentially, but Guts and crew comparatively haven't really moved that much since I took a break six years ago. I'm just kind of surprised is all. Perhaps, in retrospect I should have listed exactly what I was talking about when I said "Lots of things happened while at the same time almost nothing has happened". Griffith's side of the story seems to be exploding with all sorts of events, while I get the feeling Guts and company have been treading water. All I'm trying to say is that I really thought some story related issues (dealing with Guts and crew) would have already been dealt with in my six year absence. I suppose that I'd repressed how slowly Berserk moves.
I'm not saying that this is a detriment to the series at all. Good stories take time, and I understand this. I've loved Berserk with all my heart since I saw the first four episodes of the anime back in '98. I'm sure I will continue to enjoy it for the rest of my life.
Airflow:
You do understand that I was obviously joking right? I meant to say that it only takes Miura a day to do lineart and forty-five minutes to ink an average chapter of Berserk. Also everyone knows that Noriaki Kubo is the hardest working man in the business. Kubo's backgrounds alone are simply to die for! -
Well Chapter 314 is there

nice chapter.
Gut's as always, is the man.
The phantom ship is cool.
-
Very strange ship :ermm: . Pretty cool chapter, though I wish the images were bigger so it'd be easier to follow.
-
I dunno why, but I loved this chapter.
page 11 alone, I will build a cathedral and put it on it!
-
I wish I had the volume version of this so I could really see the art style and what's going on (in terms of movement and attacking).
-
I followed the fight here pretty fine. Cool chapter.
-
The ship creeping up the slope was pretty awesome.
-
That's one giant ass ship!

Here's a better link:
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-chapter-313.html?ch=Chapter+314&page=1I can't wait to see just how humongous this sea god is. Fantastic chapter.
-
What an awesome chapter, I like how creative muira is be'n with these tentacle monsters.
-
This is the wrong series to start reading during Summer School Hell Week. Consider me hooked for the time being.
-
I'm finally caught up with Berserk! ^_^
Anyways, I really like this series. My favorite characters so far are Guts, Puck, Schierke, and Serpico. I don't really have a favorite arc though. Also, I liked how Guts progressed through the story. And I liked how he met the people that are in his party at the moment as well.
Anyways, my thoughts on the newest chapter. I liked how the fight with the Sea God's tentacles is coming along. Can't wait to see the full form of the Sea God. Also, never expected a ship to climb the island and be on land. I think that ship is the pirates' ship that was in the last few chapters. Also, I think that next chapter, Guts and his party will fight the ship. And I think that Schierke, Ishidoro and Isma will arrive to help out Guts, and everyone else there. -

There is one thing I've read about Muira and his hiatuses. I don't even want to start an argument, but I've seen something on TVTropes about him and I don't really know if it is true, but here it is:
Muira has developed a serious case of Vicarious Traumatic Stress Disorder from drawing this manga for years and years, which is a huge factor in the Schedule Slip Back when he started, Miura didn't figure that working on a manga with such explicit horrifying material could have serious consequences on himself. Working on Berserk for so long took a serious toll on Muira's psychological and emotional health, which is why he's taking so many long breaks; his employers are letting him recuperate so the guy doesn't fucking kill himself. I mean, if I spent so much time living in the heads of fictional people who've lived through the deepest darkest bowels of human depravity and cruelty, I'd snap and turn into a moe-addict too. -

That ghost ship must be something special if guts has to rely on the armor's power.
Looks like were going back on hiatus people.
-
Well they're surrounded by them and he wasn't exactly destroying the giant tentacles with ease. He had to do his cannon spin combo to be able to cut one of those last chapter. The snails are probably just as hard.
Til next time at the end. So we're back on hiatus for another 3-4 month.

GUTS CUTS UP TENTACLES PART 3485546
And back on hiatus.
Makes Kubo's trolling look pretty tame imo.
-
I wonder how long the pirates will survive, I kept thinking that they were going to die when they fought Gut's party as monsters for the first time and now that they returned here, they were in swords length of Guts in berserk form and yet there still in one piece. Maybe there being saved for something bigger or maybe they'll stay as comedy relief until the end of the arc like the guy that got killed by Caska in the Golden Age saga.

the art is great as ever, as I sweep through last 10 chapters after I have left the manga and mangaka be for what half a year or more. And than I end my only thought being:
He will not finish this manga in his life time
