It was obvious he would be a logia with a power based on some sort of red substance.
We had already seen Kizaru be hit by Haki, and we'eve already seen Luffy defeat Logias.
There was really no real reason to doubt his logia status being inevitable.

To be fair, early on there was some actual legitimate discussion on Akainu's logia status, due simply to the question of "How the hell is Luffy ever supposed to hit and beat that guy", especially since he had just fought Magellan and had problems with that very issue.
That was never an argument since even if it would have been a Paramecia type the problem of Akainu being untouchable would have still remained.

Putting the magma > fire logic aside if Oda gave him the blood DF I think he could've still reasoned Ace's death by giving Akainu (some specifically named) haki.

It could also be the case that Oda always planned for Akainu to be the one to kill Ace and he chose his power accordingly. It'd have been impossible to make blood a weakness of fire (or it would have been really contrived) unlike magma which is reasonable if stretching it a bit. Sure Oda could have gone the route of seastone or haki but the simple fact that Ace had an Enel relationship with Akainu and could simply be fisted by him rather than adding another plot device trick made the moment that much more powerful, dire and hopeless.
