I proudly wore my DBZ t shirt until one day these snot nosed kids at my apartment got all excited over it. I hid it in my drawer never to be seen again. I agree. Wanting to be like Naruto can not be a good thing. :P
The Pirate Summit and Arlong Park Redesign

you all know that OP is damn successful?
its not an unknown manga which could be seen as a tip for manga-lovers. i know that you aren
t going around and everyone knows the story and stuff, but most of the people at least heard something about it but still don`t bother to get as much infos as possible(like addicted like us do)..they just stay with the manga or the anime…so in my opinion the fanbase will just increase with those, who found out recently that this series exists via anime ...
so no worries, it wont be increasing into a number, like every moron is behind naruto...but so far most of those who actually like OP stay with it for a while and than see that it
s rly good. -
It's nice to see people be passionate about something and actively try to reach out to new audiences.
And you can't criticise this, seeing as none of you pay to use this forum or the other sites, nor will it affect your lives in any way if you choose to ignore it. People aren't going to come up to you and force something down your throat. So if you are going to bitch and moan, think about what a massive dickhead you are instead.
Good luck to you guys, hope your plans work out.
-
I disagree, I want OP to hit DBZ levels in America. The series deserves such exposure and would make being a fan more convenient if you could go in plenty of stores and walk out with OP goods which you could promptly get buried under in case of an earthquake.
… I somehow managed to lose most of my DBZ shit, which puzzles me.

Hey, shame on you Buuhan, it's too early to joke about Haiti. It's totally unsensitive.
In all seriousness though, I'm with you in wishing OP more exposure here in the West. First of all because it's just a great piece of entertainment and art and Oda deserves every shred of recognition and of course the comfort aspect mentioned by you.
If it means we partly lose our status as an "isolated" and "in-the-know" group, so be it. We can always find other groups or subcultures to be part of, where we can then show disdain for outsiders.
Now that that's out of the way, I'm going to sit in my vintage lounge-chair, ironically smoke a pipe and listen to this really awesome indie band on my record player. You probably haven't heard of them, they're not mainstream.

It's an interesting project. Though i wonder how it will work. The podcast already discusses stuff we have in the numerous threads here (plus a few extras). We have a general section for news.
I feel there are so much duplicated informations. What could be confusing for the guys you want to reach is, "where will they get all the informations they need/want?".Think about it… During the last Jump festa many users were confused about where to get gregs recap. "On the podcast or here on apf?" "Where do i get it all?"
Now this project wants to link all the sources and you will have to deal with redundancy. How do you plan to solve that problem? Also... The last jump festa showed me that the news were spread on apf and the podcast. Wouldn't it be a greater issue with your project? What if one post it on A make a little summary on B and a single sentence on C?
Wouldn't that mean that both side will have more work? The contributors to link their news correctly and reach everyone and the readers to search and reassemble all the informations? The real issue is "what will be on the blog and how do you plan to avoid confusion?"
-
Think about it… During the last Jump festa many users were confused about where to get gregs recap. "On the podcast or here on apf?" "Where do i get it all?"
That's entirely my fault. I wasn't able to type up the information as fast as I wanted to and there was a huge delay. I'm sorry about that but it was a hectic week going back and forth between Tokyo and Fukui not once, but twice O_o My bad.
-
What you did was already insane. But this is bound to happen in future if you (or someone else) go to these events… How to inform the fans properly?
I recall you saying on the podcast that you will reserve some informations for the podcast to help them grow or whatever.
My main issue is the split of informations we might have. On your website here on the forum and on the podcast... Then there will be the blog... This might generate more work and confusion than having everything in one place.
-
i thought that was the point of the blog. to tell you what's going on and to direct you to where all the info is.
ex: Jan 18th 7:30pm
Jump FiestaAll those interested in the Jump Fiesta, Greg will be posting updates as they come, via
"gregs url.com" If you would like to wait a few days, we will be having a pod cast of jump fiesta on Jan 20th at 8pm Pacific time. We will have all the information gathered by then, and will let you know everything that went on.–--------------------
that works for me. -

Well maybe that is what ThePirateSummit is suppose to do, link all the one piece community's so that there will not be any confusion. Like on the podcast, they could tell where to find the other bits of section of news.I mean if the main point of this is to bring the One Piece community together then this type of issue would be easy to resolve if we are all together on where the sites are and what not.
-

Ah, thank you for mentioning this. Actually what I meant by that was, there are certain things I hold back for the podcast, however, in the end EVERYTHING ends up either here or my site. Since they've given me a great opportunity to get information about my site and projects out, it's only fair I give them some exclusives as an incentive for listeners.
However, this is my OP homebase and, unless I completely forget about something because I'm swamped with private stuff, I would never leave something on the podcast without posting it here soon afterwards so if you're looking for one place that will cover everything, chances are good that it's right here.
However, without resorting to multiple threads, I think that's a nice way to let everyone know directly where info is.
But for me? Having a twitter function to get out site updates is awesome.

btw folks, I used italics to start my previous post. That's like, code, for sarcasm.
While there is something to be said about it being a smaller club, where upon if you saw someone else wearing a t-shirt with characters on it, you'd instantly know you could be friends with them (as was the case with DBZ back when I was in highschool… I made many of my senior year friends on the very first day by wearing such a shirt)... not to mention, the more people that know about it, the more likely you are to have retards peeing in the pool.
That aside, there's also a lot to be said about massive commercial success.
Namely, tie in products. Like soundtracks, video games, stupid ass keychains and the like. And of course, the company putting the material out making enough profit to KEEP putting it out until the end of its run 10 years a messload of chapters/episodes from now.
Also if they sell a bajillion copies of the dvds and manga, they can make them cheaper and more readily avaialble in places and air on tv and... stuff.
The exclusive club is cool, but recognized success would also be nice. It'll probably never happen because OP has small eyes, giant grins, and psycadelic bright fruity colors and crazy bizarre looking villains, it just lacks the immediate visual appeal the american audience is looking for.
But a more unified network? All for it.

Actually we do have a sarcasm tag. [/sarcasm]
…
As far as the large/small fandom is concerned I don't really think it should have been brought up, because that is as controversial and issue as VIZ Media, 4Kids or FUNimation, which people like to dissect. I personally feel there is more persuasion toward the "small community" line of thinking but we should refrain from hot issues until this project gets underway. Then we can debate it to death.
-
Selfish Greg: Small fandom is way more fun.
Realistic Greg: Big fandom is probably better for those involved in making the series and for that reason I support it.
-
@robbybedfart:
Unify the fandom? Screw that! I want One Piece's fanbase to stay as small and insular as possible!
If it ever became successful it would start to suck!
Imagine if the average person knew about it, and actually suppoted its domestic release! Then I wouldn't be an elitist who samples only from illegal bootleg copies anymore, I would be a common shlub, and there is no joy in that!
I hate admitting I'm an elitist. I hate being able to relate to half of something said so thick with sarcasm. However, I do not hate this Pirate Summon idea. I'm looking forward to this really cool way for One Piece fans to connect. That being said, is there any way I can help?
And on my earlier note, I really don't care how popular something I like is. I really don't get why so many people here do, especially now that we are getting the speedup and the marvel of watching One Piece on television has as many negatives as positives. Do so many of you need something you like to be popular so you can reassure yourself that it is indeed worthwhile? Maybe you just want to see Oda get his dues, and I can understand that, but he's already got Japan for that. One Piece's fanbase is just big enough that everyone in the anime community knows about it but it's not held at arm's length in common conversation, as Naruto is.
-
I hate how anime gets americanized when it gets too popular. I also hate the stupid obnoxious fans when things get too popular. I find the smaller niche animes have "normal" fans. I realize I'm being fussy, but that's just me. I'm not gonna stop liking OP. it just annoys me a little.

I can definitely understand that, but ya know without a actual crowd the anime and manga would not continue because of the one ting that runs the world: Money.

You've got to have…money.

it's popular in japan. that works for me. :D

So what happened with the redesign of Arlong Park and the Pirate Summit(which has not been updated since April)?
-
… cough
AP is... getting there.
Since people were quiet about it, I thought people forgot about it. I've got to reshuffle my priorities to squeeze in attention for AP.
It's just a bit delayed. Twilight Princess style, kind of. If I had a clone for each of my sites, hobby or job-related, everything could finish in a timely matter.
It's up to the others if they want to show off the logo to the public though.

If Jason wants to, I believe he has it. I'm still interested in getting this thing off the ground. I haven't seen you on Skype for some time though, and Jason's been unusually busy.
The Pirate Summit is Jason's baby, and I'd say the aforementioned reason is why that hasn't been updated.

-
well, does anything happen in the next time or is this project on ice?
also the main site…ehhm is there anything done yet..haven`t noticed much new stuff.
also iam curious why it stopped that on the main site updates or so are posted (last Update\info was in november 2009)does this mean you don
t care anymore for the mainsite arlongpark.net, because you don
t think anyone visits it anymore..so why even update it with
for example: new spoiler is out..check it out here.
etc. -
It's still being worked on, slowly. The new site is being completely redone, we aren't just making changes to the existing site. Aside from that, I can't give you much information.
-
guess i have to be patient.
but would be cool when from time to time some updates on this project would be posted ^^ -
@Don:
guess i have to be patient.
but would be cool when from time to time some updates on this project would be posted ^^We're working hard on it, the server is ready to go, but Cinder's still working on the crux of the design and we're still revising and creating content for it. We'll let you guys know when we have a more solid ETA, but things have been going slower than any of us really wanted it to. Sometimes that's just the way these kind of things work though.
-
yeah, for sure some projects need their time..i mean you don`t get paid for it and real life sometimes is so mean and slows it down
-

Just beat my hunger :P. I can't wait for the new one.
-
robby's post lies between humorous and precisely how I feel.
Something about DBZ lost its charm for me when people walking down the street could name the blondies on my t-shirt.
It's fun to be into something where the people that know, know.
I understand this sentiment a lot.
That's why I like wearing shirts where you have to know to know.
Like this one.

Except…nobody I know watches LOST ; . ;

I'm really looking forward to see the redesigned forum… Something new for a new era of OP
I hope we will have a skin for each SH and a Moria one for Beka xD
-
Let's party like it's 2005!
Seriously, I'm glad the main site is getting a face lift. It'll be good for the new fans like it was for me when I got into One Piece.
Yay! This is great! I'm really looking forward to the new design, especially.
One question, though: Will there be alot of downtime while the site is being changed? -
First I read April, than post in June about delay, now the last post before me is one month back.
I guess it will take time, but better to postpone and bring it out flashy than half-ass job being done about it.
Looking forward to it
-
True that… Can't wait for it our good ol AP is still working very well. So we have all time
