Pretty darn cool-looking effects, there. The only thing that looks odd to me is that I can't tell if Akainu's shirt is supposed to be black there, or is actually harden magma or something. Sure the better quality version will clear that confusion right up.

It's his tattoo. All of tattoos are coloured black by Oda. It's blue in the anime, just like Nami's.

As much as I would love this to happen… Next volume starts with Ace's death and ends up on a flashback. But then again, if you count chapters Ace was in... Not much. But he's the central person of the war. I think next cover is going to be dedicated to him.

There's actually no reason why Luffy with his :O face and Ace in his arms shouldn't be featured on a cover together with Blackbeard, his henchmen and engulfed by pitch black darkness - notice Luffy was featured on the covers of this volume and the one before despite the general theme depicting something different.
too bad this discussion will probably be lost in this thread once the vol.59 prediction comes up :/
I feel as though Whitebeard will be getting another cover, not that I have any problem with that.
I can totally see his unmarred back, standing position as a centerpiece.
