True, they could have at least done just a lalala or something …
New official Viz media topic V2.

It is La la la at the end of volume 43.
Did you expect consistency?

Hmm … well, didn't Sogeking change the lulu lala lu part a lot anyway or did I imagine that?
-
Well, he did sorta have to make the song up on the spot, so it makes sense to me that some parts would change slightly. No biggie either way.
Let's see, even if that is pretty much what douriki means and is used for, using Power Level is funny since it reminds us all of a certain Internet meme.

I don't know what meme you're referring to, but it seems people have alot of complaints. I can't even count how many there are, there are OVER 9000!
-
I hope Funi uses Power Levels…
-
-
I was reading chapter 236 in volume 25, and I noticed Viz forgot to change the Zoro wanted poster. Good news to me, lol.
And hopefully volumes 39-43 should be in my mailbox tomorrow~

Ok, about Sogeking's Song. It was translated that way so that the song now Rhymes like it does in Japanese.
Sogeki No shima De
Umareta ore wa
hyaapatsu hyakyuchu
Lu lu la la LuuI was born on Sniper Island,
And I hit my target 100 percent of the time!
Laa Dee Daa, Laa dee dyeIt's not perfect, but it comes close to rhyming.
Only thing is, it doesn't fit the tune anymore.
I always translated the song like this:
Oh the Islands of Snipers,
Was the place where I was born!
100 Shots, 100 hits!
Lu Lu Lala Luu
I could hit a Mouses eye, oh Lock on!
I could even hit your heart! Lock ON!
I'm the man from Sniper Island and I'm really cool!
Lu Lu Lu, Lu Lu Lala!
You'd Bet-ter-run-you-FOOL
Sniper Sniper Sniper Sniper
I'm the So-ge-King!I'd like FUNi to use something like that.

The whole power scene has to be a reference to over 9000, then again could just be a coincidence. Is the Viz translation of the scene accurate?
EDIT: It's accurate, if the scanlations are: http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/379/08/ Funny coincidence indeed.
-
Right Stuf sent me a volume 32 without sticker :getlost:
Guess I'll have to pick up another copy of 32 on my next trip to the bookstore (next week for my shonen jump run)

That means it got another printing already! Right…? If so, that's good news. Check your copy to see if it says "second printing."

Oh my, something accurate? In Viz's One Piece translation? NO WAY. Anyway, yeah, it's definitely a coincidence, and I bet once it comes up in the dub it's going to become a forced meme on YouTube.

I like your version a lot. The thing is with all of this, English is just a much less lyrical language. It's got all these annoying sounding words and pronunciations that aren't as easy to rhyme as the vowel heavy endings to Japanese words.

Got volumes 39-42, sent an email to rightstuf inquiring about 43. Looks very good so far. I'm noticing they're lightening up on the cursing. I've noticed quite a few craps in the last few volumes, and Spandam says dammit in volume 42 near the beginning. Also a what the hell and quite a few craps in volume 42 as well.
Edit: Oh, and as far as any weird names, the only real one I've noticed so far is Sodomu and Gomora. Sodomu? Really Viz? I know it's an accurate translation, but it's fairly obvious what it's supposed to be.
One More Edit: Chopper is back to using Point now apparently

It's to avoid using Sodom and Gomorrah.
-
I know that, hence why I said it's fairly obvious what it's supposed to be, even when using the editing.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing for them to edit the name? Because on SBS vol 43 a fan asked for Oda confirmation whether the name Sodom and Gomorrah are based on the Old Testament. Oda confirmed the name came from there.
-
Sounds like Enies Lobby got a good deal.
None of the translations that have been mentioned remotely bug me.
Even though the original is pronounced Gear Second, something about it always sounds quite awkward
-
How did they translate attack names in the April volumes?
Such as "Tekkai Gou", is it "Strong Iron Body"? -
Tekkai -Iron Body
Kami-e -Paper Art
Rankyaku -Tempest Kick
Geppou -Moonwalk
Soru -Shave
Shigan -Finger Pistol -
I know those, I mean the other versions of them, like Tekkai Gou and Shigan Ouren.
-
Not sure about Shigan Ouren, but Tekkai Gou is Iron Body Strength.
I also received an email from RightStuf that said they got volume 43 shipment in separately yesterday afternoon, and it'll be shipping out today.

Really? That's good in a way. At least they're not scared (anymore) to convey the seriousness of Enies Lobby, and OP in general.

Thats awesome! It must be because of funimation. Not that they truely had anything to with it, but when the only coresponding television spits out lots and lots of cursing at times, I find it would only be natural for the comic to follow in a similar tone.
-

Yep, volume 32 is from a second printing
-
Well, I checked up on my order with RightStuf.
Apparently, 23 and 32 are still "on order with manufacturer", but the rest I need (32, 34-35, 37-38) are reserved for my order. And it also looks like 39-43 are also reserved for my order. So I'm pretty excited!
…I just wonder what the deal is with 23 and 30. Are they hard to find or something? They've been on backorder for a good 2 weeks now, at the least.

This post is deleted!

That's just ridiculous. Do they really think some religious nut job is going to complain over that?
And even if they did complain, they wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on, a name is a name.I swear Viz is run by some sort of hypersensitive monkey at times.
'Oh no that sounds vaguely religious (breaks out in sweat), censor, censor, censor!' -

'Oh no that sounds vaguely religious (breaks out in sweat), censor, censor, censor!'It's the same case as "Kami Eneru". People sue over every little thing, and Viz doesn't want that.

Viz need to stand up for themselves. What could people possibly sue for?
Using religious references in comics? That isn't a crime. If it was I guess they'll have to sue DC and Marvel then as well. Oh and Vertigo and Wildstorm and Image and IDW, etc.
I guess you better string Garth Ennis up as well, just to make sure he doesn't write anything else.

That's what I've been saying!
If religion shouldn't be allowed in any comic, then we should ban Wonder Woman because she worships the Greek Gods. After much consideration, I'm going to save my money and NOT buy the Viz volumes.
I feel it should go to something much better, like Funimation's DVDs. Where they don't bend over to every single person that could possibly sue them. -
Oh yea, Douriki is Power Level.
Thank god Lucci wasn't 9,000.

Hey so I was on another One Piece forum and people there were saying it's a mistake to translate a few words. So could anyone here with a little Japanese knowledge fill me in.
Nakama
Douriki
Shichibukai
Yonkou
Douriki
Kami
Haki
SogekingThey claim these words cannot and should not be translated as it's akin to 4kids removing all culutural references from a series. Changing the word Yonkou to Emperor they claim is the same as removing the words Daimyo or Samurai.
Can anyone else fill me in on this a little bit.
To the best of my understanding Yon means four. Yonkou is being used as a title, but literally most closely resembles "One of the Four Emperorers" when used in a phrase like Yonkou Whitebeard. The context clues that Garp said "They rule like Emperors" allows translators to make the change to Emperor and this isn't being culturally insensitive, it's just making it easy to understand for English readers because while it may not have a DIRECT translation, in this instance some translation is better as it isn't a meaningless title in Japanese - it imparts some kind of meaning to Japanese readers so a suitable English title replacement makes sense.
That's just my interpretation though, so I'd like some feedback.
-
I'll try my best to explain why people hate those words being translated.
Nakama:
It can translate out to shipmate, comrade, or crewmate. People prefer to use this word because "shipmate or crewmate isn't strong enough, and comrade is too soviet". Friend can also work, but people are far too picky with that.Douriki:
It's power level, this one isn't bad since Oda has yet to reuse this concept.Shichibukai:
The best translation is Seven Warlords of the Sea. You can just call them "a Warlord" it's not a magic word.Yonkou:
This translation is much easier, it means Four Emperors. Again, just call them Emperors.Kami:
This isn't a special One Piece term. This is Viz covering their asses so they don't get sued. They didn't translate Eneru's title as God, leaving it as "Kami". It's incredibly stupid, and shows that Viz cares too much about liability.Haki:
I prefer Spirit, but the best translation is Ambition.
Oh, and to those who say "Spirit is too DBZ", guess what Funimation is calling the Haushoku Haki? Conqueror's Spirit!Sogeking:
This one is debatable. Sogeking is a pun on Sogeki, which is Japanese for Sniper. Sniperking is the best translation for it. I'm just waiting for what FUNI is going to call him. -
Except for maybe kami, there aren't any cultural Japanese words in there. They're all easily translatable and/or adaptable into English:
nakama: friend/comrade/ally/shipmate etc. depending on the context
douriki: path of power, or more colloquially, power level
Shichibukai: Seven Armed Seas
Yonkou: Four Emperors
Kami: God
Haki: Ambition, willpower, etc.
Sogeking: SniperkingNow, if it's something that's explicitly Japanese, like the name of a Japanese time period, a place, or other kind of name etc., then you could make an argument for not translating it, but One Piece doesn't have many explicitly unique Japanese plot elements aside from the sword names.

I was glad to hear how Viz was easing up on the psuedo swearing for Enies Lobby, but Water 7 was full of psuedo swears. One of which confuses me to no end. And they use it multiple times, too. Can someone tell me what a "Bumpkin" is?
-
A bumpkin is sort of like a country hillbilly or a hermit. The only one who used it was Franky in regards to Kaku at one point, and would probably make more sense when you consider that Kaku is called ''the mountain wind'', and that he talks like an old man in the Japanese version. It's not meant to be a swear.
And, well, Luffy did tell Usopp to cut the crap at one point. I don't actually remember much swearing in Water 7, psuedo or otherwise.

Those are probably the same people who jizz for keikaku.

Ok, then, thanks. Yeah Cut the Crap was used once in the chapter before the Luffy vs Usopp fight. It was actually kind of shocking.

Haki is going to be a hot topic in the Funi topic when they get around there… Hopefully Oda cools the fire in an SBS or something... Then again I'm hoping for a bit more entertainment.
-
Unless things change, Haki should be translated for the dvd's.

Hey, don't get mad at the guy. XD 'least, he came to us rather than assuming it was right.

Ah well thank you very much. That re-confirms what I previously believed to be true. I myself have no Japanese knowledge so I wanted to verify all those words with people who actually speak some Japanese.
-
Thank god the One Piece anime is Fucking ruined in latin america so Toei cant tell Larp what to put in the manga…...
BUT IM STILL PISSED AT TOEI FOR RUINING IT!
-
Yay! My B&N had 39-43! But I'm broke at the moment so I could only get 39 & 40…..
-
Okay, guys, I got the April volumes (39-43) from Barnes and Noble. (Thanks to EGX/J-sack for letting me know B&N have them early).
A couple of things I noticed at first glance:
Spandam does say dammit in the beginning of Volume 42. He says it when he first finds out that the strawhats entered the Judicial Tower.
In the preview at the end of Volume 43, Rob Lucci says "Razor" I can only assume this was meant as a translation of Soru, which they previously used "Shave" for. Though, I'll admit that razor sounds cooler. :ninja:
Unfortunately, the chapter title spread for chapter 377 is not the one they use on the back cover of the volume (39), so we won't see that in color until they bring over the color walks (if they do).
If anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to answer them. I visit this thread often, so I'll try to answer as soon as possible.

Actually, Lucci does have a variation of Soru that's called Kamisori, which translates to Razor.
