Yeah, I was sorta shocked when I saw the Anime clip of this & how they just hung out & drank, it's pretty kool.
Shanks and Mihawk Rivals/Sparring Buddies?!!!
-
-
Also worth noting is that Mihawk - a shichibukai who "doesn't like to party" - was portrayed as an honorable and exemplary person. Shanks treated him with nothing but respect too.
-
Yeah what a downer, gee that dude doesn't know how to chug proporly

For those of you who did not beleive,
Oda wrote: Shanks Mihawk Rivals and sparring Buddies?
here's a little info bit on the deal with the sword: (shanks)
shanks was left-handed, therefore he kept the sword on his right side so he could draw it (why he hasn't switched 'er over…?). he WAS (at least before the whole losing-an-arm business) a potentially high-level swordsman, and in the past he and mihawk considered each other rivals, and still do till this day.I did not want to translate the whole thing because it is too much info.
those facts are taken from the first page of the info blurb on shanks in One Piece RED (pg 152). also in the Ask Oda Questions section, they ask Oda whether Shanks is a swordsman, and if loosing his arm affected his strength. Oda replied "that he was a swordsman, and that he still is as strong with one arm as he was with two. Mihawk and shanks have a level of respect and have a great friendship together. there is a mystery solved!!! I beleive behind Whitebeard Mihawk and Shanks are the most powerful in the World of One Piece.
This was really for oceanizer or Carly to confirm this, they both said that they found no information in their red/blue data books about Shanks and Mihawk being rivals. It is clearly stated in the Red Data book pg 152 in Shanks information "Blurb". Read it and state it back to me to see if what I put down is correct.
-
I prefer my theory….
Shanks and Mihawk are one and the same, made possible by mirrors and swirly colours.XD -
I agree that shanks is still just as powerful. How would losing an arm diminish one's skills?

Do you really expect either of us to go flipping through every damn page of text just for you ? We didn't see it on his main info page, which is where we both thought that if it was in there, that's where it would've been. We have lives outside of reading OP, you know :glare:
Anyway, what it says on that page:
本来左ききであるシャンクスはかつて、右の腰に長剣を携えていた。 ミホークとライバルだった過去からみても、その剣の実力は世界でもトップクラスだったのだろう
"At first, the left-handed Shanks had simply carried his sword on the right side. When he was a rival of Mihawk, he was regarded as having some of the world's top-class skills"
As an addendum to that, Shanks carries a longsword and it doesn't mention the two of them currently being rivals, nor does it say why Shanks had the sword on the right of his waist in the first place. (It's obviously to draw it out easier, but still, there's not a mention of it)
-
My prediction:
Shanks fights Hawkeye and wins
Zoro fights and kills Shanks to become World's Greatest SwordsmanWhy? Because it would be a major drama moment.
-
No offense but this is the biggest anticlimatic and undramatic crap that could ever happen to Zoro´s dream. Zoro himself said that at the end of the road he is walking there is a man waiting for him and that would be Mihawk. If someone else takes down Mihawk before Zoro and replaces him for the title of # 1 swordfighter in the world the silent promise made between those two gets completely ruined.
Hope you don´t take my statement personal but that´s just my point of view at that idea.

second I'd like to add I know some Aikido, I may be no black belt but I don't need a damn rythem stick
And third hey Ivotas, i think we've ended up arguing on every thread we both post on XD

My ideas… I think Shanks is possibly stronger than Mihawk. Mihawk is, in my view, the better swordsman. But I think Shanks has abilities past that which makes him stronger. My reason for thinking this is that when Mihawk visits Shanks he says "I've long ago given up trying to fight the one-armed man" That's not the exact quote I think but that's pretty much it.

Hey Carly, I wanted to apologize for being inconsiderate and realize that you have a life outsside of One Piece. I just wanted to know how much would it cost for you to translate that whole segment on Shanks in the Red data book pg. 152. the information on him being rivals with Mihawk? Matter of fact how much would it cost for you to translate all the information concerning Mihawk and Shanks? period!!<_<

Well yeah, why not? It´s a discussion board after all. After I think we´re here to discuss the series that we love so much aren´t we?

Probably more than you're willing, seeing as how I barely have time for my own translations these days

I've had a strong belief for awhile now that Shanks and his crew would end up being the or one of the StrawHat's final opponent(s). Seeing this only strengthen's that belief.
Just imagine. Both crews wind up at Rough Tell (or whatever it's called) and decided to battle over One Piece. We've seen some of the skills of Shank's crew, and it's quite possible that most if not all of them could rival or surpass the strength of the StrawHats.
Plus, we still don't completely seem to know what Shank's true skills are (though I somehow doubt a DF). Sure, he's a swordsman but, as stated before, he's not the best swordsman, though that doesn't mean he's any weaker than Mihawk. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out with some wierd, yet effective, fighting style in the end (if he is indeed their final foe).
-
I don't see Luffy and Shanks fighting.
Luffy admires and respects Shanks as a role model. They share the same values, except Shanks never seemed to have One Piece as his dream. When they meet, Shanks will be impressed as to how far he's come.
Luffy only seems to fight when his opponent is a threat to "good people". Shanks is not one of these people, so what's the moitivation?
The only justification would be if Shanks stood right between Luffy and One Piece. I can't see him doing that; it would require him to 1) chase One Piece, b) beat them there and 3) be unwilling to step aside or cooperate.
It actually raises an interesting question. What happens if two people share One Piece– will they be co-kings of the pirates?
-
Luffy´s promise to Shanks is not only to become Pirate King but also to defeat him. I don´t get why that part of the promise gets ignored all the time but the Pirate King thing doesn´t seem to be overseen at any point.
-
I guess because when we first see Luffy, he'd obviously be happy being a cabin boy on Shanks' crew.
Is it a matter of "I'll defeat you some day" or "I'll better you as a pirate"? The latter doesn't involve direct combat. Bringing home the One Piece would do the job.
-
i think it was more like one day ill surpass you and your crew rather than one day illl beat the crap outta you XD
and i most definetly agree that Zoro having to face shanks cause he beat Mihawk would totaly and utterly blow,
-
Well it is the "I´ll defeat you thing". Going by Stephen´s scripts he says this in chapter 1:
Luffy: "I DO!!! Someday I'll find some guys that won't lose to you!! I'll find the greatest treasure in the world!!!"
And in the anime it´s like this:
Besides it´s not much different than what Zoro is aiming for. He aims to defeat a person he looks up to. True Mihawk is not his childhood hero but I´d say that he still admires Mihawk.
-
still those statments are fairly fuzzy he could just as well have been saying that hes aiming to gather a crew that surpasses the red hairs which is how i like to see it cause that really means that he aims to be an even greater pirate than shanks,
or he might have meant that he will gather some really strong people and physicly kick their asses which to me doesnt really sound that luffy like you know this whole threathening his favorite person in the whole world with violence for no apparent reason.
and on a side note i do think they will fight at some point but i just dont think that i will beat you to the ground was what he meant with that statment.
-
I never said that "beat you to the ground" thing. All I think is that a part of the promise is that Luffy will surpass Shanks in a fight. It´s actually not that far off that people who admire each other true to take it out in what they do best. It´s something that is omnipresent in the human history. The student tries to surpass his master. It´s not always a hostile motif but a dream that includes lots of respect.
People who are honorable and do both the same thing never aim to surpass each other by avoiding direct confrontation. The keyword here is "honorable people". No men who are both strong/good in the same how shall I say, discipline then they always seek direct confrontation, no matter where.
In sports for instance, it is the same. The honorable guys hope to oppose each other to compare themselves in a direct duel. Only after a victory in such a confrontation they consider themselves as worthy to be a champion.
The weaklings of course hope that the strong guys take each other down and that in the end they´ll get lucky in the final confrontation but the true honorable guys can´t consider themselves champions if they don´t beat the best. And for Luffy it is the same. To him Shanks is the best, he looks up to him. Just getting the title of the Pirate King without confronting his idol directly wouldn´t mean much too him. You can ask every kid that wants to become a professional athlete what they wish for. They all wish to become the best and surpass their idols in a direct confrontation (no matter if possible or not, that´s the wish).
Honorable guys care more about how they got the title then for the title themselves. If you don´t beat the best directly then they never feel worthy of the title champion. An honorable F-1 races doesn´t just want to be world champion the cheap way by hoping that his strong opponents fall out through accidents. He wants to beat them directly by being faster then them.
And honorable soccer player doesn´t just hope that his team has more points at the end of the season then other strong ones. He only feels like a champion if he beat the strong opponents in a direct duel.
An honorable sword fighter doesn´t beat only weak guys and hopes that at some points all the other strong sword fighters die of illness. They seek the direct confrontation to determine the best. And an honorable pirate as Luffy doesn´t just want to be the first one to reach wherever One Piece is hidden. If he would be a racer/helmsman then maybe just speed would matter. But Luffy is a fighter. The whole point of everything was that he proves to Shanks that he is stronger then him. If he gets to One Piece before Shanks it would be a cheap shot. He may have been faster then Shanks but he wouldn´t have proven to Shanks that he is stronger then him. Luffy is too honorable to avoid a direct confrontation with his idol. He would never feel happy with the title Pirate King if he would do it that way.
Plus, it would be a much better ending if the hero defeats his idol at the end instead of the next best villain of the week. It is more climatic this way.
-
I can see Luffy trying to prove his superiority over Shanks. I just can't see him wanting to injure or stop him. It clashes with his ethic, as I said, not harming good people.
Maybe if Shanks became a Shickabuchai… not this discussion again. :D
-
I agree with you here. Hurting Shanks is not Luffy´s intention. It´s about a fair fight. Simple as that.
Of course when you find you hurt each other, but the intention is not to make the other suffer in pain but to give him your all as your respect towards him.
However I still hope that Shanks will die in the fight. I think that he would die as a happy man if he falls in a fight against Luffy. Same counts for Luffy though I don´t see him losing against Shanks at the end. Just a personal preference.
-
sorry just wanted to fiannly clear one piece up in one post….(prepare yourselves)
Mihawk used to be a woman
Shanks and Mihawk were married and gave birth to Ace and Luffy
Shanks and Mihawk couldn't take the fighting anymore and divorced
Gold Roger was the judge that dealt with the court case
Mihawk had a sex change so no-one would know about his secret past
Blackbeard was the foster parent of Luffy and Ace
One Piece is really the legal parenting rights of Luffy and Ace.Bish Bash Bosh
I'm sorry I dunno where that came from. -
imo, luffy vs shanks would be as similiar as luffy vs ace
they just want to beat each other, not hurt each other. -

I had a thought a little while ago…...but this only works if Donfalmingo can work dead people's muscles and I dunno if he can
1: Shanks dies (anyway you like)
2: Donflamingo raises his body
3: Luffy VS. Corpse shanks is final battle -
I think Doflamingo is (if his powers pan out) too big a threat to ALL parties involved to let him live too late into the series.
He doesn't have to control the lawmakers all the time, just when they're doing business. Just force them to sign documents and transfer power to him.
So I expect he'll end up crossing BOTH the pirates (by becoming a Shickabuchai) and the Government (by presenting a threat to the true leaders) and perhaps end up in an interesting three-way brawl, with the Strawhats and Marine on the same side.
-
I can see Shanks helping Luffy along until the end when they have a friendly yet intense fight for Luffy to prove how good he has got.
I can also see Shanks and Luffy ending up in a similar situation to Kratos and Lloyd, if anyone here has played Tales Of Symphonia. -
Read my lips: Whether by Luffy, Doflamingo, or some other villain, Shanks is dead, dead, deeeeeeeaaaaad. The man has the survival chances of trout under a tractor
-
Oh yeah, he'll blatantly die at the hands of one of the head villians at some point.
-
Or luffy :P
I first realized this when Shanks told luffy to "return this hat…" luffy practically IS the hat.
-
That'd be the most emotional moment in OP. Shanks falling before Luffy, Luffy bursting into tears and the hat slowly being carried into the sea by the wind.
-
So, it seems my thoughts aren't that far-fetched, eh?
Shanks falling before Luffy, Luffy bursting into tears and the hat slowly being carried into the sea by the wind.
Or Luffy finally "returns" it to him, i.e. laying it on his body.
-
Interesitng. I always pictured it as luffy standing over Shank's fallen body, picking up the blood stained hat and vowing to avenge him. But these are all good suggestions ^_^
-
I think BlackBeard will be the one facing and defeating Shanks
After all he is Luffy's nemesis, and that would give Luffy the motive to fight against BlackBeard
Althought there's a possiblity Buggy will be the one fighting Shanks
-
I really cannot see Luffy actually killing Shanks. Fighting him, yes. Killing? Never.
-
i agree, and what a great fight it'll be .
-
How about as a final twist.
We discover, after OP is located and presumably the game is over, that Shanks was recently murdered by someone.
Perhaps someone knew the Strawhats were too close to get to them directly, so they begin picking off major backstory characters… Shanks, Kaya, Nojiko, Zeff...

don flamingo is no match for shanks, seriously. even current luffy(Yup, gear 2 included) won't have a chance against shanks. some of you underestimate shanks because his hand get bitten of by a small fish. but whitebeard respected him, mihawk respected him, it speaks for itself. is there any chance for doflamingo to respect don krieg, if they ever meet? no, cus their strength is too different. and dont forget shonen manga rule #101: that weakass character that get his ass kicked by small fry in the first chapter, will become uber strong in the later chapter (bleach reference )

Fine, but shanks still has the survival chances of a sparrow in an air conditioner

I live with an author, I spend all my time with authors, and I've got three books published myself.
What I'm talkin about is the fact that, from the way the story is going, all signs point to shanks dying before the series ends. I'm not saying I'm the final authority on this or anything, but I DO have a lot of experience with stories, and that's how it looks.

ok….and what about this says shanks has to survive to the end of the series?
He's the mentor character, the one who gave the hero his dream. In every literary tradition on either side of the pacific, that character dies. I wasn't talking about his strength, I'm sure he's strong, I just think that storyline wise he is likely to die.
