Forrest Gump tries way too hard for me to take it seriously. It tries to be so symbolic, so cute, so clever, so romantic, and the whole time I felt like I was being force-fed Southern charm and had no actual reason to sympathize for most of the characters. Luckily Jenny was a well-rounded character; she saved the movie to an extent, but I didn't even like her character so the whole film was running on…running?

Really? I hated her the most. Forrest was so kind to her and she flipped him off like twice in the movie for no reason and only coming back to him in the end. I mean what the hell? Forrest on the other hand is one of the most sympathetic, awesome characters I have ever watched in a movie. Him and the lieutenant kicked ass. I just found the story so awesome because you get a retarded kid and watch as he grows to have the most kick-ass life anyone could imagine and hope for.
You know, we need to make a General Movie Review thread. I'd make it myself, but I think robby would be the most suitable creator of such a thread.
My request for a robby review…Dragonball Evolution! XD
(BTW, finished my homework)
You hated Jurassic Park?? Even when it came out? Wouldnt you have been like 11 when that came out? That movie is awesome and I would only think an 11 year old would be all over something like that. I dont think the R rating would have stopped you. Now Im curious what the hell do you like?
Jurassic Park was rated R? I thought it was PG  .
Edit: It's PG-13 in the US though PG everywhere else.
@Usopp:

Dude, that is NOT a one-man review. Hell, out of the entire cast of TGWTG.com, it took at least five of them to review the whole thing!

…I could not get through the movie even once, for free, on youtube. I do not think I have the fortitude to get through it, even for a comedic review.
I'll take a stab at forest Gump later though.

My 27 year old self is doing the reviewing, and not my 11 year old self. You can see a movie as a kid and enjoy it, then see it again later and see how bad it actually was.
Even when I originally saw it in what, 93? Sure, I was wowed by the dinosaurs, but everything else about it was terrible. Particularly the annoying kids. As an adult its even more dissapointing. I don't think I've seen it in at least 10 years.
As for what I liked? Here's a list of good movies (in no particular order):
Moulin Rougue. Castle of Cagliostro. Princess Mononoke. Wayne's World. Jackie Chan's Drunken Master. Incredibles. Lilo and Stitch. Shakespeare in Love. Casablanca. Terminator. (The first two ONLY.) Risky Business. Betty Blue. Clue. Robin & Marion. Star Wars. The Empire Strikes Back. Prelude to a Kiss. Jungle Book. One Hundred and One Dalmations (the animated version). 12 Angry Men. Little Shop of Horrors. Some Like it Hot. Henry V. Much Ado About Nothing. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Ran. The Third Man. Citizen Kane. Unforgiven. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The Great Mouse Detective. Wrath of Khan. From Russia With Love. Rear Window. Singing in the Rain. Stripes. Ghostbusters (the first one only). Vertigo. Almost Famous. 1776.
And many others. There's hundreds, thousands of good movies out there, and there's a ton that have good effects and good characters and stories. And some that have good characters and stories and NO effects and they carry through on that. There's room for dumb popcorn fun movies, but they shouldn't be excused from making sense or having good characterization or storytelling.
"Well its a blockbuster, what do you expect?" is the stupidest excuse EVER for movies being bad, and I hate that its so widespread. Anyway, theres now a new thread for this sort of discussion, ths can go back to being an AVatar thread.
Independence Day is part of my childhood nostalgia. Without it, it would not have created awesome homages like this.

Moulin Rougue
I think you need to watch that one again, Robby.
@robbybedfart:
Ah. Guilty pleasure movie is fine. Long as you aren't taking it seriously. Mine is Last Action Hero.
Last action hero is in my opinion a pretty clever parody really, so i wouldnt even consider it a guilty pleasure flick.
As for what I liked? Here's a list of good movies (in no particular order):
Moulin Rougue. Singing in the Rain.
Glad to see that im not the only guy around here who can enjoy a good musical.
I think you need to watch that one again, Robby.
I've seen Moulin Rouge at least a dozen times. The music is great, the personalities solid, the artistic direction visually stimulating, and its edited in such an MTV fashion that every time you watch it you catch something new, sheerly because if you blink, you miss something.
From the very opening moment where they have a full orchestra and curtain performing the studio theme, and the first five incredibly over the top minutes, you know its a movie that you have to keep up with. Every character, even the minor ones, have story arcs and development, some of them subtle, and given away with only a single line of dialouge. The chemistry between McGregor and Kidman is palpable, you really believe they're hot for each other and suffering love at first sight. The comedy and the romance, and the quotable dialouge are all there in heavy doses. The villian is weasely, yet dangerous, in the blatant way villains should be.
Oh, and it also has the best rendition of "Your Song" around, already one of my all time favorites songs. The Elephant Love Medley is fantastic (and makes for great amvs) as is "Something something". The use of Madonna, Elton John and the Beatles to represent the most talented poets of the generation, in a context we can understand today is brilliant. And even the tango version of "Roxanne" has put an understanding to the song that I will never be able to seperate from it.
Moulin Rougue is a great movie. I can understand why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it.
ANYWAY, really, this should all be migrated over to the other thread that was just made for this purpose.

Yeah, someone mentioned this earlier. I've been meaning to watch Gone with the Wind but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I always thought that those high-rankings had to do something with the tickets costing fucking 10 €
i think district 9 is a better version of this movie
i think district 9 is a better version of this movie
D9 focuses on character depth, whereas Avatar focuses on visuals. Comparing the two is pointless.
Anyway I thought I'd leave this.

it's not pointless because we establish that one movie is overall better than the other

Hrm. Interesting point. It seems familiar.
@robbybedfart:
Sheer inflation is always going to mean there's a new highest grosser.
If you adjust for inflation and count just ticket sales, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, and the Sound of Music are always going to be the top ones.
The thing is It doesn't really matter. You like what you like.
But yeah. This thing making a bajillion dollars doesn't mean much when a lot of it is coming from 3-D Imax tickets, which are 15 or 20 bucks a pop. Really, just a year ago Batman was giving Titanic a run for its money, but ticket sales…
Eh, whatever. Avatar was average, and in a few years it'll be remembered as such. Once its on just regular ol' 2-D tv, where it's going to spen 99.9% of its shelf life, it'll be overlooked pretty easily and its flaws will be more obvious.
(People that see the 3-D version seem to be more floored than those that see the 2-D, so... that's clearly a factor.)
Its flaws were pretty obvious in 3D.
District 9 was much worse than Avatar.
The acting was worse.
The action scenes werent well made like Avatar"s.
There were irrelevant things in the plot just to lengthen the movie, such ass Nigerian mobsters inside an alien facility. etc etc
The acting in D9 was worse than in Avatar!? The action scenes in D9 were phenomenal, though it wasn't relying upon them since it actually had a story. The Nigerians were in D9 to acquire the alien weapons and they were
! trying to gain the powers of the aliens by eating them.

The first hour of the Avatar movie was genuinely irrelevant to the plot-_-
District 9 is a movie that outdoes Avatar in every aspect outside visuals. Then again, the majority of movies are like that>.>
The effects in D9 were about as good I think as Avatar. They just didn't have as much as Avatar did. The aliens all looked incredibly real and the ship and the mecha suit all looked real as well.
First of All….Avatar's 1st hour was relevant to the plot, during this hour the world and the world's mythology were built.
One the other hand the action scenes werent well made in D9..it seemed that the Director couldnt control the time issues in those action scenes...
Nigerian mobsters were irrelevant, because how the hell can you leave some ass mafia retards enter an alien facility FOR FUCK'S sake ! They were just added to the plot in order to lengthen the movie...obviously.
lol do you even know what a slum is?
District 9 was much worse than Avatar.
I don't need to read the rest of your post to establish you're delusional.
The acting was worse.
It was the most realistic acting I've seen in a long while. Most films stick to the typical Hollywood scripts that feel so alien to everyday life. Whereas Wikus appears to have an actual human personality, especially when you look at his actions and reactions to his changing, the relationship/loyalty towards Christopher, his approach to his contract in the initial sequences in the slums. And finally the values he goes by in the second part of the film, especially towards the alien autopsy and weapons testing.
The action scenes werent well made like Avatar"s.
Avatars fighting sequences are mediocre at best. Whereas D9 has a feel of reality throughout.
How do remain ignorant of this?
There were irrelevant things in the plot just to lengthen the movie, such ass Nigerian mobsters inside an alien facility. etc etc
This is in the top 10 dumbest statements of 2010 for sure.
The fact is that avatar was some completely impossible series of events that follows Hollywoods typical direction of action.
Same Ol' Bruce Willis destroys helicopter with car type of event.
District 9 on the other hand had a real sense of reality to it. The slums and its inhabitants are definitely proof of this.

No you do not know what you are talking about the movie is a commentary on immigration and racism that takes place in South Africa in which Nigerians play a major part. They are involved in the drug, arms and prostitution trade that goes on in the slums of S Africa where many Nigerians crime lords reside.
The action scenes were awesome in D9 but the movie does not rely on them it relys on solid acting, good writing, flushed out characters and a original story something Avatar lacks.

You just proved me you know nothing about cinema.
1st of all the acting in D9 was so Unapealling. Then we have Nigerian Mobsters in a FUCKING ALIEN FACILITY ! EVEN IF ITS A SLUM OR A GHETTO, there is supposed to be some fucking security !!!!!!!!!! and you keep talking about things being realistic…... those were supposed to be beings with high technology (intelligence) but the 90% of them seemed more stupid than dogs.
Those mobsters btw were supposed to want to become as good as those aliens by eating them and shit, but the real purpose why they were in the movie was just to add up to the action scenes...I think it was obvious.
Avatar was better in acting, direction, music, effects, the plot had some typical cliches but there was a nice battle and some nice ideas like the nature-animals-people connection. All in all the result was great. On the other hand D9 had just a good main idea which wasnt developed well.
And Avatar"s odds to win the best picture is 1.50 and District"s 100.

The aliens weren't very intelligent. They were drones, basically they were meant to follow orders, and they had not leaders with them. This was explained in the movie.
The acting in D9 was much better, as was the script. The script for Avatar had a few places that when the actors spoke it just sounded awkward while everything in D9 felt perfectly natural. I don't remember any music in D9 but there probably was some. While D9 wasn't entirely animated like Avatar was I think that its effects were overall better. D9 didn't rely on the humanoid-like aliens that Avatar did, they were more alien.
I don't think either D9 nor Avatar will win Best Picture. No Sci-Fi movie has ever won and I don't think that's going to change. I'm betting on Invictus winning it to tell you the truth. Avatar will probably in Best Effects though. I hope D9 wins something though.
You just proved me you know nothing about cinema.
Right….a bafta member that's written over 200 reviews on films the last seven years knows nothing about cinema.

Hence the relocation project.

and you keep talking about things being realistic…... those were supposed to be beings with high technology (intelligence) but the 90% of them seemed more stupid than dogs.
90% of them were born there. The remaining population focused solely on surviving.
Not hard considering the fact that they had practically nothing. Which is proven by the time taken to build the escape ship.
Those mobsters btw were supposed to want to become as good as those aliens by eating them and shit, but the real purpose why they were in the movie was just to add up to the action scenes…I think it was obvious.

Cameron's graphic bullying doesn't cut the mustard.
Plus these 'nice ideas' your referring to, have been stolen from several films mentioned in this thread.
On the other hand D9 had just a good main idea which wasnt developed well.
Themes of racism and xenophobia are put forward by the movie in the form of speciesism applied to the aliens. The use of the word "prawn" to describe the aliens is a reference to the Parktown prawn, a king cricket species considered a plague in South Africa.
Clearly no developing went into this….?
And Avatar"s odds to win the best picture is 1.50 and District"s 100.
A Movie winning anything solely on one aspect of good filming isn't worth comparing.
Guys leave Gaara alone he has a Naruto name and ava so you should recognize that his taste for films is bad.
someone should make a spoof, combining the two
imagine
blue furries being eaten for their powers
jakesully falling in love with a giant grasshopper
win win

Avatar will win best effects but nothing major best director and best picture will go to The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Bastards respectivly. D9 I hope will win best makeup and best original screenplay.
Haven't seen District 9, sound like a good movie. Except for the nostalgia critic I hanven't heard someone say bad things aobut it.
As for the "biggest movie ever" part… you just can't compare movies today with those back years ago. Even if you go by sold tickets. See, Avatar is now in cinemas for about 6 weeks, still on ongoing. Today there are so many movies out there that after a few weeks, they're out of the cinemas. On the other hand, movies like Gone by the wind we're in cinemas for more than one year. There weren't nearly as much movies out there like today, so back then people who wanted to see a movie kinda had to watch Gone by the wind.
So I guess its a waste of time comparing those things. If someone cares for my thoughts
someone should make a spoof, combining the two
imagine:
- blue furries being eaten for their powers
- jakesully falling in love with a giant grasshopper
Starfox comes to mind. As for the grasshopper, I'll get back to you on that one.
Anyway just a quick recap on figures between the two.
(rough figures of Movie total costs)
District 9 - 30 million dollars.
Avatar - 300 million dollars.
Anyone here think Avatar is ten times better?
Better yet, both Avatar and Transformers 2 had a budget of 300 million dollars. So they're pretty much the same in quality .
@Kairouseki:

Just for the record, I enjoyed Avatar much more than Transformers 2.
I'm sure that if Shia Labeouf swapped roles with Sam Worthington then you'd change your mind.
Yes. Yes I would. I hate Shia with a passion. I liked him in Even Stephens but him trying to do serious movies, especially as the main character, is just horrible.
I lol'd at the last page. Avatar was NOT better than District 9 in anyway with the exception of visual effects. And even there you can make the argument that based on the budgets for each film D9 did it better with what they had.
The acting in Avatar better than the acting in District 9? Thats almost like saying Iraq is the safest place in the world right now.
gaara i suggest you go back and re watch D9. From your previous posts you really didn't seem to get what was going on in the movie.
@The:
I lol'd at the last page. Avatar was NOT better than District 9 in anyway
I stopped reading there.
in my opinion…
District 9 and Moon >>>>> Avatar
oh yeah Moon was fantastic
…That's what he said.
But yes, Moon and D9 were both fantastic sci-fi movies, though in different styles.

It is funny how an Alien slum in South Africa (maybe the most developed country in africa) seems logical and realistic to some people.
