Speaking of the Idea of Evil, I'm seriously wondering where Miura plans to go with that (assuming it's still canon and the context is the same).
Since IoE was apparently created by humanity's desire to have a reason for their suffering, I'm wondering what would be a good and appropriate approach to conclude his character in a way that prevents him from causing more trouble. That is, if Miura chooses to go in that direction.
-
That's easy, simply weaken the God Hand or allow the Elemental Kings to return to the world. The most direct way to erode their influence is destroying Holy See.
Idea itself is not directly powerful, since its existence is very far removed from humanity. It has to manipulate events through intermediaries, so it needs the God Hand to manipulate people/events to suit its ends.
Since the founding of Holy See, the God Hand have become more powerful and their enemies the Elemental Kings almost extinct. If Holy See collapses, the era of dogmatic superstition and fear ends, even if the Kings don't come back immediately, the God Hand will weaken.
-
so is there finally a new chapter or not?
-
Well there's nothing on The Black Swordsman yet, so I guess you will have to wait a bit. How unusual ~(-.-)~
-
Well good news there are spoilers out. Would post em here but unfortunately I am on my Ipod. Looking forward when scanlation is out.
-
wheeee *spinning in circles
! for a better visualization:
RwfHTEwpUPYI didn't realize at first but does this chapter have the highest amount of cute… ever in Berserk history?
-
so what exactly is the deal?
! was that giant thing fought in sea the sea god? was it just a civilian? is each civilian a tenticle, or its own monster with tentacles?
! and what happened to looking at that little girl and seeing some huge monster? was that just a weird feeling due to her being half mermaid? or what did they call them in this series.
! and looks like we will finally see mermaids in this series, based on this manga i'm expecting all topless mermaids -
I loved that two page spread. So, everyone in the town is a tentacle of the sea god. I can't wait to see the actual god.

! and looks like we will finally see mermaids in this series, based on this manga i'm expecting all topless mermaids! What they fought on their ship probably wasn't the Sea God, but only one of the Sea God's arms/legs/tentacles/whatever, just a small part of his body. Isma just told them that his influence and power rise when the full moon is nigh and the thing Femto pulled probably weakened the seal too.
! Schierke just saw Isma's biological Merrow heritage and seeing how comfortable she behaves while talking to her, there isn't anything threatening about her aura, so i don't expect her to be dangerous.
! Merrows being topless meremaids? I approve!
We've seen a lot of Isma too after all…
! So here is guessing that Isma's mother is somehow embedded in the Sea God's seal and that's the reason she can't see her daughter.
! Btw, is this some local god or is it the god of the entire sea, cause there should be some kind of Watergod/Sea God among Schierke's magical realm gods too... this wouldn't happen to be the same? -

Based on logic, why would people, whose habitat is underwater, wear clothes at all.
-

They don't, they usually put shells on their nipples, because they are so sensetive
Berserk creatures aren't sensetive, so screw those shells!!!
-
Shell bras are one of the dumbest ideas censorships could produce. I mean, take any legend about mermaids, does it desribe merfolk clinging molluscs to their bodies?
Sensetive? What, if not for them shells, they mermaids would get aroused just by swimming around?
-
btw am i the only one thinking of Rave while this arc is going on.
-
Shut Up!!! That's exactly the arc i stopped reading and seem to never continue…
@Silverblade:Sensetive? What, if not for them shells, they mermaids would get aroused just by swimming around?
Women tend to enjoy long showers and baths…
-
Should I start reading this one from the start? It's been on my to-read - list a long time and I regularly see people talking about it, but for some reason never got around starting it.
-
first question is:
Why would you ever start a series not at the start? -
Well, it's more of a general question on whether to pick it up or not. But sometimes I do read a series in reverse starting from the latest chapter from OM or somewhere and only later check out the beginning, just to see if I like it or not.
-
well begin at beginning, and yes i don't know a person who wouldn't recommend this manga
only reason it doesn't get discussed like mad and be most popular manga or manwa or whatever it is called. F*ing comic for whatever country is because it takes breaks once in a while

This isn't a choice, you MUST read this manga. It's a masterpiece of storytelling, though Miura goes on hiatus for a long time some times.
-
first question is:
Why would you ever start a series not at the start? As robby would say Berserk didn't find a voice until the "Black Swordsman" arc was nearly finished. It was just a rape/gorefest for the first few volumes there, IIRC.
I mean, the most OOC moments in Berserk occur within those first few volumes…third page, you see Guts porking a demon (whether he knew it was a demon or not is up to debate). Which makes almost no sense when compared with the rest of the manga, which shows Black Swordsman was still where Miura was getting a feel for how to go.
Black Swordsman is important for introducing Puck, Guts' Behelit and (maybe) the Guts-Slan first meeting. That's pretty much IT.
I didn't realize at first but does this chapter have the highest amount of cute… ever in Berserk history?
To think, this chapter might not have been if the Japanese law passed.
Then we'd have to wait even longer for the next Berserk chapter!

ah let me guess, because of this panel?:
(I get the feeling this innuendo was on purpose)
-
Haha, Great find!
He so did that on purpose! -
btw am i the only one thinking of Rave while this arc is going on.
Reason # 638 you should be shot.
-
finall y , but why did he make such a long break from writing?
-
Playing Dragon Quest IX and Idolmaster with Togashi /joking
As Robby said, apparently Miura writes a chunk of chapters and then releases them, takes another break to write more chapters, releases them, rinse and repeat.
-
It's probably the friggin' godly details in his drawings that make these common hiatuses so endless.
-
Wasn't it also because he's drawing the entire manga himself with no assistants or am I mistaking him with Togashi?
-
I am not so obsessed with Berserk that I can't read other stuff for a few months.
-
good chapter. I loved Gut's reaction to the transforming townsman.
Just tossing a knife in his eye. no conversation… action.
Having all the town waiting outside the bar in a silent group was creepy and looked great!
-
Wasn't it also because he's drawing the entire manga himself with no assistants or am I mistaking him with Togashi?
Yeah, he doesn't have any assistants. He draws everything by himself. Unlike Togashi though, Miura's art doesn't turn to shitty etch-a-sketch scribbles that have to be redrawn in the tankobons. Miura's high art quality is consistent.
-
Miura draws alone?
Figures. I guess, it's another editor joke to put before every chapter a sign "Kentaro Miura with Studio Gaga".
-
One more time. It takes him 3-5 weeks to draw a chapter.
The magazine comes out every 2 weeks.
In order for the release schedule to not be complete wonky and random, the MAGAZINE puts the series on hiatus until they have 3 or 4 chapters in the can, and then releases them continually until they run out. During those two months, Muira keeps producing the next two chapters.
If it were a monthly mag instead of a bi-weekly, breaks would probably happen far less often.
And while Muira is probably not working quite as nonstop as he once did when he had a more regular release schedule, he's not taking 3 month vacations either.
-
So that's how it works eh. I just assumed he was getting progressively more and more lazy or something. Good to know there is an actual legit reason behind the schedule.
-
this weeks chapter was great, I loved gutts reaction to that towns person talking about the sea god.
-
Unlike Togashi though, Miura's art doesn't turn to shitty etch-a-sketch scribbles that have to be redrawn in the tankobons.
Tangent, but why are Togashi readers so universally venomous toward him? Here we've got a guy who consistently delivered HxH and YYH before that for years and years, until he "fell ill" which could mean anything from developing cancer to having his hand all but destroyed. I mean even the Japanese fans are bashing him, it seems like a cult of unrelenting hostility.
No matter how I rationalize it, there's no circumstances that justify that kind of behaviour.
-
Having Gon turn into an adult gay stripper with a massive whip like hi-top fade also might have something to do with it.
Or maybe the entirity of chapter 299.
-
It's only a few people that are jerks about HXH. When it comes out it's good.
A large part of his hiatuses has been because he had two children, though. And he was doing those name-like chapters like 5 years ago or so and the volumes with the better quality have been out forever now. And Togashi has some really amazing artwork, too and has a totally different storytelling style. Plus he's running 10-20 chapters a year in a weekly magazine as opposed to Miura's 10 or less a year in a bi-weekly magazine. It's only people that like to complain that really criticize either though. -
Well, I'm not sure how the conversation got sidetracked to HxH, certainly a good manga, but the part of Berserk that deals with the history of the Band of the Hawk and Griffith and Guts' past is on quite another level. It's fucking BEAUTIFUL.

Just been rereading my Berserk volumes 1-14. Anyone who wants to look at the best panel in the series and one of the best in any series needs only gaze at page 133 of volume 6.
The buildup alone is fiction at it's finest.
-
That's a good one Airflow; the art and storytelling of Berserk are unquestionably awesome. Which language are your volumes in, btw?
-
The Darkhorse English ones.
Another awesome moment: "Among thousands of comrades and ten thousand enemies, only you made me forget my dream"

*sigh
….simply awesome
Curse you! You are igniting my desire to read it again! You are just as bad as Sea with hisher recommendations.
-
I really wish DH would go back and edit out their
mistakesweird TL's throughout the volumes. Berserk really does belong on my shelf. -
Yeah, I might have to invest in Berserk as well. It's just so awesome.
I'm not a huge fan of its recent storylines though. I'm just not interested in Guts having a "crew" like Luffy does. I wish he just kicked ass on his own again.
-
Even the most badass of men need help when going against Gods.
=\
-
Some do, perhaps.
But that's not the point Miura makes.

Gutts being on his own was an abberation.
Did you learn nothing from the Golden Age arc??
-
@JERK:
Gutts being on his own was an abberation.
Did you learn nothing from the Golden Age arc??
I think its you who needs to read the arc more carefully. You take things too literally and accept what you see at face value; Berserk is deeper than that. Just because Guts is around people during the Golden Age arc doesn't mean that he isn't isolated. Guts clearly is uncomfortable being around so many people, detaching himself whenever he can. His natural state is one of isolation: an emotional and social isolation from those around him, that manifests itself in the form of physical isolation several times:
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+05&page=27
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+07&page=115The REAL aberration occurs when Griffith forces Guts to join the band by besting him. Guts even describes himself as a "temporary visitor":
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+07&page=125He charges out on his own in battle, and he prefers to fight on his own:
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+05&page=89
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+05&page=101
http://view.thespectrum.net/series/berserk-volume-01.html?ch=Volume+05&page=128In fact, he leaves the Band of the Hawk so he can stand on his own, without being in the shadow of Griffith's dream. He wants to shape his own destiny, with his own sword!
What I have a problem with in the newer story is the whole "Let's have Guts learn to trust and be around people" theme. It annoys me. I understand that it is in place so that the protagonist can get over Griffith's enormous betrayal, but it's not my cup of tea.
