Yeah, I think Ace is going to die. I made the argument that Ace surviving makes the WG look rather impotent in carrying out its threats, and I don't think WB's death alleviates that enough, especially since what may have been the killing blow was struck by one of his friends through trickery.
WG needs to be strong for the eventual knock down during the revolutionary / Void century stuff.

Yeah Ace was 5th in the latest OP popularity poll. Deidara barely made it in top 10 of Naruto. Ace has more to offer, Deidara didnt.

I think it's because the protagonist is Luffy. This is why as a viewer we come to care about the resolution of fictional events. It's because we care about this character, which was created and written in a way which would be compelling to the audience. If Luffy were to fail the audience would be dissappointed and rightfully so. The audience rooting for the protagonist shows the story is working. Though the opposite may also be true, that we wish to see the protagonist fail, and that also shows the story is working. This is why I think most of the fanbase wish to see Luffy succeed, because the viewers are on his side. We are empathetic to this character. Now, there maybe viewers who wish to see Luffy fail, and that's fine too but I imagine they are in the minority.

For me at least, One piece puts a huge amount of stock in following your ambition, dreams and so forth. Yet Ace cast his dream aside, which can be interpreted as that he is not as strong willed as someone like Kidd who kills anyone who laughs at his goal.
Sammy, that was a well thought out argument. I've also thought the same about Ace being quite a lame character in comparison to Luffy, especially since he's the son of the Pirate King. You'd think it would be otherwise. I don't want to analyze his character to examine why he is the way he is. We pretty much know. He grew up with some want or dependence on a "father figure", something which he never had. Regardless of his dream to make WB the King, and the future death of WB, doesn't really suggest anything about Ace dying himself. We don't know what path Ace will take after he is say rescued. He could, 1. Aspire again to become the Pirate King. 2. Seek revenge against BB and the WG alone. 3. Join the Revolutionary Army. 4. Or join another pirate ship (unlikely at this point).
Knowing Ace, even though he set aside his dream to become Pirate King, I think the death of WB could be a life changing moment for him. He'll lose a father-figure, which he never had, and will aspire to be one of the greatest, once again. Again, Oda probably wanted to show Ace as being slightly inferior to Luffy in terms of their goals. Luffy hasn't changed one bit. He's stubborn and well… it's just his personality. He grew up differently than Ace. Luffy was surrounded by Shanks and his people. Ace on the other hand was defending the honor of his father, and resented Roger later in his life for whatever reason. Ace is just one of those people that will just bloom later in life, and that moment is now. For Luffy, his dream was set forth by witnessing Shanks and the life he had as a pirate. In essence Shanks was a role model for Luffy, in which Luffy later aspired to be greater than him, and any pirate alive. Therefore, WB's death will be good for Ace's character. Ace will need to have WB die in order to realize something greater. To dream and create his own goals. Oda has employed the theme of the "New Age", and to kill off Ace, a pirate with great potential would be wasteful. Not to mention the sacrifices Luffy has made to save Ace. Oda wouldn't have Luffy sacrifice so much and for it to be meant for nothing. Ace and Luffy have yet to show their true potential, and I don't think Oda would not allow for us to see that. I think what Oda will show us in this war, that the future of the young pirates will seem dim and dark, but they will triumph in one way or another.
I'd rather like to see what his future holds, even though it won't be as great as Luffy's. Not to mention that Luffy will need allies in the future, and if Ace survives, this will only help and enhance Luffy's chances in the future to become Pirate King.

You see, this is where heat comes into the equation, it's a simple aspect of the writing of any fictional conflict:
To make your hero's achievements and conquests have any sort of emotional impact you need to put him in a credible situation in which he can be beaten, but that itself isn't enough, the victory itself has to be credible too.
So Ace surviving collapses on two parts: a Whitebeard victory, that is, saving Ace, is complete bullshit no matter how it's pulled off considering the position of the pirates and Marines right now and, two, this is just another way to pump in heat for the eventual Blackbeard/Luffy showdown.
If Ace survives, that conflict, which has been built since the Jaya intro, and even before that with the Drum Kingdom rape, has been flushed down the shitter.
Ace as a rival is just another rival with nothing special whatsoever, in fact, completely inferior due to the fact he fights for someone else's dream. In a manga like One Piece, where the central theme is to follow your dream, he is already worth less than shit.

Words won't describe my surprise if Ace died. xD Not that I'd mind terribly, but given the way Whitebeard/Luffy have gone through so much crap to get to him and Oda's habits throughout the manga, if it actually ended with them failing it'd be freaking diabolical of Oda.
I also choose the last one, simply because he could have just died so many times already, there would be no point in dragging it out if he wasn't going to die right at the end. Probably right after the cuffs are unlocked and everyone is fleeing.
I don't see him living, he's old and sickly and injured badly. Unless someone like Bonney shows up and reverse his age or someone else has a healing type fruit which I doubt because he'd be healed already. Then you have Iva who came from ID. I don't think even Iva could heal him. Whitebeard would die from the treatment.
I don't see a reason to drag his life passed the ending point of the war if he just dies anyway. Just my view, there's no right or wrong, just the way I see it.

Ace is going the same route as Robin, from wanting to die to wanting to live again, while his backstory is being fleshed out. No way he is going to die. It's clear people want him to die because they don't like him anymore, but to think it will actually happen..
I don't think Ace will die for the simple fact his arse has been saved twice already by Croc and Luffy. If Oda was going to kill Ace off I don't think he would have teased us twice with the possibility, just to kill him a few chapters later. Doesn't seem very Oda-like to me.

There’s also a lot of talk of him being the son of Roger and having the blood of the Pirate King coursing through his veins, which somehow gives him an untapped potential that Whitebeard and Sengoku have magically seen.
There is no magic involved here. Ask an experienced martial arts master if he can't see when someone has talent. Why would it be different in OP? Old school pirates have that kind of 6th sense. Remember Blackbeard and luffy on jaya? I don't know if Sengoku has met Ace before but i agree that him going after the PKs son is more a political issue than a matter of strength even if he believes in it there is nothing to back it up.
This shows a lack of comprehension twofold: that Sengoku is employing a scorched earth policy against Roger’s associates as a symbolic show of power. One Piece has never EVER been about potential or innate abilities or bloodlines or familial ties: the single major theme is willpower, ambition, drive, goals, which also plays very keenly into the concept of Haki.

That's what he said. We don't know how it will after WBs death. Oda has shown me that he is able to perfectly in one chapter lay the ground for a huge step in Aces dev. He cares about his life now. He wants to live. He is glad to have a family which cares for him. That doesn't sound like "I want to die no one likes me i'm the son of an asshole where is mommy…."
In fact WB said himself he won't die without freeing Ace, without securing the future of his sons. What about that? Why make WB say something like that and just kill him like he was saying trash? Does it fit in your One piece views?

luffy has ties to the revs due to his father. He will meet his father soon or later. Luffy already has ties with ivankov and bo hancock but his main goal here is to save his brothers ass. And he pushes forward with all his might. This arc shows how much resolve luffy has and how ace situation changes.
Add in that there is no vested interest in seeing Ace “grow” from the readership: this story is about the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates and nothing more. There is no need for another rival,

It was never their goal to defeat them… Remember the meeting with aokiji was a surprise for them as much as the one with kizaru from whom they were running away. Magellan was never meant to be defeated... Luffy had to run away from him which he did in round 2.

Lol. "luffy and co failed to defeat strong opponents yet survived all" is now reason enough to accept that the reason why luffy fought all his way to the MHQ can die? No that doesn't work.
Of course ace can die but with the current setup you're lying to yourself if you think he will in this war.

No? And what about him struggling going by length into harming his health to an extend we haven't seen before just for a "no no sorry young one you will receive a major kick in the balls AGAIN". Which might be nice to see but it would be the same shit luffy had against sentomarou and kizaru against Magellan and against the numerous guys in the war who caused him so much trouble.
This war has basically cemented Luffy as the number one rookie bastard despite being knocked out over and over again by Kizaru without effort, this puts him directly in the nexus of the new era as the old dies with Whitebeard and Ace, which was the entire point of Luffy’s presence.
What makes any of you think this conflict will have a happy conclusion. Seriously.

Well I was reading some threads and seems like this could become a fun topic, my first try for a thread. Hope I am doing the right thing. (…........) Has really no one made a poll on Whitebeards death.
I think a lot of people don't make threads for fear of being flamed or standing in the light of attention as the original poster with your ideas on the line having to defend yourself.
Possibly be embarrassed or feel rejected if the members of the community think their thread is stupid. Not to mention a lot are just merged into other existing threads. So there is not much incentive to make one.
Some of that is the reason I've never made a thread, not even an introduction thread, mostly because I'd just feel to shy being the center, like a stage fright kind of thing. Funny how that doesn't effect me at all if the thread is someone elses. xD
