I just watched the trailer.. doesn't look like the sherlock holmes I had in mind (only read a few of his short stories tho) but seems like an entertaining movie nonetheless.
Sherlock Holmes Movie

So…did anyone see this yet? I saw it with my dad last night and I am curious to see what the general response (here) is. TLC, still frothing in rage? I thought it was great. As far as my knowledge goes of Sherlock Holmes as a whole, it appeared to be fairly spot on. Admittedly, like I mentioned on the first page, I haven't read much of Holmes, but did some basic research about him (and the film) beforehand. I won't go in to spoilers, but the plot, humor, cinematography, graphics, acting, and directing was (IMUO*) excellent.
-
Saw it last night. Thought it was a fantastic film. Loved it from beginning to end. Humor was great, had good pacing, the action was fun, etc.
-
it wasnt bad
i think the music and costume helped it out a lot
-
I think the music and costume helped it out a lot.
^^ Oh yeah, thanks taboo, I forgot to mention this. Music was great too.
-
But how was Holmes!?! That's the only thing that matters.
-
If Sherlock Holmes isn't a smartass asshole, then he's not Sherlock Holmes.
If anything else, he would be…...uh.....Lobster.
-
I saw this the day it came out and honestly I was very bored. It felt like a boring episode of House (since Holmes and Watson were like House and Wilson). I didn't care much for the black magic plot either. Most people that saw it already either agree with me or find it to be really good.
-
@Thousand:

A quick look on imdb reveals that they both have love interests. Why the love interests? Hollywood.
If [[URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes#Habits_and_personality"]this] is accurate, then I would say he was close to perfect on all accounts.
-

Doesn't matter what Wikipedia says. To play Holmes is not just about acting some of his character traits. Holmes had a certain flair of elegance and perfection that was nearly impossible to copy.
Let me ask this in a different way. On a scale of 1 to 10, how close was his performance to Jeremy Brett?
-
I plan to go see it soon. Really want to looks good.
If things get sidetracked, and I end up not able to see it, I'll definately get the DVD the first day it's out. Hope it doesn't some to that though :(

One could argue Jesus Christ was a womanizer from dusk until dawn, but chances are whatever source you cite isn't going to convince the angry mob from crucifying you on Good Friday.
-
i thought RDJ's holmes was more like Jack Sparrow if he were a detective
-
This movie was very enjoyable. I loved the interactions between Holmes and Watson.
-

And sourcing wikipedia is generally frowned upon by people who claim to know their shit.
-
I thought this was a great movie, everything was explained, and it stayed interesting throughout the movie. Only problem I had was that Downey Jr. was a little hard to understand at times, but that's nit-picky, overall great movie, gonna go see the sequel.
-
See I would have actually gone and enjoyed the movie if it was just about a couple of guys trying to uncover a mystery in the Victorian age. It could actually have been one of my favorite movies of the year, hell I love mysteries.
But no, Hollywood HAD to slap on Holmes's name for the extra publicity. The moment they did that, they had a responsibility to convey his character as accurately as possible. But from what I'm hearing, they didn't even try.
Love interests?!? Holmes the cold-calculating machine who has stated himself that he has never loved nor could never love because the emotion would mess up with his deductive reasoning.
Jack Sparrow playing a detective!?! Holmes was eccentric and arrogant and egotistical and downright crazy at times but not that sort of crazy. He had a reserved and elegant style with all his traits laced with wit and showmanship properly displayed at opportune moments and the rest of the time playing the all-knowing wise guy behind the scenes. He didn't go in your face with his personality not to mention Holmes's wit and style was far different from Jack's.
And that one scene in the trailer when Holmes was bound to a bed and did that penis joke still makes me want to vomit. It's not the situation he ended up in, shit happens. But the way he responded to her with that awful sexual innuendo that Holmes knew would be taken completely the wrong way (making it seem that he almost did it on purpose too ruining the joke). What proper Holmes would have said in this situation is something clever and witty describing his situation in an off-hand manner with plenty of articulation in order to calm the maid down. THAT would have been cool and interesting and awesome and just like Holmes to make the most of a situation with simply his wit and charm not this perverted slapstick comedy routine.
Sigh, the movie DOES sound like it's interesting and good and entertaining and probably the best thing out currently in theaters but I just couldn't bring myself to see it because Hollywood is dragging the name of one of my most favorite characters ever through the mud.
-
Calm down good sir. Go see the movie, I doubt you'll still be so aggrivated with it after doing so.
Besides, t could have been worse.
[hide][/hide]
Much worse.
-
It sure looks very promising, I'm pretty sure it would be worth 10 dollars. I'll watch it as soon as I can.

This.
Why couldnt they have just called the movie ANYTHING ELSE?!
It is NOT Sherlock Holmes

It looks terrible.
Old school Holmes is where it's at.

i wouldn't say it wasn't totally shit, but the only Holmes book i've read was the hounds of baskerville, and TBH i couldn't see RDJ Holmes hiding out in a field for a few months without revealing himself or crying because watson isn't there to hold his hand during a mystery
but it wasn't bad
-
Just saw it, t'was a fun film. It certainly wasn't Conan Doyle's Holmes(watch the Jeremy Brett series if you want to see that), but I've long since stopped expecting adaptations of books to be entirely faithful to the original content, so I quite enjoyed it.
-
Just saw it today. Was a great film.
! I LOVED how they had the villian for the next movie in the beginning of the first one. very cool.
-
sherlock holmes vs DR CLAW
a team up with inspector gadget is inevitable
-
This.
Why couldnt they have just called the movie ANYTHING ELSE?!
It is NOT Sherlock Holmes
What things specifically are wrong about the portrayal ?
A Sherlock Holmes expert (some professor fanatic guy with lots of Sherlock Holmes memorobila who's "studied" the works of Arthur Conan Doyle)
Said that in fact the film in cinemas is actually very faithful to the original Arthur Conan Doyle Books portrayal. -
Hmm, I think this merits a link.

But again, definitely worth a watch.

@LC:
I might as well see it. If you're going to re-invent Sherlock Holmes and piss people off no matter what you do, you might as well be as over the top as you want.

See I would have actually gone and enjoyed the movie if it was just about a couple of guys trying to uncover a mystery in the Victorian age. It could actually have been one of my favorite movies of the year, hell I love mysteries.
First off, your words have no merit. You have not seen the movie.
Second, the mystery of the movie is AWESOME! Sherlock Holmes has to deal with the supernatural including the dead coming back to life, a man randomly bursting into flames, and an attempt to kill massive group of people which I cannot spoil.
But no, Hollywood HAD to slap on Holmes's name for the extra publicity. The moment they did that, they had a responsibility to convey his character as accurately as possible. But from what I'm hearing, they didn't even try.
They didn't SLAP his name onto it. They made a movie faithful to his stories, and it is VERY faithful to his stories.
Love interests?!? Holmes the cold-calculating machine who has stated himself that he has never loved nor could never love because the emotion would mess up with his deductive reasoning.
And this is where your lack of not seeing the movie fails you! Do you know ANYTHING about his 'love interest'?
She is a criminal, CRIMINAL, who has successfully outsmarted him in several occasions. She isn't smarter, but they outsmart each other frequently.
Holmes isn't in love with her. He's in love with her brilliance. He has met someone as emotionally flawed but mentally brilliant as him.
EXCUSE ME! Holmes isn't crazy!?! What Holmes do you know? Cause I know a Holmes who spends his time (when he isn't solving crimes) taking drugs, sitting in a room all day, and talking to either himself or Watson. THAT is Sherlock Holmes.
He's not a gentlemen. He's horrible with women. He's only elegant in what he is INTERESTED in, and 95% of the time, that's the mystery at hand.
Throughout the movie, there are other plotlines (such as Watson trying to marry his love) that Holmes hardly gives two shits about. His only interest is the case at hand and a little lady.
THAT would have been cool and interesting and awesome and just like Holmes to make the most of a situation with simply his wit and charm not this perverted slapstick comedy routine.
First off, Sherlock (as I've said before) has no zero people skills. He has a hard time dealing with the emotions of others, including Watson. He understands that Watson 'claims' that he wants to be with his future bride, but Holmes doesn't understand why Watson is trying to resist the thrill of the mystery. Watson wants to quit so he can marry and live happily.
Holmes didn't speak 'sexually'. That's how he talks to everyone. He could be fully clothed, and he'd say the exact same thing.
And you can get over the slapstick humor yourself.
Sigh, the movie DOES sound like it's interesting and good and entertaining and probably the best thing out currently in theaters but I just couldn't bring myself to see it because Hollywood is dragging the name of one of my most favorite characters ever through the mud.
I know. Cause Hollywood is the devil! Horrible, horrible Hollywood.
Get off your damn high horse and see the fucking movie.
If you didn't like it, too bad. If you liked it, then shut up.
By no means was this the best movie of the year. It is a FUN movie. A great popcorn muncher flick. If you come to this movie expecting elegance and brilliance, then go watch something else.
Our expectations are getting WAY too high, and we're bashing a pretty good movie.
And if you want a complaint, I'll say that it was bullshit how well Holmes could fight. Holmes is a thinking man, not a fighter. Although they did a good job showing how Holmes CAN fight using his mind, his strength was a tad ridiculous.
Watson was a bit ridiculous too, but I accepted it.
-
Nobody has EVER done an accurate Sherlock Holmes…
When you see this, you've seen an accurate Sherlock:
Holmes: Well there Watson, It seems we've another case to- One moment Snorts a big line of cocaine Coughs Well... well... As I was saying, a Case to solve now.

^^^ Agreed.
Fantastic Movie. Seriously one of the better movies of the year. RDJ played Holmes Perfectly. JL was awesome as Holmes. The plot was intriguing and well done.
I loved how a.) they set up the villian for the next movie so early, and so well. b.) how one small scene turned out to be so freaking important
It is a must see movie.
-
First off, your words have no merit. You have not seen the movie.
I've seen the trailer and I know more about Sherlock Holmes than you can ever hope. I know how Holmes's character is supposed to be and what I've seen is not Holmes. People like Darkstorm who have seent he movie admit as much.
Second, the mystery of the movie is AWESOME! Sherlock Holmes has to deal with the supernatural including the dead coming back to life, a man randomly bursting into flames, and an attempt to kill massive group of people which I cannot spoil.
Supernatural crap does not a good mystery make. That's just a lame gimmick. Not saying just because the story has supernatural elements, it will make a bad mystery (there were many real Holmes cases with mystery in them, most famously the Hound of the Baskervilles) but acting like that's all it needs to make a good mystery is retarded.
They didn't SLAP his name onto it. They made a movie faithful to his stories, and it is VERY faithful to his stories.
BWAHAHAHA. A James Bond/ Jack Sparrowish Holmes who has love interests and speaks sexual innuendo, a thin, homerotic Watson, a bunch of kooky mystic mumbo jumbo. How is this close to being faithful to his stories? They didn't even try to respect the original content. They SLAPPED his name on to the franchise for extra publicity.
Doesn't matter. Holmes was outsmarted by Irene Adler and he admired her but she didn't become a love interest. Holmes liking someone like that completely goes against everything his character stands for.
EXCUSE ME! Holmes isn't crazy!?! What Holmes do you know? Cause I know a Holmes who spends his time (when he isn't solving crimes) taking drugs, sitting in a room all day, and talking to either himself or Watson. THAT is Sherlock Holmes.
When did I say he isn't crazy? I said he isn't retarded crazy like Jack Sparrow. He can be quite mad at times but an elegant sort of mad.
He's not a gentlemen. He's horrible with women. He's only elegant in what he is INTERESTED in, and 95% of the time, that's the mystery at hand.
Stop right there. You have just proven you know shit about Holmes's character. You're trying to defend the movie and shitting on Holmes's character in the process (ironically just like Hollywood). Holmes is a gentleman to the core. Even if he didn't respect women, he always handled them with great delicacy and care and had a hypnotic effect on them. Also Holmes shows a greatd etachment from a mystery because he believed if there was nothing more that can be done, than nothing more could be done. He could spends hours describing things like music or architecture without thinking about the mystery at hand.
Throughout the movie, there are other plotlines (such as Watson trying to marry his love) that Holmes hardly gives two shits about. His only interest is the case at hand and a little lady.
That's also bad and another reason why his character isn't being portrayed accurately. Holmes isn't omg 100% mystery freak. That is just Hollywood dumbing down his character with gross exaggerations. Sure he bitched about being bored in dry times but most of the time, he shows more consideration to his clients and arresting the criminal for the sake of society not stimulating his brain with solving mysteries.
And he sure as hell wouldn't give a shit about a lady.First off, Sherlock (as I've said before) has no zero people skills. He has a hard time dealing with the emotions of others, including Watson. He understands that Watson 'claims' that he wants to be with his future bride, but Holmes doesn't understand why Watson is trying to resist the thrill of the mystery. Watson wants to quit so he can marry and live happily.
Wrong again. Holmes was a recluse but he had great people skills, it was kinda important for his job. He had great empathy and understanding for other people's problems Also you're only proving more and more how bad this adaptation of Holmes is and just how bad a job Hollywoofd ahs done on him. Holmes is not a retard who can't appreciate the heart of a man. For fuck's sake, when Watson got married, Holmes was sad that he was losing a friend but he was totally understanding and said it couldn't be helped. He wasn't a retard who couldn't understand love.
Holmes didn't speak 'sexually'. That's how he talks to everyone. He could be fully clothed, and he'd say the exact same thing.
What the fuck are you trying to say here? That he'd have said the exact same thing if he didn't have a key under a pillow covering his penis? In what possible scenario? Point is Holmes said something he knew would be taken out of context almost on purpose. It's degrading to his character and it's not even funny.
And you can get over the slapstick humor yourself.
Do you even know what you're arguing. These are all points for me on how Hollywood is shitting on his characterand you're just going lol who cares when it's your argument that he was "faithfully" adapted.
I know. Cause Hollywood is the devil! Horrible, horrible Hollywood.
Don't try to make this about corporate paranoia. Hollywood is clearly taking a dump in this case.
@Insider2000:Get off your damn high horse and see the fucking movie.
Why don't you drop your shitty attitude and stop acting like you know two fucks about anything on Holmes's character.
If you didn't like it, too bad. If you liked it, then shut up.
If I wanna bitch about the movie, I have just as much right as you have to praise it.
By no means was this the best movie of the year. It is a FUN movie. A great popcorn muncher flick. If you come to this movie expecting elegance and brilliance, then go watch something else.
I'd probably like the movie if it weren't screwing over Holmes so much.Thata side, your entire argument is lol, who cares? Why the hell did you jump in all gung ho in the first place?
Our expectations are getting WAY too high, and we're bashing a pretty good movie.
I'm not basing my arguments on how good the movie is. I'm basing it on how well Holmes's character is being adapted. Any movie that's named after the main character should have the protagonist act, you know, in character.
And if you want a complaint, I'll say that it was bullshit how well Holmes could fight. Holmes is a thinking man, not a fighter. Although they did a good job showing how Holmes CAN fight using his mind, his strength was a tad ridiculous.
Holmes trained himself in boxing and fencing for years as a supplement to his crime detecting. Something you'd know if you read the books which at this point I think it's safe to assume you haven't. And what's really funny is how you go on and act like you know him better than me.
Watson was a bit ridiculous too, but I accepted it.
Just because you accept Hollywood's dumped down versions doesn't mean I have to accept them especially as I know the source material
I'm not asking for a perfect Holmes. I'm asking for a semblance of Holmes. With that said, Jeremy Brett's adaptation was god damn near perfect.
-
I really want to see this movie now. But why, again, Finnish release date of the movie is almost month away? Makes no sense.

I think this guy made some good points on the movie.

Hmmm… after watching that most intriguing review, I do believe I will have to definitely watch it. After all, how many Sherlock movies show the grittier side of Mr. Holmes? Plus the director seems to have add a couple of elements that are only mentioned once maybe twice in all of Doyle's stories. Those will be fun to pick out.
-
It turned out pretty good, the whole dark magic premise was pretty entertaining, and set up some scenes where you got to guess what really happend and i love those in detective stories. And the fights arent the typical kung fu schlock that every other movie fight seems to consist of but rather looks like a dolled up street fight with haymakers flying about.
But its really the chemistry and witty guy love that's present betwenn Watson and Holmes that makes this truly great. And as a hetrosexual male i dont say this often, but i found it kinda cute just how gay Holmes was for Watson xD
-

I've never read the sherlock holmes books, but don't let the trailer fool you, (though I'm spoiling a bit), there is ACTUALLY NO SUPERNATURAL actions taking place. Instead it's more a mystery of how the villain is pulling all of this off.
Like watching Scooby Doo (Let me finish).
And I wouldn't say the Holmes was a bad people person or bad with women from the movie, he just had a bad run in with Watson's girlfriend because he "deduced too far". Not on purpose, and he only assumed.
IDK about the love interest thing, so I'm leaving that alone.
Watson isn't fat, but he has a sword and the mystery is something you don't know the answer to, IDK what's wrong with that change. A little twist on a story doesn't hurt anything. I'm not sure Holmes was so much trying to break up Watson and Mary, but Watson just felt that way. Holmes just didn't want to lose his best friend, which is natural. He wanted to be part of the group, not so much ruin the relationship.
Now the Jack Sparrow/ Batman thing I'll give you, he kinda did have that role going. Holmes was a people person though, when he was thrown in prison he won them over quickly. Showed a lot about his character.
Anything else, I'd let you deduce yourself. I'd honestly give it a go, even though you're a HUGE fan, I couldn't see you hating this movie.
It's not Spiderman bad.
-
IDK about the love interest thing, so I'm leaving that alone.
Except for the photo in the begining i didnt really see any indications of love affair going on betwenn them, atleast not from Holmes side. I mean while she was drooling all over him did he even once come on to her?
Watson isn't fat
And Downey was apprently much to short to be Holmes but after seeing their glowing performences in this movies i dont think anyone really gives a shit about little details like that.
I'm not sure Holmes was so much trying to break up Watson and Mary, but Watson just felt that way.
Well he did pay a gipsy fortuneteller to try and freak him out of marrying her.
-
Well he did pay a gipsy fortuneteller to try and freak him out of marrying her.
I took that as a practical joke. Hell, I'd do it to my friend with the hopes that he wouldn't be stupid enough to break up with a girl because a gypsy told him to.
-
By it's lonesome maybe, but coupled with that the other times where he tried to make her seem like a gold digging skank. Or all the other times he drops little hints about how unsuitible she is or just plain rips on her for getting betwenn them it all adds up to him getting the "stay away from my man" point across.
-
I've never read the sherlock holmes books,
That's your first problem.
but don't let the trailer fool you, (though I'm spoiling a bit), there is ACTUALLY NO SUPERNATURAL actions taking place. Instead it's more a mystery of how the villain is pulling all of this off.
I have no problem with supernatural themes in the story. There were many Sherlock Holmes cases with spooky themes prevalent throughout. The Devil's Foot, the Sussex Vampire and even probably the most famous of cases, the Hound of the Baskervilles. My problem is that the characterization sucks.
Like watching Scooby Doo (Let me finish)
.
…And I wouldn't say the Holmes was a bad people person or bad with women from the movie, he just had a bad run in with Watson's girlfriend because he "deduced too far". Not on purpose, and he only assumed.
I don't care what kind of bad run in he had, he wouldn't have acted so childish. Nor would he have ever fallen for the trap of "deducing too far". Holmes was very precise with his details.
IDK about the love interest thing, so I'm leaving that alone.
You better, that's one of the worst parts that I could write a page on without realizing it.
Watson isn't fat, but he has a sword and the mystery is something you don't know the answer to, IDK what's wrong with that change.
What's wrong is that it's not accurate. The moment Hollywood decided to slap on Holmes's name to the franchise, they had a duty to accurately represent his character. But again, it looks like they didn't even try and just made up a bunch of random crap along the way based on stereotypes and what'll make fangirls hot.
A little twist on a story doesn't hurt anything.
Some slight changes here and there are acceptable. When everything about the character is changed so it doesn't in the slightest resemble what it was being adapted from, that's a huge problem.
I'm not sure Holmes was so much trying to break up Watson and Mary, but Watson just felt that way. Holmes just didn't want to lose his best friend, which is natural. He wanted to be part of the group, not so much ruin the relationship.
You don't get it, do you? In the books, Watson DID get married and Holmes didn't act like a lonely child playing cheap tricks. he was pretty accepting about it though a tad disappointed. This is exactly why you shouldn't be debating Holmes's character when you don't even know it.
Now the Jack Sparrow/ Batman thing I'll give you, he kinda did have that role going. Holmes was a people person though, when he was thrown in prison he won them over quickly. Showed a lot about his character.
Nothing accurate. Holmes had a great affect on people but not with criminals he sent to the slammer. They'd have ripped him apart instantly. And Scotland Yard would never have allowed him to be in the vicinity of the real criminals knowing that. And assuming Holmes did have an opportunity to win them over, he wouldn't try even for his survival. He detests them except for those with decent motives. He has his integrity.
Anything else, I'd let you deduce yourself. I'd honestly give it a go, even though you're a HUGE fan, I couldn't see you hating this movie.
I can see myself liking the story, the action, the humour, pretty much everything non-character related. But it will all be for naught because througout the movie, I would be cringing and grinding my teeth at every cheap, non-elegant ooc one liner by Holmes being followed around by a cocky Watson whose thinness would make me want to kidnap him and force-feed him lard. And when it got to the bit of him chained with the maid, I'd probably feel like clawing at my eyes till blood starts coming out. Of course I'm exaggerating but the point is the whole experience would be ruined and I would be wasting my money. It's a shame that they got everything else right but screwed up the most critical aspect.
It's not Spiderman bad.
It's probably far better than Spiderman but the story isn't the problem. I swear if the story was just about a couple of random Victorian age guys… But no, Hollywood had to connect Victorian times to Sherlock Holmes and jump on the publicity wagon.

I just tried watching the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, after all the hype it's been getting in this thread.
But i cant say that i was blown away, it was pretty good but a bit to dry for my taste.
