Good game is coming, according demo-walkthrough videos and couple pals. AND. Thank god I dont need to buy cons–-overpriced fuck this time (fukken FF12, make me buy dat thing, but it was good journey with dat game) points for Square-Enix.

The Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will not have Japanese voice option due to disc space limitation
HAHAHHA!!! STOOPID XBOX3SUXTY!!!!!!
Oh wait…what I meant to say was....
If I was a Sony fanfuck, I'd probably be rolling in my own spittle with glee but I gotta say, it doesn't make much of a difference if the Japanese VAing is a BLAND and TYPICAL as the trailers to this point have displayed in all its mediocre glory.
-
Well what'd you expect with character designs like that?
-
Hey, the English dub for 12 was absolutely fantastic, there's still hope.
-
Almost weird FFXIII's original dub will be in the PS3 ver since MGS4 didn't get the same treatment.
-
Eh, already planning on getting it for an eventual PS3 anyway, plus its at least nice to have the option.
-
I'm not huge on Japanese voice acting in my RPGs although I couldn't tolerate the English cast for Blue Dragon so I went with the Japanese one. Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery both had pretty good English casts so we'll see.
-
First glimpse on the english dub is already out, guys!:ninja:

That was one of the first things in a long time that I generally laughed at coming out of the bases of IGN. Hahaha!

This better be good…i like that they have monsters on the map like in FFXII and while i really enjoyed the combat in FFXII this looks just as promising and interesting. I hope they have something like the Mark quest though, those were really fun and a great challenge....but seriously all this is drama drama drama wheres the laughter >>
-
EPIC! Can't friggin wait for this game, it looks like it's gonna have a very classic FF feel to it mixed with the romance of FF8 (which was done great without feeling overbearing). Next year should be interesting.
-
Dammit, I'm sick of all these drama trailers. Give me a flippin' action trailer. That's one thing about FFXII, it didn't have much drama, and that was one of the reasons it was awesome.

Yes, you are right. I haven't even been watching these trailers for this very reason. Why can't they just show gameplay?
-

Because there isn't any yet. It's all been a very elaborate multi-year april fool's hoax. After 4 years they actually only have 5 minutes of CGI and nothing else.
-
Oh god, a Final Fantasy game with drama?! When did this happen?! Screw that, show us more of that stat-grinding gameplay everyone plays FF games for!
And what the hell, man?! They spoiled that Serah chick's death! She could've been the next Aerith!
Ah, well, I'dve probably hated her, so screw it. Man, though, I hope Snow isn't that mopey and melodramatic all the time. He looks too cool to have such a vanilla JRPG personality…!
Can't say I'm too fond of alot of these heroes so far, though. Except Mr. Black Guy, he's awesome and rocks face.
Finally, GOD DAMMIT GET THAT J-POP OUT OF MY FINAL FANTASY! Where the fuck is Nobuo Uematsu!? Someone get his ass back in here, they're not doing it right!
-
I doubt that Sarah chick is dead (why the fuck the Serah spelling, anyways?).

Sadly, SE's action the past 6 years have rendered me incapable of determining whether that was a sarcastic statement or not.
-
Well, it's drama and emo galore, which I'm not sure if it will be a good thing or bad. If anybody can pull it off, it's Squeenix. But they can also make it unbearable. I'm glad the demo showed there's still bits of light-heartedness in it (mostly from Sazh).
I will make note of two things though:
1. I'm liking the male antagonist a lot. He's already waaaay above Vayne in that regard. (much as I loved XII, I never gave a shit about Vayne)
2. Did I just see that? Do ALL the summons turn into vehicles!? From the trailer it looks like Shiva - Motorcycle, Ifrit - Car, Ixion - MechaHorse. -
i'm honestly not digging the summons= vehicles.
maybe i'll change my tone when I finally play it.
but seeing Ifrit jump around looking badass, only to transform into a shiny car and proceed to do 360 burn-outs and burn enemies with flame exhaust just seems lame as fuck. I'll take drawn out summon attacks over that any day.
-
I guess they felt that XII was too fantasy, not enough sci-fi, so they're pushing the machinery in this one. Still weird though.
And a quick check on wiki shows that Vanille will be able to summon Carbuncle, which turns into a disc.
-
Oh come on, Sasz doing flaming donuts of doom on the enemy forces is ballin' as fuck.
-
Well, that pretty much clinches it. I'm gonna have to buy a PS3 for this game.
-
Interesting thing I've noticed:
Final Fantasy 7:
-Barret: Father of one child, wife is dead, tough but goofy and loveable attitude.Parasite Eve:
-Daniel: Father of one child, wife dies in the first 30 minutes of game, tough but goofy and loveable attitude.Final Fantasy XIII:
-Sazh: Father of one child, wife is dead, tough but goofy and loveable attitude.…...What the fuck? (I love all three of these characters though.)
-
Oh come on, Sasz doing flaming donuts of doom on the enemy forces is ballin' as fuck.
I'm with this guy.
-
Looks like Square is unable to find a middle ground between FFXII's "WHO NEEDS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WHEN WE HAVE POLITICS!!!!!!!!!!" and this whiny drama fest.
-

I have a hunch that I'll like it better on 360, actually. Too many games are just programmed better for the 360 due to the PS3's horrible development tools.
-

The above post has been copied and pasted because it resonates with what I feel.
Vehicle summons = Lame at first.
But…...
I'll bet my least favorite testicle (not telling you which) that there will be a way to combine them into a giant fuck-off thing.
Otherwise just one summon and transformation per character is horrific.
-
Oh come on, Sasz doing flaming donuts of doom on the enemy forces is ballin' as fuck.
fine, but only acceptable if it's Sasz.
So is this the full cast then? no other main characters?
damn… whatever happened to the essential stoic badass?
Looks like Square is unable to find a middle ground between FFXII's "WHO NEEDS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WHEN WE HAVE POLITICS!!!!!!!!!!" and this whiny drama fest.
also quoting for total fucking truth!

I'm completely with you there. let's see…
j-pop.
Excessive "i'll protect you" plot..
hmmm Lets add some mech's in and complete the anime experience full fucking circle!
Although.. if the summons did combine, it would be pretty cool
-
I don't think this is the full cast yet. I mean, there's only five of 'em protagonists? LAAaaammeee…
As of now, I dunno what to think about the FF franchise anymore (not counting the remakes, spin-offs and all the milking shit), but it has been a big of a letdown since Sakaguchi and Uematsu left Square. I was hyped at first by FFXIII and Versus, Agito not so much, but now... I dunno. The story trailer doesn't seem to appeal to me that much, not because of drama overload or whatnot, but I feel like there's something lacking. That aside though, I'm eagerly anticipating Versus more than the main XIII itself.
-
I think I just realized the problem.
Final Fantasy used to rock right?
I mean, AS A GAME that serves as a stat-building challenge with visual rewards for crunching numbers, they're all fun.
But they used to be interesting too right?
I think it's because they've become more Japanese.
"Wot wot!? Are you outta yor bloody moind govnuh?"
Final Fantasy used to be about castles and fiefs and lords and ladies and shit right? But you also had some steam (not quite 'punk' perhaps 'brat') themes AND SOME Eastern themes. They used those characters and destinations but with kick-fucking-ass Japanese story-telling.
Now, one might argue that if you do a pallete swap and change some of the names from French shit to more English-friendly names, essentially the stories are the same, I would say that's not true. As the design has gotten closer to modern 'anime' styles in part thanks to Nomura's fucking everyone's mind into thinking what they should think is cool for 'anime' and games, the story has also gotten closer and closer to THEIR otaku culture, rather than what it was originally based on, OUR geek culture.
This was going to be a long post but that's my point so I'll end it there. Good night.
-
XII had character development!
-
Nine was the last one I really enjoyed.

Spot on.
Japanese is awesome and all, but Nomura is fuckin' killing the FF origins. I don't think this is because XIII is on sci-fi futuristic mode, though; it's more on the fact that it has somehow lost that FF "geek" touch as you have mentioned. Sigh. Oh well, let's see if this game actually turns out better than I expect.
But seriously, I want Sakaguchi back. And Uematsu.
Nine was the last one I really enjoyed.
Same here. IX was my best FF followed by VI.
-

Yeah, but XIII was designed ground up for PS3, so it'll be interesting to see the differences.
I know I'll be getting this when I get a PS3.
-
Nine was the last one I really enjoyed.
I've played all the FF's (except the online 11) and not counting the DS remake of 4, 9 is the only one I've RE-played this decade.
It was initially hated because of its "cartoony" looking-ness, but I think over time the characters, story, visuals, setting, and combat system have won it over as the favorite of the playstation era.
7,8 and 10 are good in their own ways… but I'm really in no hurry to replay 7 (since you KNOW its gonna get remade eventually, despite what they say to the contrary) and 8, while a interesting battle system... I'm in no hurry to revisit either. 10 I didn't even like the first time. 12... I clocked in 100 hours on that thing and I still didn't finish it. Slight misbalance between the side quests and main story I think. Beautiful look and design tho.
Eagerly awaiting the inevitable remake of 6 for the DS, though.
-
I felt the plot of six fell apart after the floating continent.
Thirteen seems really cheesy so far.

you too? I logged in about 80 hours in that fucker and never had the motivation to finish after a certain point. It was one of the later dungeons that killed it for me. And I really wanted to like XII's story too. There were some awesome moments and great characters… (Baltheir, Basch) that were given development... but others who were just kind of there (Vaan, ugh.. Penelo). I dunno, the story started out marvelously, but lost steam as the segments began to dwindle. They really had something there, but It felt hollow near the end, I actually wanted more.
Oh and 6 NEEDS a fucking DS remake. That would make my year!
-
Hahaha! Looks like we're all in the same boat. I'm at 100+ hours in XII and I still haven't tackled Giruvegan. But I WILL finish it sometime in the near future, because I want to play Revenant Wings on DS, but I refuse to do so before I finish XII.
I can see what you're all saying about the story losing some steam, but I still love XII to bits. Even with lost steam, I'll take it over sappy love drama FF any day.
-
This is actually one of the things that I LOVED about XII.
I could pretty much putz around doing side-quests and whatever the hell I wanted and it was still easy for me to re-enter the main storyline. In the end I clocked about 131+ hours on the game, everyone around level 53 or so.
Migelo and Gilgamesh were also pretty boss.
Oh and 6 NEEDS a fucking DS remake. That would make my year!
V first.
-
I stopped playing XII after I'd been leveling my characters for 2-3 hours and I had almost no progress to show for it. I started having the prickling feeling in my neck I normally associate with MMORPG's and quickly turned the game off.
So yeah, IX is easily the best of the bunch which is what I'd expect from a game that was meant to combine all the good things of the previous titles together.
-
Oh god, I'm so glad I'm not the only one that never finished XII (in fact, it seems like it's a trend). I think I've got over 100 hours on it now, but I just can't finish because I want to try and get all the sidequest stuff finished first, but I just can't motivate myself to do all of it and take on the final boss. Right now I'm in the "process" of getting all the Rare Game.
-
I managed to beat XII, but I always had to level grind for hours since every time I entered a new area it seemed I was horribly underleveled. The only character I really liked is Balthier though. Everyone else was just bland.
I think I had about 150+ hours total after beating it, but I'd have to go back and check.
-
Theres a great epic story in 12, and it probably would have been magnificant in a 20 hour game, or as a 90 minute movie.
But when you stop and start doing sidequests and don't get back to the story for 10 hours, it loses the momentum and immediacy. Works fine in the games that are about nothing but the combat and character customization, like 3, 5, Tactics and X-2, and a thinner story gets by. But the ones that are all about the story should allow you to plow right on through to the next bit. Especially in 12 where you basically put the combat on autopilot, which while brilliant and a great idea, and better than doing the same actions a million times, also took something away.
Needed evil in real time group combat, I suppose.
I felt the plot of six fell apart after the floating continent.
Lots of RPGs run into that. You play the game, clock in 40 or 50 hours, get most of your items/levels/abilities, resolve most of the character plots, chase down the final boss and beat him… and then you're actually only halfway through! Tales of Legendia especially had this problem with at least 2 proper endings, followed by ANOTHER quest... Shadowhearts 2 also had that problem for me.
Sometimes its great and it works, but usually it blows the built drama by taking out the villain and resolving everything, the rest is just bonus aftermath.
V first.
Play magazine did an interview with the guys in charge of the remake of 4. They said they were interested in doing 6 next, maybe.
Of course, that was nothing definitive, and marketing wise it makes sense to remake 5 first. But 6 is the one people are waiting for. (I hope Gau's beast blue magic is organizable next time…)

I gave up on the rare quests when the monsters started getting "invincible" as a status effect they could cast. It was cute when the Chocobo did it as a one time thing, but then it became a normal thing and so it just became a matter of outwaiting the bastards. Arbitrarilly extending any given 5 minute fight to 20 or 30 minutes for no real reason. (ANd the last last hidden boss apparently has like 30 health bars)

Indeed. Far too many do this, leaving you without a great deal of motivation to compete the game. I think Wild Arms was the worst offender of this(though it was such a great game I didn't mind).
Breath of fire 3 I think had plot pacing down the best of any RPG I've played. Quite a few others do it fairly well. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Vandal Hearts and Chrono Trigger spring to mind.

I understand the mindset. If you're really enjoying a game, suddenly a bonus quest after you think you're done and your in love with the characters and want to play around with their abilities some more yet, can be great.
Dragon Warrior 8 had a 2 or 3 hour subquest after you beat the game.
Pokemon only starts when you beat the elite 5, theres always a million more things to do and half the critters dont even show up till game over. (Though I have trouble being inspired to use anything other than the main party beyond that point.)
Chrono Trigger has new game+, which then inspires you to play the SAME game again, only with higher levels and end-game items. Its kooky that way.
You beat the last boss when there's still two entire continents on the map you haven't explored, or you're on disk 1 of 4, and its not fooling anyone. You beat the last boss after 3 hours of dramatic build up and your entire party and a huge final dungeon and cinema and unique music… it feels like you got to the end already.
I'm not sure why it works sometimes and fails others. When its extending gameplay with another bonus quest or something I suppose its one thing, but when its arbitrarily starting a brand new story that could have been an entire sequal game... I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with how completed the game actually feels at the time in terms of story and what you've gotten.
