I thought I would resurrect this thread. But then I realized I would have nothing to say, really. Errr. I liked the new album of Stam1na? And… yeah.

they are progressive rock bands, by the way
-
Not really a metal head but i cant get enough of In flames and Bodom. Two of the greatest live bands ive ever seen.
And the oldtimers like megadeath, Metallica, Ozzy etc all have their share of timeless classics.
-
AHHH, Megadeth and Metallica. My favorite metal bands of all time.

TOOL
I don't typically like metal music, but they're a sort of progressive metal/art rock sort of band. And are incredible.
HAIL MAYNARD!!!!
But yes, I love Metal. I think we should include Tenacious D as well, they are seriously awesome, because they do all forms of rock in humorous ways.
-
And if you are putting Tenacious D up, you can't forget the great SPINAL TAP!
-
Someone mentioned Saxon already? My favourite NWoBHM which I'm kinda into right now. Usually I'm more in the Trash and Power Metal area but some of theso old riffs are really good. Like

It's time to revive this thread! I never knew this existed and was just about to post a thread of my own (thank you search option).
The first page gave me a laugh. First post started glitching as soon as it hit speed metal (I'm resisting the urge to correct it, haha). It's also missing a ton of actual metal genres. And Tool? They're okay, but far from metal. That's not even touching the rock/hard rock stuff there.
Anyways, though, back to metal. This year's had some great stuff so far and has potentially better stuff on the way. Just downloaded the new Gnostic and Devin Townsend and they're both great. The former took me a while to get into, since straight up tech death doesn't appeal to me (aside from Nocturnus) and this album didn't feel like it was going to be an exception, but it grew on me. I can definitely feel Atheist's grasp on the songwriting, especially in the jazzier parts scattered through out. It doesn't have nearly as much prog/jazz influence as bands like Cynic and the aforementioned Atheist, but still holds up fairly well. The latter album is quite weird, but cool. Some of it doesn't quite qualify for metal, but the genre has definitely left its mark on the album. I might dare to classify it as post metal, but I'm not too sure. Pretty nice, though. Both relaxing and heavy.
To end on the note of a pretty obscure band, has anyone else heard of Hammers Of Misfortune? If not, you should check them out. I found them a couple months ago and I'm still addicted. They've got a sound rooted in heavy/power metal, but they also blend in elements of doom, prog, thrash and folk. Unfortunately, it's hard to get good videos on youtube (they've got a few songs, but they're missing so much, especially when they have a single isolated song that's meant to connect with others). I'm in love with The August Engine, though, and you should definitely pick it up.

Check out "A Room And A Riddle" in particular.](http://www.myspace.com/hammersofmisfortune)

I'm not that much into new metal. My favorite metal band HAS to be Pantera.
-
There are tons of great metal bands that have only come out this decade. It depends on what you like:
Thrash:
! _FjwSjAFiBM
Sludge:
! Bb3ep6YW0JI
Black:
! MMGO2ZN3Sto
Doom:
! zk3hoHbkZSU
Folk:
! R7WnZGkPuVE
Heavy/Power:
! LKbyfve_j2c
Grindcore:
! R_SqtCNhv44
Death:
! b9RJXWxth5g
All bands formed this decade. Take your pick. That isn't even close to all of it. The sludge and black scenes in particular have been thriving.
-
Folk metal is what I'm into the most lately.
Elvenking and Eluveitie are two of my favorites, they both put out extra folky mostly acoustic albums recently too.
-
personally i'm a lot into symphonic metal, especially as far as female fronted bands like nightwish (indisputed number one of this genre imho), within temptation, edenbridge, sirenia ,xandria, after forever and krypteria (but their genre is different, kinda closer to pop than metal) are concerned, but i often also listen to sonata arctica, dark moor, vision of atlantis, rhapsody and kamelot
-
Sweet, didn't even know there was a metal thread. I more an old school fan, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Death, Slayer, etc. Seen all those bands except Death(R.I.P. Chuck). I haven't been to much into "new metal", i think a lot of it is cookie cutter crap. But from the list above Necrophagist is pretty awesome. Nile has some good stuff too. I used to be in a Death Metal Band,i was the singer, but we never got anywhere( it was mainly for fun). A few of my friends still play though, only one is in a legit band at the moment called Hammer Horde.
-
Nile isn't so new. They've been around since at least the early-mid 90s. I find that a lot of the new stuff is pretty interesting, especially modern sludge. I think it defines the era from the well-known bands like Mastodon or Isis to the underground like Omega Massif and Kongh. Lots of post-metal influences and Neurosis worship. It goes hand in hand with the post rock and psychedelic scenes, which are apparently thriving, too.
That doesn't stop me from loving the old stuff, though. I'm a big fan of old school doom metal, death metal and grindcore. Love bands like Candlemass, Witchfinder General, autopsy, Atheist, Repulsion and Terrorizer. Of course stoner stuff is great, too, though it's a bit more recent (90s, which I guess was when the bulk of death metal and grindcore was out). Sleep and Kyuss are among my favorite bands.
Also, found that band you mentioned:
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=3540277151
I wouldn't be surprised to find your old band on metal-archives, either, haha. Viking metal, though, isn't really a genre and is really more of a variety of folk metal and/or melodic death metal with folk influence.
-

Your right about Nile, I should have better explained when i started listening to them( around late 90's i think), I saw them in Chicago with Napalm Death years ago, awesome show. Viking Metal is what Hammer Horde calls it, i think its gimmick trendy metal, but your description makes sense. Hey, what was your favorite concert you've been to so far?
-
Hard to say. Kreator/Exodus/Belphegor/Warbringer recently was great (though Exodus will never be the same without Paul Baloff). That and Gojira/Behemoth. I also got to check out Gigantour last year, which was great (especially since High On Fire opened). I, myself, have only been going to concerts for a couple years (I'm 17 now), so I've been to a fair amount, but not so many as you probably have.
-
I saw Behemoth when they played in cleveland with Morbid Angel
Behemoth is the shit.
I've also gotta agree with what you about said "Viking Metal" Zyordius. To me it's a crummy gimmick that actually limits songwriting potential. Sure a band can come up with riff after riff and lead after lead, but if all they sing about is Viking type stuff… i dunno, in the end it's pretty mediocre. Especially if the band has talent.
-
One of my favorite shows has to have been when i was with some friends and we got to see Napalm Death for the first time in a old bowling ally. Tickets were like 5 bucks(a steal to meet one of the founders of grindcore), plus i got to shake hands with Barney, i was sooooo geeked out about it for a long time.
Another great was seeing Morbid angel for the first time, they were on the bill with Pantera and Phil came out and did guest vocals for a song, f'n godly.
One last good one, again it was a Pantera show and it was Phil's birthday. Imagine the whole crowd singing happy birthday. Funny side note, Phil was started talking about some of the bands that played, thanking the real metal heads like Slayer and Morbid Angel and Ripping on some of the trend shit metal bands that played first(they did really suck, so bad i forget their names). -
Shit, that's awesome. Unfortunately, there are no original members left in Napalm Death, but they still kick ass. I'm loving Time Waits For No Slave. Scum, though, changed how I listened to music. At first, I couldn't get into it. I tried desperately to figure out what was so good about them and, three plays in, I learned how to separate the sounds in the song, so it didn't sound like the wall of noise I once imagined. Love that album, now.
Speaking of concert stories, I've got one from when I saw Gigantour last year. I was standing there with the crowd, waiting for Megadeth. The rest of the bands already finished and we were stuck there waiting too long for the main band to start up. Suddenly, though, we all heard a sound. It wasn't Megadeth, but, it was on the radio that played between sets: "Run To The Hills". We all started singing along to it and it seemed to turn into an Iron Maiden concert, haha. Eventually, Megadeth got up and proved their legendary status, but that one small event stuck with me the most.
-
Sounds awesome man, i don't think i've been at a concert were everyone was singing the same song. I know what you mean about not being able to get into Napalm Death at first. When my friends and i heard about it and listened, it sounded like noise, but after a little while, we could hear the music and totally got into it and other music like it. Funny how people can't quite hear Metal at first, you need a trained ear, what's that say about it?
-
Well, a lot of people are turned off by metal because they think it's a wall of noise. It's really disappointing.
-
Ha, i forgot about this. This is for all those who don't like metal…

i'm more of a folk person but i do enjoy sludge and post like pelican russian circles integrity and irreversible.

Check out Baroness, Torche, Kongh and Omega Massif. Four awesome sludge bands. Kongh is more sludge/doom, but I absolutely love their work.

I still remember getting into them by random chance. My dad went to Sweden and found a metal store. He knew that me and my brother were into metal, so he asked a kid for recommendations and came back with a few CDs. Got Counting Heartbeats by Kongh along with the self-titled Merciless, Death Breath's Stinking Up The Night and Serpent Obscene's Chaos Reign Supreme. The former's was by far my favorite. Kongh just released a new album which I love as well. -
^^appreciate the recommendations man, i've heard baroness and torche but never got into them since i phased out of sludge for a while after too much mastodon. i'm check out the rest and so far i like omega massif's exodus, aand i'll be watching the vids soon

What 'type' of Metal do Sabaton belong to? The songs I listened of them seem to center around WW2.
-
Sabaton's power metal. If you haven't picked up Iced Earth, Blind Guardian and Helloween, they are essential to the genre.
-
Has anyone picked up the new iwrestledabearonce album?
-
They aren't really metal. More of an unfunny joke. They're hardcore on the vein of failing to rip off Dillinger Escape Plan.
-
-
A few of my friends still play though, only one is in a legit band at the moment called Hammer Horde(Viking Metal?ha, i'm not a fan of it).
I had to laugh. I just got the august issue of Decibel Magazine and I saw a Hammer Horde album advertisement, haha. Looks like they're pushing to gain some ground in the metal world.
It got reviewed, too, with positive remarks.

I'll have to give their album a listen before I make judgements. I generally like the viking scene stuff, though it isn't such a widely varied sound.
-

I listened through this. Not half bad at all. The production quality's great and the sound is not at all lacking. It makes for a very competent viking tune that's able to compete with the major leaguers of the 'genre'. That said, it certainly isn't too original. I dig some of the changes in the vocals, though I wasn't impressed as much with the clean ones towards the beginning. A well written song that plays it safe. If I were to make a leap, I would say that the album goes along the same lines considering the limit to variation within the 'genre', so it can't be too bad, though it doesn't quite impress me. Might be fun to listen to every once in a wile, though.

Found this…Muppets playing Slayer, not too bad...

Iced Earth power metal??
You are surely mistaken… theyre far too straight foward and heavy for that.
anyway, anyone heard the new Dream Theater album 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings'?
Im loving it... so much better than their last album... that was just crap.
-
Power metal really is just heavier heavy metal.
I don't follow Dream Theater, but I found a promo leak of the new Municipal Waste. Not bad, but far from their best work. I'll wait for a cleaner version before I pass judgment.
And the new YOB is AWESOME. If you're into anything doomy, pick it up, seriously.

New albums from Divine Heresy, Black Dahlia Murder, Job For A Cowboy, & Jungle Rot.
All are solid efforts.

Metalcore and deathcore are pretty boring. Try some real death metal:

I can't wait for the new Baroness and Skeletonwitch releases. Both bands have new songs up for listening on Myspace and both are pretty kickass.
I also finally got a hold of Amesoeurs' self-titled and Jesu's Infinity, both of which are up for consideration of my top 10 of 09 .

Autopsy is pretty lame.
Needs more extreme.

Is this real enough?

I've heard a few Songs by Northern Kings, Can't say I'm really fond of
all this Heavy Metal, too much screaming. But If you like My Way, by Frank Sinatra, they performed the best Rock cover of it since.

Malevolent Creation's pretty good, but Autopsy is much better. Definitely a creepier vibe with doom influence. The Ten Commandments is a nice album, though. If you want something more straight up:

I wish more people could appreciate death growls. No one can get past the death growls, though, which I think is pretty stupid. As I've responded to those people many times before, the musicians know what they're doing and the death growls fit it best. I couldn't imagine Geddy Lee singing "Pull The Plug" by Death.

So very true. I like many different types of vocal styles. The times i laugh at them are when the vocals are so low it's crazy or when they have a strange way of saying things but i'm laughing in a good way, that stuff is great. I remember hearing Corpsegrinder singing Bloodlands live, he got really low at beginning and cracked up me and my friend. But if you want laughable vocals, see if you can find a band called Ground Zero. They were a local band around my area, sounded like a Megadeth rip off but they sucked so bad it was funny.

There's not much of a problem with Corpsegrinder's vocals, though I find CC to be boring in general.
I love general death growls in a non-comedic way. Where it gets stupidly funny to me, though, is in the realm of pornogrind, where the singers to these pig squeal or gurgling vocals. Those don't really require much talent, but they just sound so stupid through to course of the songs they're in. Then again, pornogrind isn't really a subgenre full of talented overall musicians.

Wheelchair dude in mosh pit at a CC concert.
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1920774
I've seen a guy with no legs in a mosh pit before. He was crawling all over, looked really creepy. -
No wheelchair guy could ever beat these circumstances:
-That guy is in a wheelchair at a concert
-That guy is crowdsurfing in a wheelchair
-That concert is for Bolt Thrower
-That guy is Jeff Becerra from Possessed
