Ener seems to strike the mind as being from an ancient civilization. Some say Egyptian, or Aztec or maybe even Mayan.
-
Actually his style reminds more to be some sort of Hindu.
He certainly doesn´t have any Egyptian, Maya nor Aztec characteristics other then that he doesn´t wear anything on his torso.

Kuro looks like a British buttler, also he's clever, but cold, definetively English
(I have nothing against english people, this just a stereotype of the English)
-sigh- Will the English ever escape from the whole 'evil' and 'cold' catagory… I doubt so, even disney drove the accent down into the ground, we now all can recognise a bad guy... Lemme see... Golden haired American... Nah... Wait, the black haired guy with the English accent~? Hell yeah... I always loved it with the first three star wars movies, you could always tell the bad guys... BRITTISH~! Wow, at least we got to take over a galaxy for a short while...
Seriously, if there is a nation that greets people more with phrases such as "Lovely weather" (as it rains) I want to know of it... We may seem cold and evil to those that only know us as the accented evil and the classic choice as the nasty one, but hell, if you are a Brit, you'll understand the secret codes that are processed through a conversation... Yes, we rawk...
Sorry to keep going off the main subject here, but I also hate the fact that it's popular belief that the English are made up of Gentlemen in bowler hats and Cockneys. Eeeh. What about Yorkshire? Liverpudlian? Devinshire? I'd just like to say i can mimick the devinshire accent better than anyone I know. Hoo-ya!
And, don't worry, I know you weren't trying to be insulting, and, i am not insulted, just expressing my distaste at mass off British stereotypes... Yes, Kuro looks like your average joe British Butler from about 1918... Suprising or not, we don't really get them anymore...
Back on subject, I reckon :: Luffy - Thai, possibly Japanese (Can't spell, I know) Zoro - German, possibly Japanese Nami - American or Scottish Usopp - Mexican Mihawk - Spanish (Buc's arguments are good, but that's just how I see him) Kuro - English -sigh- Morgan (SP?) - German Robin - Egyptian Sanji - English Bon Clay - French Foxy - A sweet transvestie, from transexual, transelvannia (SP!?) Arlong - Hawaiian Eneru - Indian or Tibetan(SP?)... Don't ask Kreig - Russian... Or Dutsch... I don't know... Crocodile - Italien Chopper - Swedish (again, don't ask) Yosaku - Japanese Buggy - Russian XD Hm... That's all for now... --Saito

Well to be fair, the whole thread is dealing with steriotypes, not just the British. ;)
Mr 2– Oh come on, he's an American ex-patriate living in France, it's so obvious! :P He's got the whole Jerry Lewis thing going on anyway.

Living in an area that is predominantly populated by Mexicans, I have a hard time seeing why so many people think of Mexican with Usopp. XD I really don't see much native american features in him.
-
Yes, I don't think that Usopp looks mexican at all! He looks more like he's Itallian! As for others, let me think…
Zoro: Southern Japan or Mediteranean area...
Luffy: Phillipino or Brazilian
Chopper: In the arctic circle somewhere...
Nami: Scottish or Californian
Sanji: Hmm.. somewhere in Europe...
Arlong: Jamaican Arlong would ROCK MY SOCKS!!
Mihawk: Definatly, no doubt, Spanish. -

**Bon Clay: French. UN DEUX TROIS!**
The "un, deux, trois," comes from his being a ballet dancer.
Anyway, here's a few of mine:
Foxy: Irish (I dunno, he always seemed irish to me)
Mihawk: Either British or Spanish (British because I think his design is based off of Francis Drake)
Crocodile: Italian
Igaram: German (since his design was based off of Bach)
Krieg: German (kind of a "duh" thing)
Blackbeard: British (realife Blackbead was British, too) -
Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought about these things! This is my opinion:
Sanji: French (pretty much everyone agrees)
Ussop: Arab
Chopper: Finnish
Luffy: American
Zoro: Japanese
Robin: Spanish
Nami: English (maybe)
Although Oda says his characters have no nationalities.

Nami: Scottish or Californian
Californian? I didn't know California was an ethnicity. XD
-
I think zoro is Greek because he has all tha characteristics
of a Greek swordman…..and Vivi is sure Agyptian!!!!
luffy maybe japanese and Ussop italian......
Finally sanji is French, robin is spanish and nami maybe scottish -
There is nothing Greek about Zoro.
-
I think zoro is Greek because he has all tha characteristics
of a Greek swordman…..Would you mind elaborating what makes a greek swordsman?
-
I'd say Zoro is definitely Japanese. HE'S GOT OLD MAN CLOTHES. (But his tan and hair color say "Ganguro" to me. Scary.)
Ener has always reminded me of Eminem, so I'd say he looks American. Plus all the religious stuff, he's a new age yuppie.
Donquixote Doflamingo is a New York fashionista (whose family has deep roots back in Europe).
Chopper: What's all this aboot, eh?
Luffy's grandparents or great-grandparents moved from Japan (or wherever) in Asia to America. He can't speak Japanese (or whatever language you deem appropriate) at all, doesn't understand the culture and can't use chopsticks. He dishonors his ancestors by getting expelled/dropping out of high school, due to his poor grades and tendency to get into fights. For shame.
-
Zoro seems meditteranean!!!!!and there is nothing japanese to him!!!!!
as for the others,robin=Spanish,nami=scottish,sanji=french
ussop=portugese and finally chopper maybe switcherland -
Anime!Zoro has a tan, sure, but it's freakishly orange (like those soul-sucking Ganguro girls). He wears a haramaki–totally old japanese man. He uses katana and his attack names are in Japanese (as opposed to English or French). And the work ethic (if you ignore the constant sleeping thing).
Usopp, though, is definitely Mediterranean looking.
(Do reindeer live in Switzerland?)
-
no Zoro is white and no a 'fucking'yellow japanese man….he seems mediterranean!!!
-
…that was kinda racist.
Can you tell me how Zoro is Mediterranean? All you've been doing is just saying he is, but you haven't given any proof. Give three examples.
-
Well Chopper is obviously from Finland since there are lots of reindeers. And as far as I know, there aren't any reindeers in north pole.
I don't think that Zoro is japanese, he actually looks kinda "neutral" so it's hard to guess. Just joking but he could be finnish since he likes to swim in winter and he likes to drink and his character is pretty gruffy. XD
I think that Sanji is french. And Bon Clay o_o| It's so obvious. So is that Robin's from egypt, I always thought that.
-
Heheh… seems to me that alot of people are saying their favorite characters originated from their countries. Is it strange that I find that halarious?
Anyway, Luffy resembles a monkey, somewhat. He definatly doesn't look Japanese, so I'm going to guess somewhere from South America. His craziness reminds of some crazy Brazilian kids in my grade, and he also... just sort of looks like one. With the messy black hair, and when he gets really dirty in the mud or something, you can really tell.
As for Sanji, I'm guessing French because he's a gentlemen of sorts, and a big womanizer. As far as I know, Frenchies excel at that. He also has a somewhat seductive tone. His "Frenchness" is more apparent in the English Dub.
Mihawk is French because he has a funny looking goatee.
Nami looks American to me, because she looks like a slut that you would pick up at a concert, what with all the skimpy outfits and breast implants. She looks Californian maybe...? Never been to California, but I get the feeling of that when I see her bathing suit, short orange hair, and general attitude towards life. Plus, she loves gold, and we all know of the Californian Gold Rush.
I'm also going to guess Zoro is Spanish. His tough-guy attitude sort of resembles one. He's pretty difficult, but his name is, indeed "Zoro", so there isn't much discussion.
Franky is American because he's kinda chunky, has Ventura hair, and carries around beer so he can get wasted all the time.
Chopper, I have no clue because he's... well... a deer.
Usopp is definatly Italian. His mom's name means "Dock/Harbor" or something in Italian, and he also has the bushy black hair. Also, we can't forget the Lying/Long Nose/Pinochio reference.
Robin is egyptian. You can sort of tell by her long and somewhat undeveloped nose which people from 1000's of years ago had. Also, she has flat hair that resembles many Roman/Greek/Mayan/etc god's.
-
I agree with Usopp being Italian but also Jewish. That would be neat. XD
CHOPPER'S FROM LAPLAND!!!
I think Luffy's kind of australian. All I can really think of concerning Australia is the large number of robust Australian characters in movies who throw themselves into deadly situations and have fun doing it…or fall on a stingray.
-
I think we all eventually decided that Usopp was an Italian Greek Jew. XD But looking at Yasopp lately, maybe he has a little bit of African blood too.
Sanji just strikes me as being European in general, nothing particular. Luffy's just Luffy. Darned if I could peg him for anything. Out of all the characters I think Franky has the most "American" look and attitude about him, though. Because he wears sunglasses, and Americans always wear sunglasses, says Bandit Keith. XD -

XD Him and Franky should team up. Keith likes machines too… Which Franky kinda is...
I'm babbling. XD

It'd be the greatest American teamup… IN AMERICA!
-
Hmm well to me I think that the majority of them are Japanese. I don't know why but I have a hard time imagining them being white. This isn't meant to flame anyone or be racist, but I think people have a tendancy of thinking that their favourite characters are their race. For example every white person I know thinks Cloud Strife from FF7 is white, but if you have seen Advent Children he looks pretty Japanese.
I think maybe those that hail from East Blue are mainly Asian. So Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Ussopp (except he looks Hispanic to me, but many Japanese and other Asian races have that skin tone). I think Robin might be white? She's from West Blue and she sported that Texan look. Sanji to me looks European, probaly French. If you look at a World Map, North Blue I guess would be mostly Europe? Of course this is just some wacky speculation. Chopper is… well Choppers a Reindeer, so...
Anyways I hope I didnt offend anyone, just my opinions.
-
The one which threw me wildly was Morgan.
I always saw him as white, until I saw an anime screenshot which makes him look light-skinned black.
-
Usopp: Cylindro-Proboscian
The Cylindro-Probiscians are a dispersed people, some (like Banchina) having settled in the Blues, whilst others are found near the middle of the Grand Line (Moz and Kiwi).
Sanji: CurlyBrow Northbluesman
Northbluesmen in general are known to be pretty tough customers (take Norland and Montblanc for instance), and the CurlyBrows are no exception to this heritage of physical toughness, strength, and stamina.
Luffy: Spiky Haired D
While all D's are known for their iron wills and generally easygoing attitudes, Spiky Haired D's seem to be more extreme in their moods; their laughter is whole-hearted, their sorrow tear-jerking, their tempers hair-triggered, their love all-forgiving, and their hatred ice-cold.
Zoro: Verdant Follicalite
Follicalites are common the world over, crossing ethnic and racial lines alike, but the same is not true of the Verdant Follicalites. The Verdant Follicalites are a dying race. Zoro is one of the last, if not the only, survivor of this proud people. It is believed that most of them died off during the Void Century, however due to the current state of archeology and certain government restrictions, it is impossible to verify this.
Eneru: Bajoran. Go watch Deep Space 9, you'll see what I mean. It's the noses!
-
I see Luffy and Zoro as Japanese. Hell, Zoro even comes from (supposedly) a village in the mountains that was Japan-esque.
As for Usopp, I always thought of Banchina as being white, and Yasopp being black or mexican. Usopp's basically a mutt (And I don't mean that in a bad way, his look is unique).
Nami seems Canadian to me. Hell, at one point, doesn't she wear something with the Ontario flag on it?
Sanji has always come off as French-esque. Hell, his attacks are in French, and like your stereotypical Frenchman, he smokes constantly. (This isn't an insult in any way, or not meant to be. The oldest man in the world, a Frenchman, smoked once a day).
Chopper is a Caribou. Not much more can be said. He's a deer that dwells in arctic/tundra climate.
Robin gives me the aura of a refined British woman. On the flip side, Calipha gives me the impression of a butch British woman. XD
Franky is definitely American. He's your stereotypical frat boy Surfer Dude. And he's super.
I dunno why, but Smoker seems either Eastern European or Russian to me. Same with Wapol, but he's a bit more obvious.
-
@Fire Fist:
Robin gives me the aura of a refined British woman.
See! I'm not the ONLY one who thought this XD Then again, I am British too so
-
See! I'm not the ONLY one who thought this XD Then again, I am British too so
See i'm British and i think she's NOTHING like a British woman in the slightest. Not even the stereotypical ones that Americans are so in-love with.
-

You live in London tho, if you look up near where I am, people act more posh and stuff.
-
I'll just say what I think about some of the major characters. A lot of this is similar to what others said cause they convinced me after I read this thread. :P
Luffy- Filipino
Zoro- Japanese
Nami- American
Usopp- Italian/Greek Jew XD
Sanji- French
Chopper- Canadian (even though he's a reindeer and whatnot :P)
Robin- Egyptian
Franky- American
Vivi- I know Alabasta was supposed to resemble the Middle East, but she doesn't strike me as Middle Eastern, so I have no idea.
Shanks- Irish
Morgan- German (his mouth piece has Möwe written on it, meaning sea gull (the Navy's symbol) in German)
Buggy- Russian (I agree with the Russian circus thing :P)
Kuro- English
Don Krieg- German (obviously, :P, since krieg means war in German)
Mihawk- Spanish
Arlong- Hawaiian XD
Smoker- I'd say Eastern European, but I'm stuck there. He might be Russian, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was German (even if Germany isn't in Eastern Europe :P) Some other European countries make sense too, but I stick by Eastern European
Tashigi- Japanese
Wapol- Russian
Crocodile- Italian
Bellamy- Australian (no idea why :P)
Enel- Aztec, or some other ancient civilization
Foxy- Transylvanian LMAO
Paulie- CanadianAnd I think that's all I can come up with. BTW, I don't understand how people can say that Bon Clay is French when he can't even pronounce "trois". :P
-
EGX just sent me a link to yet another magazine featuring OP ths month and since it's a minor one, I dunno if I'll be able to pick it up and there's also no interview with Oda, just Japanese comedians, but I did read an excerpt online and it was interesting in that it revealed the origin of the TB goons.
Now, they may appear vaguely similar in appearance, or perhaps just actions, or perhaps bits of both. Some design similarities are easily present but their 'tsukkomi' or slap-stick style are similar as well which makes perfect sense when you know who they are.
Anyway here goes.
Hogback and Cindry:
!
Nankai Candies. Japanese comedy pair where many of their routines revolve around the unusually large 'Suzu-chan' reacting coldly towards partner 'Yama-chan's' bubbly and positive personality. And of course the hair.
Absalom:
Atsushi of the comedy pair London Boots. I've never seen them perform since they don't usually perform now as their popularity boosted them to host status years before I came to Japan. However, Absalom's human features are similar to Absalom's and he was also notorious as something of a playboy.
Perona
Yeeees that's right. The 'vocalist' behind op12 was the inspiration for Perona.
NOW! Anyone see anything familiar about this line-up? Hands up!
Yes that's right, by no coincidence, these same three individuals were the 'support squad' for the promotion of Movie 8 during its release and their PR began around the same time as the start of TB.
Cool beans.
See now THIS is the kind of stuff Oda should be talking about at JF instead of showing us part of a movie we've already seen.
Now scurry off to OPWiki.
-
I'm glad you got the magazine from EGX. What a week for Oda interviews, it never ends! Cool that there's a lot of new information in this one though, and not related to Movie 10, even more awesome.
-
That's pretty neat info to know
idk if its just me but the show/hide spoiler box doesnt display anything
-
Works for me. If others have an issue just google 'nankai candies'. gotta catch a bus! laterz
-
I want to bang that Perona.
-
^^NF corrupted your mind…
-
So the worst character in the series was based on…her. Fitting enough.
-
-
i want to pass thru more than just ghosts of perona! :ninja:
-
Perona
Yeeees that's right. The 'vocalist' behind op12 was the inspiration for Perona.
That is HILARIOUS. Everything makes sense now.
Funny how all these little things connect. Thanks for sharing!
-
They supported Movie 8? Very villain-like.
-
i cant get that perona girl off my mind… i want to **** her.. seriously... :ninja:
-
open a thread and discuss it there.
-
Perona inspiration for crew member!! :D
-
the perona inspiration is a damn hot sweety:blink::wub:
but interesting facts of how oda was inspired by some VA of movie 8
-
I couldn't find her name, Perona's inspiration…
Do any of you actually know it, by chance?
