You realize Oda already revealed the cultural background for the characters, and Zoro "is Japanese," which I take to mean he would be Japanese in the real world.

Actually I didn't! It seems that this was quite new SBS-info so I hadn't read it yet, thankx for the info..:) But know we know it for sure, briefly.
But I still don't think that Oda wants to make any any crew member a perfect model example of the country that the character origins, and after all that list told us what countries they would come from(=what basic cultural traits/customs/looks they represent), not what exact ethnic/cultural background they might have.

But I must say that it warms my heart to hear that Nami would come from Sweden, altough I can't see anything especially swedish about her 🙂

First of all since there are no our world's countries in OP-universe, we cannot know what kind of ethnic mixes they have! For example it might be that there are no mediterranean-looking people at all, but instead something like mediterranean x eskimo-mix looking people, which is something that WE don't have. Also the culture and people's races can be mixed up there in a way that makes it impossible to speculate them.

I'd like to take Zoro as an example. Many says that he's a japanese, but according to his LOOKS, it looks obvious that his ethnicity cannot be japanese. Double-eye lid, straight nose and a height of almost 1,8meters refers to a normal western guy.
But his culture? It looks like he has come from a culture that resembles japanese culture, haramaki,katana,bushido-attitude and such.

      So
which is it? I'd say it's impossible to tell 🙂 And this is the way I think about the origins of the characters. Some characters might be kinda obvious but usually they are such and intresting mixture of many ethnicities/cultures.

    • RE: Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

I have a question that has been disturbing me for a while
it's about characters first names and family names
do they really have always the same japanese order; family name first and first name last?

For example, WB and BB...I find it hard to believe that it's really meant to be that Edward Newgate is Newgate Edward and Teach is BB's first name, not Marshall.
Of course it COULD be that way, but I think it would be plain stupid.

So...are some names arranged in japanese order and some in western order, or what? If so, how can one know which is character's first name? I'm confused.

I have wondered this myself, too
of course this CAN be surpassed, but it would have to be something so monstrous and huge that it could lose its taste...I mean I don't wanna see Zoro lifting up galaxies instead of buildings, but maybe we just have to have faith in Oda...he must know what he is doing 🙂

God I hate those sequels, it's so wrong to spoil originally good movies continuing them with extremely bad story and animation just for the money
(and who are those idiots who watch them ? :x )

And, I personally don't like 3D-animated movies, I have always preferred traditional animation, it just looks better. That's why it makes me sad that new animated movies(excluding sequels) are almost always made completely with computer. 😞

Jouluikkunat on iihania.

Eli ööh..otetaan me suomalaiset taas kunnia pukista itsellemme.tj. Ahih we are greedy ones aren't we.
