Since I don't for one second believe that Kidd will be the only one to go to Elbaf (or Kidd might actually decide to not land there, as indicated in this chapter), I think that the unknown person Vegapunk was calling is a giant with an eternal port to his homeland.
After all, what better or more secure place to go into hiding than the land of the giants, especially when they have the library of Ohara stashed away for Vegapunk to enjoy?

I doubt it’s a giant. I think we’re meeting the Sanji of the Roger’s pirates. It has to be somebody huge from the past.

@realtenchu Lucci literally did nothing to Luffy and was mostly treated as a toy.

He even admitted he was close to losing consciousness after those two hits you mentioned. Kinda pathetic for the man who lasted 30 or so chapters against Luffy back in Enies Lobby.

All I’m saying is that he was not walloped up.
To me lucci came out looking very good. I thought that Luffy was gonna knock him out with advanced CoC only but the fact that Luffy went gear5 and lucci didn’t get injured and is acting more confident than before the tussle, makes Luffy look really bad.

With the next chapter being several weeks away, I just want to drink in and enjoy Kaku fighting Zoro to a stalemate for now. It's not going to last, but for this period of time this man is avoiding getting walloped much like Lucci was.

Lucci was Walloped?. When did this happen, I didn’t see that.
I saw an incapable Luffy as always. Even though he has gain the title of Yonko, Oda once again failed to make him respectable. Lucci got hit twice and not only stood back up now he’s saying Luffy is no yonko, and he’s taking him down.
Yeah lucci was Walloped into not respecting Luffy.

Didn’t you see how Oda portrayed Luffy in the last 2 chapters, he’s beatable. If this were Kaido or Big Mom, they would have shut this down quickly. Kizaru would be going to egghead to recover bodies.

Is he gonna nerfed him now, make him look stronger later, is it gonna be a stupid unbalanced portrayal of strength and capabilities situation from situation?

I don't think there's remotely a way for Oda to satisfy fans that want Luffy's Yonko status to be clear and epic while also keeping to his usual writing style. After a chapter highlighting Luffy beaten up by his crew and in a cage and Buggy crying with a knife and hook in his back, I'd say Oda plans to keep things the same as he always does and fuck the "Yonko status" label.

Fuck the “yonko status” label. Funny how he didn’t fucked up the yonko status before Luffy and kept it as the pinnacle of strength and unbeatability. So scary and unbeatable were the yonko that even the Five Star were troubled and dumbfounded on how to solve the Big Mom, Kaido threat. So you’re saying that Oda ways of writing is that the minute Luffy reaches a plateau, that plateau becomes reachable and beatable by previous weaker characters or basically anybody. Again let me repeat, Luffy’s yonko status is not fake hype like when he left Totto land and with Buggy here. Luffy has proved that he has the power of yonko and beat one to become one. It’s not about what fans want, it’s about consistency. If Lucci is shown to match Luffy, that means that he could have also match Kaido which would make the writing inconsistent.

I guess if we want to theorize Luffy being treated like Linlin or Kaido in a way to shape the rest of this arc and keep it actually interesting.

We could turn Luffy into the unstoppable walking monster that cp0 tries to outrun and delay while they try to stay ahead and do their real mission.

Or we could have Luffy get ahead straight to the top of Egghead and wait out a timer until leaving while cp0 and any other coming factors try to reach him and face him in vein as he knocks them down or away.

Or I guess the whitebeard route and have him blow most of them away but then cause a serious distraction that opens him up to getting piled on by a large group for serious damage that still won't stop him.

You can theorize any way you want and Oda can do whatever but if lucci matches Luffy when both are serious and in a fair way, it means that Lucci could match Kaido, there’s no way around that.

I know Oda is trying his best, but he will never get Lucci's leopard prints to be consistent. It's impossible. Whether it's for the same chapter, page, or during W7/EL.

2 Strawhats carrying the Will of Ohara? This will go over great in the nakama thread. Wish I had popcorn.

It could just be a sensory map for Egghead, but that thing behind Franky looks like a solar system.

I'm guessing the "black suits" the locals are mentioning are possibly the CP5, CP7, and CP8 that went missing because they came in the normal way.

While there isn't much on a scramble for energy in the story, I think this can link to what Garp spoke on.

      • They each have internal issues (956) which is spilling out in the 8 Nation Revolution (1054)
      • The larger powered nations don't really go at each other on the surface
      • The "great powers" use resources as a way to influence smaller nations to fight on their behalf

More evidence to build up Lindbergh case as a possible MADS member. Not only was he the main one to mention repairs in the other chapter, some of the cylinders and overall parts look like what he uses. Even the monitor that Kuma was hooked up to.

I'm guessing back in the day, Caesar had the Beetles bob. I think this is the 1stt time his MADS membership been confirmed because the Vivre Card stuff seem tentative.

Perfect semester to take Physics. I didn't know that this would be the VP arc when I chose that class. "Energy is all around you" sounds like my professor. Luffy's reaction is most of my class.

The energy thing has to do with equality. Bringing the whole world to a more enjoyable and EQUAL living standards. Basically if most of the goods and services are easily available, there’s no need for kings and lords and elites which ties with what forest guy was saying about the world and its hierarchy. I think this was the whole war between the 20 kings and ancient kingdom. The kingdom wanted to give all living beings a more equal and prosperous life, the 20 kings said no.

I think Vegapunk might get killed here. He knows too much to be traveling around with the strawhats. Maybe one of the vegapunk survives but with lesser knowledge and that one goes with the strawhats.

Oda has a dilemma here, he either tramples Luffy’s yonko status by giving lucci an equal fight or he’s consistent and makes luffy curbstomp lucci in a stressless way or he could handicap Luffy with those boots plus that bear power and give lucci the first round. Let me make this clear, Luffy’s yonko status is not hype anymore like it was after Totto land, Luffy has legitimate yonko power, so lucci cannot be made to look equal to him when they both get serious.

So the ancient kingdom was advanced, what about the rest of the world?. Was the ancient kingdom helping, controlling, developing the rest of the world or they were just hogging all the advanced tech for themselves?.

What about the devil fruits, did they exist at that time, were they a creation of the ancient kingdom or just part of the natural world?. We know that the nika fruit existed at least during the void century.

The world seems to have gone backwards and more magical. The celestial dragons, the victors of the void century indeed wrote the history but for all their power and knowledge, they just can’t completely bring the world to heel. They can’t even control the devil fruits. 800 years should be enough to at least round up and store the most powerful and useful fruits.

Law law law my poor law, you think that guy has any poneglyphs?.

Think about it law. Big mom had one, Kaido had one, the minks had one hidden and the other no one knows where it is. You just beat Kaido and big mom, the coward won’t get close to big mom or Kaido. I doubt he knows the minks got one. Law, this guy has nothing that you can take from him. He’s a hyena, a bottom feeder. He’s been waiting for Kaido and big mom to die of old age. He got lucky that you guys took down the emperors and now he sees his opportunity to take action. He thinks that he can deal with you guys not the emperors and even still he’ll do it in an ambush and with overwhelming forces.

My dear law, you give too much credit to that bottom feeder. You’re in a Lose lose situation. If your fruit has long distance teleportation, I advise you to use it now.

I think that Doflamingo was talking about more than this. These people have had at least 800 years amassing all the power and secrets in this world. They have been creating and destroying and distorting knowledge and history. The have great control over the world and whenever they don’t like something, they go and make it disappear—————-> Now this part is a bit confusing cause they allowed the pirate age to be created and to prosper. They allowed pirates like Big Mom and Kaido to reign unopposed over their own territories, why that is, I don’t know. Maybe they’re playing a balancing act where they want most people to think of them as benevolent and the good guys and you need some bad guys around to scare people?. Or maybe they don’t want people to know that they have this type of power because they might revolt?. They were talking about some type of culling they do every few hundred years or so so they’re not shy on using their great power. But still the whole thing on when they use their power or not is confusing.

Bonney, that eddy where she was in was caused by an overheated event, implying that it could be the lulusia explosion, implying that Bonney was with Sabo. This could have been a side-effect of the explosion or a Last ditch effort by Sabo to save her. And if Bonney was with Sabo, we’ll learn a few things.

@Alfiere We've seen Koby do something twice post-timeskip, the first time he successfully protected the Dressrosa/Prodence convoy from pirates.
The second time he faces a Warlord and an Emperor so what do you expect?
And he looked better than Vice Admiral Yamakaji at least.

How did he look better?. We don’t know if he was targeted and avoided.

The truth is that Oda is going out of his way to keep this character relevant. He has done nothing, he is nothing.

I got a very low opinion of Koby. He and Blackbeard share a little to no feats storyline But at least Blackbeard got power, that we know, Koby has not shown none nor proven any. Sure I’ve no doubt that Oda will give him some unearned strength because he wants to keep him relevant but his feats are nonexistent which makes his few showing annoying.

I hope, I really hope that Blackbeard doesn’t use him as bait to lure Luffy and if he does, Luffy should ignore it. Koby is a big man with marine friends, let him handle his own situation.

And I say this, where was Koby when shirahoshi was being attacked at mariejois?. Where was he when vivi and Cobra needed him?. Where was he when Boa Hancock, another of Luffy’s friends was being attacked?. Oh yeah he was one of the attackers.

Nay I say. Let him burn and let him disappear. He’s not part of the Luffy world wide alliance.

@Ivotas lol, I don't think Oda wrote things like this (with Kawamatsu jailed) only for the sake of a barf joke... and I also don't agree that creating Onimaru does any harm to Kawamatsu's character either. On the contrary, I think one of the best ways to build a character is through their relationships, and this sidestory with Onimaru is super good for Kawamatsu. The inheritted will of the fox because of Kawamatsu's kind heart and passion is effective, beautiful and surprising.

Thing is though we already had enough to set up with Kawamatsu with him being the one to take care of Hyori first. The fox is not the only way to accomplish that thing. If anything it's another waste of space to have to things for Kawamatsu in both Hyori and the fox. One is enough, especially, if the reunion get's dealt with in a throwaway panel.

@realtenchu said in Chapter 1058: New Emperors:

@Ivotas said in Chapter 1058: New Emperors:

      @theackwardstation
That's exactly the point I'm making. We didn't need to have it that way. Asura Doji and Denjiro did set up things their way for two decades. Kawamatsu on the other hand has been captured which lead to creating a new character, which accomplishes what Kawamatsu couldn't for the sole reason to get a silly barf joke. What have we laughed!

The story aswell have been written in a way, where Kawamatsu has been collecting the swords during the time span of 20 years. Again, less time wasted and no silly barf jokes.

What did ashura doji set up?.
If I remember correctly his followers committed suicide at the 10 year mark and he gave up, said fuk Oden and went back to his old ways before he met Oden. He was even attacking poor civilians. He had a lot resentment against the akazaya and didn’t want to do any raid.

The one thing wrong I see with onimaru story is that he hid and didn’t reunite when Kawamatsu saw him at the bridge, I have no idea why Oda did that.

Didn't Asura also gather people that are part of the raid? I'm not saying it has been handled elegantly, with all the mountain bandid stuff that have been attacking villagers. But wasn't there this surprise reveal that they were still waiting for the promised day? Yes, many of his followers went on a suicide mission at the 10 year mark but not all of them. Denjiro brought only his Yakuza and the imprisoned samurai. But the invading army already consisted of quite a number of people before that. And those were not only minks and Strawhats and some random villagers. I was sure that there were plenty of Asura's people amongst them too.

Also wasn't it Asura who got the plans of Onigashima in the first place? Furthermore, unless I'm utterly mistaken, wasn't it him that provided the ships, that needed to be made battle ready for the invasion?

But I agree with the overall outlook, that it wasn't handled well at all. Asura was shown to be a complete asshole who turned their back on the mission until, surprise reveal, "I actually do care for everyone and I have been waiting for you. It only was really really painful".

I mean, what can I even say at this point, we're pretty much arguing that Wano was lackluster by throwing even more aspects in at how it was lackluster. If anything this even a further point to show actually spend time to handle one of the Red Scabbards well than a fox that doesn't need to be there in the first place.

I don’t remember well but I think most of the raid people were from Udon and others brought by the yakuzas. I do believe that ashura provided the Map of onigashima.

In any case everything is subjective, people like what the like. I wanted more Kawamatsu but with more rational. Why couldn’t Kawamatsu and jinbei sit down and talk fish stuff.

@Razh I mean, show don't tell? Franky doesn't need to say what he learned exactly from Vegapunk's lab when his body and personal robot weapon already does the explaining.

Same for the others. Sanji learned new recipes? Great, there's a scene in PH where he shows one of the recipes. He doesn't need to explain shit.

As for Robin, she already stated Luffy doesn't care much about his father or the Will of D., so she just has Law as a confidant since he actually cares about that. We actually see a scene of them discussing what they know, so show don't tell again.

We know since the descent to FI that Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Chopper all have short attention spans when others start talking complicated stuff, so it's a waste of in-story time to have them interact over what everybody else learned besides the basics.

Addressing some things would be nice, I guess? Just paint an awareness across the crew.

Basically, you're explaining my "lacking elements" complaint with "writing has always sucked in that regard" answer.

It's a waste? Sanji vs Page One wasn't a waste? Shapeshifting fox wasn't a waste? Green Bull flexing wasn't a waste? Plenty of waste to go around. What wouldn't be a waste is some quality time dedicated to main characters outside of battle.

Like jinbei and Kawamatsu talking, and Luffy and Marco talking, etc.

I wanted to see Kawamatsu and Jinbei talking. I don’t think Kawamatsu has ever been to fishman island. The only red scabbard that I felt should have had a deeper story. Can you imagine if he had thought of taking hiyori to fishman island to hide there?. Kawamatsu also should have known that there was a giant city underwater.

Poseidon is very fitting, a living being who has great command of the seas. I wonder and hope that aside from commanding the sea kings, she also has power over the actual water.

Uranus is the one I’m more curious about. What is it?.

The marines only send their top dogs when it’s an easy take. Didn’t you hear what the annoying new admiral that went after Luffy say?. If Kaido was here, I wouldn’t be here. I’m here because I think I can take these exhausted rookies. Ain’t I a stinker?. This is the marine motto. During the pirate age, the top dogs have never gone after anyone that can fight them back. whitebeard went after them. They got the that guy is too tough for me sickness but I would be happy to go after those rookies.

Jinbe's reactions to his crewmates have been great! If only he would have thrown Nami overboard or something... It would have been perfect.

      I’ll co-sign to that.
I understand that’s gag of nami beating Luffy but sometimes like in this situation, she takes it too far and too serious. Earlier in the series Zoro was almost up to his limits with her bossy attitude.

      Yeah

I dislike the idea that the title of Pirate King will get passed around so easily. Blackbeard may get it, but Buggy getting it because of a misunderstanding would make the title far less important. 1000 chapters trying to become the Pirate King and all Luffy really needed to do was bumble around until it fell into his lap. With an twist like that what's the point of spending one thousand chapters showing our main characters struggle; it would just prove that One Piece is too long.

I think the pirate king’s title has taken a backsit compared to the joyboy related storylines. Although the pirate king is related to joyboy too.

Who’s gonna give the title and what are the requirements to get it?. Isn’t it the WG that gives this title?. Why did Roger get it, because he got to Laugh Tale?.

If the requirements is whoever gets to laugh tale then I see a lot of people having a chance to it including Buggy.

@access-timeco A scenario I could imagine would be:
Big Mom is getting impatient with Pudding -> tells a Sweet General to seek the Man with the Burn Scar (if he's supposed to be someone who can read Poneglyphs, that's also how Kid could have learned about him), alternatively it could be the Sweet General heading for Three Eyed Tribe Island or wherever they are -> Kid intercepts him/her, steals the rubbing of the Poneglyph.

Still somewhat careless of course, but at this point I'm not considering it plot conveniance if the BM pirates are incompetent, it's just who they are.

Whatever scenario of Kidd getting the poneglyph from a Sweet commander, is just too convenient and stupid. It’s just Oda going the easiest way to make Kidd relevant. Apparently he just said, I don’t have time to think too much crap.

I have seen some people say that Big Mom pirates are a joke and this Kidd story just adds to it but the truth is that if you look at all the yonkos and their organization, Big Mom’s should be or should have been the best by far. Her main crew is constituted by her kids, many of whom are veterans in their 40s and with powerful fruits. She also had complete control of her territory unlike Kaido. Has she committed stupid mistakes, well other than hiring Bege, I can’t think of any. Luffy and a couple of strawhats besting her at WCI should not be seen as incompetence. Luffy’s the MC and he was gonna do that to anybody and he really had to struggle even with all the luck/help he could muster.

Absolutely exaggerated bounties for the Cross Guild folks, they have done nothing nearly comparable to completely dismantling a Yonkou organization like Luffy and Pals did, but I guess existing equals as much danger as beating up Linlin...

The only thing Oda has managed to do here, is dehyping the Worst Gen Trio bounties, those arent remarkable numbers, its just numbers you cant get by also doing nothing.

      Very well done.

So are you trying to explain Dragon’s reaction to the notion of Sabo killing Cobra?.

In related matters, what’s gonna happen when Luffy takes down the government?. The security that the marines provide to many countries is for the most part actually good. There are many pirates and bad guys out there who are powerful enough to destroy many countries. Will these countries be defenseless once the world government is down?.

I think the answer to that lies in how the world used to be before the celestial dragons took over. I think that many countries and kingdoms were in an alliance for security and trade and help, etc., and a very powerful kingdom serve as the main influential power in this alliance. I think Joyboy was the king or the heir prince in this kingdom. He probably fell in love with the mermaid princes/queen and wanted to marry and bring the fishmen people to live on the surface, but many people opposed this because of their racism and prejudice and that’s probably where we get the 20 kings who rose against the main kingdom and won the war and took over.

Maybe the world will go back to what it used to be before the celestial dragons

@realtenchu What the heck are you talking about? Luffy had the "little brother" relationship with both Ace and Sabo. Sabo was just nicer but he didn't spent as much time with Luffy as Ace did... If it doesn't feel so jarring with Sabo now it's because Luffy caught up to them. He couldn't stay the "little btother" forever.

I didn’t see Luffy mopping around Sabo and always crying. Luffy was a pitiful little chump with Ace and if this had happened before he met shanks it could have been passable but this was after shanks, Luffy was not an innocent little kid anymore add that he also had had Garp’s treatment but they made him into a scared little kid the minute he met Ace. It was a horrible storyline. That Ace Luffy future looked more like Usopp not the Luffy we got at the beginning of the manga.

As bad as Ace is, Sabo is honestly worse in quite a few regards. Ace for one wasn't as big of a Luffy fanboy.

I couldn’t stand Ace and his relationship with Luffy. I’m very cool with Sabo.

It’s ok that Ace wasn’t a fanboy, I don’t think people cared about that, but the problem was that the story tried to build Ace as always better than Luffy, always superior, always the big brother to little brother. Ace strong, Luffy weak, Luffy always crying around Ace, Luffy always needing Ace. It was horrendous the entire premise and extremely pitiful on the part of Luffy. Who the heck cares about fanboy, at least don’t make Luffy into this pitiful thing that has to be taken cared of by Big Strong Ace.

Sabo a fanboy?. At least Luffy is not waging his tail behind Sabo looking for attention and help.

@Daz said in Chapter 1057: The End:

The trajectories -or lack thereof - of Law and Kid over this arc feels so underwhelming to me. Their rapport doesn't feel like it has meaningfully changed, it doesn't feel like the feat they just accomplished together has really sunk in. It's just "Well, back on the road again, see ya chumps!", but as you say, Luffy and Law have been allies for 400 chapters at this point (more if you go back to Marineford), over the course of which Luffy brought down Laws bitter archnemesis, they've accomplished the goal Law laid out in Punk Hazard, you can have him be a little grateful, show a little bit of a pride and satisfaction in their feat.
And Kid entered this arc totally bitter and mistrustful of the whole alliance concept, but ended up helping bringing down two Emperors through the power of Teamwork, in an arc all about gathering allies to pull off the impossible, so you could have a beat of him showing begrudging respect to Luffy.
Like still have them bicker and macho-posture if you want, but it'd be satisfying to see a depiction of a changed relationship to Luffy, like how usually happens. I can only assume its down to them being fan favorites slated for reappearances later, rather than more arc-specific characters, but it still leaves the arc resolution flat for them, especially considering how personally invested they were.

Yeah, I think a lot of this sums up what was so "eh" for me. I wasn't expecting some kind of grand goodbye or anything, but even literally any acknowledgement from Luffy or Law of "hey, it was interesting working with you" after spending what was probably in-universe months hanging out would've been nice.

And in Kid's case, anything about him having an successful alliance with Luffy and Law where none of them betrayed each other and they accomplished their goal and some kind of contrast with that against toxic views on alliances from people like Kaido and Apoo (who went on about how they "always end in betrayal") coulda been something.

But nah, instead, it's pretty much just "ok bye". I mean, no doubt they're both gonna show up again at endgame if not well before that, but in the scope of their involvement in Wano, there wasn't really any kind of wrap-up, it was just, "Let's GTFOutta here!"

The "dick measuring" stuff had some amusing moments at first, like as a call-back to Sabaody but seeing how they'd changed since then, but got kinda old fast, especially since, as @desa mentioned earlier, sometimes felt out of character too. And again, that sort of "rival dick measuring" feels like a dime a dozen in Shonen, just pretty overplayed at this point, especially with a "rivalry" like this that feels pretty half-assed and like Oda tried to commit to it too far into the New World.

Well the reality is that law and Kidd gotta show some hostility and rivalrism towards Luffy to save some face. They’ve already showed some deference towards Luffy while fighting big mom. Kid said something about fighting for something greater (I don’t remember the exact quote but it had to do with Luffy) and law said also something in deference to Luffy, and then their unison resolve “we will not let you go up to Kaido”. They were very much deferential to Luffy, so this dick measuring goodbye is very fitting to bring things back to normal and allow kid and law to regain their equality with Luffy.

How about are you ok Kiku from Zoro after the fighting ended?. It adds to the story of Zoro seeing kiku’s arm. It adds to zoro’s character, gives it substance. Why can’t Oda understand this?. But no we had to have the AKAINU fanboy take what, 3 chapters for himself without any real payoff.
