Where would the split be?
I haven't watched it, but dropper is probably right, I remember roughly half the arc being about the birdcage

http://comicbook.com/anime/2017/03/21/one-piece-season-9-announced-by-funimation/
looks like they finally announced season 9
June 20 2017, no idea of how frequent they will make the releases this time.
So how will it go?
S9 - Fishman Island
S10 - Punk Hazard
S11 - Dressrosa part 1
S12 - Dressrosa part 2
?
I decided to start buying the viz translations starting at the beginning and I was surprised to see that they refer to Zoro as 'Zolo'. I recall this being a result of the original translation of the anime, do they still refer to him as Zolo in later volumes?
Love:
I like that it set in stone the Law/Luffy alliance that has been good for the series
Loathe:
Loathe is a strong word but I really like the body switching aspect, there were a few funny moments from it but I don't really like that trope
Story 3
Setting 1
so Sanji took the lunch with him when he left the window, my guess is he is going to feed Luffy with it.
I have to say that the Goa Kingdom flashback episodes were very good, perfectly paced, filler wasn't too bad, the animation was top notch
I keep wondering if Big Mom will actually be an enemy by the end of this. Capone is planning something, maybe Luffy comes to her aid and gains her support?
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I get that Oda is intentionally mirroring big events from the first half of the Grand line and that this is the same position that Nico Robin was during Water 7 but I think that worked because the crew and the audience didn't know Robin that well. It was believable that she may have betrayed the straw hats at that time. We know why Sanji is doing this, Luffy doesn't know but he know it is bull, Nami should know better….. It just feels like spinning wheels. I'm hoping that while Luffy is on his hunger strike we see whats going on with Brook and Chopper and that it doesn't drag out that long.
is Sanji's chivalry considered sexism now?
It's like Zoro's sense of direction, it will never go away.
Luffy has struggled against the main bosses subordinates before. Like the fat guy during Sky Island, or some of the random zombies in Thriller bark, Mr 3. during Alabasta
It creates dramatic tension, if he steamrolled everyone then it wouldn't be that interesting week to week. If he actually fights Lin Lin I imagine he will have some trick up his sleeve…
well that makes very little sense lol
so is that little girl the personification of his sword or something?
so the dragon kid is still on Zou too eh?
Lot's going on right now.
Who are the Vinsmokes?
What is Kaido's interest in the Samurai?
What's happened with Kaido and the Kidd alliance?
Blackbeard vs. the Revolutionary Army?
Reverie?
Really excited to see Sanji's backstory fleshed out more, I really didn't think that we were going to much more info on the strawhats. Makes me wonder what else we might see. Surely Robin has some relationships pre-Crocodile that could be interesting, or Franky before returning to Water 7 etc…
Gotta love the endless complaining that comes with a break. It's a bummer coming here sometimes because of the people who refuse to enjoy things
Has anyone mentioned the presence of Kaido's crew on the island?
wow a lot is happening simulataenously in the OP world.
Kaido vs the Kidd alliance
Revolutionary Army vs BB pirates
Reverie is coming up
The fracturing of the underworld
Darn it a break for this week
It's still better than the majority of Bleach and Naruto fillers.
this is true. 16 chars
I think Luffy needs a new crew member just to coordinate his new allies
I like to let the seasons build up and then I watch them all at once.
Just finishing up the Thriller Bark saga. Their adaptation of Bink's Brew is really great, fantastic couple of episodes. The Moriah fight was a little underwhelming truth be told, but I suppose the real highlight of that arc is the finale with Kuma.
I really do hate most of the filler in this show though, that Spa island arc was totally boring.
If you are living in the US I would order the box sets.
Hmm anyone know if they have plans to release a third one?
What's the best method to get legal physical copies of the manga
So next week is Japan's summer Holiday, or is it winter in japan now?
Perhaps the Kidd Alliance will team up with Kaido
The StrawHat alliance will team up with Shanks
That would be pretty epic
I think this means we will get a Shanks arc sooner than later.
months and months of complaining about Fujitora seems really silly now.
I think he will have an arc where Shanks is a major character. I think we will get his backstory.
Staple or not, it needs to stop at some point. Or at least take a break for a couple of arcs.
Same as time limit before an impending doom, royal families and princesses, allied marines and supportive citizens.
We're at a point where arcs are starting to be too much alike. You can hardly find a theme in Dressrosa that wasn't used in some previous arc in one way or another.
I'm not saying it's easy to write something original, but we could really use a change of pace. If it goes on like this, OP can only get worse. That's just my opinion.
He did take a break for a couple of arcs
Shabondy
Amazon Lily
Impel Down
Marineford
Punk Hazard
An almost uninterrupted string of arcs which don't conform to the formula.
Plus I think Oda is intentionally trying to have the opening gong of the new world mirror the entrance into the grandline a little bit. You have the first pre- New world arc be related to fishman bigotry similar to Arlong arc. You have the SH's meet a criminal secretly backed by a royal warlord who just happens to have gained the trust and acceptance of a nation through sabotage, a marine official working with pirates… and many more things.
I agree that I don't want it to become too repetitive or predictable but I do think some of that is inevitable given how long the manga has run. I think the that the best way to address this is to continue fleshing out some of the breadcrumbs from the first half of the grand line. We could have a shanks arc or a revolutionary army arc.
I'm sorry but I wonder how some of you guys enjoyed this manga in the past issues.
"Luffy has taken too long to recover from Gear 4"
He also got his feet stuck in cement and missed much of the Arlong Park fight
He got his hand encased in a giant gold ball for several issues
He got stuck in a giant snake for what felt like forever
He got stuck between 2 buildings in W7 for a long time
He got lost in Ennies lobby
It sure did take him a long time to recover from Magellan's poison
Removing Luffy from the action in serious or comical way is a staple of this manga. I really don't think 3 issues is too long myself especially when this arc will read pretty darn good once it is all said and done. It's a pain to wait for each issue every week, but I can't lie that every issue keeps me wanting more and I think it is great.
"Doffy is too powerful"
Crocodile steamrolled everyone until the water thing was figured out, including a high ranking marine member (hmm that seems familiar)
Enel literally died and was resurrected by using his powers
Magellan owned the number 2 member of the Revolutionary Army
There are many more. Something you shouldn't do is think too hard about this stuff. If you want to you can explain why Birdcage is so powerful, it's reasonable to assume that he created that thread from some kind of really strong substance and stored it for the use of birdcage, or that it is infused with Haki or something. But it really doesn't matter, it's a plot device. It doesn't mean that he's more powerful than Kaido or something. We aren't supposed to overthink it.
"Gear 4 is too powerful"
Gear 3 luffy also owned Rob Lucci, but it has limits just like all of his abilities.
"Fujitora blah blah blah"
He's a supporting character, why do some people want him to come in and save the day? Beside that it is clear that he has some knowledge of the special relationship that Doffy has with the WG, even if he doesn't know the specifics. He doesn't have the authority to interfere, which is why he's hoping that the pirates can take care of him on his behalf.
Honestly I think this arc has become just as epic as Alabasta, it is clearly supposed to mirror that arc in several ways. It will have huge ramifications for the rest of the OP world as well. I can't wait for it to be over, but that isn't because I'm not enjoying it but because I want to see where this story goes. The wait for 2 weeks is going to be lousy
I wonder if he is planning on wrapping up the Sabo/Burgess thing? I kind of hope it happens off panel, I'm really interested in the conclusion to this fight now and don't really desire any more interruptions.
Whatever happens I hope it is Garp who takes out Akainu
Was there ever a time here when people didn't perpetually complain about the latest chapter?
I thought it was good, and I think it will read much better once it has all been released. The wait is killing me, but I appreciate that it isn't rushed to satisfy the fans. It will be better in the long run.
I decided to read through most of the new World stuff and just got caught up the other day. Figure this is the best place for some of my thoughts/questions.
Why was Momo important to Doflamingo? Maybe that will be part of the following arc.
Luffy obviously didn't destroy fishman Island, that's probably yet to come. The only reason I bring it up is because Reverie was mentioned in Fishman island arc heavily and they also mentioned briefly in the current arc. I imagine it will be a pretty big event like the warlord meetings, or Ace v. Blackbeard thing.
Gear 4 is probably the combination of Gear 3 and Gear 2 right? It was pretty obvious that he was too weak when using gear 2 and too slow when using gear 3.
I had a thought, and forgive me if this has been brought up, but Dofla reviving himself like that is very similar to when Enel did it back in Skypea.
I thought it was a great chapter. Lots of actions and a really great cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next chapter each week, which is not the same thing I could say for the other manga I read.
I don't know what's going to happen, obviously the straw hats will get their party at the end, but how will they get there?
I don't care much about any of the Dofla crew, I'm anxious to see the strawhat fights. At least with Hakuba and Bart we have characters which we've seen a lot of build up over. I don't care much about Gladius or Diamante but I think we'll get some good chapters considering the protagonists of those fights have actually had more than a couple of pages spent on them.
Aside from Gladius and Diamante are there any more bosses not engaged with strawhats right now?
I think my problem with this arc is that I really don't know who most of gladiators are. I imagine this latest chapter would have been more powerful if I really knew who this giant fella was. I don't know if it's just me not really paying that much attention to the gladiators or if the manga just hasn't spent a lot of time with them.
Blackbeard was a no name on the WB pirates. Remember Shanks mentioned to to WB when they met to discuss him. Something about him biding his time and not making any big movements until the Dark Dark fruit popped up. What reason would there be for Marco to know the specifics of his body being unique other than the fact that he knows he ate that fruit?
I think his ability to have 2 devil fruits is certainly tied to the Dark Dark Fruit.
Recall that he is a Logia Fruit user, but the fruit did not alter his body in the same ways as normal Logia users. Perhaps when he consumes 2 fruits, instead of exploding as would normally happen, his gravity based body is able to keep him intact?
no way that Kyros joins the crew, unless he goes back to toy form.
I'm of the opinion that Garp should be the one to take out Akainu
I would argue that but if I do I'll have to make another account.
About his design, or his personality?
I'm sorry if I repeat anything which has already be stated, there are a lot of comments in this thread.
Part of me doesn't really want to see another member of the SH for a while. I feel like a lot of them don't get a lot of focus as is. That could be a result of reading the chapters weekly, rather than binging however.
Realistically I don't know if there are any characters which are going to join at the moment anyways. Jinbei is an obvious choice, and I think he'd fit in with the crew personality wise and he has a unique character design which I think is important for the SH members, but he's off doing whatever at the moment.
If he managed to develop the third one, he clearly mastered the second one. If he can sustain either gear and busoshoku, it's more than safe to assume that he overcame any initial problems.
For a long time the manga made it a point to show that Luffy was killing himself to protect his friends. Ennie's Lobby, Thriller Bark, the poisoning in Impel down. I don't know if we, as readers, should look at that as a prime motivating factor for the time skip or if it is still a problem for him today. I imagine time will tell, but I remember thinking it was a pretty significant deal when Zoro absorbed all the damage luffy had taken (or whatever happened at the end of Thriller bark).
Another random question. Sea Prism stone mimics the effects of the sea on DF users, a sort of kryptonite if you will. We've seen that even if Luffy is in the sea he can still stretch (in Arlong arc), so if he's cuffed can he still stretch? If not, does that mean if Chopper was cuffed that he'd turn back into a reindeer?
Does using Gear Second damage Luffy's body or has he gotten enough control over it that he's good?
