I am really having a hard time wrapping my head around a live action One Piece series that works without either losing all its charm and whimsy or else really corny.

RE: 920: "The Big Talk of the Town! Sanji"s Special Soba!"
I feel like it's been ages since I've seen Usopp, Franky, and Robin for longer than a minute on screen so that was refreshing.

RE: Doctor Who
But we know timelords can give more regenerations. With a life they want erased from the doctor's memory ( prize for good service or to forget a deep secret) the timelords would know to give him an extra one so he doesn't know the count is off.
Or they can retcon metacrisis didn't count and threw the doctor off.
But yeah I don't expect show runners to be really truthful. I expect them to be picky in their wording or vague and sometimes even lie.
That's….a bit of a stretch to say he just was given an extra regeneration to throw him off....Would be lame writing at best. There isn't any precedent for adding just one or two extra regens, also it's pretty clear that it's something that isn't taken lightly and almost never done for anyone except under unusual circumstances.

RE: Doctor Who
I expect it to be an alternate timeline thing where Hartnell regenerated into this doctor instead of Troughton. And this alternate timeline has something to do with the secrets of Gallifrey. My current theory being the one with this doctor is the original timeline and the timelords use the timeless child to become the ones from the timeline we know.
But even if it's just another secret regeneration I expect they will find some hole to put it early 5 but post-Hartnell.
I just saw a quote from Chibnall saying it's not a trick or a parallel universe. Show runners aren't always truthful, but there you go.
the problem with this regeneration being post Hartnell is then there are too many regenerations in a cycle. Unless - The Doctor has always had limitless regenerations (maybe that's what the timeless child means?) and just forgot and assumed he was given more later. There are also a lot of "Season 6B" fan theories out there, a lot of people have theorized for a while that there is missing time between the second doctor where the Timelords used him to do their dirty work before dumping him off at Earth as the third doctor.

RE: Doctor Who
That was a wild ride.
I wonder if chibers is going the whole hog and saying all those faces in brain of morbius were the doctor.
That came to my mind as well. For those that don't know, there was a push at one point to make Tom Baker the final regeneration, hence the unidentifiable faces shown in one episode. The same thing was done to the Master, so he was stealing bodies (much like the newest one did). Obviously they changed their minds about that, so those faces are just weird. Another interesting thing that a lot of people don't think about much: I don't remember which episode it was, but there was a scene with the 3rd doctor where he's hearing the voices of previous doctors in his head, and suddenly there's a female voice.
I think probably the most logical conclusion, assuming this is real or not some parallel universe, is this is pre-Hartnell. The second doctor was the first to use a Sonic Screwdriver. (Bootstrap paradox for wanting to build one?) Maybe people's theories about this Master being an older regeneration is correct. I think this new development lends some credence to it.
And yeah, Jack being back is cool. I had heard rumors about it, but since there has been rumors he's coming back like every season, I figured it was bunk.

RE: The Witcher
I suppose it's milk time then.
I'd rather see a second season than an anime movie though. Or a fourth installment of the game :^)
Don't worry, second season definitely coming.

RE: 917: ''The Holy Land In Turmoil - Emperor Blackbeard Laughs!''
The "colorful" scrunched up English text, behind the Japanese text that introduced him.
Oh weird, I guess I was just focused on the subtitles….
-
RE: 917: ''The Holy Land In Turmoil - Emperor Blackbeard Laughs!''
What were people watching that showed Jracule, I just watched it on Crunchy Roll last night and I swear I only saw Dracule.
-
RE: The Witcher
I just finished it. Now, I can't really say it's a particular good series. Certainly, the time line is very confusing at first, and I don't understand why they couldn't just put in a subtitle of where/when things were happening. (Hint for those who haven't started: Up until the last couple of episodes, if you see Ciri, that's the only time they're in the present). But, in the end I did enjoy it and I'm glad I watched it. I probably would not have made it past the first episode if my husband wasn't set on watching it and it was just me alone. I think it does get better.

RE: Why do people hate James Cameron's Avaturd?
Probably not, the real name is intact with a lot of the posts, it was changed later by a mod being mischievous….
-
RE: Ducktales- new series! Woohoo!
Hey, thanks to Disney+, I finally watched all the Ducktales! I can't believe how much I've enjoyed this show, it's so good.
-
RE: Doctor Who
I thought it was a strong opening, which will hopefully bode well for the rest of the series. Any time they're hinting at messing with lore I get a little anxious, but hopefully they won't do anything too crazy, I've had enough retconning over the years with Gallifrey.

RE: Doctor Who
I think we are talking moving the police box itself like when Unit picked it up in the anniversary.
But Im surprise that many companions know how to fly the tardis.
In that case, there are plenty of episodes in the classic series where the TARDIS was picked up and moved around by civilians. If you would like to see some nerdy talk about the weight of the TARDIS and how it has never been consistent, read this thread: https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/7951/how-much-does-the-doctors-tardis-weigh-from-the-outside
-
RE: Doctor Who
Capaldi managed to appear in like 3 roles in this universe so dont lose hope.
True, nothing is impossible, but this is definitely more significant than just a one shot side character.
Pretty sure humans have always been able to move the TARDIS around. It doesn't happen that frequently, but it has happened.
I'm pretty sure every companion from the mid 70s to the mid 80's piloted the TARDIS at some point.
Also Clara and Ashildr flew it. -
RE: Doctor Who
I'm stoked to see Sacha Dhawan in Doctor Who, but a little sad that he probably won't ever be the Doctor now.

RE: A Study of One Piece Animation
This is all new to me. It came out great though. Oh, people have been telling me to watch Sound and Fury for a while, guess I should.

RE: 914: ''Clashing at Last - Enraged Luffy vs. Kaido''
That was an incredible animated action sequence. One of the best in my memory.

RE: Ghostbusters(2020)
Fans wanted that because the show heavily played up her and Egon. It wasn't so much a thing in the actual first movie.
I didn't watch the show. I got that from watching the movie.
Wasn't Egon pretty asexual? Didn't feel a love vibe there.
Not that i cared for the Moranis pair up but atleast we know he liked women
Asexual people can fall in love. :p
-
RE: Ghostbusters(2020)
I'm interested. Setting it in a small town with Igon's family could work as long as the plot makes sense. I hope we see Grandma Janine (She married Igon, right?).
That' what fans always wanted, but for some reason in the terrible sequel they paired her up with Louis.
-
RE: Ghostbusters(2020)
Honestly, I think this new movie could be good. Hollywood trailers are always generic as hell, but it has me interested.
-
RE: 910: ''The Samurai's Legend - The Man Roger Admired!''
Yeah there is. You'll notice how if you go back to a few shots in that scene and notice someone unaccounted for.
Thanks, I'll watch it again.
-
RE: 910: ''The Samurai's Legend - The Man Roger Admired!''
OK, I have a question, because this bothered me all the way through the next few episodes. They just left Momonosuke's sister to die in the fire? I get why his mom would just stay there, but um, her daughter? If there is an explanation for this later (I have read no further in the manga) then just say so and I'll see what happens, but that all just seemed really wrong in the context. Even if there is an explanation, I don't see how everyone in the room at the time acted like everything was ok, like she didn't even exist.

RE: Non-Disney animation thread
Super excited about the Bone series! I too hope it's 2D. I like the style they're using for the Klaus movie. It's not exactly traditional, but it's close enough. Same with the Spider Verse movie, I feel like they found a way to modernize the 2D look in a way that doesn't make people think it's stepping backwards (which is a dumb notion anyway).

RE: General Anime Discussion Thread
Getting a guest pass or subbing for a month. Won't have to worry about commercials if you do that.
Besides that, because I just canceled my premium subscription because I really need to save money. Of course if I can find someone with a guest pass, that'd be great.
-
RE: General Anime Discussion Thread
I'm stuck not being able to watch past episode 899 on Crunchyroll because 900 always wants to start with a commercial that freezes at the same spot every time. What's my next best option?

RE: RIP Those We Lost in 2019

RE: Disney animation thread
Can a post be fully deleted? Why is that porn list being left there?
I reported it, guess nobody has had time to get it yet.
-
RE: 896: "Side Story! Luffy vs. the Carbonation King"
They really need to stop trying to come up with weird laughs. They just keep getting more annoying.
So, uh, the old eye catchers returned…
Well, they weren't in Wano…
-
RE: Doctor Who
Does Big Finish pay well?
Also are they usually usually good or do you need to find a list for the good ones?
According to the actors, they have said they pay well.
I'd say that the audios vary in quality, but that's also somewhat subject to personal taste. There are lists out there from bloggers that rate what they think are the best ones. I did follow some of those recommendations with success. But there are some that were rated low that I loved and some that were highly rated that I didn't care for.

RE: Doctor Who
Oh, I'm sure Matt Smith will be on it sooner than later, he's just busy.
Eccleston though seems to want nothing to do with the franchise ever again.
And of course they love it. Its voice work. Go in for a couple hours, get an easy paycheck, be surrounded by people that love your work and old castmates, and get positive reception from the fans. Its really a no brainer, especially as they get older.
My point was both Janet Fielding and Tom Baker wanted nothing to do with franchise ever again for a long time too. Especially Janet Fielding. She was super anti-Doctor Who from the time she left the show all the way up until probably when she decided to try Big Finish.
-
RE: 893: "O-Tama Appears - Luffy vs. the Kaido Army!"
I cringed when Luffy did his Naruto running. This will never look not stupid :D
lol… glad it wasn't just me who noticed that.
-
RE: Doctor Who
It wouldn't surprise me if Eccleston and Smith do eventually take up the Big Finish offer. It did take YEARS of convincing to get Tom Baker to do it, same with Janet Fielding, who originally was like "ok, I'll do one then kill my character" but now they love it.

RE: One Piece Opening 22: "Over The Top" by Hiroshi Kitadani (7th July)
It's too early for me to comment on the song I guess. Typically, I have disliked most of the songs when they're new and like them by the time they're done, with a couple of exceptions where I loved them at the start (We Are, Kokoro No Chizu) and some that never grew on me. (I couldn't tell you their names unless I looked them up). There are probably 4 or 5 songs that get stuck in my head randomly even if I haven't heard them in years.
-
RE: 892: ''The Land of Wano! To the Land of Samurai Where Cherry Blossoms Dance''
@Miss:
Oh honey lol. Every arc starts out strong. The first few episodes of WCI were also amazing (BM's musical intro comes to mind) – then the crappy filler comes in. And the sloppy background art. And we're back where we started the more it catches up to the manga.
Excited for what we got; not getting my hopes up.Yeah, I get that…I'm sure there will be some dips in quality...but this is definitely the most different experience I've ever had coming into new arc ever.

RE: Pixar movies
Dark Horse losing the license to Star Wars as their bread and butter maybe hurt them?
-
RE: Non-Disney animation thread
But like what most CN stuff? Most cartoons on CN have very different artstyles, including OK K.O. and Gumball: two of the most visually interesting cartoon series to come out of the west. On the rest of the lineup, what two shows really look alike? We Bare Bears and Teen Titans Go? Victor & Valentino and Summer Camp Island? I guess maybe you could make an argument about Steven Universe and Craig of the Creek, but the showrunners on Craig of the Creek literally worked Steven Universe as their previous job and the shows still look nothing alike. If you extend to adult swim, within the year we got both Tigtone and The Shivering Truth, which both have really standout unique styles. Ballmasterz 9009 didn't come out too long ago either.
On CG films, that's sort of a loaded category, since Pixar started the trend, Disney bought them and the two combined produce most modern CG animated film by volume. Even those have very different styles from film to film (not counting movies within a franchise and maybe the Disney Princess flicks). If you want big departures, though, recent history gave us the Lego Movies and of course Spiderverse. And this is all supposing CG films meant to look CG, and not including stuff like the Marvel films or the Jungle Book and upcoming Lion King, which all hinge on animation. And then the CG category ignores the continued existence of new 2D animated films like Cartoon Saloon's brilliant output like Breadwinner or new anime films like Lu Over the Wall. Not to mention that CG also excludes stop-motion films like Isle of Dogs or Missing Link. And the film category ignores 3D animated shows like Land of the Lustrous, which looks gorgeous in its own way.
All of these things are visually distinct, mostly unique and from within the last few years (Gumball goes back to 2008 I guess, but it's ongoing).Honestly, most of the CN shows look cut from the same cloth to me. I pulled up the CN app the other night (unsuccessfully trying to watch the latest Steven Universe episodes), and it just struck me how much alike they all seem, not just in style and aesthetic, it's hard to explain exactly. I think every era has a particular aesthetic. I like that Gumball uses a mixture of different media but the actual character design never did anything for me. That's just a personal preference. I guess what's on CN is a lot more interesting than the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon right now. What IS Nick even showing now, I haven't turned it on in years.
I really want more stuff like Spiderverse, more stop motion, more efforts that just gets out of the idea of trying to look like the average Pixar movie. Into the Spiderverse was to me the most exciting thing I've seen in Animation ever.
Take the Love, Death + Robots shorts. They were all pretty good, but most of the CGI stuff was boring stylistically, even if it was very well rendered. -
RE: Non-Disney animation thread
Like what?
Like most stuff on Cartoon Network.
Also most CG feature films.
Although yes, tbh this has always kind of been a problem.
-
RE: Non-Disney animation thread
Yes please, more really different looking 2D animation. So much stuff looks so homogenized nowadays.
-
RE: What is happening? Why are the recent episodes 95% flashbacks?
It's not the first time they've done this. I picked back up watching pre-Fishman Island arc and I almost stopped because it seemed like nothing but flashbacks and every character ever reminiscing about Luffy and having an individual reaction to seeing him in the newspaper…TWICE, for two different articles, I think. It even became a joke with my husband because we were playing D&D and I had to skip out a couple of weeks due to work and he was like "we'll just spend the whole time having each character react to a photo of you as filler"
-
RE: Pixar movies
The only thing I really liked about the trailer is they used "Magic" by The Cars. I loved that song as a kid.
-
RE: 886: ''The Holy Land In an Uproar - Princess Shirahoshi Targetted''
The flashbacks were just a bit too much and too long to the point that it killed the emotional momentum of what was happening in the present.
btw, this is a nitpick, I noticed they were using "Gear Two" and "Gear Three" in the subtitles, which strikes me funny since Luffy is clearly saying "Gear Second/Third". You'd think they'd keep that consistent.
-
RE: 886: ''The Holy Land In an Uproar - Princess Shirahoshi Targetted''
That felt especially lazy and cheap.

RE: Non-Disney animation thread
I wonder if they also banned, like most of Steven Universe? I feel like that one's gone over a lot of people's heads.
-
RE: Disney animation thread
I'd rather they not bother with remakes at all.
I agree with that.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Daz:
To me its an absolute nightmare scenario
If there was a steady stream of original content, on par with the 90s, then I'd be fine with the occasional remake indulgence. Like that prior Jungle Book one, or 101 Dalmations or whatever. But Disneys slate is just so damn depressing right now, and the trend is horifying. The remakes are gonna make money, and get sequels (Maleficent 2 incoming!). Pixar sequels as well while we're at it, and for the Disney Animation features as well (Wreck it ralph 2 , Frozen 2 - remember when sequels were an extreme rarity for this brand?). More Stawr Wars Movies, more Marvel movies, probably a lot of Fox franchises getting ressurected, gotta use that money to buy up more studios, gotta increase the stranglehold on the movie theater business, gotta squeeze the life out of everything that isn't franchise-worthy pandering to my nostalgia! But hey, maybe we can have Wolverine meet Venom in MCU movie #35 or something, so its all good
I think at some point, they bottom will drop out. Disney always seems to have that cycle where they get lazy and then suffer for it, then they have to reinvent themselves. At the very least, they're going to run out of popular movies to remake.
-
RE: Disney animation thread
Mulan is already so different it may as well be something else entirely. A witch. No Shang. No singing. Why bother?
I'd rather they give me something different and somewhat fresh than a scene by scene remake, because what is the point of that?
-
RE: Disney animation thread
I…can't do this one. Hopefully the Mulan movie will be a better approach.
-
RE: Disney animation thread
The problem is we have a very long history of men, especially those with money and a degree of fame in the media, getting away with abusing women and children and getting away with it. The courts ruled Michael Jackson was innocent, but it turns out he wasn't. Just saying. False accusations happen, but they're far less common than guilty people getting away with it. But like Robby said, if it is true, more people will probably come forward.
