The first couple of episodes were a bit slow, but man it does get good.
I wouldn't have guessed that Sir Pentious would end up being one of my favorite parts of the show.

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you. :)
I forgot I posted it, must be getting senile. -
RE: Lupin the 3rd
Yeah, I go through Lupin moods. Suddenly I really want to watch Lupin and I'll watch a bunch of a stuff for a few months, then take a break again.
It doesn't seem like there is anything currently in the works, unless I'm mistaken, the last animation that was made was the young Lupin and Jigen series.

RE: How was your Day 2 (general chat)
I'm pretty sure I joined the first iteration of AP forums in 2004. It is now 2024. 20 freaking years have passed??
-
RE: Non-Disney animation thread
I did think some of the voice acting sounded a bit phoned in for Scott Pilgrim. I enjoyed it though...it took a different direction than I was expecting.
-
RE: Doctor Who
Yep, great episode! I actually didn't remember if they got Bernard filmed before he passed away so I was happy to see him.
-
RE: Doctor Who
That was the most fun I've had with a Doctor Who episode in a long time. It had the right amount of nostalgia and newness. Bring on specials 2 and 3 next month.
-
RE: Blue Eyed Samurai
@access-timeco I don't know what your original language is, but the original language it was recorded in is English, and the mouths are very clearly animated precisely to the words, so I'm not sure what you mean. Unless you just don't like the actors they chose for the roles. How can anyone not like George Takei, lol.
-
RE: Luffy will be on the MACY'S PARADE!!!!
That sucks that his hat was deflated, but I did laugh out loud when I saw it.
-
Blue Eyed Samurai
I just finished watching this series and it's freaking amazing. Beautiful animation, lovable and complex characters, great action, intriguing story. I don't think I can think of a single bad thing to say about it. If Netflix adds this to their canceled too soon list, I'm gonna be pissed.
-
RE: 1081: ''The World Burns! The Navy Admiral's Assault!''
The art and animation of the flashback scenes were a lot more reminiscent of the anime in the older days. I'm guessing it was intentional, but I think it looked better than the rest of the episode, for what it's worth.

RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
Well, good news is the an agreement has been reached and the strike is over, so they can get to working on the next season very soon!
-
RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
I saw an interview where the creators were saying the example they actually liked that used a combination of practical and CGI effects was Pogo from Umbrella Academy. They had a real person acting with the cast and doing mo-cap, and then a second actor in the studio for the voice.
I figure the best option for Chopper would probably be a small person in costume...could probably even use a practical mask with the hat, ears, and antlers, but his face would need to be animated, Handling his legs would also be tricky. Probably would need to be CGI for action shots.

RE: Doctor Who
7th Doctor is very uneven...his first season I think is mostly kind of awful, but there's some charm to the weird stories he's in. His last season was actually pretty good. It's like they got back on track just in time to be canceled.
I'm a big fan of the 5th Doctor personally, though his earlier episodes suffer from crowded TARDIS syndrome.

Which is harder, LA Chopper or LA Brook?
Chopper, by far. Gotta get an animal guy emoting and keep the fur looking nice. Especially with the transformations. They presummably won't be doing a 1-1 translation for him and go for a more realistic kid actor sort of thing, but...
Brookis human shape so you can have someone in full costume for 98% of it and then just do trickery on the face. You can just do a fancier version of this and get away with it.
Seeing that second image, which I assume is AI generated, makes me think they could absolutely pull off Brook and have him be cool. My bet would be a person with an animatronic mask that is manipulated with some CGI to make his eye sockets emote a bit.
Of course we still have to deal with Franky...I'm less concerned about his physique and more concerned about the fact that he walks around in his underwear 24/7

RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
Message from Oda
( sorry, just saw the video was already posted in the seasonn 1 thread)I've seen a lot of discussion about how they're going to make Chopper work visually, which obviously is a huge hurdle, but what do we want for his voice? Do you think they should go with high pitched and cute like the anime, or could they go in a different direction, like just having a younger teen voice?

My husband has told me he keeps having random friends that he hasn't even talked to much lately message him saying "You HAVE to watch this show on Netflix called One Piece, it's amazing!"

Good news - OP has beat the premier numbers of both Stranger Things and Wednesday, #1 in 84 countries. So pony up Netflix and approve that next season, mkay

RE: Episode 1 (Romance Dawn) - Discussion
@TheAlbinoGoblin
I think this is intentional at this point, to make the non-fan audience question whether Luffy really deserves his allegiance.
Zoro IS more infamous at this point; Luffy is a nobody.
I haven't finished the series yet, but I'm guessing he's going to certainly have th me moment where people go" ok, he was holding back" ( much like Shanks). -
RE: Episode 4 (The Pirates Are Coming) - Discussion
Well, some good, some bad. I'm s bit disappointed in how they handled some of this story arc. One of the parts that really hit me the most as a new fan was when Usopp was trying to save Kaya but ended up getting shot, finding himself in a situation where he may have just lost his only friend. That seemed like one of those important moments that you wouldn't want to mess with.
I don't mind the kids being left out though.
I like Usopp's actor, but he needs a bit more humor. -
RE: Episode 2 (The Man in the Straw Hat) - Discussion
I like what they have done with Buggy's character. Which is easy for me to say since, to be honest, I couldn't stand him in the anime. I know he has his fans, but, eh. I think it was as good decision to go in a different direction in the story then the ChouChou stuff.
-
RE: Episode 1 (Romance Dawn) - Discussion
I very much enjoyed the first episode. I was smiling through most of it, felt little tears welling up at times. I think they got the spirit of it right, at least so far.
When the adaption was announced, I was pretty sure it was going to be awful; so being pleasantly surprised is an understatement.
The marine base section felt a bit odd, of course, because it's straying from the source material more than the earlier parts. Funny thing is, I've actually forgotten exactly what happened at this part of the story. I read/watched those chapters nearly 20 years ago. But I can feel it...the closer something is to the original material, the more comfortable it is to me, and when it's different, it feels off. Then there's my husband who only ever sees bits and pieces of the anime when I watch it sometimes. He says it's fun and he's enjoying it. This is the only way we'll ever watch One Piece together, so hopefully it stays good and it keeps going.
PS - did not expect naked Helmeppo butt

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
I hope many of us will agree in the end!
https://movieweb.com/one-piece-live-action-nod-manga-creator/
"The requirement for choosing a Straw Hat crewmate is not strength. Luffy knows what is important. I used to think it was impossible to make a live-action, but with today's technology, it can be done. We must express the cruelty of the wide ocean.
We just have to aim for an unprecedented blockbuster hit. Believe in the story. Focus on whether it is interesting rather than on film technique. There is a trust between me and my fans, and I can't lie to them. You can't call something interesting if it isn't interesting. It lacks power and interest. It's not inspiring at all because it's not well prepared. First-time viewers won't find it appealing as it is now. There could be the worst case scenario. "

RE: 1071: ''Luffy's Peak - Obtained! 'Gear Fifth'''
And then, Luffy the Grey resurrected into Luffy The White.
Heh, that was batsh*t insane.
Now, I haven't kept up with the manga, so I didn't have any expectations to fill other than I was spoiled that Luffy is going to attain gear 5 and the basic image of what it looks like. I think they did put way too much filler in this which cut down the impact of the whole situation, but it was still fun to watch.
Those Hanna-Barbera sound effects though, lol. -
RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
While I've been very skeptical about this live action ordeal, the newest trailer actually has me excited for it.
My husband only ever sees me watching the anime from time to time and usually thinks it's strange, but he said the trailer looks great and wants to watch it. So there's that.
-
RE: Venture Brothers
I'm looking forward to it, but, of course, I'm really sad that this might be the end for good. Perhaps DH/JP will have something new in store.
-
RE: 1062: ''The Conqueror's Three-Sword Style! Zoro vs. King''
Yeah, that was a crazy fight!
I did not expect King to be hot.
I'm relieved they at least wrapped up 2 fights, one of the things that really brings me down about the anime these days is how frickin long they drag the big fights out. -
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
Mace Windu is a dick, that's all.
Yeah, I know there's some important plot details that have ramifications for the rest of the series in the Geonosis arc, but it drags on way too long. There's a story arc in season 5 (I think?) that features mostly droids that other than one little plot detail, is super dull and I think I just had it on while I did other things for most of it when I re-watched the series.

RE: General Ninja Turtles thread
I saw the trailer before the D&D movie last night and I personally love the art style. Probably the first TMNT thing that has come out recently that got my attention.

The trailer for Ahsoka is out. I can't wait for the return of Sabine and Thrawn.
So many emotions here.
I've been longing for more Rebels, yes. Seeing all these characters live action is exciting.
Thrawn is literally my favorite SW character and I've been excited by the prospect of seeing him debut as a live action character for years.
But, I'm also really worried they aren't going to write his character as faithfully as they should. He's a complicated villain. Lars is a great actor and I loved his voice acting for him in Rebels....but they also portrayed him a bit too...mustache twirly....you know what I mean? There were a couple of grossly out-of-character moments.
Also, it's not easy to put someone in blue makeup and have them not look like a guy in blue makeup -
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
I guess I'm not sure what the issue is for then. There are scenes throughout the whole series that indicated there is something more to their relationship than simply being friends, but that Hera seems very hesitant to take it further. She's afraid because their future is uncertain, but then she realizes that it would be far worse if they were to lose each other without ever expressing her true feelings.
-
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
@Nectar said in Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F:
I thought Hera said they're kiss on the show was their first, but she had a kid? That really threw me off. The show had a chance to show two characters in healthy romantic relationship and ruined it.
That scene at the end with the kid is a time skip. There's a lot of time that passes in between various episodes, obviously in a kid's show they aren't going to show that the relationship progressed further than a kiss.
Not sure what you mean by ruining a healthy relationship - I mean, obviously if your significant other dies, it does ruin the relationship.

RE: Lupin the 3rd
Well, I watched Lupin 0 on Hidive. I actually really liked it. It has a lot of part 1 vibes in the asthetics, but it plays out a lot differently from most Lupin stuff since it lacks the typical tropes that Fujiko, Zenigata and Goemon bring.
Just a fun story about Lupin figuring out who he is and forming a bond with Jigen. -
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
@Nobodyman
There will be a lot of ups and downs...I think there are some fantastic episodes and story arcs that are interspersed between some less than great ones. That's what happens when there are like 25 episodes per season. The last couple are shorter, concise arcs with no filler.
Overall, it's a very good series but it's not perfect. It's easier to appreciate once you've got the full scope of the character development and story elements it covers. -
RE: Lupin the 3rd
I started looking around my streaming services for some Lupin stuff I haven't seen, and was surprised to see that Amazon video already has Lupin v. The Cat's Eye subbed and dubbed.
I thought it was pretty good. I was a bit put off the by the original trailers, maybe because everyone is just a little to pretty, but it's a solid adventure, although I am getting a little tired of every movie being "Lupin teams up with cute girls in a quest to find treasure that the Nazi's coveted".Also, I have to hand it to Tony Oliver for having some of the better range in this than I've seen in the past. Sometimes he gets a bit lazy with the same tonal patterns, but he pulled off some serious moments really well. Still annoys me that he says "Goy-ya-mon" though.
-
RE: 1050: ''Dragons Collide! Momonosuke's Resolve!''
My memory is bad, but I could have sworn Usopp was knocked off of Speed and I don't remember him getting back on.
But anyway, it was a fun episode. -
RE: Lupin the 3rd
@wolfwood said in Lupin the 3rd:
@CosmicDebris for me it's the same. Why not go all the way and have everyone know each other from birth if the creators are that intent on making those kinds of decisions. Why not have Lupins parents know Jigens, Fujikos and Goemons parents and them having paired them all up in kindergarten. Jigen knowing Lupin since they were school kids shrinks the Lupin world in an, for me, unforgivable way
I mean why not, but again, it was Monkeypunch's original idea of how they met anyway.
-
RE: Lupin the 3rd
I mean, If it was like all five of them went to school together, than yeah, that would be totally stupid. But considering Monkeypunch actually wrote that Lupin and Jigen grew up together, it's not that much of a stretch to say they went to school together at some point.
-
RE: Lupin the 3rd
@wolfwood said in Lupin the 3rd:
Aww come on, Jigen did not go to school with Lupin. Jigen met him as an adult when he was working for the mob. Or when the police hired him as a hitman if you are going by the manga. I'll accept literally any meet other than they knew each other from school.
Lupin origin stories are always changing. In the manga at one point, Lupin said they grew up together.

RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
I'm in the camp of Andor being top tier Star Wars media. It's hard to compare it to the original trilogy for various reasons, but it's the best filmed media they've made since. Of course, we need to see season 2, but season 1 on it's own is pretty awesome.
It may depend on what you want most out of SW...if your main interest is stuff related to The Force and Jedi, then this would probably be the most boring Star Wars ever. But personally my favorite stuff is everything to do with the underworld and the politics of the Empire. I am over the moon with the ISB stuff.
-
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
I know people in general had mixed feelings about Obi-Wan, but I really enjoyed it. It's not as good as Mandalorian or Andor, but I did not find it dull.
I absolutely loved Rebels. It only gets better and better. Most people seemed to think the first season was a bit too light but all the subtle character building pays off.
-
RE: Star Wars Universe - Resurrection F
Andor has been amazing. There's actually some really great acting and dialogue for once in Star Wars, haha.
Episode 9....wow. Andy Serkis and Stellan Skarsgard deserve...something. -
RE: 1040: "A Helmsman's Pride - Jimbei's Anger!"
I liked the intensity of the fight. Does Who's-Who really want information from Jimbei or is he just trying to piss him off by bringing up fishman slavery?
