Here's hoping to Weevil arriving to mess up everything. If any other sweet commanders are around it doesn't seem likely at all for Luffy to come out victorious even if Jimbei and the others show up.

RE: Chapter 840: "Iron Mask"
Hopefuly Sanji is just actually normal, and won't get a cyborg-like power up. SH's don't need a 2nd cyborg imo.
Although it would be cliched to see the normal human triumphant over superhumans or w/e. -
RE: Chapter 805: The Mink Tribe
I hope the focus on Robin means poneglyphs
So Zoro was leading the way and they actually went where they wanted to go, guess his fight with Pica awakened his sense of directions
-
RE: Chapter 801: Opening Declaration
I was literally looking up at CP9's cover story and was hoping they would return last night.
WoahI wondered why Doflamingo seems so….cheery?, when this series makes the point that losing the chance for your dream hurts more than getting beaten up.
Doffy just wants to see the world burn. He wanted to do it himself but he still see that future as unavoidable.
He is obviously pretty pissed at "those little shits", but reading the news and seeing his predictions come true is apparently close enough. -
RE: Chapter 800: Follower Sake Cup
The Strawhats actually have a lot of affiliated people around the world if you think about it.
There are people supporting every one of the main crew members and now there are 4(?) kingdoms on more than good terms plus the recent 7 crews fleet.
Not including marines/ex-marines/RA who might find themselves on the same side as Luffy.
No doubt even more people will come to their side as the story nears to the end.
Man the conclusion will be exciting.Maybe there can be side stories for these 7 groups after the main story of OP ends.
I think the end panels this chapter is alluding to stories after One Piece ends. That they will each become great in their own way, perhaps outside the shadow of the Strawhats. -
RE: Chapter 794: Sabo's Adventure
My thought is that Sabo as a character was probably created when Oda planning for the introduction of Ra later in the series.
The trio of sworn blood brothers is just too good of an allusion to miss and when Sabo was finally introduced, his fate was probably decided. Amnesia as a plot device is not very good most of the time but honestly any other way of explaining Sabo's disappearance would make no sense.
The way he remembers is also pretty well done compared to most others. Also I really wish Bellamy would not join the SH crew or even Law's. He still has a long way to go to redeem himself imo
He is still essentially the very same person as before, but he might be able to progress into a worthy ally in the future. -
RE: Chapter 793: The Tiger and The Dog
Yeah, this makes me like One Piece more than Naruto where the system is questioned and its shown that the establishment is coming undone do to its constant failures. Plus the fact that people more and more are trying to do their best to reform it.
The biggest injustice that Naruto did was ignore how crummy the system is and spout out this " Will Of Fire" crud which glories conforming to the wishes of the village even when it does atrocious deeds.
Yeah in almost every other manga the mass is usually a non-factor that obeys and listens and virtually have no will of their own. Although they don't really do anything either in One Piece, they are not mindless and can eventually bring social change.

RE: Chapter 793: The Tiger and The Dog
@Go:
I never understood how exactly does Luffy beating Doflamingo show the failure of the Shichibukai, to be quite frank. Isn't it the same regardless of who beats him?
Also, if that is so, why didn't he go after him when Luffy seemingly did fail, after Gear Fourth drained him? This does not add up.
Letting pirates defeat Doflamingo shows the inability of Marines, and Admiral doing the job shows that the Marines still can exert control.
The point of the whole incident is to increase discontent and lose face for the Marines, and it worked wonderfully because it was pirates that did the job while the Marines did not.
The people in OP are skeptics of the WG and the Marines, the WG saying "System works, it's our man at the scene who screwed up, and now he is trying to shift the blame on us" is not going to achieve anything when the evidence is mounting. Why would he go after Luffy when his Sabo was there? When the announcer was hyping Luffy up to be the hero of Dressrosa? Burgess was too weak to be a factor and Doflamingo was barely standing and alone.
He didn't need to prematurely end his gamble when everything already pointed to Doffy's demise. -
RE: Chapter 793: The Tiger and The Dog
I don't understand why people think Fujitora will let Doffy slaughter the whole country, it was not as if he was sleeping and had no idea what was going on.
He made a gamble that he knew was going to pay off -> Luffy beating Doffy showing the failure of the Shichibukai system -> country saved.
Even if Luffy/Law failed, all he had to do was go in and take down a near dead Doffy -> caught 2 Shichibukais and Luffy -> country saved. It was a win-win situation for him either way. He just valued the Shichibukai evidence over catching some pirates.
Sure he got on the bad side of Akainu, but the power of an Admiral is needed whether or not Akainu wants it.
Besides, this progresses the more progressive faction that sooner or later will arrive, assuming the Marines will be reformed by EOS. -
RE: Chapter 793: The Tiger and The Dog
Maybe Capone is about to attack the Big Mom's ship to retrieve Caesar while Sanji&co are fighting with BM's crew?
-
RE: Chapter 793: The Tiger and The Dog
Could this be the start of the new faction of the Marines that will presumably take over at the end of the series?
Having an admiral finally on the right side and taking a firm stance against Akainu is a pretty big deal. That scar on Akainu fits him well.
-
RE: Chapter 792: Kneeling Down
With the look Sabo have on his face sometimes, I wish he becomes more of a psycho later on. Maybe to show a cruel side of the RA or something.
-
RE: Chapter 792: Kneeling Down
Seems like Fuji's bowing apology is going to make it very hard for Akainu to do anything to him, to save face.
-
RE: Chapter 790: "Heaven and Earth"
So you would argue that what Rocinante said was completely inconsequential?
It shows how Rocinante's perspective of Doffy, important especially since he's a true family member as well as a marine.
But yes, in the overall scheme of things.I would agree with you, if not Rocinante's comment, and the fact that Doffy was quite ok with slavery, and shooting people, quite contrary to the rest of his family.
But aligned with the rest of their society, of which they abandoned and then resulted in the death of his mother and horrendous suffering.
I won't argue, however, that in One Piece someone can't be born with bad, some comically one dimensional villains exist. But there were also cases where people change, Helmeppo makes a excellent example regarding this. Doffy's circumstances brought him to ruin and pure vengeance while Helmeppo was able to reform.Either Homing was a complete failure at raising his children (Rocinante would point towards that not being true, considering he grew up in the same enviroment), or Rocinante is right, and there was something inherently wrong with Doffy. I have confess to leaning towards the latter.
The reality shows that Homing was indeed a complete failure at raising his children and protecting his family.
-
RE: Chapter 790: "Heaven and Earth"
Opinions, yes, but strongly implied to be true. I don't believe we were supposed to interpret it as Rosinante judging Doffy unfairly, Oda would not put such emphasis on Doffy being evil as child in the first place if that was true..
It's only implied to be true when you believe it is. You are taking the voicing of an opinion as something more when it's not. I don't want to waste time talking to you about the details, but that "such emphasis" is just the simple denouncement of an antagonist, which happens way too often to you to extrapolate into something more.
To everything else you have said, I guess it's just a matter of personal belief.
I know some people that allowed me to relate to the personality that Doffy developed. Upbringing and traumatic events like that can really desecrate some people. Turn them into something vain and just full of contempt and hatred. It's too much of a coincidence to make me believe that they had some "inherent flaws" that made them different. Maybe I'm just pushing my personal beliefs into his character, but I guess I enjoyed his character creation. -
RE: Chapter 790: "Heaven and Earth"
Why wouldn't I put much focus on the only in-character opinion of Child-Doffy that has some semblemce of objectiveness, being uttered by his born brother?
But everything Rosinante speaks is not at all objective. What he say is just his opinion and you are wrong to interpret it as anything else.
In Rosinante's eyes, Doffy is simply the one who killed his beloved father. In becoming a marine and going back undercover, it was all a deeply personal affair of revenge(and bringing him to justice).Doflomingo was clearly affected by his upbringing with the CDs and for you to utterly dismiss that is nonsensical.
Does it? By mere existing? How do they affect his character? How do they influence his actions? What meaning do they have within the confines of the story?
Because if those are not present, then it isn't a trdimensional character, it's a pretty window dressing on pretty shallow characterisation.Stuff like this is used so often in fiction to portray character motivation and lasting psychological impacts (and therefore effects) of certain past events.
You really should ask yourself those questions, they are all answered in the story itself, with a little interpretation and common sense. -
RE: Chapter 788: "My Fight"
Thank you. The cliffhanger last chapter was basically "the Birdcage will kill everybody before Luffy can recover and finish off Doflamingo, so the Birdcage has to be slowed down somehow". And now everybody is pissed that we get a chapter about the Birdcage being slowed down somehow oO Bunch of weirdos. I think it
s really just arc fatigue. The arc has gone on so long that people become restless when they get a chapter like this where not that much happens. But I think this will be pretty effective once you can read the arc as a whole. A chapter where everybody comes together to put their last strength into giving Luffy enough time to finish the main villain off. It
s really classic One Piece. Seriously, would you guys really rather see Doflamingo, one of the most build-up villains in the whole story, be defeated by random gladiators than by Luffy just to change things up? Yeah, I`m sure his beatdown would be much more effective and satisfying if it were delivered by Don Chinjao or something.Yeah, it's just couple chapters that aren't too effective when reading weekly, but when read together is probably a way better idea.
-
RE: Chapter 788: "My Fight"
It was foreshadowed last chapter that people have to do stuff to stop the cage for one minute, what's the big surprise?

Does anyone want to name an exoworld?
There's a cool thing where people can submit a proposal for a name for exo-planets.
We might be able to do if we register somehow.

RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
Really I think a lot of times on this forum people prefer to single out individuals to try to silence their idea/complaint. The selective quoting process makes it so simple to ignore most people and pick out the ones you don't like and extend the argument. Then some people who shares the complaint/idea joins in and gangs up on people and some 2 page argument turns into 10+ pages LOL
-
RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
It's more of a not-at-all-medieval country than a medieval city state but yes, let's compare it, it's interesting!
The government seems to be a very basic feudal system with no lords, the culture seems like a mix between the Romans and the Renaissance.
Considering the largest cities in those times barely exceed the hundred thousand people mark, often declare themselves independent nations(city states), it seems fitting that Dressrosa is sort of like that. -
RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
Well, if everyone can get to the middle of the island that quickly, I estimate that Dressrosa is like 6-7 miles wide, maybe like 45 square miles.
Making it 1% as large is a New York City. Which is a city. Not even a state. Much less a country. Dressrosa is supposedly a country, and 1% the size of a city. LolYes lets compare a medieval island city state to one of the largest cities in the modern world.

RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
A term like "spending Haki" leaves a bad taste for me. May as well call it chakra and get technical about it then.
I'm more comfortable with it always being there as a fighting potential and it's usage depending on fighter's mental and physical condition. Doesn't that make a lot more sense?
Someone must have said this many times, but haki is just another interpretation of ki/qi/chi just like nen in HxH.
The power/armor/observation/spiritual pressure/intimidation are all very much the same.Although haki is not portrayed as an energy type/life force exactly, we don't feel like it has a quantity compared to nen, but if it sticks to the roots, it IS a form of energy so "spending" it might stay :/
Chakra was just a "ninja" take on it and was more limited, and not really comparable.

RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
In Gear 4 Puffy has the goods to put Doffy down, he himself said one more hit would do it but ran out of time.
Luffy needs to be become more efficient in his haki use and stop grandstanding so much, his opponents in the new world will not be as foolish moving forward.
Ah but since Gear 4 is all about stretching the CoA, it's not possible for him to use CoA sparingly.
Either he increases his endurance to produce CoA for a longer time, or he innately get stronger like Doffy/Garp so he can use less CoA to do more damage in Gear 2.
It's most definitely both, he increased his endurance already to cope with Gear 2 and no longer turns small from Gear 3. And he also got much stronger/faster to keep up with the likes of Doffy.
Sooner or later he will have a larger reservoir of CoA to use Gear 4 for an extended period of time. -
RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
Not sure if this is mentioned or not, but Gear 4 also makes Luffy unable to maintain his flesh in the usual way, it seems like it becomes all loose with all the stretching, like when he touches seastone.
The drawback is not only unable to use haki, it's more than that. Not only does he lose his strength from CoA, but he probably can't also use Gear 2 to dodge/run away. But he didn't, though. Fight was extremely one-sided after Luffy used Gear 4th.
"Tank" usually means not being sent flying away after being hit.
Tank just means that he can sustain the hits without losing. Whitebeard crushed Akainu and sent him flying but the latter just kept on fighting.
But then again, sent flying is not a bad way to sustain a hit. The air helps to cushion and slow him down. The main reason I give Doffy credit is that he was able to not only take the hits but being able to dodge and counter right after. But I agree, unless Doffy has something else up his sleeve, he is shown to be outclassed by Gear 4 Luffy. Unfortunately, it doesn't last that long since Luffy was covering too much area with CoA.
-
RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
Endurance has everything to do with strength.
If Doffy can clearly tank/dodge the entirety of one cycle of Luffy's Gear 4, it's pretty clear that without Sabo, Luffy's dead here. -
RE: Chapter 786 : Gatz
Since we all know that Sabo wasn't dead and since we all know that he had always been stronger than Luffy, it's pretty obvious that he was going to show up to save his ass one day. Especially since he wasn't there for Ace, he had to made it up to Luffy in a similar heroic manner.
While it makes sense for Sabo to confront Burgess when he was chilling on the palace, it also makes sense to up the pressure a little by doing this little trope. Even if Sabo is strong, he is against a fired up Doffy and yonkou commander.

RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
And here I am waiting for a thought out argument to my response.
I guess it's just much easier to focus on the negativity and ignore the people who actually try to discuss with you. -
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
So was I.
No you were arguing. I made a one line statement and you went on complaining about other people.
@Verus:None; what you have described is exactly the situation that we had in terms of early One Piece. Thus, I assumed since you are of opinion that it would be bad, you disliked when One Piece was using it.
Except that early One Piece didn't have this many things to keep track of, therefore it was okay to cycle through couple events and let things resolve.
Fights were often isolated therefore resolving them individually was okay. This arc, however, had too many things happening at the same time and required frequent communication between different groups to focus on only one thing.
@Verus:No, telling a story is about deciding what would be most beneficial to it, and then including that.
There is no such thing as the most beneficial, that's mostly subjective.
@Verus:Where did that come from? You asked for a reason for internal conflict; I gave you one. What does the population has to do with it?
You said "_More internal conflict regarding the approval of violently deposing Flamingo.",_how does that not have anything to do with the population?
@Verus:And there is no possible way Oda could justify it?
Cliches should not be conflicting with character's personality.Don't dismiss it as a cliche, speeches are more effective to unite people when they face a tangible, common danger. The birdcage contracting was the perfect time for it.
@Verus:Oda does, by showing him repeatedly just sitting around.
Often was someone in the background or getting updated by Viola. As I recall he was not always "sitting around".
@Verus:And they are at less risk when he is actively gunning for just them how, exactly?
Fuji is currently helping the citizens. Him intervening requires him to also catch Law/Luffy.
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
No, the response to the posts I make is unparalleled.
Like forty something posts defending enjoying blood sports.
I do not create those alone, you know? You are all free to just let it go, and let me have my opinion. Nobody forces you to question it. Nobody forces you to make it the focus of the discussion.
You are setting your own house on fire, and then question the fire itself why is it burning, when it should totaly be not. It is not rational. You can reason otherwise, but I was just pointing out a fact.
You really must have hate most of the pre-timeskip arcs then, I guess?
What logical leap are you making here?
And all of it was, in your mind, essential?
Telling a story is not about including all that's essential.
Because violence supposedly goes against his entire world view.
And he will be so arrogant that he will force his opinion on his entire population?
Him being wanted stopped being a plot point a long time ago. And even when it was, Viola dismissed it. Turns out she was right. Who knew?
The citizens are not the only ones in the country.
And he only just now gave said inspirational speech. He could have been doing that for the last forty chapters.
Why? Everyone knows the speech is always saved for the final push.
He could have been doing something, anything.
Who says he isn't? There's no need to show that when most people are already complaining about the length of the arc.
No, I mean making the case for destroying Flamingo. Pretty sure Fujitora would have been a nice asset to have.
And risk having all his new pirate friends caught.
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
Neither is there really need to spread your positivity, nor negativity regarding my negativity, yet you are doing it regardless.
I'm afraid we both will have to live with it. Price of the free speech, as it were.Just take note that the level of negativity that you spread is unparalleled and really just overshadow a lot of other interesting discussions and points other people make.
No, more focus the same amount of screen time, but less spread.
Imho, three or two chapters of concentrating on one fight feels much more fullfilling then showing three pages of it once every five chapters, as if to say that they are still fighting. And when it's less spread things get pushed around. In this arc, there were usually at least 5 or more events taking place simultaneously. If they all get a chapter or two, the cycle gets too long.
Since slipping in couple pages in chapters is distracting and can't resolve anything, it's impossible to always get updates on all the people while maintaining a focus all the time.
It's not like the past when there weren't that many groups of people to track.Oda has sacrificed believability for plot in many aspects of the story. Why not this one, specificaly? What makes running special, of all things, if you don't mind me asking?
Like what? Running is only mode of transportation on land and it is a good way to show conversations, gags, the environment and the effects of events taking place. Not to mention it shows progress, or the lack thereof.
More internal conflict regarding the approval of violently deposing Flamingo. More actual helping and leading people, and less sitting around. At least try to approach the marines for the benefit of the people.
Why does Riku need internal conflict for someone that took so much away from him? He can't beat anyone of importance and fodder fights don't need to be shown.
Besides, he is also old and injured and is wanted, plus he just gave an inspirational speech that saved a lot of people. Marines were already helping people, they were from the beginning. -
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
Heh, that's why I've taken a pessimistic approach to Dressrosa. I'm either right, or pleasently surprised.
Ohai Darth.
Burgess, Sabo, Rebecca, citizens, Riku's philosophy and actions. I would have redone more then half of the fights. I think the structure of the arc also would warrant revision; less jumping around plot points, and more focus. Ah, and slower pace of individual plots.
And Fujitora, of course.
There is really no need to spread your negativity that much when really it's just that your personal taste is conflicting with the way the plot is unfolding.
More focus means less screen time for characters in extended periods of time, not only is that a pain in the ass for them to juggle events by months, it also frustrates tons of readers who want frequent updates for different characters.Every arc that covers a big distance or involves multiple objectives will require them to run around, I would rather prefer for that to be shown on panel even if it takes some chapters. It makes things more believable.
Can you expand on "Riku's philosophy and actions"?
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
It's a treasure trove for Blackbeard's crew. So many high quality fruits everywhere.
Then again if Burgess decides it's to risky to fight several people then he might just take off with only the smiles. It's pretty clear that Burgess is strong, but any fight here that's not against Doffy, he is going to get outnumbered.
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
I think a lot of people miss a really big part of Sugars power when it turns people into toys.
Along with each person turning into a toy, that's also all memory associated with him/her.
Say that person was a grown man. He was likely to be a child of someone, a spouse of someone, friend to many and possibly a parent as well, not to mention how many more people he interacted with. All the people who lost memories lost a part of themselves. The closer they were, the bigger chunk of their humanity they lost.
We saw that a very large chunk of the population was turned into toys, that means the remaining people who weren't turned into toys were reduced to a shadow of their former selves. No longer whole. The citizens that were toys were even worse, their mental state became a sole command made by sugar.
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
We still know too little about DF awakening.
So far the people we know are focused on their DF mastery are Teach, Croc and now Doffy. Most high tier people probably know a lot as well but it's still very unclear if similar DF awaken similarly.
For all we know fruits Teach's absorption technique could've been his awakening.
Maybe only paramecias that produce stuff like Doffy's can turn the environment into stuff. One thing I would like to for see Luffy is that in the future he can switch between gears without blowing air into himself.
-
RE: Chapter 785: Even if my legs were broken…
Why is it that people are always dramatically increasing their expectations as series go on?
Oda has been been getting better at juggling big events like these and the problems are much smaller comparing to the past.
Honestly reminds me of people praising the first Avengers and then saying Ultron was crap. -
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
What was this atom thing even about?
What does this have to do with anything?? Confused.
At least tension have to do with Gear 4… -
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what happened to Darth?
Was away for a while and he's gone? -
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
It's definitely gotta be draining, which is why I think it's a display of proficiency and power but not necessarily skill. It's parallel to the similar idea in fighting where it's better to use minimal movement in attacks to conserve energy. The big stuff might be cool and powerful, but at a certain level it's better to be more minimal.
I'd be really happy if somewhere down the line full-body CoA decreases in frequency because someone in-universe points it out as being inefficient. I'd understand if Rule of Cool overruled logic though.
Alternatively, generating CoA might be more tiring than maintaining it.
I think that the amount of CoA applied is not directly related to the strength of CoA.
One can produce more potent CoA, but perhaps concentrated on a smaller surface, yet not being able to do let's say a full body haki while someone else can produce full body haki but at a mediocre level.
Maybe someone like Luffy never really cared for increasing his CoA surface too much since he is able to react quickly enough to produce it when blocking, similar to Doffy.
Pica, meanwhile, lacks speed so he just covers his whole body and hope that it's strong enough to block attacks. And then there's Vergo who maybe can produce stronger CoA than Pica but can also maintain full body CoA.
To me, generating powerful CoA with a quick reaction like Doffy and then instantly dissolve it, is more meaningful then showing off full body haki.
-
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
Doffy did defend against the attacks with haki, but defending with haki doesn't mean that he can't take damage even Luffy didn't "break" it.
-
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
This is not the first time that haki does not nullify The df powers. …I remember Marco And Vista attacked Akainu with haki....But He regenerated
He regenerated after the hits, nothing to do with while they were in contact.
Haki doesn't turn off fruit powers like blackbeard's fruit does, it just lets you hit the intangible ones.
You hit Luffy and he's still made of rubber. You put him underwater and he can still stretch his neck. Hitting him with haki doesn't suddenly make him flesh. He's still really resistant to blunt attacks. It takes sharp things to really get him, always been the case.
Basically, it lets you hit logia, but permanently transformed paramecia are still always their element.
Haki bypasses special physical properties of DF while CoA is in contact with them. Luffy's rubbery properties was bypassed when he was hit by Sentomaru, nothing to do with turn off.
It makes them hit the normal human body without the DF effect taking place, but only when CoA is in contact. It's why bullets don't puncture him or hurt him while a simple friendly punch
by Garp causes him intense physical pain(and pain is caused by damage).Seastone on the other hand tries to nullify DF properties to a degree and drain their energy, nothing to do with CoA and I don't want to get into it.
-
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
0.5Kx^2 = elastic energy. X= change from original length k is the elastic constant for a material like a spring or rubberband. Decreasing the distance stretched is not good and also having a low K value is not very good either.
An elastic object gets stronger as it stretches until it reaches its ultimate strength and starts yielding and getting weaker until it snaps.A metal object will have a elastic region, yielding region, and it will yield and then start getting stronger again until it reaches its ultimate strength, then it will neck some more and then snap pretty quickly after surpassing its ultimate strength.
Stress =Force/ Area so stretching and becoming thinner would also build up large amounts of stress very quickly, that is probably what the K value is. Ratio of the amount of force built up when the elastic material becomes longer and thinner.
But as you can see from Ke= 0.5Kx^2 the distance stretched/compressed matters more than the strength of the elastic material.
A cool explanation would be this allows luffy to store energy faster and not have to throw his arms behind him to build up energy, he can just compress his own strengthened body and quickly release it as a punch. His punches would also return faster
I think you meant High Force with Low strain is better than Low force with high strain.
The main Property Luffy wants is increased elastic recovery speed. A piece of Steel could take 6-24 hours to recover to its original length with elastic recovery. I think Oda it trying to describe something like that. Luffy is much much faster because he is building up energy in his compressed limbs and then releasing the energy way more quickly.
Here is a diagram of how luffy is changing his punches in mid air. http://www.tutelman.com/golf/shafts/spines/bending1.gif
Basically Luffy is hardening one side of his arm with haki to put it in compression and put the other side in tension.
As for the Rubberband Here is an image to explain that https://esfsciencenew.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/hystrub1.jpg?w=640
You want high stress and high strain, but you also don't want long loading and long unloading, because luffy can change the properties of his rubber with his haki, he can now load and unload way faster and with way more force and bend his punches by hardening one side of his arm causing it to go in compression when the other side goes into tension and bends like the first image shows.
What I mean is that the haki infused arm increases the elastic constant k, which is essential to the amount of force along with distance. But since Luffy's Gear 4 clearly does not demonstrate long distance compression/release, it obviously means much much much higher k value.
Stronger force -> higher stress, since stress=f/a. Strain, however, it directly related to the displacement of the object, and too much deformation will take longer time. Gear 4 obviously is not that slow, but only because it is a short range move, his load/unload speed is actually much slower compared to say Gear 2.
Pistol, originally was a slow pull back all the way and let go move. If jet pistol is the same, that means his arm potentially moves back and then release in the forward direction in who knows how short of a time. -
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
@DHL:
Apparently chapter 378 is nightmare Luffy.
Of correct its not reversed but similar number
-
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
Doesn't it just mean Luffy's haki is stronger than Doflamingo's? I mean, his haki defense countered Doflamingo's haki that is therefore unable to get to the "real body", so it's just a normal kick and basketball-rubber bounces it?
Possibly? This was what I first thought, but even this is never shown yet.
-
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
If tensile strenght is the amount of force required to pull something to the breaking point, how exactly does it increase elasticity? And I'm a bit confused as to if it's the haki or the air that gives the increased tensile strenght..
Part of tensile strength is that it can withstand more stress before permanent deformation, possibly because it is stretching more (elasticity) or just taking in a larger force while stretching.
I think it's basically making it harder to stretch his body when CoA is coated, normally that would be huge problem but since Luffy can control his rubber body it's easier for him.
Notice his compression/release are not that long ranged, it must be tremendously difficult to do so even with his control of his body.
That means the output energy will be tremendously higher.EDIT:
His original body can stretch a long distance quickly and easily: low stress, high strain.
His current body can barely compress/release at a short range: high stress, low strain.Higher stress means more internal energy and force.

@Eat:
I don't think haki is a part of Gear 4th. He's just combining his gears (which are Gomu Gomu based) with haki (which has nothing to do with DFs) to make them stronger. If he wanted, he could use any gear, even 4th, without haki. I know that would be pointless against strong enemies, but I'm just sayng that theoretically.

When will people understand that the Gears are purely manifestations of his DF powers… -

@melody:
i think mix of both.. gear 4 allows him to coat his body in haki while still maintaining the elastic properties of his DF..
I know DF properties is maintained, but in contact with someone else using haki, it's unheard of to maintain DF.
Sentomaru for example, bypassed Luffy's DF properties with simple CoA.It's why logia is countered by CoA.

RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
A question I have about Gear 4 is how is he keeping his rubber's elasticity while in contact with Doffy's CoA kick?
Isn't CoA supposed to bypass DF properties?
Is it because Luffy's CoA is surpassing Doffy's? or is it because he actually have air inside him which allowed him just bounced it off with his insane muscles after a small compression?
Mix of both? -
RE: Chapter 784 : Gear Fourth
@Eat:
Contrary to what I've heard a lot of people saying today, I don't think Gear 4th itself has anything to do with haki. I mean, Luffy could use Gears 2nd and 3rd before he learned haki, and now that he does know haki, he combined his gears with it to make them even stronger. But if he choses to, he can still use his gears without haki. I know it wouldn't make sense for him not to use haki, since it makes his attacks and his deffense better, I'm just saying he doesn't depend on haki to use his gears, since they are based on his Gomu Gomu powers, not haki. Gear 2nd is sped up blood flow. Gear 3rd is Bone Baloon. Gear 4th is Muscle Baloon. Combining gears with haki makes them stronger, but it's not mandatory. Gear is one thing, haki is another.
The point of this gear is that he is using his elasticity to it's full. That means he is compressing his arms/legs that is already infused with CoA, which seems to be increasing the tensile strength of his rubber body.
But since he can nearly freely control his stretching, and haki infused rubber is still rubber, it provides a much stronger elastic force, which means stronger hits when releasing the elastic potential force when he compresses. -
