One way to tell the scenes are definitely new is that they use music from Movies 9 and 10.

Yeah, but that's because they didn't exist at the time. Now they do.
And Toei doesn't sell the license to sth they haven't released on DVD for a broader Audience in Japan, because they fear the Reimport…
-
Is there a better quality version of this new opening ? Where can we download it ? Thanks
-
I. . .um. . .
Chopper, in Whiskey Peak? Really? WTF is with Toei's quality control!?

It's a what-if, just like with Franky at Drum Island in the ninth movie.

I like these new scenes. It broadens the story and shows why the Straw Hats are taking Vivi to Alabasta and why they want to take down Crocodile and Baroque Works, instead of starting right at a point were people who haven't seen the arc won't totally understand what's going on.

Wow, now THAT was certainly a welcome addition. Good pacing, nice action, and a funny and (mostly) lighthearted beginning that ends in a bang. Hope somebody subs this Special Edition if only for that Whiskey Peak scene.
Also, I noticed that Tate animated some scenes, most notably Luffy vs Zoro
It doesn't transition that well to the "real" beginning per say, but works as sort of a prologue.

kaizoku fansubs are planning to release movie 8, in fact it should be out soon (in blu ray though)
but i posted that tv version on their latest release post and i hope they at least check it out and consider it -
Good to see Kaizoku Fansubs has made it to the latter half of the last decade.

How hard would it be to sub it? I mean if worst comes to worst they could just copy and paste the dialog from the Whiskey Peak anime arc in the corresponding scenes in this movie. If I had the software I would do it myself.

here is a comparison shot of the hdtv and the blu ray version

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/77948/picture:0To be honest the only difference I see is that the blu-ray version's screen is about half a millimeter bigger.
-
to me they look more red (?) in the blu ray
-
the only difference i've seen is that chaka's skin changes slightly of color.
-
I stared at the picture too long and noticed that the eye pupils are kinda off-center and not symmetrical when compared with each other. Now I can't unsee this and Vivi looks derpy. -_-
-
The new opening is pretty boss, but the rest of the movie still sucks (despite adding VS cards to the fights explaining DF powers)
-
Well, if Funi wants me to double dip for the Blu-Ray, it'll have to be this version, no question.

Not a huge difference, but look at the ends of her hair when you do it. It's more obvious then.
