Hi I'm back, sorry to disturb the pairing but can someone tell me, is it wrong/weird to be in love with a character from an anime, because I always seem to fall in love with at least one character from each anime I watch. I need to know if dat weird, and because this is a pairing forum, hancock is definately inlove wit luffy bt that one sided and bon clay inlove with ivan not sure what's gonna happen there

… what?
Ignoring that, I don't think it's normal to seriously fall in love with an anime character. Unless you're like a preteen or something.
On a semi-related note, I just checked fanfiction.net and on the first page of OP fanfiction, 12/25 of the fics were OC related. x_x You'd think the wacky art style and manga of Oda would keep those kinds of fangirls away but noooo
-
And then I met Sanji and he fell in love with me as soon as he saw me! And I joined the crew and lived happily ever after.
Have we ever seen any Bon KureixHina yet? She's bondaged him a couple of times and fought twice. It's got more going for it than half of the pairings people come up with XD

i found this way too cute to not post
and buggy is in it …:o

It's common enough that there's a trope for it. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you can tell the difference between a crush on a fictional character and real, serious, falling in love.

Depressing, isn't it? I wish FFnet would give me some option of filtering out OC fics. They're seriously flooding the site. I swear 30% of them fall in love with Trafalgar Law, another 30% Ace, 30% Zoro and the remainder a shared between Kid and any remotely attractive male characters.
Incidentally, what kind of fics were you looking for?

Remember to include Sanji and even Luffy at times.
There is a way to filter it via the search function but it's a pain in the ass and not entirely effective.
I was looking for pretty much anything Gen - no pairings, no OCs.
Lost cause, I know. -

Luffy is pretty common though… I forgot about that XD
Yes! Someone else who likes Gen fics! If you're looking for genfics, you can try my favourites list. Most of the OP stories in there are gen, although some of them are AU.
-
I thought FFnet was swamped with mostly yaoi fics.
-
You just gotta look for the good ones. It's hard and tedious sometimes, but some of the best fanfics are worth it, if you can find them.
-
Not to sound like a party pooper here, but I mostly enjoy Fanfiction.Net BECAUSE of the romance/Yaoi fics. Not meaning to start an argument with you, Reyairia, but let's face facts; there has been, and will always be, tons of fangirls/fanboys out there. And I say if they wanna make tons of stories about their favorite pairings and what-not, fine, let them. It's STORIES. They don't have any actual influence on the Anime/Manga whatsoever, so what's the big deal with getting riled up with them?
Oh, of course it's annoying when you search for Gen fics and find a page full of Yaoi fics, I know. But still, there's no point in raging out on them. People have their quirks, so let them have it.

Gomu,
You don't have to justify your liking of pairings/yaoi. If you like it, you like it. That's fine. If the rest of us dislike it, then we do.
For every yaoi fangirl, there will always be other people who actually want to read a fanfic that actually resembles the series it is based after. And on finding the fandom overrun with badly recognizable cookie-cutter romances littered with OCs and OOCs, of course they'll complain about it. It's complaining, and it's not like they're petitioning for FFnet to stop-them, so what's the big deal with getting riled up about a few FORUM POSTS? As you say, people have their quirks, so let them have it. ;)
Personally, I'm not against pairings, but I greatly dislike most of the ones I see not because they are romances, but because they are badly written with even more contrived plots that only care about about pairing X and Y without any thought to making it believable (and doing any background research on the series other than the character names, hair and eye colour).
I find romance stories work best when there is an overall theme or plot to back it up. Despite my jaded attitude towards pairing fics, the rare romance story that I come across that is any good still manages to find their way into my favourites, but I can count those on the fingers of my hand.
You just gotta look for the good ones. It's hard and tedious sometimes, but some of the best fanfics are worth it, if you can find them.
If you find an author you like, check their favourites. You're likely to find something else you'd like too.

Eh, I don't really have a problem with yaoi fics, other than I don't like yaoi, haha. The only reason I don't like yaoi fics is because, when I'm trying to find specific fics, I have to go through a dozens upon dozens of yaoi fics that I don't care about in the least. And, I might even like them to an extent if they had believable plots and characters that were in character, but most of the time it's just pointless yoai. It's like trying to find a five star, award winning movie but having to go through a bunch of crappy summer comedy flicks and porn to find it. Not to insult those authors and stories, I know there's good yaoi and romance out there as well, but it's not in the majority. And, after a while, that irritaion of going through so much yaoi/romance will inevitably build and build until one can't help but start to hate it. It's not really conscious, it just happens.
Maybe that's just me, lol. I like to read stories that are well written, have characters that are in-character, interesting plots, are long, have nice character development, occasionally have a cool OC, and generally don't have romance in them. This doesn't just apply to FF.net, I'm like this even when I look through my school library for books. I hate stories that make no sense, are totally OOC, have no build up whatsoever to a relationship, and, are, well, badly written. I know that's not in the majority either; yaoi will always be popular, as well as romance. But that doesn't make the stories that include those to be all that great, and when you don't even like the those stories to begin with, it becomes horribly irritating to have to constantly be reminded that they exsist when you're trying to find something that is completely devoid of yaoi and romance.
That doesn't mean that I don't have fics that include romance that I like though. There is the rare jem out there occasionally. However, I mostly tend to avoid those fics that include romance in them.
… anyway~ xD
edit: @Sphingx: lol, I know. I have at least a thousand and a half fics in my favorites on FF.net for a reason. xD Thanks, though haha.

On the subject of fanfiction…
Generally, I feel like a successful fic is one that inspires the reader to look at the source material, be it the plot or characterization or whatever, in a different way than they did before. If done well, it can expand on the story in a way that makes sense and is believable. In most stories I've read, pairings only slow this down, as they are far too outlandish and clumsily executed to be believed. I'm not saying it can't be done well, but I've personally never seen it. If there is romance, then the romance should exist to serve the plot and characterization, not the other way around. The same goes for any story, actually, not just fanfiction.
As for OC's, they should only be used as a means to an end. Like romance, they should be used to support the story surrounding them, the source material should never be there just to fit the needs of the character.
I'm always delighted when I find a truly interesting take on one of my favorite stories, but alas, this almost never happens.
-
We're talking fics now? lol sai-chan, I think that's the most I've ever seen you write. But I agree. Another thing that bothers me is when there's this well-written beginning to a story and I'm like "ok, with you so far," and then an OC just randomly shows up and then I'm like :getlost:. You'd have to try really hard to get me to like an OC in a story. Same thing goes for fanart. I saw this amazing alice in wonderland-themed pic with baroque works and then the OCs just ruined the image for me.
The sad thing is that the best fics I've ever read were actually ZoSan (le gasp), but done in an incredible way. Like whoaaa that was good writing, compared to anything else I've ever read. It's the perfect example of finding gems in a pile of crap. Because most zosan.. kinda suck and there's too much of it. Occasionally I'll read some crack fic to get a good laugh, but I do want to sit down and read a nice one, too. This reminds me that I still need to write that vivi/croc fic sai-chan requested waaaaaay back. I started writing it, but it's been awhile, like with all my stories. :P Wait for me sai-chan! One day… ;3;
If anyone has good fics they've read, please share! Out of curiosity Kylor, what kinds of stories do you like?
p.s. this may be a noob question, but what's gen fic?
-

Mostly the sorts of stories that focus on the main cast doing something that we wouldn't normally see them doing in the main series. this is an example of fanfiction that I think is done well. Some parts are better than others, to be sure, and it does have a few glaring flaws overall, but most of the action and conflict is done in a very subtle and toned down way, while still keeping a high intensity, and surprisingly enough, almost never having a single moment that seems out of character. This is another story I found myself really enjoying. I also wrote a fanfiction of my own, which I posted here a few months back. Reviews have been rather mixed, but I feel like it gives a good example of the point I tried to make in my previous post.
And a "gen fic" is one that has no romance, I think. Personally, I'm annoyed that people should even have to make that distinction in the first place.
-
The best story I've ever read… that's a good question. Out of just OP fics, well, I'd say it'd be a story called 'Breathe.' It included OCs, pairings, a long plot and well written chapters, but holy fucking hell, that is one of the best fics out there I can remember that actually did the OCs and pairings correctly. The OCs didn't take away from the story, the pairings didn't slow it down whatsoever, and the story itself was interesting. And hell, I loved the OCs. As for any other OP fanfic.. well, I don't know. Most of the good ones tend to be oneshots, and it's hard to good find long stories. It's kinda funny though; OP is like a million times popular than Danny Phantom, and yet, I find a wider variety of DP fanfics out there than in the OP section haha. I understand how that works, but still haha.
lol Mari. I actually write a LOT, just generally not in posts. xD An example is, when writting my English essay for the end of term exam, I was the first one finished, and I was the one who wrote the most, ie, both sides of the paper were filled. I once wrote an entire page for a short answer question, lol. Somehow this doesn't translate into my forum posts though haha. As for the Croc/Vivi, I can wait. xD Don't rush yourself for me.
Gen is basically a story that potrays the characters exactly as they are in the show, without any yaoi or romance undertones~

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't mind the romance fics, even the yaoi fics. It's the massive swamping of canon/oc fics that bug me. Stuff like this:
65. The Protector by darkheart1992 reviews In the New World, Gypsys are hunted because of what they are. This story follows a young Gypsy at the start of her death. Pairings: Zoro/Oc Nami/Luffy and Robin/SanjiRated: T - English - Romance/Adventure - Chapters: 1 - Words: 2,311 - Reviews: 1 - Published: 6-10-11 - Luffy & Nami
and
61. Promise » by Ayame Yuki reviews After the death of Sabo a girl falls out of the sky. Was it fate, coincidence, or Luffy's wish? Will she befriend Luffy and Ace? Is she going to join the journey towards One Piece? Navy or Pirate? Either way fate has bended. OCRated: T - English - Adventure/Friendship - Chapters: 12 - Words: 14,672 - Reviews: 20 - Updated: 6-10-11 - Published: 4-8-11 - Luffy & Ace
That make me wanna smash my head against the wall.
Hell, I usually go there for the romance fics myself - at least on other fandoms, the ships I like in OP are a hard find. -

Agree with the two of your recs, I love them too. Anything by Madrabbit is particularly awesome. I'll recommend another couple by the same author of Denial_Rage_Rick_Crackers_Acceptance :
Subtlety
(This one's a Mihawk origin story)The Chase (This one's a Smoker origin story)
This is a recent discovery. It's an expansion of the CP9's Independent report cover story:
Since his this is a couples thread I guess I should recommend something with a couple too, no?
I've written a few too, they seem to do pretty well, but my specialty niche is AUs, so not sure if that's in your demesne of interest ;)
-
i wrote a one piece fic that was well received by those who read it, but i can't remember much about it…
the forum i posted it on has long been shut down, you see.
bummer, i'd like to read it again just to see how much my perspective has changed in these 5 years since. -
Alright, I'll see if I can't sit down and read through some of those recommendations. I always feel nervous someone might catch me reading 'em. It is SO awkward. A particular favorite of mine is Klabautermann, particularly for the Crocodile segment. Aside from that ONE grammatical mistake, I love it, and yet it's about a paragraph.
@Sphingx:I've written a few too, they seem to do pretty well, but my specialty niche is AUs, so not sure if that's in your demesne of interest ;)
AU? Just in general or One Piece-themed? I don't know about anyone else, but personally, I'd LOVE to see more One Piece AU. Feudal, steampunk, anything. I'm trying to get myself into writing a doflacroc AU, inspired by the fic Water Sector, but in order to make it as realistic as possible, it requires some research for one thing, and for another it's just so hard to write material that bridges the larger plot points. I know what to write for scenes that can't or won't happen until much later, and it just aggravates me.
Sai-chan, you're so patient lol. I think part of it just requires forcing yourself to sit down and just write.

Here's a little list of some of my fave OP fanfics; however, most of them are oneshots, but they're amazing nonetheless~
A Brief Interlude from the Norm*
A Small and Simple Thing
After*
Attack of the Zombies*
Breathe + (this one's my absolute fave)
Burdens
Cracked
Cranberry Punch+
Deeper Than the Sea+
Deeper than the World+
Graffiti
Hana Arashi Meets Wadou*
He Fought Them*
He Comes for Us All*
Her Boys
Horror of Fanon
Lost+
Of Scheduals Paperwork and Kids
Mary Sue Must Die
Orchestral Manoeuvres
Satirical Lulz+
The New Age of Piracy*
The Price of Naivete
Toddler Troubles (Rewritten)+
What Lies in a Single Thunderbolt*
Will Passed On*+The ones with stars next to them are ones I've read and reread so many times it's silly, and the ones with the plus signs are multichapter ones. But they're just that good~ Feel free to check them out if you have the time, Mari. They're all amazingly well written and interesting. I'm sure you'd like at least one of them. <33
And lol. If I were to complain about a late story, then I would be the pot calling the kettle black. I'm a horrible procrastinator, I have no right to call upon other's procrastination. xD

How fun to come back to fic discussion hahaha! :D
Have you guys ever actually tried LiveJournal for good OP fics? You can't find dick on FF.net anymore :P It's just become too overrun to even be able to utilize properly D: There's a fairly huge community on LJ that are proper wordsmiths and know correct grammar usage and characterization. Lots of romance of course, but there's tons of gen and other fun too :) Decent OP fic is hard to come by on ff.net if you ask me D:

Yay you read Aoi24~! One of my fav authors! Aoi24 does a pretty mean AU too, one about what if Garp had actually succeeded in making Ace and Luffy marines. I liked that one so much I made fanart for it.
Speaking of Aoi24, I actually owe the existence of one of my AU fics to one of her prompt challenges. I responded and it kinda snowballed from there.
My AUs are usually "What if"-type One-Piece themed AUs. Oh well might as well shamelessly self-promote… All the below are multi-chaptered.
The Supernova Eleven -> What if the Straw-Hat Pirates only comprised of the Eleven Supernovas? This one is based off the my completed drabble-set In Five Pieces (Don't read while drinking).
Though a Bird Can't Fly, That Doesn't Mean It Never Will -> What if Kuina hadn't died from her fall down the stairs? How would she have fared in her quest to be the greatest swordsman in the world?
Marie D. Suesse and the Mystery New Pirate Age! -> YMMV on this one, it's a semi-intellectual deconstruction/parody of the Mary Sue/OCs wanted! genre. I do take some pot-shots at poorly-written Sues from time to time, but it's not really an all-out bash fic as it focuses more on exploring the impact of the events depicted in those Luffy-dies-OC-crew-takes-over-the-world self-insert fics, if they weren't glossed over. I've been told it's quite a genre shift. Like I said, YMMV.
As for writing…. I have to discipline myself to keep updating. My current method: I give myself 2 months to write each chapter. Having a deadline tends to give me more motivation to keep at it. Sometimes you just need to power through the blocks, even crappy writing can be fixed on the Nth rewrite ;) The hard part is actually writing the first draft. And my beta is effing awesome, so I consider myself lucky.
Oh if you're looking for more AU recs... :D I read this awesome Western-themed OP AU, but I'm just hesitant to recommend it because the author seems to have stopped updating. :(
PS: Thanks for those recommendations! Looks like I'll be doing me some reading tonight!
PSS: PervyPaulFancier: I don't really LJ, but any particular LJ communities you'd recommend? Anywhere new is good!

Do you mean me? Haha. xD If you did, don't be shy about telling me which ones you liked~ IF you didn't, well, oops. lol
I just stick to FF.net for my fic reading. Mostly because I don't only read OP fanfiction on there, though. There's a ton of amazing Danny Phantom, Harry Potter, and, well, many other awesome stories out there.
-
Aw man, don't you just hate it when there's a really awesome story and has no updates? There's this great LuZo AU fic (I think Sai-chan linked to it as a matter of fact) and the last update for it is like… 2005 or some really long ass time and I'm all D: And then you never really know if the author is dead or just plain busy with life.
The only One Piece LJ comm I know about is the doflacroc, and due to icel's mishap with the scanner (noes) it hardly gets updates. My fic is just gathering dust and I felt kinda bad cuz a couple people actually thought it was good enough that they wanted to read more. I think deadlines are important too. I find that there's just not enough motivation otherwise.
sudden tangent:
!
I just thought it was funny how irritated Moria looks here is all -
LuZo AU fic? lol, I doubt it, considering I don't even like the couple haha. In fact, I'm looking over the list right now, and the only AU fics on there don't have any major pairings in them at all, especially since one's a sequeal to the other. The only romance ones on there are… certain chapters to Will Passed On (Viv/Kozha in Ch. 3 Passage of Ages and Wiper/Conis in Ch. 7 For Freedom's Answer), Breathe (Zoro/Robin, Nami/Luffy, a brief mention of Tashigi/Smoker, and OC/OC).. maybe some in Cranberry Punch and Satirical Lulz, but those are more for making fun of them if any.
The only ZoLu fic I've read is a story called Final Betrayal, and the only reason was because it was so well written. It's the only yaoi I've read, if I recall correctly.
-

This is true O_O
PSS: PervyPaulFancier: I don't really LJ, but any particular LJ communities you'd recommend? Anywhere new is good!
Being the perv that I am, I usually wander about the onepiecekinkmem and fanforall communities AHAHA trololo. But anything by Maldoror-gw is good: http://maldoror-gw.livejournal.com/tag/one%20piece Runic_Binary is also good, and I've also read a bunch of the recs found here (more gen stuff is middle bottom of the page): http://darlingfox.dreamwidth.org/86766.html
Of course my butt is all CP9/Water7 centered so you'll find a lot of that in what I've recommended LOL but the individual writers know what they're doing at least, and there's generally something for everybody :) You can find out fairly quickly if it's to your writing style or not but at the very least it's well-organized and the writers have a good sense of humor :)

I came for fanfic suggestions, and found my Pervy again.
SQUEEEEEEEEE.

I love that this thread suddenly seems livelier now that Pervy is here. Coincidence? I think not. We should have a Water 7-themed party to celebrate. :ninja:
It's been some time since I've been to FF and read stories, but here are some:
! Rejecting Freedom - A Zo/Ro told from Robin's perspective. Fairly good read, though I think the earlier chapters were the better ones
! The Greatest Party - As I recall, a pretty hilarious story
! Satirical Lulz - Just what it sounds like
! Water Sector - It is a ZoSan but takes some time to get there so feels a bit more "realistic" in building relationships. Also has a lot of funny scenes and okamas. Bon-chan makes reading worth it. :ninja: I found it to be inspiring because of the descriptive imagery. Usually fics I've read don't focus on that element so much.
Hospital Beds - It's got updates!! OMG, I can't believe it. Sanji and Zoro centric. Seems to be platonic thus far. I mean, it is a hospital setting. No clue what direction it's headed since I haven't read the new chapters yet but I think it's worth a look.
! Cost - A very brief satirical piece on shipping
! Horo Horo Samurai - I can't believe I nearly forgot about this one. A rather cute Zoro/Perona story when he was on Kura-whatever that island is called. Also happens to be just about the only Zoro/Perona fic in existence apparently.
! Cigars - Definitely my new favorite. A short character relationship analysis of Crocodile and Robin. Started liking this pairing more recently. :3 It's a shame there isn't more of it. Anything else on FF that features these two is full of mind-bleaching levels of wtf. adds Croc/Robin pairing to already ridiculously long list of fics marimo wants to write
! Breath - This was the Lu/Zo AU I was talking about earlier. Guess the titles must have been similar. Hasn't been updated since… 2006. T__T
! Sugar Cubes and Bittersweet - It's kinda interesting that the author completely got rid of all the chapters of this story and is now going to re-write it. Kind of sad that he/she couldn't have kept the old stuff. Yes, it's another Sanji/Zoro centric one. No clue where it's headed since all the chapters are now gone. It's got a completely different set-up than before.I can't help feeling I'm forgetting one, but it's possibly on a different site. If I remember, I'll post it later.
EDIT: Gypsy I wanna read your stories~~~ and did you read the mafia omake yet? Wasn't sure since you didn't post a comment. Did you like it?
