4kids has a bad end of year

Well it wasn't a good year for 4kids. (MUAHAHAHA!) They reported their year end results and it's not lookin too good. They didn't loose any money but they have a %60 drop off from last year. Now I heard 4kids is still doing the marketing for Pokemon, yet some people are telling me that's why this is happening. I guess I don't know for sure… but here's the whole article:

Oh and I love when he says, "In addition, results were negatively impacted by a lack of a major theatrical release in 2005. Our fourth quarter 2005 licensing revenues were significantly lower than our expectations as many of our newer properties failed to perform as hoped at retail."… gee I can't imagine why =O!

maybe that'll teach that idiot that you can't dumb down all anime and still expect it to be popular.

4Kids' primary market isn't Anime, it's general cartoons; they're an entertainment company. A fall in the Anime market affects them as much as it does the private companies, but since no one else is public, we can't be sure.

sonique, you choose to ignore the overall positive message put forth by the article. They do mention the losses but they have much more stuff for the future to make money off of. Remember, the group of people that care about the butchering of one piece and other shows is small (evidenced by the lack of purchasing on the part of fans that clamored for the uncut dvds of shaman king and yugioh) compared to the audience that 4kids is trying to reach. In the end, big business wins again.

i hate them too but living in a fantasy world doesnt change things. sigh however, they are doing more good than bad for the anime community by introducing new anime to the masses, in whatever form it may be. I remember 10 years ago when we would have never had this conversation because there was nothing like 4kids around to piss us off.

and you would have the same problems with them because they would be going for the same age group. You have to admit that the young ass audience that they target is simply too profitable, so they will tweak the anime in whatever way possible to make it seem cool to them and still keep whoever dictates their ridiculous censorship rules happy

Why not just pick series which don't require as much editing in the first place?

I'm sure there are series on Japanese TV aiming to a younger audience than OP or SK.

Oh yay! A company is doing somewhat worse than they did last year! If we're really lucky then there might be layoffs and people like your parents could find themselves without jobs! Hurray in celebrating other people's misery!

are you guys blind? the article makes it clear that it was a bump in the road. This means absolutely nothing all companies lose in some quarters and gain in the next. If this continues the way it has for the next few years than it is time to rejoice.

I found it interesting that Yugi-Gi-Oh! and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the main breadwinners for 4Kids. I would have figured one of the newer anime licenses would have been more frugal. I must admit though, I still see a lot of kids playing the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game, so the revenue for the show must still be pretty steady. I never would have thought Winx Club would be very popular, but I guess it could show a revenue shift from boy-related merchandise to girl-related merchandise.

I am interested to see what their "new sources of revenue" will be, especially after the contract with Fox for another two broadcast seasons was made. They are also working with Microsoft on some projects. We may see some new video or computer games with 4Kids licensing on them if this project is realized.

P.S.- I just saw on the 4Kids website that they are doing something with the Royal Air Force. Whether it's a TV series, game, or something else remains to be seen. Either way, it sounds interesting.

People hear what they want to hear. Same thing can be said with reading. I mean, it's like checking how their stock is and only pointing out how it had a low of $16 while at the end of the day it was about $16.15 (doing a project in my business class with the stock market, and looked it up for kicks. the ticker is KDE if you're curious).

No I would not because most other dubbing companies know better than to take a show like OP and dumb it down for 5 year olds. MANY anime dubbing companies don't just target kiddes. So yeah, research plz.

I mean, I'm pissed what SE is doing to FF11 but, I can't see myself wishing people were killed over it…

Posting news is one thing. Gloating about other people's failure and struggle (in which this case there really isn't any and if there was it isn't like it would not affect AK anyway) is another.

you have every right to act immature but you have to see the reality of the matter. You are reading what you want to read into the situation. 4kids is merely doing the same thing with OP as happened with dbz. They are the same situation. Huge anime that is targeted at older children to young adults that happens to have scenes of death and blood and language that is not suitable for children. DBZ was targeted at that audience (which i was appart of at the time) and OP is targeted at that audience for the same reasons. Regardless of who licensed it, as long as it isnt on adultswim it would have to have been toned down. I agree that it was a dumbass decision to license One Piece when one takes into consideration the kind of show that one piece is but from a financial perspective, 4kids cant lose. You seem to be unable or unwilling to see past that.

and I don't care if 4kids will make up for their losses. I thought the part about Al Kahn being furious was funny... in fact, Im sure 4kids will bounce back, they always do, but for now, I was just enjoying the fact that were having some hard times and one of the main reasons stated was because their new property wasn't doing as good as expected. And I mean it's like "well gee I wonder why!" you know?

I thought that from the beginning when i didnt see the same buzz around it as i did with dbz. Man, dbz was fucking huge round my public school. It was fucking huge and i doubt i can say the same for one piece. It might have been different if they had the right after school time that toonami had. Its all about location, location location
