That you have heard of these movies (and that others here have, too) would seem to suggest that they didn't flop as much as they could've. [I'm likely to change my mind on this statement. Or maybe not.]
Oh, and I'd add "Cast Away" (y'know, the Madonna one) to the list. I think the reviews were so bad that it never got to box offices.
It's too bad, really. What bad press can do, I mean. Critics pan some really great movies - and sometimes later regret it when the movie becomes a classic - and really forwardly bad review could ruin not only a chance for the movie try its luck, it also makes such movies rather inaccessible.
EDIT: And, (Or, rather, But) bad press can actually work to something's (a movie, in this case) advantage.
