"I'm going to ruin my main character as a joke."
Chapter 1106: On Your Side

If it comes from the interview with Conan's mangaka, I remember reading a translation that was way more nuanced than that tweet.

Sandman is the best translator, he's a Japanese to ENG unlike the rest ( Viz included ) who are the opposite and give us guesses of what they think it ( JP texts ) might mean.
here is the link :
I advise following him on twitter, he's the goat of the OP fandom. Great enough to correct Viz and then the latter admits and corrects the official to Sandman's translation. Goat stuff.
I don’t know what to say about this.
But Gear 5, even if it’s a joke, seems to have unlimited abilities or powers. So I don’t get it. If his character is supposed to be a joke, wouldn’t he make him less capable?.
Even with the laugh and jokey jokey attitude of gear 5, I find normal gum gum Luffy more laughable and ridiculous and part of it is because he was less capable and had to come up with weird fighting strategies that even his opponents didn’t think he was serious.
Well I was expecting a lot from gear 5 but I guess I should lower my expectations from now on.
Maybe I understood it wrong on the draw as joke and his fan expectations comment. What is he talking about, the look, the attitude, the fighting style, the capability, the story or all encompassing?. -

Being an animal or creature/Zoan I’m thinking the personality of the creature is influencing Luffy just a bit.
I actually hope this is the case and Luffy will at some point need to "conquer" Nika in order to better use G5 (or even to not have his own personality eventually overwritten).
-
It's not that I don't understand why Oda drew it. I like his reasoning too. He put story reasons behind it as well and I'm betting eventually Luffy will have better control of the laughter. I think it's interesting that Kaidou would even ask Luffy who he was. It seems to me Kaidou's questioning is related to all the laughing and it will be explored more in the future.
Or maybe the seemingly uncontrollable laughter persists as is until the story's end. Either way the toon physics won't end and I certainly wasn't arguing that. Luffy laughing less won't change what Oda set out to do with Gear 5 in the first place.

I’m the opposite. I hope nika takes over more.
I would’ve been ok if Joyboy personality had taken over.
I think the moment Luffy ate the gum gum fruit, the fruit started to modify his personality.
He has always been ridiculous, unserious and carefree for the most part. He did get very angry at shanks for not fighting those mountain bandits, I don’t remember if that was pre-fruit or post. -
I don't know, Luffy getting annoyed in or before fights was equally as fun as his silly shenanigans. "I'm gonna send you flying" doesn't have the same ring to it when followed by manic laughter.
If Oda didn't want his fights to get serious, maybe he should have kept the plot more lighthearted. We've been getting progressively darker and bloodier arcs. The main character has to act accordingly if they have an ounce of empathy. Can't just fix that by giving them a laughing pill and make them move funny.
-
I think Luffy was serious enough past the first 2 chapters of Gear 5 (1044+1045) and in the final 2 (1048+1049) he seemed just like normal old Luffy to me.

The joke isn't funny if the mark is in on it.

@cavendishsama To me, there are only a few moments in that fight in which G5 feels like Luffy. When he pulls Bajrang Gun is one of those, but for most of the fight Luffy is taking hits because he's fooling around, while usual Luffy would be trying his darnest to avoid them. Kaido is constantly getting free hits on an already near-death Luffy, the only thing saving Luffy there is G5's absurd endurance.
-
@Deicide I was mainly talking about the facial expressions/dialouge. In the final stages of the Kaido fight he was not manically laughing, he was serious and yelling about his friends as usual. I think G5 Luffy was still able to do the gravity of the situation justice when it mattered most is my point.
I guess we'll see how the overall fighting style evolves, right now I think Oda writes whatever he thinks is the most fun with little thought about anything else. Club Imprint/Burnt Luffy vs Kaido, Light Bulb Luffy vs Kizaru were fun ways to show Gear 5 get hit, Luffy moving his head around with his arms was a fun way to dodge vs Lucci's finger pistol for example.
-
and nobody talks about the miracle reviving to 100% hp after he was at near death status
alright he does funny silly things but how come an ability as serious as reviving can be included within the range of the jester fruit ?
everything does not have to make sense. it's why i disliked it. it's overpowered and simply mocks everyone including the readers.
the sad part is, whatever bullshit that had awakened, it lies deep within the One Piece lore. every coming revelation will be related to Nika in one way or another. so if you don't like it you're in for a tasteless journey. a change must happen soon. I'd vote for Teach to steal the fruit and be done with it.
let's have Luffy fights like his awesome grandpa. that's the only viable option to bail out from this disastrous joke.

I really dislike how Luffy was tanking needless hits as if he wasn't near death at that point. Kaido hits him again, again, and again, with Luffy barely trying to dodge (unless the dodging was used for some joke), and it just don't feel like there's any stakes, because cartoon characters aren't really made for tension.

And, worse, that was Kaido hitting him. With his strongest attacks in his strongest form. With Luffy at his weakest ever (had basically just died).
Even if Oda changes his mind in the future and has G5 Luffy lose a fight or sustain real damage... how will that be believable? The strongest creature failed to deal any kind of damage to G5...
-
@SirCaesar The strongest creature, until x, y and z are introduced.
I mean, it's obvious Kaidou was strong and was known as the strongest creature but was he really though? Big Mom had a better showing I feel and her Devil Fruit is nigh limitless, the Gorosei seem to be formidable, there's BB possibly with 3 devil fruits, there's Shanks the ultra haki man and there's Imu who might or might not be a fighter bot most likely is. -
@wolfwood I realize he was probably messin' around, but there's likely a degree of truth there.

Yes, here is the interview for anyone who wants to read it: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSZ8bE7VDpLQhbvT5B9zTqAaHw9NHFxRd-4tA7Dh-4Xe0riNQZOvhOoDa2b2_euttfOzz6PMAe76MHg/pub
Oda's explanation of why he did this is far more detailed and nuanced than Sandman's abridged translation made it out to be. -
@Deicide I take it no one is familair with one of the most powerful members of the Justice League, Plastic Man -- able to defeat Superman, the Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern, among others. You have three guesses what his powers are and why I'm bringing him up in a Gear 5 thread, and the first two don't count.
-
@ea77 I know Plastic Man, but there's a reason why he's relegated to humor and not used much outside of it. The guy is a tension killer.
At Marvel, Squirrel Girl has beaten Thanos, Galaktus and Doctor Doom. And that's the joke. It doesn't make her a great character template...
