I like this guy because he likes to focus on the good things, and he pretty much agrees with me about all the best parts:
But even he thinks Luigi got the short end of the stick.

Jack Black at it some more, and the orchestra with a smile on their faces.
Apparently the sound designer originally wanted Van Halen's Jump to play during the climax of the movie. I guess I shouldn't complain that they ultimately went with the Invincibility Star music, but...man, that's the one song insert that would've worked.

Uh... I know it's easy to miss because the tempo and way the song sounds so people only know the refrain, but ... That song is about suicide.
That would NOT have worked once anyone actually realized what the lyrics were.
Kind of how people get patriotic about "born in the USA" every July 4th due to the chorus and don't realize it's about horrifically treated military veterans and a specific horrible historical incident.
@Robby something Ronald Regagan totally missed
@Robby Based on some quick research I've done, it looks like the lyrics were been inspired by a suicide, but the song itself isn't necessarily about it.
In any case, if it flew over my 35-year-old head, the kids probably wouldn't pick up on it either. And it didn't stop Ready Player One from using it.
I think the story goes that David Lee Roth saw a suicide jumper situation on the TV and was inspired to write Jump.
Or was it Eddie?

I dunno anything about the backstory. But we listened to it every single day in PE one year and I picked up on the lyrics being about suicide on my own. At the age of 9.
Like yeah its not explicit and it makes it seem like its framed as "hey, we could have a romance, might as well jump into it" but its also about desperation and being backed into a corner.
But its so upbeat and nonsensical and repetitive its super easy to ignore.

Just because other movies make bad song choices doesn't mean new movies should make the same mistake. Otherwise Watchmen has dooemd like a dozen great songs.
Also, ANY movie using "Holding out for a Hero" after Shrek 2 just... shouldn't. If you can't match that you shouldn't use the song.

Well, if the song traumatized you that much then maybe you have a point.
Guess I'll have to research songs better from now on. For all I know "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is about the Holocaust.
EDIT: Okay, not the Holocaust, but it's clearly about a junkie.
"Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed"
"The landlord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate"
A man so destitute that they repossessed his bed and he's behind on his rent payments.
"Hey I give you my phone number
When you worry, call me, I make you happy"
Yeah, very obviously a drug dealer.
And the constant chanting of the song reflects his drug-induced stupor.
There's lots and lots of songs where the lyrics get glossed over for one reason or another. Often because the actual music part overwhelms the words or the hook/refrain is good or the singer is sort of unintelligible but there's a lot.
This one blew my mind when I actually listened to the lyrics like a year ago. It became such a meme because "ha ha look at this kid with the deep voice" but...
"Why Every Pop Song is Ironic" by Robby Bevard.

Isn't that the history of music in a nutshell?

Or like how Fortunate Son is often used in endless Vietnam War related memes and jokes as some war anthem but....the song is very anti-war lol.

Given that song came out at the height of the crack epidemic that is funny.

Even without bothering to listen to the full lyrics I knew the song at the time was terrible knowing what the theme of the song is after all these years…..it’s still terrible.
I like songs for their melodies. I like a lot of Queen's songs but I recalled one time a coworker exclaimed that he had written off Queen because of some lyrics.
...I never looked into it. Let me enjoy my melodies.
Guess he wasn’t fond of Freddy’s love of chicken
I finally got a chance to watch the movie today, since they added it to Peacock. I really enjoyed the movie. It pretty much have everything I want for a Mario movie. I really enjoyed Jack Black and Charlie Day's performance as Bowser and Luigi.
Also who do you think the villain will be for the inevitable sequel? Wario?
Can't think of who else.
Unless they’re going outside of the usual.
It’s going to be Bowser again.
Well, that would mean more Jack Black, so can't complain.
Their options at this point are:
The Koopalings tap into the nostalgia market but I could see Nintendo insisting on Junior.
Second most prominent Mario villain obviously. Not sure if they think he could carry a film as the main villain or not though.
Nostalgia value pretty much though it would let you introduce a world unconnected to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Surprise villain that also lets you introduce other lands and but also gives Daisy a way into the series.
Well, there is a RPG remaster coming so he'll still be fresh in people's minds. He's a huge threat that would justify letting out Bowser as well.
Next movie already has a release date
April 3 2026 huh?
Checking a calender March 10 that year is on a Tuesday so I guess that's why they're not pushing it three weeks earlier to hit that but...
