Yup. Doug is really gonna have a party time with next week's movie. It was really painful to sit through it myself, especially since the voice acting was almost as bad as Phoenix Games. I bet that he'll point out how there's close to no originality present in it, too.

I still Rock-A-Doodle to this day, but that sun rising definitely bugs me. It's true Don Bluth started to decline in quality in the '90s, wonder what he's doing now? I'd like to see NC do "Troll in Central Park", Don Bluth went from a what-Disney-won't-do to every stereotype of a Disney derivative.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I like Bluth's 80's movies. There was no sugarcoating. You could tell that he wasn't afraid to pull out all the stops by putting the characters into truly dangerous situations that you thought you'd never see in a kid's movie.

I dunno, Disney (at its best anyway) has some really dark material in it, including:
-Little boys being turned into donkeys
-The death of Mufasa and attempted killing of Simba as a cub.
-The whole of Hunchback of Notre Dame was pretty dark.
-The devil himself appears in Fantasia (…okay Chernabog, whatever)
-And of course, Bambi's mother dying. In the 80s though, yeah I guess Disney was pretty sugarcoated.
-
Disney didn't really start to sugarcoat until, well, after the death of Walt Disney, really.
the Disney renaissance managed to bring a bit of the old edge back (just look at NC's Disney Villain list), but yeah, none of them have quite the bite that classic Disney does.
-
And that's the funny thing, Don Bluth and some other guys from Disney broke away from the mouse in the '80s (or late '70s) because they didn't like the way the company was being run after Walt's death. Things started to get better after "Little Mermaid", and after "Rock-A-Doodle" the quality in Don Bluth's movies declined. Funny how things work. Still would love to see a "Dragon's Lair" movie.

When I was a kid, I never understood this.
Now that I'm older, this speaks millions to me, and I don't understand how this movie didn't get in trouble for this!

It's funny, it's like a delicate balance or something. Some animation studio always has to pick up the slack when another one goes south. Don Bluth had the 80s, then he went bad and the Disney Renaissance took over the 90s, and now that Disney has gone bad again its Pixar division is delivering the goods (best track record thus far, BTW)
-
When I first saw Rock-A-Doodle, it was advertised with a coupon of laundry soap. I don't have the tape anymore but I'm both sad and happy at the same time about that fact.
-
I thought NC did a good job with this one. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and the owl songs seem much more annoying now.
"I'll use all their minutes!"
-
While this movie was pretty bad, I wouldn't say it's the worst thing by Don Bluth that I've seen. Believe me; this is only the tip of the iceburg when it comes down to his 90's films. Even as a kid, I couldn't stand "A Troll in Central Park". God, what a stupid movie that was!
I kinda remember his version of Thumbelina, and from what I do, it screamed "Disney Rip-off" louder than anything else he;s done, in my opinion.
-
Yeah, Rock-a-doodle is far from his worst work.
Well, it looks like the NC and his gang won the Rifftrax contest. Woot! Now I'm psyched to see what kind of movie they'll make with the MST3K gang.
-
Well, it's not a new Nostalgia Critic, but a new Nostalgia Chick!
And even better, it's LABYRINTH!!
http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thedudette/nostalgia-chick/5570-labyrinthYeah, I guess this really was a girl phenom.
-
THANK GOD! I was starting to worry she wasnt coming back.
Never even heard of that movie and i barely know who David Bowie is but who needs that when you got Lindsay, She's still number 1 slightly ahead of Spoony.
-
Dude that movie is one of the best movies from I believe 1986

-
Dammit, and here I was hoping the man himself had a new video… Nostalgia Chick's as funny as a nap...
-
Well, technically it's now Tuesday, so we should be seeing a new NC video sometime later today.
-
Dude that movie is one of the best movies from I believe 1986
the movie is also over 20 years old, and he doesn't live in the states
-
Then he should track down a DVD and jump on the wagon!!
-
:P you just said this was a girl thing. are you sure he really wants to. :)
-
Nostalgia Chick is funny most of the time, though this was probably one of my least favorite reviews of hers. Her Spice World and Pocahontas ones crack me up everytime, mostly because I've actually seen those movies and know exactly what she's talking about.

I'm a bit behind in the discussion but I'm a Don Bluth fan, so I can partially explain some of the reason (as I see it) behind his success, decline and relative obscurity today.
Bluth radiates an aura of distinctly Disney yet is non-Disney. This is because he contributed so much to Disney's old classic style, like Bill Peet. People look at Bluth's animation and think "Disney inspired him" when it's the complete reverse.
The problem is, like Peet Bluth was a "power behind the throne" nameless animator, to most people. Most folks can't name a single staff member on 101 Dalmations for example, except perhaps a few voice actors AT BEST. Bluth was relatively unknown.
In the 1980's, Bluth filled the niche left by Disney sucking by coming out with bolder, daring animated cartoons. After-all, his success with Dragon's Lair and Space Ace was in trying something original. In a stagnating industry, that's all anyone can do and hope success reigns in.
Most of his staff during that time was pretty consistent as well, but once Disney resurrected itself and created a huge market for animation (namely, Disney) he was edged out of the spotlight. It would be like…say, Mike Tyson just starting to make a name for himself and Muhammad Ali appearing out of nowhere to win another heavyweight championship.
As many can say, there was apparently a short honeymoon in the early 1990's after LM where artists could get away with being as mature as they wanted to be, but backlash set in. Bluth's strategy was to conform immediately to that and make himself non-competitive with Disney, since he lacked the resources to deal with a brand label that was so popular and in-demand. Hence, the string of relatively bad movies like The Pebble and the Penguin and A Troll in Central Park (personally, I felt most of the other movies like Thumbelina and Rock-A-Doodle were good, though not excellent like the Disney fare).
Bluth changed tactics by the time he left his studio, but the industry was stagnating by the time he got into Fox. So, these days, he lacks the soft power he once had to get some real movies going, doesn't have many connections anymore since he's old (Fox hooked him up with fresher, younger staff who learned from 'new Disney'). That's why he's focusing on reviving his classic stories.
I'd LOVE to see a new, awesome Bluth film come out in the future, but unless we see a fan help fund one I doubt we'll see much come of it.
Frankly, I could imagine a Bluth's take on Baccano!…
-
No comment on Labyrinth?
But who knows? Maybe now that Lasseter is in creative command at Disney, he may extend a hand to Bluth and invite him back. If Bluth will take it.
-
And now the Nostalgia Critic presents a movie more tragic than the event it's actually based on. Titanic: The Animated Movie.
-
I like the Nostalgia critic, although IMO he tries too hard sometimes to be funny. But the Titanic review made me laugh out loud a couple of times, like the point where the crew was throwing water at the ship's hull. The ending of the movie was so randomly out of place it was hilarious.
-
crap. i'm at work right now. i can't watch the titanic review.
I checked out a few nostalga chick reviews though. I like how her humor is more intelligent. It's kinda refreshing, from all the slapstick and potty humor out there. (not that i don't get a laugh from that too) It's like she is saying to the audience that she gives them credit. "you guys are smart too, you get what i'm talkign about here"

Nah i think i'll pass, but i am going to download some Bowie tho.

Exactly how i feel, Just like the angry video game nerd Doug just tries to hard on playing out his persona, and its shame since he's a great reviewer. Id love it if he cut down just a smidge on the gay jokes and dropped in some more random knowledge about the movie or just rabbled on a bit more about his personal feelings.

Cap my dear, your a woman after my own heart

Yeah, this Nostalgia Chick is fun to watch. But, wolfwood, you have to check out Labyrinth. That movie is a very definition of "what were they smoking?".
-
I think this is the first time Nostalgia Critic has reviewed a bad movie that honestly was bad in the purest sense.
-
The thing about the animated Titanic movie is that it feels like a parody. It just seems like one huge, purposely stereotypical animated movie adapting something for children. The fact that it's done completely in earnest makes it so inhumanly awful.
-
i saw characters from 6-7 different disney movies in the animated titanic movie. is that even allowed? :w00t: hi

It's not only Disney. As NC mentioned, the mexican mice were blatant rip-offs of Speedy Gonzales, and that mouse family was the Mousekewitz' from "An American Tail".
Some others I noticed that he didn't mention:
A crow that acted suspicoiusly like Jeremy from "The Secret of NIMH", right down to hoarding shiny objects.
A girl who looked an awful lot like Belle from Beauty and the Beast -
Or it coulda been one of the crows from Dumbo.
-

Great stuff as always!
-
Wow . . . . . just wow.
He should be doing Pagemaster next. Looking forward to it!
-
He's doing Pagemaster next?! Kick ass! I remember that movie, and I remember it was nuts. Should be an awesome episode!
-
The main things I remember about that movie: Macaulay Culkin, Christopher Lloyd, Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy, Phil Hartman and Jim Cummings.
What a freakin' well known cast, lemme tell ya.
-
I remember watching Pagemaster once. However, the only things I remember about it were the talking books, and Macauly Culkin. More will probably come back to me once I see the review, though.
-
sweet, i havent seen most of the movies he's reviewed, BUT I'VE SEEN THIS ONE! Can't wait ^^
-
urk pagemaster the film that ended up with me being lumped with that sodding nickname for six years
and I like labyrinth so there

Epic Lulz for the Sonic Says bit.
-
You know… this wasn't quite as funny as his usual videos. Apart from the creepy librarian bit, he really seemed to be scraping for stuff to joke about.
And the card commercial stuff is getting old.
-
God, he's right; that movie was so god damn dull and forgettable. All I remembered was that it made no sense, and lo and behold I was right!
It was one of the many movies I owned purely because I was (and am) gay for animation.
Oh, and the card commercial stuff has been at the end. You can turn the video off before it even gets there.
-
